We believe it is safe to say that Spring is finally here in North America. Relatively safe. Pretty sure it is safe. Not only will April showers bring May flowers but May also sees the arrival of the new Danish horror flick Nightwatch: Demons Are Forever, and the UK horror flick, Stopmotion. Next month also sees the ongoing live watch parties every other Friday night of The Last Drive-In with Joe Bob Briggs. Four Toxic Avenger films are coming to the repertory programming next month. We don't know if Bob Clark's Deathdream and Buddy Giovinazzo's Combat Shock are considered part of the Namsploitation genre but they're two Nam-era horror flicks to keep an eye out for next month. While we still don't know what...

Here is some awesome news for fans of the independent film production and distribution company Troma Entertainment: Troma has just announced that they’re teaming up with Renaissance Content Group add some of their cult classic films to Amazon’s Freevee streaming platform. The films will be available to stream free-with-ads on Freevee, on all streaming devices.
Troma didn’t provide a full list of the titles that will be added to Freevee. If they did, we’d be here going over the list all day, because according to the company they will be putting “hundreds of films” on Freevee! They did mention some specific titles, and we’ll hand it over to them so they can share the information:
Over the next few months, hundreds of films will be coming to the channel. The list includes iconic Troma films such as the entire Toxic Avenger series, Class of Nuke ’em High,...

In his latest interview/podcast, host and screenwriter Stuart Wright talks to filmmaker Liam Regan (Banjo aka My Bloody Banjo) about his new film Eating Miss Campbell, which has its World Premiere at Frightfest 2022 later this month. A life-long Troma fan, Regan also picks his Top 5 Troma Films, including:

I remember once reading about a conversation Orson Welles had with PeterBogdanovich about the fact that screen legend Greta Garbo only made tworeally good pictures out of 40.Orson's response was, "Well, you only need one."
Well, Tobe Hooper definitely had "the one." Sure, he made several pictureshorror fans remember fondly such as Poltergeist, The Funhouse and Salem'sLot. But “the one” he will be forever remembered for is The TexasChain Saw Massacre.Game changers arrive on the scene without warning – and in the early Seventies, this movie exploded on screen.

When Supernatural first premiered way back in 2005, none of us probably thought that it’d still be churning out new episodes over a decade later, but here we are. Having spawned a cult following and conventions devoted specifically to it, the fan favorite horror series chronicling the adventures of Sam and Dean Winchester is still going strong, with a thirteenth season set to commence this October.
Not meaning to get ahead of ourselves, we’ll reflect on what made this past year stand out, namely the resurrection of the boys’ mother, Mary. Seeing her try to re-acclimate to a world she’d been absent from for over 30 years by diving back into the hunting lifestyle made for some interesting television. Not only that, but she got mixed up with the British Men of Letters, serving as an oversized B-plot.

A young black man meets his white girlfriend’s parents in Jordan Peele’s chilling satire of liberal racism in the Us
Ira Levin, author of Rosemary’s Baby and The Stepford Wives, would have cracked a wry smile at the cackling satire of this chilling “social thriller”, the directorial debut from MadTV alumnus Jordan Peele. When a preppy rich girl takes her African American boyfriend home for the first time, loving harmony turns to creeping discord. Diving deep into the broiling undercurrents of “post-racial” America, Peele’s hybrid creation starts out like a modern reworking of Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner, before drifting towards the more brutal territories of Kevin Smith’s Red State or Jeremy Saulnier’s Green Room, via the eerie mysteries of Charles Burnett’s To Sleep With Anger. Beneath the beatific smile of 21st-century liberalism, Get Out finds the still grinning ghoulish skull of...

We study history in order to understand the past, particularly its traumas, so we will not perpetuate them; yet how can we avoid our mistakes when we hardly acknowledge the impact of the ones we have already made? If the past months have revealed anything, we see the wounds that still seep from our country’s side, wounds that many were convinced had been closed—or did not exist at all.
That, in part, is what makes Toni Morrison’s Beloved so horrifying. On one hand, it’s an eerie and tragic ghost story; on the other, a look at slavery that is far more brutal and honest than any history book. Both perspectives combine to create a brilliant, harrowing classic of American literature, one whose truth we must acknowledge. *Those who have not read the book, be warned: there are light spoilers ahead.*

"American Nightmare" ended in a huge left turn of a plot twist for Supernatural. After Sam and Dean saved poor psychic Magda from her terrifying mother, it finally looked like Magda might get a happy ending. It was not meant to be, however, as the British Men of Letters showed up at the last possible moment of the episode and killed Magda in cold blood. Besides giving a shocking cliffhanger, the moment appears to remind viewers that it's the Men of Letters and not Lucifer who will be the Big Bad of the season. Yet could there be another secret reason for the Men of Letters killing Magda, other than the fact that they are just awful people?...

“Demons I get. People are crazy.”
Watching Sam and Dean tackle a case involving an off-the-grid family that believed the devil was in their daughter, I couldn’t help but think of Dean’s quote from Supernatural Season 1 Episode 15, “The Benders.”
Sure, there was a supernatural element with the daughter on Supernatural Season 12 Episode 4, but what the mother was doing as just a plain human was all kinds of messed up.

The daughter flaying herself while locked up in the basement was tough to watch, and the mother was spot on creepy.
Even when the mother was forcing them to eat poison, there was some solid tension on whether or not the whole family was going to be killed. It continued right up to the point where Magda decided against killing her mother, which I actually thought could go either way.

“Don’t Judge a Book by Its Cover” is a proverb whose simple existence proves the fact impressionable souls will do so without fail. This monthly column focuses on the film industry’s willingness to capitalize on this truth, releasing one-sheets to serve as not representations of what audiences are to expect, but as propaganda to fill seats. Oftentimes they fail miserably.
This month is the epitome of summer blockbuster season with a couple kids films, a couple attempts at old school epics, some comedies, some actioners, and a sparse few adult-oriented indies to provide a well-needed counter to the explosions and slapstick. We’re still inundated with sequels (four on this post alone) and reboots (two), but as long as we buy tickets they’ll continue coming — louder, brighter, and vapid.
So let’s try and give some love to the smaller films. Take the kids to a matinee...

If you own Alan Wake, but have yet to check out the game’s quality add-ons, The Signal and The Writer, then you’re in luck. Both are currently free to download on Xbox 360 and Xbox One, via Microsoft’s store.
With the recent release of Quantum Break — which includes free download vouchers for Alan Wake, its Dlc and its Xbox Live Arcade spinoff, Alan Wake’s American Nightmare — it makes sense for Remedy and Microsoft to give these extras away. Not only is it good press, but it also generates more buzz about the talented developer, its great Alan Wake games, and Quantum Break, which is an ambitious, well-made and memorable title in its own right.

If you were to poll a large group of gamers regarding which developers they consider to have the best overall track record, you’d likely get a lot of repeated answers. Many would look to Rockstar and its studios, or Naughty Dog, which is another incredibly talented team. Neither would be wrong, nor would an assortment of other answers. That said, one developer that would make the top of my list, and maybe wouldn’t receive the recognition it deserves, is Finland’s Remedy Entertainment. They’re the folks who brought us such great interactive experiences as Max Payne, Alan Wake and Alan Wake’s American Nightmare.
Remedy is back this month with a new and very ambitious project. Of course, I’m talking about Quantum Break, which is a game that was first shown all the way back at the Xbox One’s reveal event. It captivated our attention then,...

Robert Eggers’s Sundance-garlanded period horror is a chilling study of fear and the devils that live within us all
“What went we out into this wilderness to find?” Subtitled A New England Folktale, writer-director Robert Eggers’s Sundance prize-winning feature debut is an atmospheric chiller rooted in the fertile soil of religious zealotry, social isolation and original sin. On the surface, it is the story of a puritanical 17th-century English family enduring an American nightmare, tormented by a wicked witch who steals their children and their souls. But beneath that surface lurks something more disturbing – a tale of God-fearing folk whose terrified belief in the twisted fantasies of folklore hides their own darker secrets.
We open with the beleaguered family leaving their New World community to live alone on the very edges of civilisation. As they depart, singing “I will confess…”, cinematographer Jarin Blaschke’s archaic framing – the taller,...

A trademark for an Alan Wake‘s Return has been spotted online by an eagle-eyed user on NeoGAF, but is it actually an indication of anything of importance?
The listing is rather bare-bones, so it could simply be a placeholder for a future project and not an actual title for an Alan Wake sequel. It should also be noted that the trademark has yet to be authorised.
With that said though, a domain name of the same name was registered last year by Network Solutions LLC, the same representative that developer of the first game Remedy Entertainment used for other registered domains, according to VG247.
If the listings are early signs that Remedy is planning a new adventure for Alan Wake, we could be waiting a while for the sequel to materialise. The developer is currently focused on releasing Xbox One exclusive Quantum Break, which is due to release in April.

Whoops, it looks like Microsoft accidentally released several big-name Xbox 360 games on the Xbox One‘s backwards compatibility service over the weekend. Red Dead Redemption, Halo Wars, Alan Wake’s American Nightmare and Tekken Tag Tournament were all able to be downloaded by people who already owned digital versions of each title on Xbox 360, but were later removed by Microsoft after the error was spotted on their end.
Microsoft’s Major Nelson posted a small explanation to Reddit earlier, admitting the fault and explaining how the error occurred.
Microsoft tests all Xbox 360 games with our emulator to ensure a quality experience across a breadth of titles. Due to an error, some of the games currently in test were accidentally made available. We have since removed access to those games, and apologize for any confusion this may have caused. We will have more information on upcoming releases soon.

December 15th is definitely a great day to be a cult film fan as we’ve got a bunch of stellar titles making their home entertainment bows this week. Scream Factory is releasing several films on Blu this Tuesday—The Car, Zombie High and the double feature of The Dungeonmaster and Eliminators—and Arrow Video is keeping busy as well with their special editions of both Blood Rage and What Have You Done to Solange?
Other notable titles include The Last Horror Film, Count Dracula, The Toxic Avenger Collection, a double feature of Axe and Kidnapped Coed as well as the most recent iteration of Fantastic Four.
The Car (Scream Factory, Blu-ray)
The peaceful tranquility of a small Western town is disturbed when a murderous car wreaks havoc by viciously mowing down innocent victims. The new sheriff, Wade Parent (James Brolin), may be the only one who can stop this menace in its tracks.

The Sundance Film institute has released the line-up of film for the 2016 Sundance Film Festival. Going to Sundance is one of my favorite events of the year. I love going because you never know what kind of movies you're going to see. Sometimes they are great films that amaze and entertain, other times they completely suck ass, but that's all part of the fun of going to the festival. It's an awesome experience for any hardcore movie geek, and if you ever get a chance to go, you need to.
The event takes place in Park City, Utah next year from January 21st to the 31st. It looks like there's a great line-up of movies at next year's event. My favorite portion of the event is the Midnight section because it deals more with geeky genre type movies, but I also enjoy the various sections of other line-ups.

Arrow Video’s American Horror Project Blu-ray Box Sets to Feature Restorations of Cult Classic Films

'Million Dollar Baby' movie with Hilary Swank and Clint Eastwood. 'Million Dollar Baby' movie: Clint Eastwood contrived, overlong drama made (barely) watchable by first-rate central performance Fresh off the enthusiastically received – and insincere – Mystic River, Clint Eastwood went on to tackle the ups and downs of the boxing world in the 2004 melo Million Dollar Baby. Despite the cheery title, this is not the usual Rocky-esque rags-to-riches story of the determined underdog who inevitably becomes a super-topdog once she (in this case it's a “she”) puts on her gloves, jumps into the boxing ring, and starts using other women as punching bags. That's because about two-thirds into the film, Million Dollar Baby takes a radical turn toward tragedy that is as unexpected as everything else on screen is painfully predictable. In fact, once the dust is settled, even that last third quickly derails into the same sentimental mush Eastwood and...

Seeking the Monkey KingIt is all too fitting that a film series focusing on “3D in the 21st Century” should feature the work of Ken Jacobs. More than any other single avant-garde filmmaker, Jacobs has explored the pulsating, tremulous frontier where images hit the eyes, and a great deal of his exploration over the last 30+ years—beginning with his experiments with the Pulfrich filter and his development of the dual projection “Nervous System”—has involved three-dimensional illusionism, that ambiguous perceptual space where flatness and depth wrestle in the optical mind. Historically, aesthetically, and technologically, it would make no sense to consider cinema in three dimensions without including Jacobs’ contributions. But there’s more at stake in Jacobs’ presence in the Bam’s 3D series. No mere formalist, Jacobs has been a tireless artistic whistleblower, documenting and cataloging the ugliest aspects of American culture. From blackface and animal torture in Star Spangled to Death,...

Just over a year ago, coming in hot from Martin Scorsese's "The Wolf Of Wall Street," buds Jonah Hill and Leonardo DiCaprio saw 20th Century Fox snap up the rights to the Vanity Fair article, "American Nightmare: The Ballad Of Richard Jewell” for the pair to star in. That was about the last anyone really heard of it, but the now the project has a big name director taking a look. Deadline reports that Clint Eastwood is circling the director's chair on the movie, but it seems that a dance between studios will need to be worked out before anything happens. The filmmaker has a longtime home at Warner Bros., so some sort of possible co-production deal with 20th Century Fox is being looked at. As for the story, it follows the 34 year-old security guard, Richard Jewell, who was falsely identified as the FBI's prime suspect in the...

Out of all the horrifying titles I subjected myself to in 2014, no film boasted a more sinister persona than Jake Gyllenhaal’s turn as renegade videographer Louis Bloom in Dan Gilroy’s Nightcrawler. The actor digs deep and uncovers one of society’s most dangerous minds, yet he does so by hiding an unsettling psychopath underneath a cool, calm, and collected “anybody” who is five steps ahead of the game. He’s no Patrick Bateman, assimilating through charm and charisma, but Gyllenhaal’s sick puppeteering finds an even more evil level that a naked, chainsaw-swinging Bateman simply can’t compete with. It’s a shame that Gyllenhaal’s name isn’t being tossed around with the other deserving Oscar nominees, because the transformation he undertakes is no easy feat. Not since Elijah Woods’ leading role in Maniac have I been so horrified by one deceptively stable man.
