Despite being released after You're Out of Your Mind, Maggie (1979) the stories in this film are set before that, as this is edited from the previously released TV-series Madicken (1979).
After directing The Brothers Lionheart (1977) Olle Hellbom got very tired and decided to step down as director and only produce the two Madicken movies. Göran Graffman was chosen as the new director because Hellbom was impressed with his work on the TV-series Den vita stenen (1973).
This film is edited together from the Madicken (1979) TV-series but only about half as long. Two episodes were completely cut: One where Mrs. Nilsson, Madicken's neighbor, testaments her body to science after death and one when they celebrate Christmas. Also, a narrator was added, namely Astrid Lindgren herself, the writer of the Madicken books.
