It is one of the apparent paradoxes that while Duryodhan is blamed for triggering the Mahabharata, in the real sense all the fathers after Duryodhan and even around Duryodhan are blind towards the love they have for their sons, and they are in most of the cases oblivious to its repercussions. Hindi cinema has celebrated this relationship which is catalyzed on blindness since eons. We all are Dhritrastras in actuality.
But Jailer seems to have made the argument stand on its head, and it is one of the primary reasons, inspite of the usual kitsch that it has been packed with that it has achieved the phenomenal success. Here is a father, who comes out of retirement to save his son, a modern Dhritarashtra, but when he finds that the son is recalcitrant and has erred on the wrong side of law, he gives him a long rope, but when...

Amitabh Bachchan's journey of five decades to become the Bollywood "Shahenshah" was not always a smooth ride. Indeed, his life is nothing short of brilliant biopic material. Early rejections were followed by a phase when he made his mark as a promising actor, which was soon overshadowed by the kind of superstardom Bollywood never saw before or after. When the superstar tried his hand at film entrepreneurship, he went bankrupt, only to bounce back and claim supremacy as a super brand and respectability as an icon.
The first reaction of the industry all those years ago, however, was far from welcoming. His tall and lanky frame, and the baritone of his voice, were deemed unsuitable for Bollywood's image of a perfect hero back then. These factors were pointed out as flaws, and reasons why he wouldn't be able to make it big in the industry.

Mubi's retrospective Melancholy & Deadpan: The Films of Martín Rejtman is showing September – November, 2019.The Magic Gloves“I can’t go on. I’ll go on,” Samuel Beckett wrote in The Unnamable. A similar motto underlines the sly, darkly humorous films of the Argentine filmmaker Martín Rejtman. In an interview with Film Comment, after the premiere of his film, The Magic Gloves (2003), at the Locarno Film Festival, Rejtman commented on the stupendous amounts of anti-depressives that his characters take in the movie: “It’s a way of showing how in life you go on, and things don’t affect you so much, and you still go on, and you still go on.” Asked whether his characters are depressed, Rejtman noted that a personal echo of his father’s manic-depressive illness might, in a small way, tinge his films. The depression is certainly a recurring theme; it re-appears in Rejtman’s latest short,...

Writers around the globe are acknowledged to be the key for a movie's success but it is pathetic that Bollywood has always given them a step motherly treatment. However the writers' pair, who changed the trend and demanded remunerations at par with stars, are unarguably the only star writer duo Salim Javed, who penned hit movies like Sholay, Deewaar, Zanjeer, Don, Trishul, Shakti, Mr. India etc.

Their act was based on a particular scene from Hindi mythology ‘Ramayan’ where judge Remo played the role of Raavan who was trying to kidnap Sitaji (played by Lauren) and the old vulture Jatayu who tried to save Sitaji was played by Salman. Their song reflected the religious theme of their act. It truly was a spell binding performance and it gave the audience a clear reflection as to what todays acts would be like.
It was then time to welcome the special guests on stage who would form the Teen Ka Tadka. Sana Saeed, Faisal, Dadi from Comedy Nights with Kapil, Krystle D’Souza, Mukti Mohan and Ellie Avram were all welcomed on stage.

Legendary director, Ramesh Sippy is going back to the floor with a cool new film that what we hear is a quirky romance. Titled Shimla Mirchi, the film has a very interesting cast that includes one of his favorite heroines.
Ramesh Sippy’s cult classic Sholay was released 39 years ago in 1975. In that film, he created the character of Basanti with his favourite actress Hema Malini. Now, after almost 4 decades, the duo will be working together once again in Shimla Mirchi.
Ramesh Sippy always chose to make diverse films right through his career with many blockbusters to his name. To begin with the mature love story Andaz, to the comedy Seeta aur Geeta, to an action adventure Sholay, to the slick action Shaan to the family drama with Shakti to the romantic love story Saagar. Like many of his films, this new project will follow the path of titles beginning with S.

We are back with another look at what happened on Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa! This week’s show opened with the international judge Maksim Chmerkovskiy dancing to the song ‘Criminal’ from Ra One. The audience really loved his performance, as it was the first time Maksim had danced solo on the show.
Host Ranvir, then tricked the contestants into a “pass the parcel” game, by throwing them a mirror ball and saying that whoever caught the ball, would go directly into the face-off. But judge Karan Johar used his “jhoothameter” and said that Ranvir was fooling around, the mirror ball would say who was safe from the eliminations.
This week’s theme was Made in India which meant the contestants would be performing on dance styles that originated from India.
Actor Ashish Sharma & his choreographer Shampa were the first to perform. They danced on the song ‘Har Kisi Ko Nahin Milta’ from the film Boss.

Dilip Kumar and Amitabh Bachchan on the silver screen yet made an artistically superlative film. Glamsham.Com wishes birthday greetin...

Unarguably one of Indian cinema's greatest films, Sholay which released in 1975 is all set for a new release in the 3D format. Producer Jayantilal Gada is responsible for taking Sholay to a new level. But without the director's consent. The technological conversion has not gone down well with this monumental film's director Ramesh Sippy who has not only decided to dissociate himself completely from the project but also opted to take the producers of Sholay 3D to court. Speaking for the first time on the issue, the soft spoken Ramesh Sippy said, "My logic for taking the matter to court is very simple. No one asked me before converting my film to a new format. No one took me into confidence. There was no attempt to contact me. I read about it in the papers. I had no choice but to go to court." Mr. Sippy says he has no...

From its opening montage of a young rustic girl watching her callous husband bring home another wife, to the dying moments when the woman, now in her twilight years, is taken away to the relative comfort of her foster-son’s home as the festivities of Durga Puja break out on the streets of Kolkata… Amar Prem is a glorious homage to that favourite Bollywood archetype: the golden-hearted prostitute.

Indian cinema's most venerated actor Dilip Kumar had a health scare on Sunday evening when he complained of chest pain and was rushed to the Lilavati hospital. However, on Monday morning he was stable and out of danger
Family-friend journalist Udaya Tara Nayar ruled out the rumour of a heart attack. "Yusuf Saab complained of chest pain on Sunday. And he also had high fever. Rather than risk any further health problem, Sairaji decided to take him to hospital where he is now in a stable condition."
Tara claims the actor's hospitalization was more cautionary than anything else. "It's Ganesh Mahotsav time and the family didn't want to take any risks with Yusuf Saab's health. God forbid, if there was a medical emergency and the traffic during the festivity would have made it impossible to reach the hospital. Yusuf Saab has had a heart surgery 14 years ago. No one wants to risk any untoward incident.

“We actors are completely oblivious of ourselves and our surroundings while we perform and even when we watch our work in the rushes shown to us, our senses and vision are trained to detect shortcomings more than accomplishments. That’s the only way we know to improve and render performances that come close to our own satisfaction. And it is always the audience who have the absolute right to acclaim or reject our work, however hard we may have worked to achieve perfection and excellence.” – Dilip Kumar in a letter to Amitabh Bachchan on 14 December 2011

That Amitabh Bachchan's 70th birthday bash was a gala affair is we all know but what made it special was the presence of the several co-stars of his movies over the years. Finally, after years of abstinence from what he was born to do, Ramesh Sippy is all set to return to direction. For the fans of Sippy's timeless cinema-and we refer not just to the pioneering Sholay but also to the equally powerful Shakti, Saagar, Seeta Aur Geeta and Andaz - the return of the maestro to movie-making is a significant sign of the changing time in Bollywood where the giants had lost the will and the way to create landmarks. Says Sippy, "I am aware I haven't directed a film for many years. But, I saw no reason to jump into it just because of a time lapse. I've made films out of very powerful scripts in the past. Then I directed Zamana Deewana in 1995, which was not that strong in content. Then I decided if I found no script worth shooting, I won't direct another film if I didn't get the right script.
