- Lily (Cheryl Ladd), an American travelling on the famous Orient Express train from Venice, Italy to Paris, France, suddenly runs into her former lover, Alex (Stuart Wilson), who met and had a tender romance 10 years earlier while vacationing in France, which ended abruptly when he walked out on her without saying a word. Now Alex tries to make up for lost time with Lily while she digs into his past to find out what haunting secrets that he has which led to their abrupt break-up. Alex reads about her in a magazine and purposely boards the Orient Express in order to explain what happened 10 years ago. He asks her to dinner and they're able to each explain that both are now after five-year marriages. He admits that he was not able to love his wife Fully because he was in love with 'someone else.' Lily tells him she has a daughter but lies and says she is only three years old. Through flashbacks, we relive their experience in falling in love together. They talk about being together forever but near the end of her vacation he tries to get her to agree to a brief separation in order for him to sort out some issues, which he doesn't explain. This results in an argument. Later, they part but agree to meet up at 9 p.m. at a Paris sidewalk cafe. We see her experience when he did not show up; when she returns to their shared room, she finds he has taken all of his belongings and gone with no explanation. Eventually, we see his perspective, as he meets his domineering father (John Guilgud) as a 22-year-old. The father speaks about Alex's fiancé and imminent wedding. Alex then tells his father he has fallen in love with Lily but the father appears not to understand. He informs Alex the family business is in trouble and he is relying on the fiance's father to merge with the company in order to salvage them financially, implying the marriage is a necessary ingredient. After dinner on the train, he walks her back to her compartment and they kiss passionately. As a gentleman, he is about to walk away when she grabs him and they enter her compartment. They are shown waking together the next morning. During breakfast, he tries to relate his part of the story but she shuts down and sends him away. As they stop at a station short of Paris he gets off the train. He accidentally finds out he has a daughter just as the train pulls away. We see his frantic, haphazard journey trying to catch up with Lily, hitchhiking, then buying a delivery truck, driving to Paris all night. He traces their hotel but they've checked out with no forwarding address, gone sightseeing. He drives everywhere in Paris, including some of the familiar places they toured 10 years ago, just missing them at the Eiffel tower. As he walks through the streets, he comes upon a sidewalk café where he missed their meeting 10 years before. As tears stain his cheeks, he sees three people at a table, two women (Susan Lawson) and a child (Danielle Tylke) and then realizes one is a blonde woman, seated away from him. He approaches but stands forlorn, afraid to be rejected yet again, with 10-year-older Lily running hot and cold towards him. With the encouragement of her girlfriend, she gets up and they embrace just as their daughter trails behind her mother.
