Writer and director Andrew Bell’s new vampire horror movie Bleeding is set to premiere at Grimmfest this Halloween season, and we’ve got the film’s festival trailer for you this week.
Watch the trailer below and find the film’s festival poster underneath.
In Bleeding, “Vampire blood is harvested as a drug, and two desperate teenagers on the run from a vicious dealer break into an empty house and find a sleeping girl locked inside.”
Grimmfest previews, “It might seem a strange claim for a narrative ostensibly about vampires, but this is a film with a rare, raw authenticity; a stark, grim, utterly unsentimental exploration of the nature of addiction, which keeps its genre elements dialed down low, focusing instead on the day to day existence of the small-town, small-time addict; the petty thefts and betrayals of friends and family, the desperate hustles, the confrontations with vicious but...

Crispin Glover is a man in search of an exit — from a hotel — in the TIFF-bound “Mr. K.” The cult-favorite character actor — known for “Willard,” “River’s Edge,” “Dead Man,” and, who could forget, Cousin “I’m making my lunch!” Del in David Lynch’s “Wild at Heart” — stars in Tallulah H. Schwab’s surreal tale headed for the 2024 Toronto International Film Festival’s Platform section. IndieWire shares the exclusive trailer for the film ahead of the festival, which runs September 5-15 in the thick of the fall fest season.
Here’s part of the synopsis courtesy of TIFF: “The ordeal for Mr. K’s misfortunate protagonist — a traveling magician played by Crispin Glover in one of the richest performances in his long and continually surprising career — begins when he checks into a once-stately hotel. The following morning, Mr. K is understandably confused by his inability to find the exit. Then again,...

In The Exorcism, Russell Crowe plays an actor and recovering addict terrorized by demons, personal and otherwise. His character, an actor on the set of a fictional horror movie, also happens to be terrorized by a cruel director (Adam Goldberg), something with which director Joshua John Miller has a lot of experience.
Joshua John Miller, who co-wrote The Exorcism with M.A. Fortin (The Final Girls), pulled from personal experiences when creating his psychological family drama meets possession horror story. It’s hard not to see the parallels between the director and Crowe’s character, Arthur Miller, an actor struggling to find his footing again when he lands a role as the priest in an exorcism horror movie. Joshua John Miller, the son of late actor Jason Miller (The Exorcist), started his film career as an actor at age eight and amassed notable acting credits that include Halloween III: Season of the Witch,...

Bower worked on John Cassavetes’ directorial debut, Shadows (1957), and played one of the translators that make a mess of things in the acclaimed Western The Ballad of Gregorio Cortez (1982), starring Edward James Olmos.

As a species, we share some similarities that are simply unavoidable. We need water and air to survive; we strive for beauty; and we can’t help but love Keanu Reeves and the genre of noir. These are just ultimate truths about our kind and there’s next to nothing we can do about them, right? Except suiting these needs as best we can.
Brace yourselves, because we have the perfect combination to suit two of your biggest desires: a young Keanu-led noir movie! Water and air are on you, though.
What Did Keanu Reeves Get Himself Into in 1986?
Many praise Keanu Reeves for The Matrix, John Wick, Constantine, or even Cyberpunk 2077 — but the truth is that the actor gave his perhaps best performance ever all the way back in 1986. River’s Edge is a criminally overlooked movie, and let us tell you: it’s as dark and bleak as they get.

Dennis Hopper was the Oscar-nominated performer who experienced many ups-and-downs throughout his career, with his off-screen antics often overshadowing his onscreen talent. Yet many of his movies have stood the test of time. Let’s take a look back at 15 of Hopper’s greatest films, ranked worst to best.
Born in 1936, Hopper made his movie debut at the age of 19 in “Rebel Without a Cause” (1955), where he became fast friends with James Dean. He had an even bigger role in “Giant” (1956), which would be Dean’s last film before his untimely death in 1955. Hopper struggled for several years trying to find his voice, making small appearances in such films as “Cool Hand Luke” (1967) and “True Grit”(1969).
He burst onto the scene with the counterculture phenomenon “Easy Rider” (1969), which he also directed and co-wrote (with co-star Peter Fonda and Terry Southern). The story of two bikers (Hopper and Fonda) traveling across...

"River's Edge" was one of the most important independent films of the 1980s. Directed by Tim Hunter from a screenplay by Neil Jimenez, it tells the soul-deadening story of a group of teens who cover for their friend after he murders another of their friends. What makes the movie especially disturbing is the teens' indifference; when they're taken to view the nude corpse, which the killer has dumped at the title location, most of them gaze at it with a galling lack of emotion.
"River's Edge" earned raves from critics and won Best Picture at the 1988 Independent Spirit Awards. It launched the careers of Keanu Reeves, Ione Skye, and Daniel Roebuck, and went a long way toward spurring Dennis Hopper's late '80s comeback. It is a scathing experience, one that leaves such an indelible mark you need not revisit it. You'll never shake the image of Danyi Deats...

David Gordon Green's 2022 slasher film "Halloween Ends" is an unusual entry in the series in many ways. In it, the vicious masked serial killer Michael Myers (James Jude Courtney) has been living in a sewer and stays out of the film's central action for the bulk of its running time. "Ends," instead, focuses largely on a character named Corey Cunningham (Rohan Campbell), a man who, two years ago, accidentally killed the young boy he was babysitting. Green envisioned Corey's hometown town of Haddonfield, Illinois as a bitter and wounded place, full of spiteful, hurt people who cannot heal from the murderous damage that Michael caused way back in 1978, as well as his return in 2018. Every citizen is bitter, angry, and paranoid. Corey is bullied and picked on, unable to outlive his mistake.
When Corey wanders into Michael's sewer (he was fleeing bullies), he finds Michael and a strange transference occurs.

With its list of new releases for June 2023, Prime is bringing a handful of Amazon Originals and many recent movie hits to the fold.
It’s actually quite a busy month for non-American programming in Amazon Originals department. Shows and movies like Deadloch, My Fault, and Medellín all originate from outside the U.S. and U.K. For the American and British crowd, however, the streamer is debuting two big tentpoles.
The first is I’m a Virgo on June 23. Acclaimed director Boots Riley’s TV followup to Sorry to Bother You will tale the surreal and satirical tale of a giant in Oakland. That will be followed by the more conventional (assumedly) fourth season of Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan on June 30.

Crispin Glover is one strange dude, but that’s what we love about him. First bursting onto the scene dancing his butt off in Friday the 13th: The Final Chapter, and hitting the big time playing Marty McFly’s nerdy father, George, in Back to the Future, Glover could have gone on to a perfectly serviceable career as an inoffensive character actor, but to say he had other ideas is putting things mildly. The very next year, 1986, featured Glover in two memorably eccentric supporting roles: opposite Sean Penn in At Close Range and the other opposite Keanu Reeves in the cult classic River’s Edge. In 1989, Glover did the impossible; he crossed Steven Spielberg when he refused to return for the Back to the Future sequels and even sued when they reused footage of him from the first film.
Around the same time, Glover, in a move that was either brilliant or spectacularly ill-advised,...

“Watch them, the children of the night. What trick shots they make!” As Nicolas Cage gears up for the latest movie, Renfield (which seems like another blast from this phase of his career), he has recollected a moment between himself and Keanu Reeves that has left him with “mixed emotions” about the John Wick actor.
During their Reddit Ama (Ask Me Anything) this week to promote next month’s Renfield, stars Nicolas Cage and Nicholas Hoult were asked a series of questions related to both that movie and many others. With John Wick: Chapter 4 crushing it at the box office, the two were asked what their favorite Keanu Reeves movie was. While Hoult was direct, saying the first John Wick and 1994’s Speed, Cage was a bit, shall we say, cagey. The Nic(h)olases — Cage and Hoult — connected with the fans over the weekend in an Ama session on Reddit as the duo, who formerly played father and son in the underrated film, The Weather Man, promote their newest venture as master and servant in the horror comedy Renfield. The Nics were asked a wide range of questions, from their favorite soups to their favorite lesser-known roles.
A fan would inquire with Cage what other undead characters he would like to play now that he’s done both Ghost Rider and Dracula, and Cage was quick to answer,
“Ohh! Yeah! Jim Corrigan, the Spectre (old DC comic character). That would be a fun one. But that’s a hard one to pull off because he’s virtually invincible, he has no weakness. You need characters that have a kryptonite, that have a flaw, but he’s kinda unbeatable. But that would be a fun one.

Hollywood was in the midst of its Brat Pack fervor when the director/screenwriter team of Tim Hunter and Neil Jimenez jolted moviegoers with "River's Edge." It was the grimy, dead-souled antithesis to John Hughes' peppy tales of suburban woe. The Northern California high schoolers in Hunter's film are dead-enders who, aware of their paltry worth to society, have little value for human life. When their friend John (Daniel Roebuck) claims he's murdered his girlfriend Jamie (Danyi Deats) and takes them to see her nude corpse, which he's discarded like a dog toy next to a riverbank, they do not recoil in horror. They are at most dumbstruck, and at worst eager to aid John in covering up the crime.
We should be shocked by their lack of revulsion, but Hunter lets us hang out with these kids for a good 15 minutes before taking us to Jamie. They're future burnouts...

In Lilly and Lana Wachowski’s iconic 1999 action movie, Reeves’ character, Neo, must choose between taking a red pill (that will make him see the truth about the simulated reality he’s living in) or a blue pill (that will keep Neo blinded about the real world and stuck in his droll life). Neo chooses red, and so did Reeves.
Asked by a Redditor if he’s ever stolen something from set, Reeves answered: “Not stolen… the watch and wedding ring from ‘John Wick,’ a sword from ’47 Ronin,’ and the first red pill that the Wachowskis ever gave me.”

While Hugh Jackman is currently beefing up to play Wolverine for the ninth time in “Deadpool 3,” another beloved actor just revealed he would have loved a shot at the role: Keanu Reeves.
While taking part in a reddit Ama, Reeves was asked if there’s ever been a role in his career that he regretted turning down. He said no, but that he “did always want to play Wolverine,” no doubt jump-starting a whole new fan campaign to get the 58-year-old actor in the role if/when the Marvel Cinematic Universe recasts.
Reeves is no stranger to comic book movies, having led 2005’s DC adaptation “Constantine,” a role he intends to reprise in an upcoming sequel at Warner Bros. But Keanu Reeves as Wolverine? Where’s a “Bill and Ted” time machine when you need it?
The “Matrix” actor’s delightful interactions with fans during the Ama also offered a number of other revelations.

Prime Video got off to a fast start this summer with the release of The Boys season 3 on June 3. Now, as we enter the dog days, Prime Video is set to keep the warm weather good times rolling with a new twist on an old classic. That’s right, Amazon’s list of new releases for August 2022 is highlighted by some good old-fashioned baseball.
A League of Their Own, the TV adaptation of Penny Marshall’s 1992 movie, is set to premiere on Aug. 12. Like the movie before it, the series will dramatize the All-American Girls Professional Baseball League which saw women playing America’s pastime while the major leagues were on pause for World War II. Abbi Jacobson (Broad City) co-created the show and will star as catcher Carson Shaw.
Other Prime Video Originals of note this month include season 2 of British comedy The Outlaws on and the Ron Howard-directed Thirteen Lives,...

Prime Video will continue rolling out its summer slate in the month of August, releasing new original series, as well as a mix of suspenseful films, action movies and more.
Amazon’s series version of “A League of Their Own” will debut its eight-episode first season on Aug. 12, introducing new characters and stories set in the historical opening of the All American Girls Professional Baseball League (Aagpbl).
Ron Howard’s “Thirteen Lives” tells the real-life story of how a young boys’ soccer team was rescued from the Thai mountain cave where they got stuck for 10 days along with their coach.
Other new film arrivals include hits from earlier this summer, “The Lost City” starring Sandra Bullock, Daniel Radcliffe, Channing Tatum and Brad Pitt, as well as “Sonic the Hedgehog 2.” Academy Award-nominated film “Licorice Pizza” also arrives on Prime Video this month.
Freevee will also have new arrivals this month.

Following The Film Stage’s collective top 50 films of 2021, as part of our year-end coverage, our contributors are sharing their personal top 10 lists.
By many metrics, 2021 was a terrible year. Whether it was the persistence of a global pandemic and the ineffectiveness of those in charge to properly manage it or the increasing inanity of Film Twitter discourse clogging one’s timeline every day, it often felt like there was nowhere to seek relief from this year’s woes. But there was salvation somewhere: inside the films themselves. Despite what some may lead you to believe, and despite the perhaps rather milquetoast quality of many of this year’s award candidates, 2021 was the best year for cinema we’ve seen in quite some time.
Whether you were able to head back to theaters at some point during the year or remained watching from the safety of your own home, there...

To mark the release of Over the Edge, out now, we’ve been given 2 copies to give away on Blu-ray.
Over The Edge – available now on Blu-ray from Arrow Video – is an incendiary ode to teen rebellion that quickly became a Gen X/punk-rock touchstone, and a key influence on filmmakers such as Richard Linklater and musicians like Kurt Cobain (who often cited it as his favourite film). Armed with a classic ‘70s rock soundtrack, energetic direction by Jonathan Kaplan (White Line Fever) and an intelligent script by Tim Hunter (River’s Edge) and Charlie Haas (Matinee), Over The Edge still packs a righteously powerful punch today, and makes its worldwide Blu-Ray debut with brand new bonus features interviewing the cast and crew.

Sometimes, you remember just where you were when you connected with a piece of music so powerful it erupted in your head. In the summer of 2000, I rushed in late to a packed all-media screening of “Gone in 60 Seconds.” I’d had a vexing day at the office, and was hoping the film would revive me. It did, more quickly than I imagined. After a flurry of titles, the soundtrack was filled with slow rhythmic claps, and over that came American voices, ancient yet present, not so much singing as chanting: “Green Sally up, and green Sally down. Lift and squat, gotta tear the ground.” The piano chords came in, simple but seductively syncopated, and then, beneath it all, a beat that was bigger than big. It echoed, it boomed, it made John Bonham’s thuds in “When the Levee Breaks” sound like someone banging on a tin can.

The Film Independent Spirit Awards will definitely look different this year — because instead of taking place in a tent on the beach in Santa Monica on the Saturday afternoon before the Oscars, it’ll be a virtual ceremony on Thursday night, hosted by “Saturday Night Live” star Melissa Villaseñor for the first time.
But will the awards feel different, both from the usual Spirit Awards and from the even-more-indie-than-usual Oscars that will follow on Sunday? If Spirit voters stick to their usual habits, the 36th Spirit Awards could end up looking more like a dress rehearsal for the 93rd Academy Award than an indie alternative to the Oscars.
Of the 14 film categories that’ll be handed out during the IFC broadcast, seven could easily go to films that will go on to win the Oscar in that category on Sunday, including “Nomadland,” “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom” and “Promising Young Woman.

For this Tuesday, we don’t have a ton of Blu-ray and DVD releases on tap this week, but we do have some incredible titles coming out, once again proving that it’s quality over quantity. If you haven’t had a chance to see it just yet, Brandon Cronenberg’s Possessor Uncut arrives on Tuesday on multiple formats, and coincidentally enough, Total Recall is getting a 30th anniversary 4K release this week, too, and the films pair extremely well for a double feature.
Other films headed home on December 8th include She Dies Tomorrow, Smiley Face Killers, a 2-Disc Special Edition release for Versus from Ryûhei Kitamura, Black Pumpkin, The Facility, and Sympathy.
Possessor Uncut
From the visionary mind of writer/director Brandon Cronenberg, Possessor is an arresting sci-fi thriller about elite corporate assassin Tasya Vos. Using brain-implant technology, Vos takes control of other people s bodies to execute high-profile targets.

Filmmakers and streamers discussed the future of Japanese cinema at Tokyo International Film Festival.
Award-winning filmmaker Hirokazu Kore-eda has praised the opportunities offered by streaming giants such as Netflix on a panel at the Tokyo International Film Festival.
The Japanese director of Shoplifters, which won the Palme d’Or at Cannes in 2018, said streamers were offering more freedom to creatives.
“When I’m making films, I have to balance my creative desires with enough popular elements to be able to recoup, to be able to make the next film,” said Kore-eda. “It feels as if streaming services offer more chances at the moment.
