It’s kind of wild that there has never been an official soundtrack album for Choose Me, Alan Rudolph’s 1984 kooky-but-foxy ensemble rom-com. For starters, the movie was distributed by Island Alive, a joint venture between then-indie company Alive Films and Island Records co-founder Chris Blackwell. Secondly, the songs in...

Johnny Cash is set to be honored with a statue being unveiled at the US Capitol next month, House Speaker Mike Johnson and Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries announced on Thursday (August 1st).
Sculpted by Kevin Kresse, the reportedly eight-foot bronze figure will make the Man in Black the first professional musician to receive a statue at the Capitol, according to Rolling Stone. It will be unveiled on September 24th in Emancipation Hall, where it will become part of the National Statuary Hall Collection.
Cash’s statue will be the second sculpture of an Arkansas native to be unveiled at the Capitol this year. A figure honoring civil rights leader Daisy Bates was installed in May.
In 2019, the Arkansas state legislature passed a bill to replace the existing statues of the state’s 18th governor James P. Clarke and 19th-century lawyer Uriah Rose with the likenesses of Cash and Bates, respectively.

Johnny Cash’s new posthumous album, Songwriter, has officially been released.
Out today via Mercury Nashville, Songwriter features 11 songs written by the country artist across his legendary career. Upon rediscovering the project recently, though, Cash’s son John Carter Cash and producer David R. Ferguson set out to complete Songwriter, building new tracks around the original vocal and acoustic guitar with a new group of musicians, including Marty Stuart, Dan Auerbach, Vince Gill, and more. Additionally, the late Waylon Jennings appears on the tracks “I Love You Tonite” and “Like a Soldier.”

A new Johnny Cash song, “Spotlight,” has been unearthed for the late musician’s forthcoming posthumous album, Songwriter.
With The Black Keys’ Dan Auerbach on guitar, “Spotlight” is a warm, bluesy mid-tempo number from Cash. It highlights the country icon’s crystal-clear baritone and features an entrancing guitar solo from Auerbach in the bridge. Helping elevate the song are flourishes of strings, some strutting bongos, and majestic production. Stream “Spotlight” below.
Johnny Cash wrote and recorded “Spotlight” for a demo session in 1993, and his son, John Carter Cash, resurrected his vocals and arrangement for the new album. “Spotlight” is the second offering from Songwriter, following earlier single “Well Alright.” Like each song on Songwriter, “Spotlight” was written solely by Johnny Cash.

An unreleased Johnny Cash album will finally see the light of day, thanks to his son John Carter Cash and a team of world-class country musicians. Titled Songwriter, the project was recorded in 1993, and will be released on June 28th via Mercury Nashville/UMe.
Songwriter features 11 songs written solely by Cash over the course of his then-40-year-long career. He made the album at Lsi Studios in Nashville during a period when he was between contracts, and it ultimately ended up shelved until his son, John Carter, and producer David “Fergie” Ferguson sought to finish it with a group of musicians who played with Cash, including Marty Stuart, Pete Abbott, the late Dave Roe, and others.

The Beatles‘ The White Album is their most eclectic record. In spite of its mix of styles, one rock star said he influenced 75% of the album — and he has a quote from George Harrison to back that up. Notably, the star recalled helping John Lennon write an emotional ballad for the album.
The Beatles’ ‘White Album’ was inspired by the guitar playing style of another rock star
Donovan is a singer known for folk tunes like “Catch the Wind,” “There Is a Mountain,” and “Colours,” as well as psychedelic tracks like “Sunshine Superman,” “Hurdy Gurdy Man,” and “Mellow Yellow.” He was there during The Beatles’ storied trip to India to learn about meditation from the Maharishi Mahesh Yogi. During a 2013 interview with Performing Songwriter, he discussed how he influenced The Beatles at that time.
“John looked at me playing guitar one day and said, [imitating Lennon] ‘How do you do that?...

In India, The Beatles were not regular tourists. They stayed at an ashram (monastery) in the holy city of Rishikesh to learn about spirituality from the Maharishi Mahesh Yogi, the founder of Transcendental Meditation. One of The Beatles’ companions said the Fab Four had issues with the press. The Indian Army intervened, but even they couldn’t get rid of all of the reporters.
A guru got a local army in India to help The Beatles
Several other celebrities were present during The Beatles’ trip. They included actor Mia Farrow, Mike Love of The Beach Boys, and folk singer Donovan. Donovan had a string of hits between 1965 and 1969. They included “Hurdy Gurdy Man,” “Sunshine Superman,” “Catch the Wind,” “Mellow Yellow,” and “There Is a Mountain.”
During a 2016 interview with Vulture, Donovan shared some anecdotes from Rishikesh. “No press managed to break into the ashram when we were all there,” he said.

Singer-songwriter Raye opened her maiden Saturday Night Live appearance with a performance of “Escapism,” from last year’s My 21st Century Blues, her debut studio album.
The scene on stage was similar to when Raye recorded a live version of her album at London’s Royal Albert Hall last fall. For that occasion, Raye was joined by the Flames Collective, a 30-piece gospel choir, and the Heritage Orchestra.
Raye’s first LP won Album of the Year at the Brit Awards in March, and at that ceremony, Raye herself also...

Donovan was there during The Beatles‘ trip to India. He and the Fab Four were having the sort of heady conversation people should have at a spiritual retreat. Donovan and the Fab Four had some very similar opinions.
Donovan and The Beatles discussed ‘the inner world’ in India
During a 2013 interview with Performing Songwriter, the “Sunshine Superman” singer explained how he became interested in meditation. “Reading Jack Kerouac and hearing the word ‘Zen’ and going on to Buddhism, then rediscovering the Eastern philosophies and the word’ meditation,’ I realized that there was an actual technique for finding the inner world that we’d lost in the West.”
The “Hurdy Gurdy Man” star felt that the world needed more spirituality. “The great teachers — Carl Jung, Sigmund Freud, Joseph Campbell — spoke of being able to enter the inner world, where all things come from and all things return,” he said. “Not a religion.

There was plenty of uncertainty surrounding the Latin Grammys this year. For the first time, the award show was planned in Sevilla, Spain, a cross-continental move that sparked plenty of debate.
The European country has had a complicated place with the awards show, and prior to the ceremony, fans pointed out it’s not part of Latin America — though the Latin Grammys have always considered all music, as long as it’s 51 percent in Spanish. Still, others worried that hosting the show across the world would cause logistical issues for...

A detailed investigation by the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation has raised questions about the indigenous persona of singer/songwriter Buffy Sainte-Marie.
Sainte-Marie has been feted as the first Indigenous person to win an Academy Award for cowriting the song Up Where We Belong for the film An Officer and a Gentleman.
Sainte-Marie, 82, has claimed that she was born on Tribal land and adopted by white parents. The CBC countered that in a report published Friday and in an accompanying episode of the documentary series The Fifth Estate. The media outlet obtained a birth certificate saying Sainte-Marie was born to parents of European ancestry in Massachusetts.
The CBC reported that the birth certificate from Stoneham, Mass. showed “Beverly Jean Santamaria” and her parents listed as white. The CBC said it had the document authenticated by Stoneham town clerk Maria Sagarino.
Sainte-Marie, alerted to the revelations that would be coming, issued a statement posted to social media Thursday.

The Beatles’ influence extended to other artists and rock bands. John Lennon commented on other bands “copying” their international success, saying it’s “just a laugh” to see their similarities. Here’s what we learned about this songwriter.

Taylor Swift is the Songwriter of the Decade!
The “Red” singer was granted the honorary Songwriter-Artist of the Decade Award by the Nashville Songwriters Association International (Nsai) during Tuesday night’s annual Nsai Songwriter Awards.
In true Swift fashion, her speech was exactly 13 minutes long. She touched upon her songwriting approach, re-recording her first six albums and the extended 10-minute version of “All Too Well” — the track that caused a frenzy among Swifties ever since it was released last year.

“I’m up here receiving this beautiful award for a decade of work, and I can’t possibly explain how nice that feels. Because the way I see it, this is an award that celebrates a culmination of moments,” Swift said during her speech, according to Pitchfork.
“Challenges. Gauntlets laid down. Albums I’m proud of.

Justin Hayward is a legend, and not just of the mind as his bandmate, the late Ray Thomas, once described Timothy Leary. The Moody Blues emerged from the British Invasion to become one of the most influential musical units in popular music. This happened after Mike Pinder heard a demo tape and invited Hayward to join the band and ultimately expand their sound. The Moody Blues predated prog, but were at the forefront of musical experimentation. Not only because they helped explain what you could do with stereo and classical music, but because they expanded the musical vocabulary and the mind. Hayward continues to break new sonic ground as his newly released Ep, One Summer Day/My Juliette, one track is melodically unlike anything The Moody Blues ever produced, the other could be quite Moody.

If you’ve listened to any pop music since the 1990s, you’ve listened to Max Martin. The Swedish songwriter and record producer has been omnipresent in the industry for decades, and he has masterminded some of the best known hits of the modern era. That includes more than 20 songs that have reached number-one on the Billboard Hot 100 singles chart. Scroll down to see every single one of them.
Martin rose to fame in the 1980s as the frontman of the band It’s Alive before turning to writing and production in the 1990s when he wrote music for pop juggernauts like Britney Spears, Backstreet Boys and Nsync. Spears’s breakthrough hit “Baby One More Time” would be his very first Billboard chart-topper, but far from his last. He followed those collaborations by teaming up with Pink, Katy Perry, Taylor Swift, The Weeknd and more.

Even though the songbird had to leave for a while, Justin Hayward found new melodies for springtime release. The legendary singer-songwriter of the Moody Blues released the digital-only two-track Ep One Summer Day/My Juliette today on Eagle Rock Entertainment. It is available through all digital service providers.
The opening track, “One Summer Day,” is a conversational song with a melodic acoustic guitar underpinning. The songwriter says the piece came out organically. “[It] just sprang out of my old Martin guitar late one evening,” Hayward explained in a statement. “I had been playing the riff for a while just for fun, without realizing it could actually be a song.” According to the press release, it tells “the story of unexpected events taking place one day in the summer.”
It’s a romantic song, in the vein of “Never Comes the Day,” but asks “if not now then when for us, there’s nothing like today.

"When I first started writing songs they were terrible..." Abramorama & Apple Music have released the first official trailer for a documentary titled Songwriter, a film about the music of popular British musician Ed Sheeran. This film was a last minute addition to the line-up at the Berlin Film Festival earlier this year, but it played to dismal reviews and a very muted, forgettable response. "This personal portrait of the British singer-songwriter, filmed by his cousin Murray Cummings, follows this modest performer’s creative process as he writes a new song from scratch that will entrance millions. From an early-morning jam in the garden to the finished song, from the first chord to the honed lyrics." I don't know about everyone else, but it seems a bit too early to be making a doc about Sheeran, doesn't seem like there's too much of his story to share yet. Here's the official...

Ed Sheeran’s documentary Songwriter, which Apple Music acquired in a seven-figure deal before the film’s Tribeca Film Festival deal this spring, is getting ready to hit the stage. The film from Sheeran’s filmmaker cousin Murry Cummings that chronicles the making of his 2017 album Divide will hit theaters via Abramorama beginning August 17 at the IFC Center and in Los Angeles at the ArcLight Hollywood on August 24, followed by streaming exclusively on Apple Music on August 28.
The news came today as Apple released the first trailer for the docu, which goes behind the scenes to detail the intense collaborative process that produced some of Sheeran’s biggest hits including “Shape of You” and “Castle on the Hill.” (Divide won the Best Pop Vocal Album Grammy that year). The pic follows Sheeran on the road, on tour and pretty much everywhere else as he works with producer Benny Blanco and musicians Amy Wadge,...

Songs On Screen: HitFix recurring feature of tributes by writers to their favorite musical moments from TV and film. Check out all the entries in the series here. There are three great songs from American film, and they are all about rainbows. “Over the Rainbow,” “Moon River” and “The Rainbow Connection” – are the three most quintessentially American songs ever to appear on screen, sung by three quintessentially American characters; and all three stand apart as plaintive cries of lonely souls dreaming of someplace far away..”Waiting round the bend” ”where troubles melt like lemondrops” for “the lovers, the dreamers and me” The things these songs share tell you everything needs to know about the character of 20th Century America. The things they don’t share tell you everything you need to know about how that character changed as the era wore on. Let’s start at the top, and the very top it is.

StreamFix keeps you up to date on the best streams of the web. Here's the best of what's up and coming for Netflix, Hulu, Amazon Prime, and Crackle this November. Netflix "Portlandia, Season 4" Here is what you need to do: Go right now and watch the episode where Toni and Candice take over the Portland Trailblazers dance team. It is painfully funny, and their final dance routine is a shocking horror for the ages. "Snowpiercer" (Nov. 22) Chris Evans. On a post-apocalyptic train. With Tilda Swinton in her wildest getup yet. What are you supposed to do, not watch this? "Nebraska" (Nov. 8) Alexander Payne's black-and-white Midwestern pseudo-road movie has a bunch of fabulous moments. The shot of Bruce Dern's relatives watching TV in the living room is sincerely one of the most memorable things I saw in 2013. And all hail June Squibb for showing us how to really...

Carrie Underwood couldn't stop the waterworks as she accepted the Gene Weed Special Achievement Award at the 8th Annual Academy of Country Music Honors in Nashville Tuesday night. "The Academy has been so good to me, country music has been so good to me," the singer said with a smile before a wave of emotion hit. She tried again, "I had so much to say," before admitting through tears, "But I forget it all! What's wrong with me?" Emcee Jake Owen was empathetic. Referencing Underwood's recently announced pregnancy, he turned to the singer's husband, Mike Fisher, seated below the stage.

Victor Victoria, the adventurously frank, bawdy, and hilarious musical starring Julie Andrews as a poor singer who becomes the toast of Paris when she reinvents herself as gay Polish female impersonator Count Victor Grazinski, turns 30 this year, which officially validates its timelessness. The Blake Edwards-directed romp is equal parts farce and social commentary, and it features unforgettable performances by Robert Preston as Victoria's gay mentor Carroll "Toddy" Todd, James Garner as nightclub owner King Marchard, and perhaps most notably, Lesley Ann Warren as the squeaky, naughty, and hysterical showgirl Norma Cassady. Norma is Judy Holliday on a horny sugar high, and that coquettish insanity earned Warren a Best Supporting Actress nomination at the '82 Oscars.
The most famous projects in Warren's oeuvre are as extreme and unpredictable as Norma herself. As a teenager, Warren played the titular naif in Rodgers and Hammerstein's '65 TV version of Cinderella...

I had every intention of seeing three movies today, which is generally the average, but between Bleak Night and Almanya the heavens above Edinburgh opened and I was subjected to so-hard-it’s-slightly-painful rain; I had to forego the latter movie, so inappropriate was my T-shirt and leather jacket combo. However I was so struck, this afternoon, with Festival Fatigue that – though I was quite looking forward to Almanya, a comedy about Turkish immigrants in Germany – I was so exhausted after Bleak Night that part of me was relieved.

Kirk Douglas stars in a true story about a French officer in Ww I who locks horns with the military’s top brass after his men are court-martialed for failing to carry out an obvious suicide mission. A perfect film, across the board, with fine support from George Macready as one of the most despicable martinet’s ever captured on film, Ralph Meeker, and Adolphe Menjou, all oily charm as a conniving General.
