For this month’s installment of “TV Terrors” we revisit one of the most iconic bits of horror movie marketing of all time: when Jason Voorhees took “The Arsenio Hall Show“!
The first time I ever saw the teaser for Jason Takes Manhattan was on the weekend of July 5, 1989. My dad had taken my little brother and I to see Weekend at Bernie’s, and while we were sitting through the trailers, Jason Voorhees suddenly popped up. It was that famed teaser that everyone remembers with Jason looking out onto the cityscape, promising a Friday the 13th sequel wherein Jason would quite literally slice and dice his way through New York City.
Although my parents strictly forbade us from watching Friday the 13th films at the time, I was utterly enamored with Jason Voorhees at just six years old. The teaser didn’t scare me, but it excited me, and ended...

From It's a Wonderful Life to Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, there are no shortage of "What If...?"-style stories that tackle an alternate history of what came to be. But none of them have focused on an alternate world where Ed Gein didn't become infamous, which is the subject of James Murray's No Gein. From the story's origins to his take on "Pop Culture Alternative History" and how it would impact a movie like Halloween, we dive all into No Gein in our latest Q&a:
Ed Gein has captured the attention of so many storytellers. What drew you to the story of Ed Gein?
I’m an 80’s kid, so during my childhood, Friday the 13th and all those other slasher movies were popular. Later, I got into Halloween and Psycho, but I didn’t know who Ed Gein was for a while. At some point...

JoBlo.com recently launched a new weekly documentary series called 80s Horror Memories, where each year of the 1980s has five episodes dedicated to it. Looking back at 1980, we discussed Maniac, Dressed to Kill, Alligator, Friday the 13th, The Shining, Prom Night, and The Fog. The second five episodes were a journey through 1981, covering The Funhouse, The Burning, Friday the 13th Part 2, My Bloody Valentine, Halloween II, The Evil Dead, The Howling, and An American Werewolf in London, as well as the careers of horror hosts Elvira and Joe Bob Briggs. The next five were, of course, all about movies that came out in 1982: Conan the Barbarian, The Thing, Halloween III: Season of the Witch, and Poltergeist, with an examination of the short-lived 3-D boom along the way. For 1983, we talked about a trio of Stephen King adaptations, Jaws 3-D, Sleepaway Camp, the rise of TV horror anthologies, and Psycho II.

John Carpenter is back with a new album next week: Lost Themes IV: Noir.
To celebrate, the Halloweenies are unlocking their past episode from January 2022 on the maestro’s 1987 relic, Prince of Darkness. Join Michael Roffman, Dan Caffrey, McKenzie Gerber, and Rachel Reeves in the basement of a Los Angeles monastery as they decipher their feelings on the curious case study of the crossroads between science and faith.
Together, they debate whether or not this intriguing intersection overpowers the narrative and characters, chart where this fits in Carpenter’s overall oeuvre, and meditate on a few what-ifs in the casting department. They also marvel at the pulsing score, discuss its parallels to Inferno, and try to make sense of the mythos at the center.

Remakes are always a tricky proposition. Some of the greats both in the horror genre and elsewhere are actually remakes, whether it’s a loose one or not. Be it The Magnificent Seven coming from Seven Samurai or The Thing being birthed into imitation dog from the Christian Nyby and Howard Hawks original. I talk about The Thing A Lot but obviously it’s for a reason. You could also throw The Fly in that same category too while we are here. Those are some of the examples of the good but unfortunately, things can go downhill and fast. You have harmless ones like the Friday the 13th remake or Texas Chainsaw, the annoyingly unnecessary like Halloween and Amityville Horror, or the egregiously awful like The Fog and A Nightmare on Elm Street. Like them or loathe them, or in our case both, they are here to stay, and each...

Sony is reportedly now in the mix to acquire Paramount in a move that would bring many of entertainment’s best-known franchises under the control of one company.
Well here’s the very definition of a power move: according to reports, Sony may have joined the race to acquire Paramount Global, the company that is currently on sale.
Paramount has been in the shop window for a while now but most analysts believe that 2024 is the year that a deal for the company will be done and for a good while now, Skydance Media has seemed to be in pole position to acquire Paramount Global. With that comes Paramount Pictures, the grand old Hollywood studio that boasts a rich history that is intertwined with the history of Hollywood itself.

Back in 1986, Caroline Williams played one of my all-time favorite horror final girls, “Stretch” in The Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2. She has followed that with several more horror movie appearances, taking roles in the likes of Leprechaun 3, Blind, and the recent Nicolas Cage Dracula movie Renfield, among many others. Film historians are in a perpetual debate about what constitutes the first slasher film, but "The Texas Chain Saw Massacre," "Black Christmas," "Halloween," and "Friday the 13th" all have one thing in common — they were scary as hell. 50 years later in the case of the former two, Leatherface with his chainsaw and Billy's obscene phone calls still manage to terrify new viewers straight out of their skin. Slasher films dominated the horror genre. But as time went on the perspective began to shift to keep things interesting. There were always audiences who showed up to see how the final girl would survive the madness this time, but more and more horror fans were turning in to support their favorite killers. Kills got more inventive, human characters became little more than bodies ripe for slaughter, and successful slasher icons were able to sustain long-running franchises, many of which continue today.

Writer/director Chris Nash’s slasher movie In a Violent Nature had its world premiere at the Sundance Film Festival earlier this year (you can read a review by JoBlo’s own Chris Bumbray right Here), and it won’t be long before a wider audience has a chance to see it, as it has been announced that IFC Film will be giving the film a theatrical release on May 31st! Along with this release date announcement comes the unveiling of a full trailer for In a Violent Nature, and you can check that out in the embed above.
Sundance said In a Violent Nature is about “the enigmatic resurrection, rampage, and retribution of an undead monster in a remote wilderness.” Variety added that it features “a masked killer named Johnny traipsing through the woods, camping teens, a local who escaped death years ago, buckets of gore. When you hear the label “Music Maniacs,” a few names probably come to mind. And we’re willing to bet that one of them is Alice Cooper, who is indeed joining McFarlane’s toy line.
McFarlane Toys has announced that their Music Maniacs: Alice Cooper action figure will launch for pre-orders on March 22, and you can get a first look at the upcoming toy below.
The “Music Maniacs” line is a spinoff of McFarlane’s popular “Movie Maniacs” line, which returned to life last year – though the focus is no longer squarely on horror movies.
Alice Cooper is most definitely a Music Maniac but he’s also a Movie Maniac too. As Luiz H.C. wrote on Bloody Disgusting back in 2017, “Cooper’s love of the horror genre goes far beyond his music, as the artist has been involved with several scary movies as well. Sunday wasn’t just St. Patrick’s Day, it was also Kurt Russell’s birthday — and the Halloweenies think that’s worth celebrating. After all, for over 45 years, Russell has kept us rooting for him in a smorgasbord of iconic roles: Rj MacReady, Snake Plissken, Jack Burton, Elvis Presley, Wyatt Earp, Santa Claus, Stuntman Mike, Curtis McCabe, Mr. Nobody, Jeff Taylor, Rudy Russo, Eldon Perry, and, of course, Captain Ron.

In November of 1993, writer/director John Lafia (Child’s Play 2) unleashed Cujo Cocaine Bear (great punk band name) upon the world with Man’s Best Friend. In the movie, a Tibetan Mastiff named Max 3000 is released from a genetic research facility by a reporter named Lori (Breakfast Club’s Ally Sheedy) while trying to expose a company for their cruel experiments on animals. We eventually learn that while Max might look like the best boy ever, he has a lot more in common with Wesley Snipes’ Simon Phoenix character from Demolition Man than he does Lassie.
While in the lab’s care, Max has been experimented on and genetically enhanced with the DNA of a slew of dangerous animals. For example, if threatened he can camouflage himself with the colors of your garage and hide there like a chameleon before deciding to pop out and bite your dick off. He has super strength,...

For starters, Max’s horror selection offers a relatively robust selection of foundational horror titles and franchises, including Paranormal Activity and Friday the 13th.
Here are the best Max horror movies you can stream right now.

If there is one unwritten rule of horror movies, it's that successful ones will get sequels. When they cease to be successful, there is a more than decent chance the franchise in question will be rebooted. This is the circle of life with genre movies in Hollywood. For "Friday the 13th" and its masked killer Jason Voorhees, the franchise had remained resilient for nearly three decades without ever being rebooted. But when that reboot came in 2009, it offered a new generation of horror fans a way to become acquainted with Mr. Voorhees.

In 1972, “Deliverance” was unleashed upon a worldwide audience, taking hold of the box office and becoming a true cultural milestone packed with cinematic tropes still referenced today. In many ways, this disturbing thriller about four men on a canoeing trip through a remote section of wilderness as sadistic mountain men stalk them is regarded as one of the first takes on the concept of an evil waiting in the background, with notable entries following in the decades to come ranging from the likes of “The Last House on the Left” (released the same year) to landmarks “Friday the 13th” and “Predator” alongside more recent efforts “Eden Lake” and “It Comes at Night.“ Has the genre now reached a peak, or did this already occur long ago?

For 1983, we talked about a trio of Stephen King adaptations, Jaws 3-D, Sleepaway Camp, the rise of TV horror anthologies, and...

The producers at New Line Cinema had the opening fatality of Final Destination 3 in their back pocket well before the movie’s 2006 premiere. In fact, talks of a deadly theme park ride made the rounds before creative partners James Wong and Glen Morgan returned to write the script. After the disappointing return on 2003’s Willard, New Line wanted something thrilling for its next horror project. A “roller coaster” movie, as New Line founder Robert Shaye put it. Like-minded Richard Brener is also owed some credit; the executive producer apparently was on the same wavelength after brainstorming ideas — initially anything big and transportational, such as boats and trains — for the intended conclusion of this franchise. However, the overwhelming box-office numbers steered the original plan off course and Death lived on to kill another day.

With no recent news on that rumoured new Friday The 13th game, what are fans to do? Well, if you’re like indie developer Steve McCall, you make your own. Not only that, but you take your existing game, along with other slasher games that you’ve made, and you demake it into the style of an Nes game.
The story goes that McCall had created four games a few decades ago where you play as one of four iconic slashers: Jason Voorhees, Freddy Krueger, Michael Myers and Candyman. The four games—Friday The 13th: Return to Camp Blood, Halloween: October 31st, A Nightmare on Elm Street: Son of a Hundred Maniacs, and Candyman: Be My Victim—were developed for what he referred to as “archaic computers”, and feature simplified controls.
Really though, when you’re playing as one of horror’s favourite slashers, do you really need complicated controls?...

Every few months, someone seems to ask either the show’s creator Bryan Fuller or series star Mads Mikkelsen what’s going on with their hoped-for revival of Hannibal. Eight years have gone by since NBC cancelled the television series, which was inspired by characters in novels by Thomas Harris, after its third season, but Fuller, Mikkelsen, and fellow star Hugh Dancy have always let it be known that they’re hoping to reunite to make a fourth season at a new home. Eight months ago, Mikkelsen said, “It’s all about finding a home for it. Of course, we’re running out of time. We can’t wait twenty years, but in the next couple of years, if somebody finds a home, I think we’re all ready to take it up again.” Now, during an interview with Business Insider, Mikkelsen has given an update, saying there’s still...

Presented by Lisa Frankenstein, 1989 Week is dialing the clock back to the crossroads year for the genre with a full week of features that dig six feet under into the year. Today, Rachel Reeves lists the five baddest teen queens of 1989.
Bridging the gap between the ’80s and ’90s, 1989 was an interesting year for horror. With a robust roster of strong slasher icons to lean on, innovative sub-genres and a thriving physical media industry, 1989 desperately clung to the last gasp of the ’80s while tentatively experimenting with what the ’90s might bring. Along with a wealth of later-entry franchise sequels, this indecisive decade straddling also resulted in some eclectic representations of all-to-familiar tropes, including the “bad girl.”
The allure of the bad girl is one of the most enduring tropes in horror film history. Whether labeled as a witch, vampire, monster, sexually promiscuous, uppity or any other brand of stigmatizing language,...

Presented by Lisa Frankenstein, 1989 Week is dialing the clock back to the crossroads year for the genre with a full week of features that dig six feet under into the year. Today, Alex Divincenzo revisits the great slasher slump of 1989.
While horror fans often look back on the ’80s with a nostalgic glow, 1989 was not what most would consider a strong year for the genre — particularly when compared to the embarrassment of riches spawned by the rest of the decade. Not even Michael Myers, Jason Voorhees, and Freddy Krueger were safe from the slasher slump.
Each franchise had its ups and downs across a cumulative 17 movies in the ’80s, but the decade came to a close with low points — creatively and financially — in all three sagas: Friday the 13th Part VIII: Jason Takes Manhattan, A Nightmare on Elm Street 5: The Dream Child, and Halloween 5: The Revenge of Michael Myers.

Supermassive’s horror game Until Dawn has been confirmed for a Playstation 5 and PC release later in 2024.
Playstation held their first State Of Play of 2024 last night (31st January). Gamers around the world got sneak peeks at Playstation’s upcoming games and plenty of new announcements.
One of those announcements was Until Dawn’s release on Playstation 5. Supermassive’s seminal horror game from 2015, originally released for PS4, will be available on both PS5 and PC sooner than you’d think.
While the team didn’t give the game a set release date, they did reveal that it would be coming later this year.
Until Dawn is arguably Supermassive’s biggest release to date and for good reason. It’s almost unbearably tense and has excellent replay value. The gameplay consists of making choices rather than traditional exploration and combat. The choices you make then change how the narrative unfolds and...

Tokyo Vice will also be back in February for season 2. Stars Ansel Elgort, Ken Watanabe, Rinko Kikuchi, Rachel Keller, Show Kasamatsu, and Ayumi Ito are joined by Kubozuka and Miki Maya this time around, as Jake Adelstein feels the danger closing in on him. Max also welcomes you to the premiere of the highly acclaimed (and highly depraved) Dicks: The Musical this month, as a couple of self-obsessed businessmen discover they’re identical twins and decided to bring their divorced parents back together.

Writer/director Chris Nash’s slasher movie In a Violent Nature had its world premiere at the Sundance Film Festival earlier this month (you can read a review by JoBlo’s own Chris Bumbray right Here), and it won’t be long before a wider audience has a chance to see it, as it has already secured theatrical and streaming distribution with IFC and Shudder. A release date hasn’t been announced yet, but a teaser has made its way online, and you can check that out in the embed above.
Jennifer Nettles, lead vocalist of the country duo Sugarland and a successful solo artist, got into acting by playing Dolly Parton’s mother in the 2015 TV movie Dolly Parton’s Coat of Many Colors. Since then she has appeared in the sequel to that movie, Dolly Parton’s Christmas of Many Colors: Circle of Love, performed in Chicago and Waitress on Broadway, had roles in the film Harriet and the TV series Underground, and appeared on multiple episodes of the HBO show The Righteous Gemstones… which happens to be executive produced by David Gordon Green, so that paved the way for her to have a role in Green’s most recent film, The Exorcist: Believer. Now Deadline reports that Nettles is following her Exorcist role by being cast in another genre project: the horror action series The Bondsman!

A new episode of the Real Slashers video series has just been released, and with this one we’re looking back at a movie that gave us two iconic slashers for the price of one: the 2003 monster mash Freddy vs. Jason (watch it Here)! Somehow it’s been over twenty years since that long-awaited match-up reached theatres screens, and you can hear all about what happened when Freddy Krueger crossed paths with Jason Voorhees in the video embedded above.
Directed by Ronny Yu (who previously worked with another iconic slasher on Bride of Chucky) from a screenplay by Damian Shannon and Mark J. Swift (with an uncredited polish by David S. Goyer), Freddy vs. Jason has the following synopsis: Get ready for the ultimate showdown! It’s been nearly ten years since Freddy, from the Nightmare on Elm Street series, invaded people’s dreams to exact his deadly form of revenge and murder.

You don't stop Jack Reacher. I mean, have you seen the size of that guy? And you don't stop his TV series either, since Prime Video has officially confirmed that production is underway on "Reacher" season 3 following the explosive finale of season 2 last week. This is only good news for fans: there was a way-too-long two-year break between seasons 1 and 2 of the brutal, wildly entertaining action series, and with cameras already rolling, that means season 3 will likely arrive sooner rather than later. Perhaps by the end of 2024? Prime's official press release doesn't specify, but it does contain other details to absorb and enjoy.
First of all, "Reacher" season 3 will be based on "Persuader," the seventh novel in author Lee Child's long-running series. This is excellent news. We'll dwell on this momentarily. The release does note that season 3 is filming in Toronto, which means Canada could be doubling for the...

In A Violent Nature might be Canadian writer and director Chris Nash’s feature debut, but he’s hardly an untested rookie (and it shows). His ABCs of Death 2 segment “Z is for Zygote” teases his knack for producing practical effects and what to expect by the bucket full in his subversive Sundance slasher. Nash’s experience in effects departments, like serving as On-Set Creature Effects Supervisor for Psycho Goreman, translates into a slasher experience that stands pound-for-pound with modern masterclasses of mutilation like the Terrifier series. In A Violent Nature is one of the bloodiest, most punishing, and refreshingly original slashers in some time, but its unique approach will divide horror audiences — that’s the looming risk that comes along with shoot-for-the-moon ambitions.
