Near the end of Aristotle Torres’ assured feature debut “Story Ave,” a title card comes up on the screen, noting the film is “by The Bronx.” It’s a short moment, leading into the end credits, but it nevertheless speaks volumes to the textured approach that Torres gives to a film that, at least in its outline form, could feel cliché. A narrative about a gifted young artist Kadir (Asante Blackk), who falls into a gang as a result of buried trauma revolving around this family, only to be pulled out by a kind, lonely, older man Luis (Luis Guzmán) might have the surface trappings of a move-of-the-week, but Torres brings out enough stylistic flourishes and lived-in performances to elevate “Story Ave” into being one of the undersung movies of the year so far.

Rancid have announced their first album in six years. The veteran punk band’s 10th studio LP, Tomorrow Never Comes, arrives on June 2nd, and features the just-released title track as its first single.
Tomorrow Never Comes follows 2017’s Trouble Maker. Like that album, the new LP was produced by Epitaph Records owner and Bad Religion guitarist Brett Gurewitz.
The single “Tomorrow Never Comes” features a three-vocal attack, with Tim Armstrong handling the verses, Lars Frederiksen taking on the main chorus, and bassist Matt Freeman belting “tomorrow” in a call-and-response extension of the chorus.
Prior to the album’s release, Rancid will headline the Punk Rock Bowling & Music Festival in Las Vegas on May 28th. After that, they’ll embark on a European/UK tour that kicks off on the album’s release date (June 2nd) in Rimini, Italy, and wraps up June 25th in Tabor, Czech Republic, at the Mighty Sounds Festival.

Pam Grier has lived an incredible life. Her autobiography, "Foxy: A Life in Three Acts" is hopefully going to be turned into a biopic that can finally celebrate her trailblazing career. An entire generation of fans know her as the titular character in "Jackie Brown," Tarantino's follow-up to "Pulp Fiction," based on the crime novel "Rum Punch" by Elmore Leonard. Decades before that, Grier became widely known as the first female action star playing street-savvy, no-nonsense characters in "Coffy" (She'll cream you!), "Foxy Brown", and the more comedic mystery "Friday Foster."
An undeniable acting force and sought-after sex symbol, it was only a matter of time before more challenging, high-profile roles started to come Grier's way. After essentially owning the 1970s, Grier started off the '80s taking on more character-driven parts, like in the boxing drama "Tough Enough" starring Dennis Quaid, and the classic police procedural "Fort Apache the Bronx" starring Paul Newman.

Born in New York, Shapiro spent summers during his teenage years as a lifeguard at the Tamiment Resort in the Poconos, where he met performers like Dick Shawn, Pat Carroll and Carol Burnett, singer Barbara Cook, and choreographer Herb Ross. That’s when he also got to know talent agents.

We’re officially into spooky season, as everyone attempts to divert their attention away from the constant horror show that is 2020 and focus on celebrating Halloween, and there’s no shortage of content on the way to a streaming service near you to make up for the fact that the genre is offering very little on the big screen after several hotly-anticipated titles packed up and fled to 2021.
The Haunting of Bly Manor might be the biggest hitter in Netflix’s arsenal when it comes to movies and TV shows guaranteed to terrify subscribers, but yesterday brought the release of horror comedy Vampires vs. The Bronx. The title is pretty self-explanatory, as the pic follows a group of local kids forced to protect their neighborhood from an invasion of undead bloodsuckers.

Ever wonder what effect a crosstown might have on vampires? Netflix’s upcoming horror comedy is an educational look at an urban problem. There’s a lot of things happening in the neighborhood right now. Keep your eyes open. That may sound vague, but the new Vampires vs. the Bronx trailer is about a silent threat: gentrification. And it’s not just any old white people buying up property in the Boogie Down Bronx; it’s ancient old people who stay that way by sucking the blood out of locals while draining the community of anything special. Have you noticed those missing kids’ posters?
Vampires vs. the Bronx comes from Dominican Republic-raised director Oz Rodriguez, who has worked on Saturday Night Live, A.P. Bio, The Last Man On Earth, and Shrill and Sunnyside. "One night with you guys, and I already have vampires and thugs trying to kill me?!" Since when did Netflix start making found-in-the-back-of-the-video-store B-movie horror flicks? But you know, I'll allow it. Vampires vs The Bronx is exactly what it sounds like - a group of young friends from the Bronx fight to save their neighborhood from a band of vampires. Made by a Funny or Die and SNL director, and produced by Lorne Michaels. The ensemble cast includes Jaden Michael, Gerald W. Jones III, Gregory Diaz IV, Sarah Gadon, Cliff "Method Man" Smith, Shea Whigham, Coco Jones, Joel "The Kid Mero" Martinez, Chris Redd, Vladimir Caamaño, Jeremie Harris, and also, surprise, Zoe Saldaña. Happy Birthday to one of Wamg’s favorite movie stars! Pam’s iconic movie career began when she moved to Los Angeles in the late ‘60s from her native North Carolina at age 18. After a tiny role in Russ Meyer’s Beyond The Valley Of The Dolls (1970), she landed a job as a receptionist for American International Pictures where she was discovered by Jack Hill, an Aip director who cast her in a pair of women’s prison films: The Big Doll House (1971) and The Big Bird Cage (1972). Soon she was known as the “Queen of Blaxploitation” at a time when film roles for African-American women were, as Grier puts it, “practically invisible, or painfully stereotypical”.

Aiello in Spike Lee's "Do the Right Thing".
Actor Danny Aiello has passed away at age 86 following a brief illness. Aiello didn't start acting until age 34 but when he did, he became a reliable and popular character actor. He was nominated for a Best Supporting Actor Oscar in Spike Lee's "Do the Right Thing", playing the owner of a pizza parlor trying to navigate boiling racial tensions in the neighborhood. He also had a memorable role in Norman Jewison's "Moonstruck". Other films include "The Godfather Part II", "The Front", "The Purple Rose of Cairo", "Radio Days" (the latter three with Woody Allen), "Fingers", "Fort Apache the Bronx", "The Cemetary Club", "Ready to Wear", "The Professional", "Once Upon a Time in America" and "Prince of the City". Although Aiello worked with some of the most legendary directors, his one regret was not having been cast in a Martin Scorsese film.

Chicago – Pam Grier has a strong, peaceful aura. After inventing the female action hero in her early 1970s hits “Coffy” and “Foxy Brown,” Grier has navigated her life through optimistic success. She was in Chicago for a book signing at Borders State Street, promoting ‘Foxy: My Life in Three Acts.”
Pam Grier was born in North Carolina, and despite some difficult and exploitative circumstances in her early development, managed to go to college and move to Los Angeles. She was discovered working as a secretary for American International Pictures, which led to some early 1970s women-in-prison films (”The Big Bird Cage”).
It was shortly thereafter that the big break came with two decade-defining films, “Coffy” [1973] and “Foxy Brown” [1974]. Part of the so-called “blaxploitation” period, Grier’s roles were different simply because she became the first woman lead in an action movie. With her beauty and overt sexuality, she re-imagined the ideal hero,...

A special thanks to this week’s guest columnist: Brian Solomon
I’d like to thank Missy Yearian and Will Melton for inviting me to take part in The Hump Day Threesome here in Fused Film’s Unhinged—and as the first guest contributor, no less. I’d like to, but I’m afraid that what I have to contribute might be construed not as thanks, but instead as some passive-aggressive form of contempt.
Because on this day, in response to their invitation, I’m introducing them, and you perchance, to some pretty bad movies. Not just any bad movies, mind you, but a trio of movies from the Mediterranean–the veritable Fertile Crescent of crap cinema if ever there was one. So strap in and join me in my gondola of god-awfulness as I take you on a romantic journey through the bacteria-ridden waters of high schlock.

Villainy isn't just found in an evil plot, a straight razor, or a hockey mask. Sometimes it's a crippling state of mind and place that sucks the soul out of its heroes and heroines. It can be Purgatory, it can be hell, it can be a mental asylum, or it can be a bustling metropolis. So, I'd like to salute 1970s New York as being one of the most vicious, ruthless villains to ever wreck havoc on the silver screen.
By now you're regarding me with skepticism, outright derision, or a need to see Pinhead or Jigsaw saluted for the millionth time on a Halloween list. But think about the lurking menace behind Serpico, Taxi Driver, Fort Apache the Bronx, Cruising, Dog Day Afternoon, Klute, Mean Streets, Death Wish and dozens more. (Every once and awhile Hollywood mixed it up and set something in San Fransisco. But it always felt like a New York stand-in,...
