Kendrick Lamar has heard Drake and J. Cole’s most recent subliminal disses, and he’s done playing games. In his guest verse on Future and Metro Boomin’s new song “Like That,” the rapper comes after his friends turned foes.
After opening his verse by calling out “n****s talkin’ out of they necks,” Kendrick name-drops Drake and Cole’s 2023 hit “First Person Shooter” off the former’s album, For All the Dogs: “Fuck sneak dissin’, ‘First Person Shooter,’ I hope they came with three switches.”
This line is a direct response to Cole boasting on “First Person Shooter” about being the “hardest Mc” out of the so-called Big Three rappers of their generation. “Is it K-Dot? Is it Aubrey? Or me?” he raps. “We the Big Three like we started a league, but right now, I feel like Muhammad Ali.”

When Ben DeBacker (Corey Fogelmanis), the nonbinary protagonist of Tommy Dorfman’s charming directorial debut I Wish You All the Best, decides to come out to their parents, the results are disastrous.
The conversation is rendered in flashes, adding a suspenseful layer to the melancholic moment. We see Ben reviewing notes on an index card; we watch them shuffle nervously to the kitchen. Before we know it, Ben is calling his estranged sister Hannah (Alexandra Daddario) for help. The North Carolina teen is crouched in a corner of a gas station grocery store with no shoes and holes in their socks. It’s only when Hannah shows up — worried and out of breath — that the gravity of the situation sets in.

Kristine Froseth is used to being the new girl. The New Jersey-born actress moved from Norway and back every few years for her father’s banking job, seesawing between friendships and cultures. Due to her nomadic lifestyle, she struggled to find herself during her formative years, she says, similar to her character Nan St. George in Apple TV’s The Buccaneers.
“I just wanted to fit in so desperately,” Froseth tells Rolling Stone. “So, I adapted to whatever people were doing. I was a chameleon.”
In The Buccaneers, whose finale dropped Dec.

This post contains spoilers for the "Dirty Harry" films.
Don Siegel's "Dirty Harry" changed cop movies forever upon its release in 1971. Capitalizing on the "law and order" craze stoked by President Richard Nixon, which was a reaction to the perceived anarchy of the various protest movements of the 1960s, Clint Eastwood's Miranda rights-flouting Harry Callahan fed conservative moviegoers a big, juicy slab of red meat. It also allowed the actor to flourish in a genre outside of Westerns, thus expanding his appeal and turning him into one of the most bankable stars in Hollywood.
"Dirty Harry" ends with Callahan, having caught and killed (in self-defense) a vicious serial killer, hurling his badge into a quarry. Throughout the movie, his hard-driving, occasionally extrajudicial methods, which could've resulted in a swift arrest and saved multiple lives, are decried by his superiors. It appears the inspector has had enough. Audiences, however,...

Ella Williams has readied Tomorrows’s Fire, her latest album as Squirrel Flower. The LP arrives October 13th via Polyvinyl, and along with the news, Squirrel Flower has announced a lengthy new run of international tour dates and shared two songs from the project.
Williams self-produced Tomorrows’s Fire alongside engineer Alex Farrar. Inspired by the likes of Jason Molina, Tom Waits, and Bruce Springsteen, the artist describes the record as more of a rock album than any of her folksy previous releases. To achieve its heavier feel, she enlisted Matt McCaughan (Bon Iver), Seth Kauffman (Angel Olsen band), Jake Lenderman, and Dave Hartley (The War on Drugs) to comprise her studio band. Pre-orders for the project are ongoing.
Grungy single “Full Time Job” finds Squirrel Flower trying to balance life’s necessities — namely, working to survive — with the search for actual happiness. “Doing my best is a full time...

Early in Lena Dunham’s bittersweet Sharp Stick, which goes wide this week, two young women are treated, yet again, to their origin stories. Their mother, Marilyn (Jennifer Jason Leigh), believes in ritual. Treina (Taylour Paige) is the biological daughter of a stranger Marilyn met and befriended some years ago, who ran away with a Scientologist after giving birth, leaving the thirtysomething Marilyn — whose own chances at pregnancy were thought to be slim — to care for the young woman she’d grow to call her daughter. Sarah Jo (Kristine Froseth), meanwhile,...

[Note: The following review contains spoilers for “Better Call Saul” Season 6, Episode 2, “Carrot and Stick.”]
One of Jimmy McGill’s (Bob Odenkirk) greatest strengths is pinpointing people’s relationship to money. It’s a psychological pressure point that he’s used to his advantage when dealing with people who have everything to lose. As someone who fashions himself a bit of a legal vigilante, Jimmy gives himself a steady dose of self-righteousness, justifying a little ethical murkiness if it separates someone from what they didn’t rightfully earn.
So how better to illustrate that “angle called justice” than a reunion with Albuquerque’s quaintest, nine-figure fraudsters, Craig and Betsy Kettleman (Jeremy Shamos and Julie Ann Emery)? Hurtling toward an ending that’ll likely have far more of the latter than the former, the second episode of Season 6 finds room for a blend of tragedy and comedy. Most of it is centered in the husband-and-wife embezzlement duo that...

Earlier this year, a debate briefly flared on social media: where have the superstars gone? What happened to the days when Kendrick Lamar and Drake battled for global supremacy, Kanye West elicited praise from the likes of David Lynch, the Future Hive controlled rap Twitter, Lil Wayne was the best rapper alive, and Nicki Minaj commanded the Hot 100? With those “stadium status” acts largely past their imperial phases – perhaps the jury is out on Pulitzer Kenny, who has yet to issue a follow up to his 2017 album Damn – the genre seems irrevocably atomized.

Utopia has taken U.S. rights to writer-director-producer Lena Dunham’s latest directorial Sharp Stick which made its world premiere at this year’s Sundance Film Festival. A theatrical release is planned for later this year.
The pic marks the Girls creator’s return to feature filmmaking a decade after the start of that award-winning HBO series, and 12 years since her breakout picture Tiny Furniture won SXSW Film Festival’s Grand Jury Prize.

Working as a caregiver and just longing to be seen, she begins an exploratory affair with her older, married employer (Jon Bernthal), and is thrust into a startling education on sexuality, loss and power. Following the 2022 Sundance premiere of Lena Dunham’s third feature, “Sharp Stick,” autism activist Amy Gravino took to Twitter to allege that she was approached to be a consultant during production, though her services were never utilized. Gravino, who specializes in de-stigmatizing autism sexuality, tweeted on January 20 that she “was asked to consult on #SharpStick, because the main character was written to be (yet never identified as) autistic.”
“Right before I was set to meet with the lead actress [Kristine Froseth] and [writer-director] Lena Dunham, a decision was made to no longer have the character be autistic,” Gravino wrote in her Twitter thread. “What also surprised me about the change of course was that I was told Lena Dunham had done research on me and was excited to meet me.”

After Lena Dunham’s new movie “Sharp Stick” was criticized on Twitter by an autism activist who claimed she was approached to be a consultant on the project, the filmmaking team behind the Sundance film says that the central character, Sarah Jo, was never written to be on the spectrum. Producers say the drama about a young woman’s sexual awakening was inspired entirely by creator Lena Dunham’s personal journey, dealing with severe endometriosis which resulted in a hysterectomy.
“Sarah Jo was never written nor imagined as a neurodivergent woman,” a spokesperson for the film says, in part, in a statement to Variety. “Nothing about Sarah Jo was coded to suggest or convey neurodivergence. In drawing this very personal portrait mined from her own experience, Lena did recognize that audiences would identify with Sarah Jo in myriad ways. This is the power of art, in this case, film. The Hollywood reckoning over the last few years has led to the downfall of many top celebrities who faced accusations of sexual misconduct, including Bill Cosby, Matt Lauer and Kevin Spacey. The stars’ tarnished reputation has triggered a reexamining of their work, with some of their shows and movies pulled from circulation.
Additionally, networks and streamers have added content warnings to old programs over outdated cultural depictions, especially those related to race, and there has been a movement to end racial stereotypes on-screen, which led to Hank Azaria walking away from his long-time character Apu on The Simpsons and several animated series recasting roles of Black/mixed-race characters who had been voiced by white actors.

Olivia Rodrigo grew up watching the High School Musical films and listening to the soundtracks on repeat, and now she's leaving her mark on the franchise with her starring role on Disney+'s new show High School Musical: The Musical: The Series. Not only does the 16-year-old get to remake iconic HSM songs for the show, like "Start of Something New" and "Stick to the Status Quo," but she also had the honor of writing a brand-new song titled "All I Want" for the fourth episode, airing on Friday, Nov. 29.
Since her character, Nini, writes music on the show, Rodrigo explained that the show's creator Tim Federle really wanted to emphasize her singer/songwriter qualities with a new song. "The executives from Disney+ looked on my Instagram and found a video of a song that I wrote, and they used that as a reference," she told Popsugar. "They were like,...

My wife and I were watching “The Tonight Show With Johnny Carson” one night in April, 1985 when Burt Reynolds came on as one of Johnny’s guests. I was interested in the banter between them for a couple of reasons.
I liked Reynolds a lot. Though he had of late been starring in cornball chase movies like “Stroker Ace,” “Cannonball Run” and the “Smokey and the Bandit” films, I would be forever grateful for his dramatic performance in the 1972 “Deliverance.” What a movie! He’d also shown his range in Alan J. Pakula’s light romantic comedy “Starting Over.” Plus, he was just a lot of fun.
More urgently, I was interested because he was on the show to promote a new movie adapted from Elmore Leonard’s novel “Stick.” He was both the movie’s star and its director and, a few months earlier, I’d been on the...

Much has been written about the New Hollywood of the 1970s and how it was formed by a group of bearded film-school grads who grew up on a diet of cinema and broke the hidebound rules of the studio system. But there’s no talking about American film in the Me Decade without discussing the impact of Burt Reynolds, the iconic star who encapsulated so much of the era’s freewheeling attitudes and post-modern sensibilities.
Unlikely the falsely humble stars of yore, Reynolds clearly reveled in being a movie star, whether he was yukking it up on Johnny Carson’s couch or mugging through silly all-star extravaganzas like “The Cannonball Run.” He had the cool of the Rat Pack, but in a way that seemed more attainable to a country mired in recession; Reynolds’ public vibe always leaned closer to a six-pack and a Trans Am than to martinis and limousines.

Burt Reynolds, one of We Are Movie Geeks favorite actors, turns 80 today. Happy Birthday Burt!
On February 11th, 1936, Reynolds was born in Waycross, Georgia, before his family moved to Jupiter Florida, where his father served as Chief of Police. Young Burt excelled at sports and played football at Florida State University. He became an All Star Southern Conference halfback (and was earmarked by the Baltimore Colts) before injuries sidelined his football career. He dropped out of college and headed to New York with dreams of becoming an actor. There he worked in restaurants and clubs while pulling the odd TV job or theater role. Burt was spotted in a New York City stage production of Mister Roberts and signed to a TV contract and eventually had recurring roles in such shows as Gunsmoke (1955), Riverboat (1959) and his own series, Hawk...

Marvel has managed to completely reinvigorate the superhero movie in a massive way. It all began with 2008’s Iron Man and then spread out to the rest of Earth’s Mightiest Heroes, culminating in the release of 2012’s The Avengers. But since then, Marvel hasn’t been content to just focus on the big league superheroes.
Rather, with Phase Two, they’ve started to branch out a little bit more. Not only have there been wild card characters like the Guardians of the Galaxy but Marvel even expanded out into television with Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. Now comes the release of Daredevil, a Marvel-produced series airing exclusively on Netflix: a new move that promises to revolutionize the superhero genre yet again.

Stick
Written by Elmore Leonard and Joseph Stinson
Directed by Burt Reynolds
USA, 1985
Part of the reason that Elmore Leonard’s novels got turned into movies so often is that it was so easy to write the screenplays. Entire scenes full of Leonard’s trademark crackling dialogue would go, verbatim, into films like Get Shorty and Out of Sight. But that wasn’t true for the 1990s only. Leonard’s stellar 1983 novel Stick was turned into a movie as well, a film which served as popular entertainment as much as the films came a decade later. Where Get Shorty was 1995’s Travolta movie, Stick was 1985’s Burt Reynolds movie, and every bit as fun.
Reynolds plays Ernest “Stick” Stickley, a just-out-of-prison car thief who wanders into Miami and finds himself caught between a local drug kingpin (Castulo Guerra) and a bumbling financial planner (George Segal). Also of note: a pre-...

According to IMDb, close to 40 films and TV shows have Elmore Leonard’s name attached, some as creator, some as screenwriter, but about three-quarters because they’re based on one of his novels or short stories. Leonard, who died August 20 of complications following a stroke, didn’t like most of them. Actually, that’s something of an understatement. He hated most of them, the distinction being he hated some more than others.
Leonard had a love/hate thing going with Hollywood. He loved taking movie money, but usually hated what Hollywood did with his material. He went public with his revulsion over Burt Reynold’s thoroughly lousy 1985 adaptation of his novel Stick, and while I don’t know this for a fact, I’m sure he was shaking his head – at least at first — when Quentin Tarantino cast Pam Grier in Jackie Brown (1997) to play what had been a white character in his source novel,...

Crime writer known for Get Shorty, Out of Sight and Hombre whose work served as a barometer of modern America
When Elmore Leonard's Stick was published in Britain in 1984, one newspaper called it "a fine first novel". At almost 60, the author would have been amused at such an accolade; it was, in fact, his 21st novel, and Leonard, who has died aged 87, had been selling his fiction regularly, occasionally to Hollywood. But the genres in which he chose to work often failed to attract serious critical attention: westerns first, then crime novels set in the contemporary urban hinterlands.
Westerns as a literary genre still lack respectability, but the craft and energy of Leonard's crime novels, which include Get Shorty, Out of Sight and Labrava, eventually made them impossible to ignore. Still, recognition came late: only in 1992 did the Mystery Writers of America grant him its highest accolade, the Grand Master Edgar.

In 2001, author Elmore Leonard, who died this morning at the age of 87, wrote a piece for the New York Times in which he laid out, very simply, his ten rules for good writing. You can read the entire piece, with explanations, over at the Times' site, but here are the basic precepts. Print them out. Stick them above your desk. Use them wisely. Never open a book with weather. Avoid prologues. Never use a verb other than "said" to carry dialogue. Never use an adverb to modify the verb "said” … he admonished gravely. Keep your exclamation points under control. You are allowed no more than two or three per 100,000 words of prose. Never use the words "suddenly" or "all hell broke loose." Use regional dialect, patois, sparingly. Avoid detailed descriptions of characters. Don't go into great detail describing places and things. Try to leave out the...

We’ve put a spotlight on some of the UK Christmas telly specials you won’t want to miss this festive season…
You know that pub conversation we’ve all had, the one about what you’d show an alien race on the brink of wiping out planet Earth to convince them we are essentially a well-meaning, productive, and often beautiful species that deserves to live? No contest: a Christmas issue of the Radio Times.
In 1969, an astronaut walked on the moon and someone thought up the Christmas Radio Times, both of them landmarks of brilliant stuff achieved by humans. They must have been thinner then - not astronauts, copies of the Radio Times - back when there were fewer TV channels than there are now Shrek films.
Between the covers of that hefty double edition sits the industry and imagination of generations. It...

This, True Believes, is why people stock up on coffee and snacks, pull up lawn chairs and do whatever it takes to endure those horrendously long lines for Hall H at San Diego Comic-Con: Marvel's "Iron Man 3" panel unleashed a torrent of information about several in-production properties including "Guardians of the Galaxy," the sequels to "Thor" and "Captain America" and much more.
The proceedings kicked off with a montage looking back on the last several years of Comic-Con presentations, including a bit from Marvel Films honcho Kevin Feige talking about how he'd love to see an Avengers movie way back in the pre-schawarma days of 2006. The montage wrapped up with these incredibly exciting words: "Phase Two Begins… Now!" And boom, here came the Marvel bombshells faster than you can say "Excelsior!"

Marvel has big plans for the lucky fans in Hall H today. Their Comic-Con presentation is easily one of the most anticipated of the entire show, and with good reason — a billion and a half dollars worth of reason, in fact.
Among the news that's expected to drop at Comic-Con is the identity of Marvel's mystery movie dated for August 2014. Marvel Studios co-president Louis D'Esposito strongly suggested in an interview with MTV News that the title would finally be revealed during the Hall H presentation, and he even weighed in on two of the leading candidates: "Guardians of the Galaxy" and "Black Panther."
On "Guardians," he said: "That would be Marvel in space. That's a great concept and a great idea, and potentially one of our films in the future."
As for "Black Panther," he noted that T'Challa "has a lot of the same characteristics of a Captain America: great character,...

Of all the spectacularly bizarre experiences I've had at Comic-Con this year, nothing was more surreal than surviving the zombie apocalypse. (Except for my Joss Whedon bathroom encounter. That was pretty surreal.)
We've been reporting on "The Walking Dead Escape" — the bloody obstacle course that took over Petco Park this year — for many weeks now. I was lucky enough … scratch that, I was foolish enough to run the course myself, where I encountered countless members of the undead, brushed up against death at every turn, and stained my hands, pants, shoes and more in the blood of a thousand men.
Okay, that's all a bit dramatic. There were no real zombies, no real deaths, and no real blood. Though I did stain my hands, pants, shoes and more in blood-like fluids, which certainly added some weight to all the horror. "Escape" isn't necessarily filled with scares at every turn, but...

Speaking of that zombie series, we've got another special treat from the AMC gang today. The whole cast of "Breaking Bad" is stopping by, and I don't think it's possible for the MTV News team to be more excited. I'm the one who has the honor of interviewing the White family and friends,...

From MTV Multiplayer: If you're a gamer who likes comic books or vice versa, then the upcoming video game "Injustice: Gods Among Us" should probably be on your radar.
The new fighting game pitches some of the most badass characters in the DC universe against one another, though not all of the playable superheroes and villains have been revealed yet. Well, what better place to make that unveiling than San Diego Comic-Con?
The folks at NetherRealm Studios (the same people who do "Mortal Kombat") announced today that Cyborg and Nightwing are two popular characters who will be making an appearance as playable characters in the game. They'll be joining the already-announced Batman, Harley Quinn, Solomon Grundy, Superman, The Flash and Wonder Woman.
This isn't the first time DC characters have been featured in a video game (just look at "Batman: Arkham City"), but Nightwing and Cyborg are two characters we...

There is only one devil you need to worry about in this blog post, and his name is Solomon Kane.
For your viewing pleasure, we've got an exclusive clip today from "Solomon Kane," the upcoming action movie based on the pulp hero created by Robert E. Howard. We don't want to spoil the whole shebang for you, but suffice to say the clip involves soldiers, demons and an extremely unhinged Kane with a very quick trigger finger. If you need a wake-up call in the form of a tension-filled clip, look no further than right here.
[ video unavailable on this device ]
On top of the clip, "Solomon Kane" is having a special screening at Comic-Con tonight (July 13). It's at 9:15 Pm at the Gaslamp Stadium 15 Pacific Theater, and it's open to the public. If you like what you see in the clip, and you're in the San Diego area, go check out the flick!

There's no place like home, there's no place like home, there's no place like home. That incantation, by the way, has not transported us anywhere — because we're feeling mighty comfortable exactly where we are here in San Diego, having a blast at Comic-Con International.
It's our third day on the ground now, and despite the fact that it's Friday the 13th, luck seems to be very much on our side when it comes to the folks we're speaking with today. Our live-stream shows continue today at 1 p.m. Et / 10 a.m. Pt with interview subjects including "Frankenweenie" director Tim Burton and the cast of "The Expendables 2." Plus, we're speaking with Sam Raimi, Michelle Williams and Mila Kunis for "Oz: The Great and Powerful," and you won't need to slip on ruby slippers to check out our interview with them; you just have to watch the live show to see it all.

It's a Comic-Con rite of passage to wander the convention hallways, mouth agape, trying to take in the vast array of characters on display. But we're not talking about those on the printed pages, the heroes configured as plastic poseables or the associated celebs and filmmakers. Those are cool, but we're talking about the fans who take their devotion to its highest level: Cosplay.
San Diego Comic-Con is nothing without the constant flow of eye candy, as folks wearing costumes of various degrees of quality (and obscurity) from all the realms of pop culture intermingle freely and giddily all week.
Where else can you see "Halo"'s Master Chief, a zombie and two Clone Troopers from Jedi General Plo Koon's "Wolfpack Squadron" all posing together at the same time? Don't worry, if you're not at Comic-Con this year, MTV's cameras have you covered. Heck, even if...

Elmore Leonard’s novels are fuelled by dialogue. Punchy, quick-witted words fired off in a way to give you the lowdown on character And drive you through the story. But film versions? Now that’s a tricky one. For every Out of Sight, Get Shorty, and Rum Punch (filmed as Jackie Brown) there’s a Be Cool, Killshot, and Stick … and the list of negatives outweighs the positives.
