Bud Spencer co-wrote the script under his real life name of Carlo Pedersoli. The movie is the only feature film where Spencer has been a writer, though after this movie Spencer worked as a writer on a number of tele-movies.
The name of the South American village was Amantido. Some of the movie was actually shot in South America in in Cartagena, Colombia, where a number of locals got to work on the picture as extras and background artists.
Director Steno and actor Bud Spencer previously had collaborated on four "Flatfoot" film franchise movies in the 1970s. "Banana Joe" was their fifth and final theatrical feature film though the two later collaborated on a number of 1988 "Big Man" tele-movies.
The film's main movie poster was memorable for featuring Banana Joe (Bud Spencer) carrying a branch of bananas twice the size of his torso.
