Few actors have a career in the film industry that is as decorated as Gene Hackman’s. Having worked as an actor for over six decades, he has been a part of some of the finest films to have ever been released, and he has been awarded fruitfully for his work. From Oscars to Golden Globes, Gene Hackman has got them all.

Since the first one is always more special than the rest, his first win at the Academy Awards came with the 1972 film The French Connection, though he had been nominated twice before. David Anspaugh's 1986 sports drama "Hoosiers" has gone down in history as one of the most influential sports dramas ever made. Partly inspired by the real-life story of the 1954 Indiana state champions Milan High School, "Hoosiers" focuses on formerly-disgraced basketball coach Norman Dale (Gene Hackman), who gets a rare second chance to prove his mettle at Indiana's Hickory High School. The rather tight-knit town of Hickory seems a little too unforgiving towards Norman due to his sketchy past, but redemption finds its way to him via a David vs. Goliath situation that soon transforms into a classic underdog tale about dreaming big and achieving the impossible.
Some of the more saccharine themes in "Hoosiers" might feel a tad corny at times, but it is a film that brandishes sincere authenticity when it comes to the magic of unexpected second chances and the highs and lows of small-town sports. Moreover, a...

With Ronald Reagan coasting to a landslide reelection in 1984 via patriotic posturing and Cold War fear-mongering, the time was right for John Milius' "Red Dawn." This expertly crafted martial fantasy about the Soviet Union capitalizing on a global catastrophe to invade a geopolitically isolated United States made a killing at the box office thanks largely to teenagers who believed they could, via ingenuity and love for country, lead a guerilla resistance against the freedom-hating Commie horde.
I fell hard for it as a 10-year-old in 1984, and still love it as a strange, heartfelt relic of post-Vietnam confidence building. Americans were so desperate for a military victory that they puffed their chests out after the successful invasion of Grenada in 1983. Since we all knew that a toe-to-toe slugfest against the Ussr would likely result in nuclear armageddon, we had to get our ass-kicking wishes fulfilled at the multiplex. And so Milius...

With its list of new releases for September 2022, Prime Video is finally unveiling the most anticipated (and expensive) series in the streamer’s history.
The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power will arrive to Prime Video’s servers on Sept. 2, 2022. This Lord of the Rings prequel, set in J.R.R. Tolkien’s Second Age, is in many ways the kind of TV property that Prime Video must have always wanted. It’s certainly the TV property most fitting with the company’s largesse and riches. The Rings of Power will cover the creation of the titular rings and many important events from Tolkien’s lore (condensed into a more TV-appropriate timeframe).
Middle-earth is going to be the happening spot on Amazon and the streaming world at large this month, but Prime Video does have a handful of other originals for the fantasy-phobic. Flight/Risk, a documentary about the Boeing 737 Max design disasters,...

The character actor was part of the ensemble casts of Robert Altman’s films Short Cuts and The Player, and had a career in film and television that spanned five decades
The veteran character actor Fred Ward, best known for appearances in The Right Stuff, Tremors and Short Cuts, has died aged 79. A statement to the New York Post by Ward’s representative said that the actor died on 8 May. No cause of death was given, but the statement said it was Ward’s wish for donations to be made to the Boston University Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy Center.
Born in San Diego, Ward joined the air force before deciding to become an actor. Having found it difficult to land roles, he worked as a lumberjack, sailor and boxer before restarting his acting career in Italy, where an early credit was in a 1974 Roberto Rossellini TV movie about Descartes. For its list of new releases of February 2022, HBO Max is bringing back one of its biggest original series.
The Ridley Scott-directed sci-fi epic Raised by Wolves helped launch HBO Max back in 2020 and now it’s finally back for another season. Raised by Wolves season 2 premieres with three episodes on Feb. 3. This season will continue the conflict between future atheists and theists on a remote planet, while two androids raise some kids.
February 2022 also sees the end of another, more recent HBO Max hit. Peacemaker airs its finale on Feb. 17. Thankfully that same day sees the premiere of another exciting original. Dream Raider is a Mandarin-language sci-fi thriller that carries some big Inception vibes.
There aren’t many original movies of note this month, but there are a lot of recent hits coming to HBO Max as library titles. Nightmare Alley arrives on Feb. 1, followed by The Many Saints of Newark on Feb.

The New Beverly Cinema website is well known for cataloguing film reviews written by Quentin Tarantino (the director owns the Los Angeles movie theater), but the “Pulp Fiction” and “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood” director published a rare gem this month in the form of a 1982 interview between himself and fellow writer-director John Milius. The catch is that Tarantino was 20 years old at the time, and he was still 10 years away from making his directorial debut with “Reservoir Dogs.” It shouldn’t come as a surprise to discover that 20-year-old Tarantino acts far older than his age suggests.
Tarantino writes in an introduction to the discussion: “This interview with writer-director John Milius was conducted when I was twenty years old (and boy does it show). The last film he had done at the time was ‘Conan the Barbarian.’ I just called up his assistant and told her I was writing a book,...

The name director Ted Kotcheff may not be as instantly recognisable as some of his filmmaker contemporaries, but a fertile creative period during the 70s and 80s saw him craft a number of well-received films across a variety of genres – The Apprenticeship of Duddy Kravitz (which launched the career of a young, pre-Jaws Richard Dreyfuss), the original Fun with Dick and Jane, North Dallas Forty, Switching Channels and Weekend at Bernie’s.
Arguably, he’s best known for bringing the iconic character of John Rambo into the world with the 1982 ‘Nam-scarred survivalist classic First Blood, but another underappreciated film from his CV is now available on DVD and Blu-ray. 1971’s Wake in Fright was an early addition to the Australian New Wave cinema movement, and remains a vivid and disturbing depiction of the country’s hard-drinking, fiercely masculine subculture of that era. We talked to Kotcheff earlier this month...

Scientists have worked tirelessly since the invention of Blu-ray looking for a way to capture the essence of Chuck Norris onto a high-definition disc. No matter how hard they tried though his fists, jaw and body hair refused to be contained long enough for the transfer to take. But finally, in the year of our Lord 2012, six years after the format’s debut… they’ve succeeded. Seven of Chuck Norris’ classics are now available in HD. Missing In Action (1984) is one of Chuck Norris‘ most popular titles for a few reasons. It was released at the apex of his film career, it has a fairly high body count and it appeals to the patriot in all of us. It also plays to a fantasy as appealing as any revenge thriller… the idea that Americans are still being held prisoner in Vietnam. It wasn’t the best do to so (Uncommon Valor) or the one with the most...

Watching Road House is not quite a guilty pleasure of mine; I'm not ashamed to say that I like it for what it is, something mindless, entertaining and absolutely implausible. Law enforcement doesn't seem to exist in the universe of Road House, which makes me suspect that it takes place a couple of states over from where the action in The Dukes of Hazzard is going down.
Patrick Swayze made a lot of really fun popcorn action movies, like this, Red Dawn, Steel Dawn, Uncommon Valor and Point Break. When judged on paper, all of these flicks would seem like they're going to be B-movie losers. With Swayze, they actually rise higher than anyone could have suspected. If only Hollywood knew the power that Patrick Swayze had to make forgettable action films transmutate into movies that you have to watch when you stumble across them on a rainy Saturday afternoon,...

The vigilante has been a mainstay in film for decades. Classic Hollywood westerns bestowed the lone ranger and the gun for hire with a mythic quality.
Recent films such as The Dark Knight and Taken have shown that the popularity of characters operating outside the confines of law and order remains intact. Last year, however, saw the release of several major films concerning a team of vigilantes, or a “vigilanteam” as I like to call them. The Losers (2010), The Expendables (2010) and The A-Team (2010) all portray a cast of characters who have been wronged and are out to get even. In essence these films are ensemble pieces, giving the audience a variation of characters to root for.
In the case of the new vigilanteams, nostalgia seems to be the buzz word. All three films contain a realism-defying sense of action bombast which recalls over-the-top eighties blockbusters. Furthermore, The Expendables and The A-Team...

AMC has greenlit a full season of the TV series Hell on Wheels, which was written and created by Joe and Tony Gayton. This is the same station that gave us Mad Men and The Walking Dead.
The series tells the epic story of post-Civil War America, focusing on a Confederate soldier who sets out to exact revenge on the Union soldiers who have killed his wife. His journey takes him west to Hell on Wheels, a dangerous, raucous, lawless melting pot of a town that travels with and services the construction of the first transcontinental railroad, an engineering feat unprecedented for its time. The series examines the railroad's institutionalized greed and corruption, the immigrant experience, and the plight of the newly emancipated African-Americans during reconstruction. Over time, Hell on Wheels chronicles this potent turning point in our nation's history, and how uncivilized the business of civilization can be.

The series examines the railroad's institutionalized greed and corruption, the immigrant experience, and the plight of the newly emancipated African-Americans during reconstruction. Over time, Hell on Wheels chronicles this potent turning point in our nation's history, and how uncivilized the business of civilization can be.

Photo: Walt Disney Pictures Jeff Bridges started off the love fest early in the day at the press junket for Tron: Legacy saying, "They brought Steven Lisberger on and I believe that was essential. He was the godfather of the things, he was the source." Lisberger, of course, is the writer, director and co-creator of the original 1982 Tron.
As the day went on, everyone from the actors to Disney Production President Sean Bailey to Tron: Legacy's director Joseph Kosinski spoke enthusiastically of Lisberger's involvement in Disney's tentpole film for Christmas 2010. Quite a comeback for a man whose last film credit was 1989's little seen Slipstream with Bill Paxton. Before that he directed Hot Pursuit with a young up and comer named John Cusack, a film with a budget so low that according to Lisberger,...

Patrick Swayze: 1952-2009
By
Alex Simon
All films buffs have guilty pleasures. You know, those movies that high-minded cineastes love to turn their noses up at, especially critics for The New York Times, people with MFAs in some sort of film-related field, or just plain snobs who refuse to acknowledge anything released on celluloid that doesn’t have English subtitles and at least one reference to death, either as a character or a metaphor (and oftentimes both). Patrick Swayze was the undisputed King of the Guilty Pleasure. From his screen debut in Skatetown, USA in 1979, to his final appearance on television’s "The Beast" as a take-no-prisoners cop, Swayze was an unapologetic good ol’ boy who happened to be a classically-trained dancer, student of martial arts and Eastern philosophy, and possessor of an Iq that was nothing to sneeze at. In fact, he closely resembled Dalton, his character in...

After a public battle with pancreatic cancer, actor Patrick Swayze passed away earlier today.
"Patrick Swayze passed away peacefully today with family at his side after facing the challenges of his illness for the last 20 months," said Annett Wolf, Swayze's publicist in a short statement released to the press. Swayze was married to his wife Lisa Niemi for 34 years.
Swayze got his start back in 1979 starring in the disco comedy Skatetown U.S.A. A trained dancer, he used his athleticism to further his acting jobs. In 1982 he was one of many rising young stars in Francis Ford Coppola's adaptation of The Outsiders. Swayze followed it up with a supporting role in the American war action film Uncommon Valor (1983) and a bigger, more memorable part in John Milius' Red Dawn (1984) playing the older brother of Charlie Sheen's character. After starring in the North & South epic mini-series Swayze...

Bodhi has surfed his last wave, and Dalton has cooled his final brawl. Patrick Swayze has died, losing his struggle with pancreatic cancer. He was 57. The amiable, legendarily handsome actor started out with strong work in the classic The Outsiders, and roles in Red Dawn, Uncommon Valor and Youngblood. While his subsequent career had some ups and downs, those peaks will be seen forever -- Dirty Dancing. Ghost. Road House. Point Break. Swayze worked and fought as long as possible, starring...

With the release of X-Men Origins: Wolverine, the 2009 summer movie season has begun. A cursory glance at the upcoming slate of summer releases looks pretty weak this year, but I’m not here to look ahead. Instead, I noticed that we’ve reached the twenty-year anniversary of the “true” summer movie age. Sure, Jaws and Star Wars were the godfathers of the movement, and the close-following summers since that time often saw two or three big releases looking to cash in on the popcorn-munching crowd, but it was 1989 when the summer movie calendar started to become bloated. The large number of crowd-pleasing titles (and bevy of sequels) included the following: Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade, Batman, Ghostbusters II, License to Kill, Star Trek V, Lethal Weapon 2, The Abyss, Honey I Shrunk the Kids and, to a lesser extent, The Karate Kid: Part III. So on the Platinum Anniversary of the summer flick phenomenon,...
