This was the first dramatic TV series made by the Home Box Office (HBO) cable TV network and the first to include nudity.
Nicholas Campbell appeared as the Hitchhiker in the initial trilogy of "tryout" episodes, which originally aired in late 1983. After HBO picked up the TV series for a full second season, Campbell was unavailable to reprise his role, so Page Fletcher took over the role from that point on. For its reruns, all of Campbell's scenes were replaced with re-shot footage of Fletcher. Even on the Canadian Season 1 DVD release of the TV series, a "Fletcher" version of an original Campbell episode was released by mistake.
The TV series' episodes were usually shot in five days during its original run on HBO.
Sonja Smits, who played the gender change patient Nina in "Face To Face", appears sans manly makeup in "Murderous Feelings".
Page Fletcher usually only worked one day a week and his wrap-around host segments were often shot in half an hour.
