Welcome to the latest instalment of a brand-new feature here on Nerdly, where one of our comic gurus, Ian Wells, delves into comics history and dissects Comics Interview, the long-running journal of interviews and criticism from David Anthony Kraft (Dak).
Up Front
In the Up Front this month Dak comes up with the idea of doing an opinion poll for Comics Interview. This doesn’t feel like a conventional opinion poll as Dak doesn’t set any specific questions. Instead, he is looking for readers to tell him what have been their favourite interviews and who they would like to be interviewed. The replies will play out in the letters pages so that might see me shine more of a spotlight there in the coming months. In the last few months, the Up Front has dropped off, not really offering much to the magazine.

If, as Blanche Dubois once said, “The opposite of death is desire,” then Luca Guadagnino will live forever, and his latest film — a transcendently sweaty tennis love triangle so turned on by the heat of competition that its sex scenes feel like foreplay and its rallies feel like porn — is possibly the most unbridled portrait of resurrection since “The Passion of the Christ.”

Animation and fantasy go hand in hand. In the 80s, there was a boom of fantasy epics in the land of cartoons that had nothing to do with the House of Mouse and everything to do with adult content. This was helped along from the previous decade by creator Ralph Bakshi, who had started things off with Fritz the Cat and would be the first to do a feature-length version of Lord of The Rings with his animated film and the trippy flick Wizards (and later – the cult film Cool World).
During our fave decade, Anime would find a welcoming home in the US with several classics that would be released during that time. Canada would also get into the mix with Heavy Metal (which we’ll get to.) But Ralph Bakshi decided to join forces with one of the biggest names in fantasy art for a new entry into...

DC Comics' "Fire and Ice: Welcome to Smallville", available November 2023, is written by Joanne Starer and illustrated by Natacha Bustos. with covers by Terry Dodson and Rachel Dodson:
"...things could not possibly be worse for 'Fire and Ice'. 'Superman' sent the former 'Justice Leaguers' packing for 'Smallville' following an extremely public and utterly disastrous mission, that was all the fault of 'Guy Gardner' and in doing so doomed them to a fate worse than death: irrelevance.
"Now 'Ice' finds herself drawn to the quiet life and dreams of planting roots. But 'Fire'…well, Fire will do just about anything to get the heck outta Dodge and back on the hero circuit—including challenging the Dcu’s biggest villains to a knock-down, drag-out, live-streamed brawl in the streets of Smallville..."

The Spine of Night Directors on Horror Fiction Inspirations and the Freedom of Independent Animation
Philip Gelatt and Morgan Galen King’s The Spine of Night is an impassioned tribute to adult animation, dark fantasy, and truly ambitious genre epics of the type all too rarely seen on the silver screen.
“One thing is certain about The Spine of Night: this is a labor of bone-shattered, triptacular love, “I said in my review. “The new rotoscope-animated feature—a clearly adoring homage to Ralph Bakshi, Heavy Metal, and 1980s dark fantasy—was created over a span of seven years by a minuscule team of animators digitally painting frame-by-frame with the oversight of directors Philip Gelatt and Morgan Galen King. It’s a deathly earnest film––like George Lucas-caliber earnest––guts-filled with capital-l lore, grim violence, artful nudity, and portentous monologues––not-always-convincingly delivered by a vocal cast that includes Lucy Lawless and Patton Oswalt––that never dare consciously wink at the intrinsic camp of its culty-retro throwback venue.

Last week, the filmmaking duo of Philip Gelat and Morgan Galen King celebrated the world premiere at SXSW 2021 of their epic animated feature The Spine of Night, which immerses viewers in a brutal world filled with magic, monsters, and men who are hellbent on abusing the powers of nature for their own personal gain. Evoking the classic animated works of Heavy Metal and Ralph Bakshi’s The Lord of the Rings, The Spine of Night feels exactly like the type of film you’d watch late at night with a group of friends after playing D&d and you just needed one more hit of fantasy world-building to cap off the whole evening.
Daily Dead recently had the opportunity to speak with both King and Gelatt about the long road they traveled together while making The Spine of Night, why rotoscoping animation was the only style they ever entertained while making this film,...

American Gods is beginning to hit a fever pitch with its upcoming episode, and we have an exclusive clip to whet your appetite.
Shadow has had a lot thrown at him since he got out of prison.
He discovered his dead wife was having an affair with his best friend, and when you look back at it, that was probably the best news he got as it has snowballed since then.
At the time, Shadow had no idea that his father, the god Odin, trapped on these shores for milennia, murdered Laura Moon, hoping to grow closer to Shadow as he began his preparation for war.
Since then, Shadow has suffered greatly without having any idea why and eventually learned that Wednesday, or Odin, is his father, making him a demi-god. He's still trying to process that on American Gods Season 3.

In one of the first big deals of the upcoming SXSW Film Festival, emerging genre sales company Yellow Veil Pictures has acquired the global sales rights for the animated fantasy “The Spine of Night.”
Directed by Philip Gelatt and Morgan Galen King, the film is set to have its world premiere in the SXSW Midnighters section of the festival, which runs virtually from March 16–20. The cast includes Richard E. Grant (“Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker”), Lucy Lawless (“Ash Vs. Evil Dead”), Patton Oswalt (“A.P. Bio”), Betty Gabriel (“Get Out”), and Joe Manganiello (“Magic Mike Xxl”), and featuring Abby Savage (“Orange Is the New Black”), Larry Fessenden (“The Dead Don’t Die”), and Rob McClure (Broadway’s “Beetlejuice”).
Described as an ultra-violent, epic fantasy, “The Spine of Night” was hand-rotoscoped in the style of cult classic animator Ralph Bakshi and designed to evoke the style of formative fantasy artist Frank Frazetta.

Looking to fill that Game of Thrones void before the final season premieres in 2019? Well, you’re in luck. While waiting to see what’s in store for Jon Snow and the gang, George R.R. Martin, the man behind the books on which the HBO show is based, will release Fire and Blood on November 20.
The forthcoming book won’t be a continuation of the books stemming from A Song of Ice and Fire. Considering prequels continue to be a hot commodity right now, Fire and Blood will take place three-hundred years before the events of Fire and Ice. The book will be the first of two planned volumes and is the definitive history of the Targaryens in Westeros and chronicles the conquest that united the Seven Kingdoms under Targaryen rule through the Dance of the Dragons: the Targaryen civil war that nearly ended their dynasty forever.

Besides the recent rumors that it plans to follow last year’s instant sellout, the Nes Classic Mini, with one modeled after the Snes, April saw the Big N unveil the 2Ds Xl to the surprise of, well, everybody. That streak doesn’t appear to be ending anytime soon, either, as a new Pokemon Direct presentation has been penciled in for June 6.
The unexpected announcement, which you can see in its entirety here, gives absolutely nothing away in regards to what audiences can expect to see when the show kicks off, but we at least don’t have long to wait in order to find out. For those with an open schedule tomorrow, Nintendo says the broadcast is due to begin at 7 am Pst/3 pm BST/10 am Est and will run for eight whole minutes.

Back in my day, movie studios weren't afraid to inject a little fear into the hearts and minds of young viewers with films like The Secret Of Nihm, Watership Down, Fire And Ice, and The Last Unicorn. These days, youngsters are getting little more than mind-numbing fodder with animations like Dreamwork's Boss Baby, The Emoji Movie (eye roll), and Norm Of The North. In the interest of being fair... I waited all episode for the song and I was disappointed.
Despite the title, "Fire and Ice" did not play during this hour.
Nonetheless, Nashville Season 5 Episode 11 got a lot of action.
Deacon continues to struggle with Rayna's death, Juliette tries to guide Maddie and Scarlett searches for her new role.
To start off, Deacon doesn't want release the album. He doesn't have much motivation to finish it though.
Instead, he's just crying a lot and watching old home made videos.
He misses Rayna so much. He clearly doesn't know who he is without her.
We all write about heart break for a living and now that it's staring us in the face, it's like we're afraid of it. We judge it like it's strange or weird. This man just lost the love of his life. How's he supposed to act? We need to be there for him, not ask things of him.

Shia Labeouf has taken on many diverse roles in his rather curious career, but now he gets to channel his inner tennis player as John McEnroe in the upcoming tennis drama Borg/McEnroe. Is it going to be a major stretch for Labeouf to play a famous narcissist with a volatile temper? Probably not.
The first photos from Borg/McEnroe hit the web today, courtesy of a few different Twitter pages, and though they don’t tell us much about what to expect from it, we can at least say that Labeouf looks like the spitting image of McEnroe, though the fabulous 80s hair certainly helps the illusion along.

Thankfully, the Big N is taking pity on the fans, and has slowly been releasing new content for the upcoming title. Last week, a pair of bite-sized clips were shown off, the first of which draws attention to the the Cryonis Rune, one of many Runes that Link can take advantage of in-game. The second featured a handful of Link’s weapons, including a Woodcutter’s axe and the Fire Rod.

I saw The Black Dahlia the day it opened in the fall of 2006. I can safely say it was one of my favorite moviegoing experiences. My husband and I saw it at AMC River East 21, which is one of Chicago’s largest multiplexes. The showing we went to was sold-out. There must have been 400 people there. The movie started, everyone was quiet and seemed excited for the celeb-packed whodunit we were about to see. Slowly, muffled giggles could be heard from different points of the theatre, mostly whenever Aaron Eckhart or Josh Hartnett mumbled “Fire and Ice.” By the middle of the movie, people were openly laughing at Hartnett’s silly, serious narration. Everyone went ballistic when, referring to the resemblance between Hilary Swank and Black Dahlia Elizabeth Short, Scarlett Johansson yells, “She looks like that dead girl!” We went even more ballistic when a woman sitting near me in the audience screamed,...

Winter has come and it's affecting more than just the realm. The creators of the hit HBO show have divulged that the show won't premiere in its regular month.
Let it be known that the best way to get information out of Game of Thrones show creators, David Benioff and D.B. Weiss is to put them on a Ufc podcast. In a recent episode, hosted by Jim Norton and Matt Serra, the duo revealed that Season 7 (and likely Season 8) won't be starting during its normal April premiere date.
The reason behind the move is simple, Winter Has Come.
"We don't have an air date yet, but next year will probably be a little bit later. We're starting a little bit later because, you know, the end of the season 'Winter is here,' and that means sunny weather doesn't really serve our purposes anymore. So we kind of pushed everything...

Gotham’s second season finale brings all that came before together in a fun and exciting hour that sets off a new chain of events that are certain to make the upcoming season as much of a thrill ride as this season has been, if not more so.
Gordon’s heroic journey has been filled with despair and tragedy, which has been mostly his own doing. This season Gordon has been corrupted by Gotham City so much so that he has crossed the line from hero to straight out murderer. While Gordon’s path has been dark it has been an interesting one, of a man who has lost himself in trying to find justice in a system where it seemed impossible. Less than 15 years after its U.S. theatrical release, Christopher Nolan's Memento is already being eyed for a remake. The film's remake rights were acquired when Exclusive Media Group's extensive film library was sold to Ambi Pictures in September, and among Ambi's first orders of business is to remake Nolan's Oscar-nominated, mind-bending thriller, Variety reports.
"Memento has been consistently ranked as one of the best films of its decade," Ambi chief investor Andrea Iervolino said in a statement. "People who've seen Memento 10 times still feel they need to see it one more time.

What, you didn't know Catherine Zeta-Jones covered "Hit Me With Your Best Shot"? Oscar winner Catherine Zeta-Jones turns 46 today, but we should really be celebrating her for another reason: that time she did her damn best to make "Rock of Ages" fun with a cover of "Hit Me With Your Best Shot." The year was 2012. We thought we were getting the Czj comeback we desperately deserved. But no. "Rock of Ages" was lame, and no one appreciated the "Chicago" actress' performance as an '80s-era, Tipper Gore-type objector to popular music. Below, you see why that is a crime. Happy birthday, Czj. George R.R. Martin is a self-proclaimed “old — Very old — Marvel fanboy" and was even once a member of the Merry Marvel Marching Society. A superhero movie needs a fair share of smashing and bashing and stuff blowing up, of course, but Imnsho that stuff works best when it...

One way of telling the history of photographic arts is to describe a linear progression of more and more realistic picture-making, as if painter's brushes and pencils aimed mainly to approximate the human eye until, finally, photography emerged. (This is the premise André Bazin famously explored in “The Ontology of the Photographic Image.”) Given photography's automatic reproduction, painting could move on to express more boldly, more experimentally, more abstractly. Realism was no longer necessary. Incidentally, a lot of the most visible and most discussed uses of CGI and SFX in contemporary cinema have embodied images, actions, and temporalities that are far from realistic. These digital platforms enable visions of worlds that alter our own sufficiently so as to provide something—escape? Improvement? Color? It doesn't ultimately matter. The point is that the pixel has often been directed towards ends that seem to go against photography (and cinematography's) automatic capture of the world.
