Don't expect too much and you will enjoy it

Warning: Spoilers
"Richy Guitar" is a German movie from the 1980s and it will soon have its 30th anniversary. The cast in here includes Farin Urlaub and Bela B., two long-time members from the German punk rock band "Die Ärzte". You need to keep in mind that these two and several others in this film are trained musicians and you should not be surprised that this film is not a revelation in terms of actors' range or acting in general. However, the music scenes are pretty nice and that includes the Nena cameo. The only actress in here I was familiar with is Ingrid van Bergen, still alive today way into her 80s.

The writer and director is Michael Laux and I have to say I am not familiar with him at all. Then again, these 90 minutes here are almost his only work in filmmaking. As a consequence, this is also not a particularly memorable film in terms of the script. It's not really interesting most of the time and the character elaborations could have been a lot better. However, there is one thing that this film has: style. I am not surprised punks today still watch this and consider it a bit of a classic in terms of their movement and approach to life. It feels very authentic most of the time and if that is what Laux was primarily trying to achieve, then I recommend the watch. If you have a bit of interest into the scene, then it's worth checking out. I hoped the city of Berlin (my home place) could have played a bigger role other than just being the setting, but unfortunately not. Still it was a decent watch with occasionally great music. Thumbs up.

Brilliant!

I may be biased because I am a MASSIVE fan of Die Ärzte but I really loved this movie, even though my German is quite poor. It's easy to understand and quite funny. It's also well made considering the fact I don't think it had an enormous budget. But Bela and Farin were great in it, and the girl who played Anje was good, unless she's that horrible in real life. For non-fans, it's main appeal would be the complete and utter Eighties-ness of it, which is simply hilarious. Such enormous hair-do's, and Anje's scene where dances away her pain. Classic!

Very funny to see for fans of Die Ärzte

I guess nearly everybody who watches the movie today does so because the (at least in Germany) famous punk-rock band Die Ärzte played the main characters, at a time when they weren't popular yet. Anyway, the movie is very funny to watch. It's a pretty low budget production, and it's not really "great", but it's interesting to see what it was like in the early 80's in Germany. Die Ärzte don't act to bad, although it is a bit funny that Farin plays the main characters, as in the later years Bela would turn out to be the better actor. I guess he was to strange for the producer... It's as I said, if you are a fan of Die Ärzte you should definately watch the movie, if you are not, or are not even from Germany, you might not find it too interesting unless you are in teenage dramas that are realistic (which means they are NOT like American Pie or something like that).

For "Die Ärzte" - Fans

I'm a huge fan of "Die Ärzte", I love this movie. If you don't know or don't like the Best Band in the world (official title :D), you don't need to see this movie. It has nothing special beside "Die Ärzte", sorry I'm biased :D.

This movie is cult! Die Ärzte call themselves now "Best band of the world" and this movie is a reason to agree. Although we'll see Sahnie instead of now bass guitar Rod and this is NOT a biography, you are granted inside looks into the German punk scene of the 80's!
