Exclusive: Nate Silver, the founder of FiveThirtyEight, and Maria Konnikova, the author of The Biggest Bluff, are launching a new weekly podcast about making good decisions — in poker, in politics, and in everyday life.
The pair, who are both journalists who moonlight as high-stakes poker players, are launching Risky Business.
The series, which launches on May 16, comes from Malcolm Gladwell’s Pushkin Industries and iHeartPodcasts.
It comes a year after Silver departed ABC News.
Silver is the founder and former editor-in-chief of political and statistical analysis site FiveThirtyEight, and one of the country’s leading election forecasters. He has over $800,000 in lifetime poker tournament winnings and his forthcoming book, On the Edge, is about gambling and risk.
Konnikova, who has a doctorate in psychology, inadvertently became a professional poker player with over $500,000 in tournament winnings, while researching The Biggest Bluff.
The pair will both be competing at the World Series of Poker this year.

It was a movie with a questionable title. A lot of critics were rough on it. Gene Siskel even called it one of the worst movies of the year. It came and went in theatres with few movie-goers paying any attention. But in the years since its release, it has become a beloved cult classic, with a legion of fans that love quoting its memorable lines. Some of its youngest viewers were drawn in by what they saw as a wish fulfillment concept: What would you do if the babysitter croaked on the first day of your mom’s vacation… so you had the house to yourself for two months straight? We get to see what the Crandall kids would do in the 1991 comedy Don’t Tell Mom the Babysitter’s Dead – and it’s time for this one to be Revisited.

1986's "Top Gun" decidedly propelled Tom Cruise toward stardom, while the actor had already made his mark with "Risky Business" and "The Color of Money," two films that helped underline his dynamic range as a performer before his rise to fame. From this point on, Cruise would go on to star in a string of projects that cemented his superstar status, but like any performer, a few films failed to impress audiences and critics for many reasons. No, I am not talking about the disastrous "The Mummy" — the first and final entry in the doomed Dark Universe — but the lowest-rated Tom Cruise film, at least according to Rotten Tomatoes. I'm talking about Roger Donaldson's 1988 film about making drinks and money: "Cocktail," which currently sports an abysmal 9% on Rotten Tomatoes.
There is good reason for this overwhelmingly negative consensus, as "Cocktail" feels like an unsavory product of its time, what...

Sequels of a successful media franchise can turn out to be risky endeavors as we have witnessed in the past. Many franchises have gone on to make sequels that only ruin their masterpiece of a movie or legacy. The Hollywood star, Tom Cruise is also not a big fan of making sequels with the Mission Impossible franchise being the biggest exception of the star’s career.

Tom Cruise will definitely go down in history as one of the greatest action stars of all time. The American actor is one of the most established stars in the industry and has won multiple accolades including 3 Golden Globe awards throughout his career spanning over four decades.
Cruise is most well known for his portrayal of Agent Ethan Hunt in the Mission Impossible franchise.

Action star Tom Cruise is often regarded as one of the last stars in Hollywood right now. The actor is known for his commitment to the cinematic experience through films such as the Mission Impossible franchise and Top Gun: Maverick. The actor has also delivered amazing dramatic performances in films like Magnolia and Jerry Maguire.
While Cruise is one of the biggest stars in Hollywood, the actor has also faced many struggles in life. The Risky Business star has come under fire for his association with the Church of Scientology and for his failed marriages. The actor has also revealed his childhood struggles with abuse from his father. However, none of that seems to have stopped the ‘savior of cinema’ from being a juggernaut.

The 1983 classic Risky Business is getting the Criterion Collection treatment with an upcoming 4K Uhd and Blu-ray release – and the list of special features reveals that this release will feature both the theatrical cut of the film as well as writer/director Paul Brickman’s director’s cut, which has the original, darker ending. That ending was available as a bonus feature on a previous Blu-ray release of Risky Business, but these Criterion discs will be the first to actually have a full, official “director’s cut” of the film on them.

Tom Cruise has finally entered The Criterion Collection. While technically, “Cocktail” has been available on the Criterion Channel in the past, in announcing its July titles today, Criterion made Cruise’s inclusion with a DVD/Blu-Ray title official today with the addition of 1983’s classic comedy, “Risky Business,” the actor’s breakthrough film. Directed by Paul Brickman, the coming-of-age comedy film, sometimes said to be modeled after a more risqué, “The Graduate,” centers on a Chicago teenager (Cruise) and his sexual exploits while his parents are away on vacation, including spending time with prostitutes.

Cruise. Criterion. Just a matter of time, really, until the world’s premier movie star made his way into the collection. Smart money might not have been on Paul Brickman’s Risky Business, a great film mostly known for one or two sequences but which will now be seen in 4K when released this July, a month that brings 2,160-pixel releases for Pat Garrett and Billy the Kid (featuring an essay from the great novelist Steve Erickson), Perfect Days, Farewell My Concubine, and the stunning-looking Le Samouraï restoration.
Don’t sleep, however, on maybe the best film to get a release in July: Glauber Rocha’s Cinema Novo masterpiece Black God, White Devil, which recently received a 4K restoration that looks so good I envy anybody who saw it for the first time like so.

British actor Nicholas Galitzine is no stranger to pushing boundaries on screen. Whether he’s navigating complex relationships in historical dramas or portraying a rockstar, he always brings a refreshing honesty to his characters, the actor is versed in every way. Recently, he opened up about his upcoming project, The Idea of You, in which he channels Tom Cruise.

Nicholas Galitzine may have told his parents that he has a lot of sex scenes in “Mary & George” with both women and men, but that didn’t keep things from getting awkward when his mom and dad were by his side at the series’ London premiere.
“I was kind of in hysterics because there is nothing more uncomfortable than watching your son bed a number of characters even within the first few episodes,” the British actor, 29, tells me during a wide-ranging conversation on this week’s “Just for Variety” podcast.
“Mary & George” chronicles the real-life story of Mary Villiers (Julianne Moore), a woman in 17th century England who was so hungry for power that she successfully pushed her son George (Galitzine) into becoming lovers with King James (Tony Curran). Created by D.C. Moore, the seven-episode series is based on the non-fiction book “The King’s Assassin: The Fatal...

Controversial while he may be, Tom Cruise is the quintessential movie star. You can love him or hate him, but his on-screen charisma and willingness to go all in for all his roles is what makes him, even now, a considerable box-office draw.
He embodies cinema, and his dedication to pulling out all the stops in whatever he does—whether riding off a cliff on a bike or carrying out an impossible fight sequence on the top of a moving practically-constructed train—evidences his legacy and brand in Hollywood.

But this trait of his isn’t one he cultivated recently. Even before the plethora of Mission: Impossible films showed us Cruise’s knack for committing to the unimaginable, there was one movie, right after Top Gun and The Color of Money, called Cocktail (1988), where the actor’s diligence and tenacity spoke volumes of his character.

Growing up in a less-than-affluent household, it wasn’t until his 20s that Tom Cruise found his footing in Hollywood, thanks to 1983’s Risky Business. However, unlike Conor McGregor, who is said to have made history with his earnings from Doug Liman’s Road House remake, the Legend Star was paid considerably less for his debut role.
But while it was nowhere close to his later salaries, which saw the actor racking in millions, the Oscar-nominated actor used his first salary to perform an invaluable act for his sibling. Tom Cruise Put His Earnings From Risky Business to His Sister’s College Fees

Tom Cruise and the Art of Leaving Us Wanting More Let’s talk about Tom Cruise, shall we? The man’s been sprinting across our screens for decades, leaving a trail of classic films in his wake. And in the age where Hollywood recycles ideas more than a hipster with a compost bin, it’s only natural to wonder: what if some of those classics got a sequel? Joel Goodsen’s Next Risky Venture Remember Risky Business? Of course, you do. It’s the film that made both Ray-Bans and Bob Seger’s ‘Old Time Rock and Roll’ cooler than the other side of the pillow.

Plot details are being kept under wraps.

Warner Bros Discovery CEO David Zaslav and the Motion Picture Group’s co-chairs and CEOs Michael De Luca and Pam Abdy have hammered out a new strategic partnership deal with Tom Cruise that takes effect this year.
The $13 billion-grossing star and producer will develop and produce original and franchise theatrical titles which he’ll star in. Cruise and his production company will have an office on the Burbank, CA lot. The last time Cruise starred in a Warner Bros movie was the 2014 sci-fi action title Edge of Tomorrow ($370.5 million global gross), one of eight titles he made with the studio including Rock of Ages, The Last Samurai, Magnolia, Eyes Wide Shut, Interview with the Vampire, Risky Business and The Outsiders.
Note, this isn’t an exclusive deal, as Cruise will continue to work with Paramount, where he’s shooting Mission: Impossible 8, and Universal, where he’s making the $200M shot-in-space movie directed by Doug Liman.

Tom Cruise has taken a flying leap, though this time not on a motorcycle and off of a cliff. No, Cruise is headed to Burbank as part of a new strategic partnership with Warner Bros. Warner Bros. Motion Picture Group co-chairs and CEOs Michael De Luca and Pam Abdy — and Cruise — announced the partnership on Tuesday. Cruise and his production company will even get offices on the Warner Bros Discovery lot.
Cruise’s deal with Warner Bros. — a return, of sorts — does not make him exclusive to the studio. There are currently no projects in development and it is not a traditional first-look deal; think of this as more of a formal commitment to collaborate with De Luca and Abdy on future blockbusters. Tom Cruise is setting up shop on the Warner Bros. lot.
In a new strategic partnership that Warner Bros. Discovery chief David Zaslav helped shepherd, Cruise will team with movie studio chiefs Michael De Luca and Pamela Abdy in jointly developing and producing original and franchise theatrical films starring the world-famous actor.
Cruise and his production company will have offices on the Wbd lot in Burbank. The pact, which commences this year, isn’t a traditional first-look deal, insiders say.
Luring Cruise into the fold is a coup for Zaslav, Abdy and De Luca, considering he’s one of the last movie stars who carries clout around the world. And it’s especially a coup since he’s otherwise remained a free agent who hasn’t had a formal deal with Paramount, home of his two biggest franchises, Mission: Impossible and Top Gun, since 2006.

This article contains Saltburn spoilers.
It’s strange times when the biggest streaming hit during the past holiday season was neither a family film nor a starry blockbuster filled with A-listers like Daniel Craig and Jennifer Lawrence. Instead the one experience this writer heard about time and again during the extended holiday break was of families gathering around and sharing a good old cringe as Emerald Fennell’s Saltburn played on.
Released briefly in theaters last November (where it barely grossed $20 million worldwide), this even pervier riff on The Talented Mr. Ripley didn’t truly come into its own until distributor MGM put Saltburn on Amazon Prime Video on Dec. 22. Right in time for Christmas. There’s of course plenty for the whole family to enjoy: Barry Keoghan dancing nude and free around a mansion like Gen Z’s own twisted version of Risky Business; the same actor getting intimate...

NCIS fans are familiar with Mark Harmon as Leroy Jethro Gibbs. He joined the NCIS team in 2003 — and years before that, fans knew him for his dashing good looks. Harmon was named People’s Sexiest Man Alive in 1986, and he had no trouble attracting women. While speaking to the publication, he discussed his brief hookup with star Heather Locklear.
‘NCIS’ star Mark Harmon once said his brief hookup with Heather Locklear wasn’t special
Mark Harmon is known for his time as Leroy Jethro Gibbs in NCIS, but true fans of the actor know he was once crowned the Sexiest Man Alive by People. Harmon made viewers swoon after first starring as Dr. Robert Caldwell in St. Elsewhere. His co-star, Cristina Pickles, who played nurse Helen Rosenthal in St. Elsewhere, commented on how women reacted to seeing Harmon.

After Risky Business, Tom Cruise was catapulted into the spotlight. Sure, there was Taps and The Outsiders, but once he slid across the floor in his skivvies, he was it. And he could choose any project he wanted, including a picture with David Lynch. As it turns out, Tom Cruise was in contention for the role of Paul Atreides in 1984’s Dune but couldn’t quite grasp Frank Herbert’s language.
As detailed in Max Evry’s oral history A Masterpiece in Disarray: David Lynch’s Dune, Tom Cruise could have led the sci-fi flop instead of, you know, headlining Top Gun and shooting pool with Paul Newman. According to Everett McGill, who played Fremen leader Stilgar, “I have a faint recollection that Tom Cruise had some difficulty with the language during his screen test.” Sean Young, who played Chani, delivered an odd cheapshot, saying, “Maybe they hadn’t gotten...

The power and popularity of Phil Collins’ “In the Air Tonight,” which first famously appeared on TV in Season 1 of Michael Mann’s Miami Vice, has outlasted 30 years of screen appearances in everything from Risky Business to a Cadbury chocolate bar ad to a fictional Mike Tyson’s affinity for the tune in the original Hangover. Now, it’s been reinvented as the theme song for one of TV’s most popular shows.
ESPN said today that Monday Night Football will utilize a version of the song that combines the talents of Chris Stapleton, Snoop Dogg and Cindy Blackman Santana. The first clip of the collaboration was released via a new music video open that will be played before every game.

It’s been a long, sexless decade or two for American cinema, but this summer, we’re finally getting films about laughs and lust again.
The 2023 Summer film season has been bookended by two comedies about women desperate for sex, albeit for very different reasons. “No Hard Feelings,” starring Jennifer Lawrence as a woman who reluctantly accepts a Craigslist job to “date” the son of a rich couple in exchange for a car, arrived in June. Closing out August comes the theatrical release of South by Southwest premiere “Bottoms,” directed by “Shiva Baby” filmmaker Emma Seligman and starring Rachel Sennott and Ayo Edebiri as two horny, unpopular lesbian teenagers who start a “female self-defense program” (read: fight club) in a bid to impress their cheerleader crushes.
Both films have been well-received by critics and audiences alike; “No Hard Feelings” made a healthy amount of money with $86.7 million at the global box office,...

1990’s Days of Thunder was the end of an era for Tom Cruise. It would be the last movie he’d make as part of his “youth” phase, which began with Risky Business. At the time, he was best known as the cocky young hot shot, but when this movie underperformed at the box office, Cruise took some time off and returned as a more seasoned leading man, with 1992’s A Few Good Men kicking off an unprecedented streak of hits. While Days of Thunder has a valued place in Tom Cruise’s filmography and remains a popular title, when it came out, the movie was considered such a disappointment that the movie’s two producers, Don Simpson and Jerry Bruckkeimer’s deal with Paramount Pictures came to a fractious end. So what happened?
“Top Gun on Wheels” – that’s what everyone called Days of Thunder in the summer of 1990. The studio.

The ’80s was a decade of movies that you can hear at a roar even on mute. A screenshot of Tom Cruise and Rebecca De Mornay aboard the train in “Risky Business” has a sound to it. The same goes for a still image of Kaneda riding towards Neo-Tokyo in “Akira,” or Jack Nicholson’s car snaking its way up the mountains towards the Overlook Hotel during the opening titles of “The Shining.”
It was a decade of synths and sad jazz; a decade of legends reaching the height of their powers (e.g. John Williams and Ennio Morricone), and of newcomers from other disciplines becoming cinematic virtuosos in their own right (e.g. Ryuichi Sakamoto and Philip Glass). The movies had never sounded that way before, but the best film scores of the ’80s — our picks are listed below — continue to echo in our minds as if they’ve always been there.

Two personal, stylish, and distinctive films celebrate major birthdays this month: “Risky Business” turned 40 August 5 and August 1 marked the 50th anniversary of the release of “American Graffiti.”
Two other personal, stylish, and distinctive films also celebrate their blockbuster success this August: “Barbie,” which is now $1 billion worldwide and counting, and “Oppenheimer,” which just crossed $600 million.
August is generally known for providing the dog days of summer box office. It’s the end of the road, kids are going back to school. There’s no time for a blockbuster to stretch its legs and no one’s in the mood for anything weighty. The current studio release calendar bears out that logic with “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem,” “The Last Voyage of the Demeter,” “Gran Turismo,” “Blue Beetle,” and “Strays.”

Chloe Domont’s “Fair Play” sparked one of the few bidding wars at this year’s Sundance Film Festival, and Netflix has dropped the first trailer for all to see. At a festival where even seemingly surefire titles like “Cat Person” went without a buyer, “Fair Play” was snagged f0r $20 million from Netflix. That’s shy of the record $25 million that Apple paid for eventual Best Picture Oscar winner “Coda,” but who’s counting?

In 1983, audiences watched Tom Cruise dance in his parents’ living room in Paul Brickman’s adolescent drama “Risky Business.” The film became a cultural touchstone — with Cruise’s dance often imitated but never duplicated — that has endured for 40 years. Cruise took that success and has now become the biggest, if not the last, global movie star. But when this author watches “Risky Business,” it’s the story of Lana, the teenage sex worker who propels Cruise’s Joel on his quest towards running a brothel, that sticks out.
Actress Rebecca De Mornay was in her early twenties when she made “Risky Business” and has never truly gotten her flowers for it. It’s even more frustrating to consider that the actress went on to star in hits in her own right, including the 1992 thriller “The Hand That Rocks the Cradle” and Disney’s 1993 adaptation of “The Three Musketeers.” De Mornay...

In February, a clip went viral of Steven Spielberg telling Tom Cruise at an Oscars luncheon that he “saved Hollywood’s ass.” Spielberg was referring to the explosive success of Cruise’s return to the pilot seat in “Top Gun: Maverick.” Released in May 2022, the long-awaited sequel was the top earner at the domestic box office last year, raking in over $700 million in the United States. It was the shot in the arm that cinemas needed after the pandemic, and proof positive of Cruise’s enduring appeal as both a marquee movie star and skilled actor — two bona fides not always packaged together so successfully.
Cruise has been leveraging looks and charm, and flexing his blockbuster muscles, for decades. Going all the way back to the early 1980s, his appeal never seems to age, even at 61 years old. He’s skillfully shepherded original movies as a star and producer, never...

It’s Tom Cruise’s birthday today, and Paramount is celebrating the star’s birthday in style. If there’s anything the now 61-year-old star is known for, it’s his distinctive on-screen run. With a film career that spans over four decades, Tom Cruise is arguably the biggest movie star of this generation. Cruise is associated with so many iconic film moments — the dance in “Risky Business,” the “need for speed” chant in “Top Gun,” and “Show me the money!” in “Jerry Maguire,” among many others — that it seems like he’s been a movie star forever.
He has been a critical darling through parts of his career but has mainly focused on blockbusters (acclaimed or not). He has received two Oscar nominations for Best Actor in “Born on the Fourth of July” (1989) and “Jerry Maguire” (1996) plus another as Best Supporting Actor in “Magnolia” (1999). Those are the three performances that provided him with Golden Globe wins. His other four nominations with the Hollywood Foreign Press were for “Risky Business” (1983), “A Few Good Men” (1992), “The Last Samurai” (2003) and “Tropic Thunder” (2008). Many of these roles...

Jennifer Lawrence is hilarious. Sure, she made her name as an actor in dead-serious indie dramas (The Burning Plain, Winter’s Bone), franchise tent poles (The Hunger Games trilogy, those X-Men 2.0 blockbusters), the kind of nerve-shredding films that fall somewhere between horror and thriller (House at the End of the Street, Passengers), and whatever category you care to slot Mother! into. Filmmaker David O. Russell figured out early on that Lawrence was a perfect fit for his skewed, neurotic dramedies, and it’s impossible to think that Silver Linings Playbook and...

Last weekend was a critical test of the summer box office, with results more negative than positive. This weekend has the opportunity to change that course.
This late June weekend is normally a high point. The last five years pre-pandemic, it saw an average gross of around $200 million (and at lower ticket prices). This year it may struggle to reach $120 million, once unheard of for any weekend between May and mid-August.
“No Hard Feelings,” a $48 million R-rated comedy from Sony with producer Jennifer Lawrence starring as a woman hired to help a shy and inexperienced 19-year-old gain confidence, will be a four-prong test: an original non-franchise film, a female lead, a comedy, and rated R. Should it perform, it could expand standard production assumptions.
This weekend will also see the expansion of two specialized films. Wider response to Wes Anderson’s “Asteroid City” (Focus) and first-time filmmaker Celine Song’s...

Take those old records off the shelf because Risky Business is turning 40 this year. And not only is Tom Cruise – who played high schooler Joel Goodsen, who gets mixed up with a prostitute and her pimp – amazed by that, but he admits that he still dances around the house in his underwear as he famously did in Risky Business.
At the premiere of Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One, Tom Cruise remembered where so much of his fame began, calling working on 1983’s Risky Business a “formative” experience. “He gave me the opening frame of that shot and he goes, ‘I want to start here, I want to move here,’ and he and I – Paul Brickman, great filmmaker – he and I talked about it, he said, ‘Here’s the choreography.’ Look, I grew up dancing in my underwear in my house, who didn’t? So I was like, I got this!

Tom Cruise is no stranger to doing his own stunts. Whether he’s scaling the tallest building in the world or clinging to the side of military planes or holding his breath for six minutes, he remains one of the most impressive talents in Hollywood. And while we know these are dangerous acts, we don’t often think that he could die doing any of it – come on, this is Tom Cruise! But that’s not necessarily the feeling when you’re watching it go down on the set.
Speaking with Deadline at the Rome premiere of Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One, Simon Pegg – who has been playing Imf techy Benji Dunn since 2006’s Mission: Impossible III – said there is genuine concern over if Tom Cruise will even survive his stunts. “There’s always a sense that, you know, one day, something might go wrong we might lose Tom,...

Gather ’round, kids, and let’s tell a tale of a time long ago, when movie screens weren’t filled with just superheroes and special effects. A time when parents policed what you were watching for fear of an awkward conversation.
We’re referring, of course, to sex.
From “Basic Instinct” and “Eyes Wide Shut” to “Body Double,” “Risky Business” and “9 ½ Weeks,” on-screen nookie was once a staple of cinema, as much a part of the moviegoing experience as buttered popcorn.
But Hollywood has been strangely celibate for at least the last decade.
