Richard Pryor movies were exceptionally popular in the 1970s and 1980s, but that was a problem for TV networks — the comedian’s foul-mouthed jokes were hilarious in theaters but could cause a station to lose its license if broadcast over the public airwaves. That’s why it was common practice to dub R-rated comedies with darns for damns, hecks for hells and fudge for even more profane punchlines. And for at least one Richard Pryor movie, the 1987 comedy Critical Condition, the comedian’s voice was filled in by Full House’s Uncle Joey.
You read that right — producers brought in Dave Coulier and his impression skills to help scrub Critical Condition clean of profanity. Oprah herself couldn’t believe it when she asked Coulier if he would “do Richard Pryor for me.”
How did a nice young actor like Coulier get a job as the voice of America’s premier Black comic?...

Altitude is launching international sales on two films featuring iconic British band Blur at the Berlin European Film Market. The band, consisting of singer Damon Albarn, guitarist Graham Coxon, bass guitarist Alex James and drummer Dave Rowntree, was formed in 1988 and tasted considerable success until it went on hiatus in 2015.
The first film is an untitled feature-length documentary depicting the return of Blur, captured across a year in which the band made a surprise return with their first record in eight years, the #1 album “The Ballad of Darren.” It follows the relationship of the bandmates of over three decades as they come together to record 10 new songs ahead of their sold-out shows at London’s Wembley Stadium in 2023. The second film is “Blur: Live At Wembley Stadium,” a two-hour concert film of the Wembley show.

The late, great Jim Henson's impact on television cannot be understated. Obviously, "Sesame Street" was a trailblazer for children's programming. Using Henson's googly-eyed puppets, the PBS series educated kids about everything from math to the different cultures of the world and the circle of life itself. Henson's "Fraggle Rock" was no less ambitious; beneath the boisterous songs and the rowdy Fraggles' shenanigans was a radical peacenik series Henson hoped would "change the world and stop war."
"Muppet Babies," an animated show featuring Henson's Muppets as pint-sized toddlers in a nursery, set its sights nearly as high. At first, Henson was hesitant to collaborate on the series with Marvel Productions, worrying the studio's children's cartoons based on known properties in the 1970s and early '80s lacked the depth of his previous TV ventures. In time, though, it was the very challenge of producing a cartoon that held to...

The Muppet Babies say they’ll make our dreams come true but do they mean it? How long has it been that you’ve seen an episode of Muppet Babies? For some of us maybe since it went off the air in 1991 while the rest of us probably most recently caught it during its reruns not long after. And unless we’re talking bootlegs or VHS rips, that will probably be the last time we see the animated show. So what gives? Where are the diaper-clad versions of Kermit, Piggy, Fozzie, and the rest of the gang?
According to Guy Gilchrist, who worked under Jim Henson (albeit not on Muppet Babies), the reason we will never have the show has to do with rights. If you remember, the show would frequently incorporate clips of classic movies, TV shows and more as part of the Muppets’ fantasies, putting them in the...

Muppet Babies is one of the rare 1980s animated shows that are not available to stream, and Jim Henson cartoonist Guy Gilchrist is revealing why.
During a recent appearance at L.A. Comic Con, Gilchrist gave some answers as to why the Muppet Babies was not available to stream on any of the digital platforms.
Gilchrist said it comes down to “copyrights and trademarks” as the reason why the show has not been able to get into a streaming service. The cartoonist said in an interview with Dennis Does LA that back in the 80s, there was “camaraderie” between the studios, something that doesn’t exist today amid the big corporate takeovers.
“Besides using the stuff that was in the public domain, like the silent stuff that we used in the dream sequences… Remember, the editing on that was incredibly wonderful. We used a lot of film clips from a lot of different things,...

To talk about Peter Cullen's voice acting career is to take a trip through the last five decades of mainstream U.S. animation. The man has lent his voice to so many noteworthy cartoon series that it boggles the mind, including "Scooby-Doo and Scrappy-Doo," "The Smurfs," "Spider-Man and His Amazing Friends," "Voltron: Defender of the Universe," "Alvin and the Chipmunks," "Muppet Babies," "Chip 'n Dale Rescue Rangers," and "Invincible." But one cannot even begin to do justice to his body of work without touching on the iconic character that he's voiced across multiple animated shows and feature films for nearly 40 years now. Truly, at this point, Cullen is all but synonymous with his onscreen counterpart: Eeyore.
After debuting as the Autobots' intrepid leader in "The Transformers" in 1984, Cullen took over voicing the most relatable resident of the Hundred Acre Wood from the late Ralph Wright (who voiced...

Existence is absurd.
At least, that’s what Nathan W. Pyle believes. Birthed out of his very cute and very literal comics, Pyle’s upcoming Apple TV + series “Strange Planet” dares to grapple with the oddity that is life and how we all manage to get through it.
Since the start of 2019, Pyle has been drawing the webcomic series under the same name. Little alien-like characters he called the Beings lived in shades of pink, blue and purple, trying — in a very matter-of-fact way — to process emotions and the difficult stages of life we all go through. Pyle traded words like alcohol or food for “mild poisoning” and “sustenance,” or hug for “limb enclosure.” In just four little squares, Pyle was able to poke fun at the strangeness of human life by rewiring the way people think about language. In a little over four years, he amassed 6.5 million followers on his “Strange Planet” Instagram page,...

Montserrat Luna-Ballantyne is walking in circles, picket sign raised high, with a scant group outside an NBCUniversal gate on a Thursday morning that is beginning to turn warm. The striking Writers Guild of America member (With Love) comes to NBCUniversal frequently — it’s nearby to where to she lives, and she can take the bus — but this morning is slightly different, less dutiful, than a typical three-hour shift.
As songs like Sixpence None the Richer’s “Kiss Me” and Natalie Imbruglia’s “Torn” play on a speaker at the gate, Luna-Ballantyne is doing the circuit, from one sidewalk to another, nearby one writer in a Xena: Warrior Princess t-shirt and another in a spaghetti strap dress. She herself is wearing butterfly clips, a choker and earrings shaped like the cartoon cat Luna from Sailor Moon. “I enjoy coming to themed pickets — it mixes it up a little bit,” she says while pausing.

The recent passing of Harry Belafonte — and the viral proliferation of a clip featuring the iconic singer/actor/activist crooning “Day-o” in front of a boat packed with dancing pigs — was a reminder of how many stars of a certain generation were at their most relaxed and ebullient as participants on The Muppet Show.
Some 44 years after Belafonte did The Muppet Show, the powers that be at Disney and the Muppet Studio continue to go out of their way to find avenues for Muppet programming that inexplicably avoid just doing The Muppet Show for a new generation. There’s a willingness to fritter this priceless brand away on tangential projects that vanish quickly and forgettably instead of bringing the characters and the A-list stars who love them together in one spoof-and-song-driven space.

Muppet Babies, a reboot of the 1984 animated series of the same name, premiered in 2018 with a slight twist: the pattern of the nanny’s socks change every episode. That variation spawned a copyright infringement lawsuit against Disney from Jeffrey Scott, a screenwriter of the original series, that was dismissed due to unusual circumstances surrounding his personal bankruptcy.
After some legal maneuvering by Scott in bankruptcy court to revive his case, a federal judge on Monday rebuffed Disney’s bid to dismiss the lawsuit. U.S. District Judge Stanley Blumenfeld found that Disney may have copied elements of the show from the original Muppet Babies production bible that Scott created in the 1980s. The order keeps in line with recent mandates from a federal appeals court not to prematurely dismiss copyright cases at the pleading stage.
Scott in 2020 sued Disney, but the case didn’t get far.

I know people who think Rogue One is the best movie ever made within the Star Wars universe, and I also know people who think it’s the worst. While my own opinion goes to neither extreme, it’s a polarization that points to something indisputable: In a franchise in which manufactured uniformity has often been the ideal, Rogue One is an outlier, the one movie that’s wholly different in tone, style and characterization.
Since it’s a prequel to Rogue One, Disney+’s new drama series Andor doesn’t have quite the same outlier status. But just as Rogue One was a bracing palate cleanser from big screen stories of Jedis and Skywalkers, Andor feels in all ways its own creature after the variably successful Disney+ exercises in fan service that were The Mandalorian, The Book of Boba Fett and Obi-Wan Kenobi.

Back in 2004, Disney bought the rights to The Muppets from the Jim Henson Company and since then we've seen a couple of films and an attempt at a TV series that didn't work out very well. It was also recently announced that they were going to give it another try and develop a new series for their streaming service and they have a Muppet Babies animated series on the way.
Now, I love The Muppets, but I haven't really been that impressed with what they've done with the property so far. I know a lot of fans feel the same way. It just doesn't have the same kind of magic that it used to have. Legendary Muppets performer Frank Oz recently opened up about this and in his comments, he says that Disney just doesn't get it.

The Muppets are, unsurprisingly, not done with television, thanks to Disney’s grandiose self-distribution designs. Consequently, plans for another television platform for the late Jim Henson’s fuzzy anthropomorphic oddities – undoubtedly some of the most recognisable characters around the world – will serve as one of the major television attractions for the Mouse’s developing streaming service.
With Disney’s streaming service seemingly telegraphing the touting of a potent intellectual property catalogue, the unmistakably iconic presence of The Muppets will, indeed, join the streaming cavalcade, according to THR. Of course, this iteration of the venerable puppet property will arrive not too long after Disney – which acquired The Muppets Studio back in 2004 – released its previous television reboot of The Muppets with an updated series that, due to low ratings and harsh critiques,...

In the first season of “Stranger Things,” the quartet of young men (“the party,” to use the parlance of Dungeons and Dragons) is clearly a direct homage to the show’s love of Stephen King (many of King’s narratives revolve around similar friend groups). But it’s the addition of Eleven to the group — the “mage,” as Mike likes to refer to her — that aligns the show with an even more common trope.

So, spoiler alert. The comic industry as we know it is going to die. Well, according to Dan Didio and Jim Lee it is. At the San Diego Comic Con – which I clearly didn’t attend because I already knew comics were dying – the DC honchos all but shook their rain sticks at the assembled retailers to eulogize the industry before revealing how they would save it.
Forgive me. You no doubt heard the thundering cacophony of my right eyebrow arching high on my face at a speed worthy of Barry Allen. The speed at which it jutted there clearly broke the sound barrier in a reflex akin only to those meta-humans with the ability to transcend space and time.

There are a few new faces but not many new ideas in the fifth instalment of the increasingly becalmed Disney franchise
Given the sorry fate of other projects derived from Disney theme-park attractions – The Country Bears (2002), The Haunted Mansion (2003) – it’s astonishing that the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise should have remained financially seaworthy through four passable-to-indifferent features. With Pirates 5 (subtitled Dead Men Tell No Tales in the Us, and Salazar’s Revenge in a number of other countries) the cracks in the hull become unignorable.
Orlando Bloom has pleaded for reduced participation, handing his sextant to on-screen offspring Brenton Thwaites; Skins alumna Kaya Scodelario inherits Keira Knightley’s corsets. The series, in other words, has entered its Muppet Babies or Scrappy-Doo phase, with all the pop-cultural heft that implies.

Every week, IndieWire asks a select handful of TV critics two questions and publishes the results on Tuesday. (The answer to the second, “What is the best show currently on TV?” can be found at the end of this post.)
This week’s question: What does it take to make a good prequel TV series? (And feel free to include an example of a show that got it right or wrong.)
Allison Keene (@KeeneTV), Collider
A prequel TV series is the most successful when it uses familiar touchstones but creates its own world. “Hannibal” is probably the best example of this, where there were characters we recognized but the setting, experience, and modern time period were completely Bryan Fuller’s (wonderfully so). “Bates Motel” has been another positive example, especially as it nears its end. The time period is again modernized, but it keeps a surreal and retro feel. And...

Disney is planning a Muppet Babies reboot, reviving the popular zany, infant-filled quasi-prequel of the 1980’s.
Even though Disney’s last attempt to bring The Muppets back to television resulted in an ABC series cancelled after a single season, plans are in the works for more small screen Muppets mayhem.

Disney Junior has announced that the one and only Muppet Babies will be getting the reboot treatment on the young children’s cable channel. While the original 1980’s CBS Saturday morning standard featured conventionally drawn animation, the upcoming reboot will instead manifest as a CGI-based series (as seen in the picture above), structuring each episode into a duo of 11-minute stories. The Muppet Babies are returning to television and I feel embarrassed to admit I'm excited about it. I remember watching the cartoon a lot as a kid and as soon as I saw the news, the theme song started playing in my head as if it never left:
Collider says the babies will return to television on Disney Jr., but this time in puppet form (seen in the header image above). I seem to remember the show being really good, but I wasn't even in school at the time, so I may be remembering it differently. The show is being worked on by Eric Shaw, who was a driving force behind SpongeBob SquarePants, so it sounds like the series is in good hands.
Am I weird? Are you excited for this? Please tell me you are.

Just in case you've been living in the Upside Down, let me get you up to speed: Stranger Things Season 2 is officially happening. And as revealed by the show's unreasonably-attractive creators the Duffer Brothers, the new episodes will be set a year after the events of the first season, which would place the characters squarely in the latter days of 1984 (Season 1 took place between November and December of 1983). While that's not a whole lot later, it's still enough time for a massive number of pop-culture and consumer products to have been introduced in the interim, from film to TV to music to technology. So what, pray tell, will Mike, Dustin, Lucas, Nancy, Jonathan and Steve (but not Barb, obvs) be using, watching, wearing, reading and listening to in the new season that wouldn't have been available to them in the prior timeline because they didn't exist yet? For those curious...

E4’s new comedy, starting tonight, about a group of West Country 20-somethings boasts a star turn from Sean Bean…
Looking back now, the most outlandish part of brilliantly inventive 1999 sitcom Spaced isn’t a movie parody, cutaway gag or eccentric character, but the idea that you could rent a fully furnished two-bedroom flat in Zone Two for ninety quid a week. If Tim Bisley and Daisy Steiner were house-hunting in London today, they’d be forced to pack up their Gillian Anderson posters and typewriter and head back to their respective hometowns to crash on a mate’s sofa.
That’s the fate of Kent (Dylan Edwards) in the first episode of Wasted, a new UK comedy series starting tonight on E4.

Netflix. Netflix. Netflix.
These days, whenever I stumble into a conversation about favorite television shows, Netflix is often at the top of the list. House of Cards and Orange is the New Black debuted in 2013, the phrase “binge viewing” became more popular than ever. And, I can’t lie, Daredevil and Jessica Jones were at the top of my 2015 binge-viewing list.
For some, Amazon also floats in that hemisphere thanks to its deal with HBO as well as licensed shows like Downton Abbey and original programs like Transparent.
However, broadcast TV still offers plenty of TV that’s still worth binge watching – something you can do in the off-season (on DVD or through a streaming service) or during a mid-season hiatus.
One show I would like to offer up is The Muppets.
Now, don’t get me wrong, typically I prefer serialized comedies that offer some level of character growth and story progression.

When does a story end? More important: When is a story supposed to begin?
Die Hard, arguably the greatest man-fights-terrorists-in-a-skyscraper movie ever made, begins on a plane with its scraggly hero being lectured about his feet. It's revealed, almost immediately, that our man John McClane has been a blue-blooded member of the NYPD for 11 years — we don't know a damn thing about a single one of his cases, but it's clear from the lines on his face and the exhaustion in his voice that some of them were never closed.

The opening credits to The Muppets is just a title card — black text on a white background, underscored by a xylophone rendition of the “it’s time to get things started” from The Muppet Show theme song. It’s totally fine, but remember the Muppets Show theme song? How about Muppet Babies? Oh man, remember the music from the movies? Two episodes in, and that kind of disappointed nostalgia is where I stand on The Muppets in general. It’s fun. It’s watchable. But why watch anything else when you could rewatch The Muppet Movie for the gazillionth time instead? To be fair, it’s not The Muppets’ creators’ fault that, two episodes into a mockumentary-style network sitcom, they’ve been unable to capture the magic of “The Rainbow Connection.” And the Muppets haven’t been an unmitigated success on every outing. (Okay, I am just talking about Muppets From Space here.

I grew up watching the Muppet Babies, loving the whimsy of the odd, but relatable creatures although always frustrated that we couldn't see Nanny's face. Then, Muppets Tonight debuted during my freshman year of high school and I started to really understand the joys of a variety show only later for that to be enhanced by finding clips of The Muppet Show on YouTube. Also, I adored 2011's big screen The Muppets in fact Man or Muppet is still in heavy rotation on my iTunes. So anytime there is a new addition to the Muppets Universe, my inner-child takes notice. However, as details of their new TV show also confusingly called The Muppets started being revealed, that inner child beganto feel left out. The idea was to reinvent the Muppets in a more real-life, adult sitcom yes, a real-life, adult sitcom, starring felt puppets.

Long before he co-created "Big Bang Theory," Bill Prady broke into show business as a low-level Jim Henson Co. staffer, working in licensing and other tangential Muppet-related departments before eventually getting to write for Gonzo and company himself. Now, his career has come full circle, as co-developer (with Bob Kushell) of "The Muppets," a new primetime series featuring Kermit and the gang that debuts on ABC on Tuesday night at 8. Back at press tour, before I had seen a full episode of the show, I spoke with Prady for a while about his history with Henson and these characters, and the specific approach he was taking with the new show, a mockumentary where Kermit is executive producing a late night talk show hosted by Miss Piggy, featuring Fozzie as her announcer, Electric Mayhem as the house band, and all the other familiar Muppet characters working backstage.
