- The original VHS release in Japan, as well as the initial English-language releases, present the image in a matted widescreen format reflecting how it would have been seen in cinemas. The Japanese "Perfect Edition" laserdisc contained a full-frame open matte version at a 4:3 ratio, revealing more of the image than was seen in the widescreen version, and this version was later used for the 2002 Collector's Edition release in the US. The 2021 Blu-ray from Discotek contains both widescreen and full frame versions.
- Much of the English language dub dialog is significantly altered from the straight Japanese translation, and some characters have dialog where they were silent in the Japanese version. An obvious example of this occurs when A-ko lands on the wing of a fighter while making her way to the alien spacecraft. In the original Japanese, the pilot cannot be heard, but can be seen gesturing. In the English language version, he can be clearly heard saying "I'll get you down!"
- The original subtitled North American releases, on VHS and Laserdisc, are presented in "Mangarama" format that preserves the aspect ratio by positioning the top of the film against the top of the screen and widening the bottom black bar. This was done so that subtitles do not interfere with the video image.
