“Being good or bad isn’t a choice a woman gets to make by herself,” filmmaker Elizabeth Sankey narrates in her spellbinding new documentary, “Witches.” It’s an incisive perspective on an age-old cinematic question that’s never had a good enough answer: “Are you a good witch or a bad witch?” as Glinda once asked. As Sankey might see it, the question itself put Dorothy in danger.
Our ever-shifting sense of women’s autonomy resonates in countless contexts, and that’s worth keeping front of mind throughout this feature-length consideration of postpartum mental health and the historic persecution of women. Weaving personal experience and keen anthropological theory into a lush and haunting tapestry of magical portrayals from pop culture, Sankey achieves an intricate archival exposition backed with tremendous feeling. She uses old film footage, insightful interviews from experts and friends, and select theatrical scenes (all silent) shot specifically for...

Marvel's best couple is coming back to try and save Sony's woebegone live-action Spider-Verse one final time. With "Morbius" failing to make "It's Morbin' Time!" happen and "Madame Web" falling harder than Dakota Johnson trying to pop the lid on a soda can, it's up to Tom Hardy's lobster tank-diving journalist Eddie Brock and his tater tots-snacking, gooey-hearted (and just plain gooey) boyfriend Venom to keep the studio's hopes of a viable "Spider-Man" extended universe alive. (At least until Aaron Taylor-Johnson's nose-biting Kraven the Hunter arrives to usher in the next Yuletide season classic.)
"Venom: The Last Dance" sees "Venom" and "Venom: Let There Be Carnage" co-writer Kelly Marcel trying her hand at directing for the first time, once again drawing from a story she cooked up with Hardy. The pair have gradually become the main creative driving force behind this franchise over the course of the trilogy,...

This Dark Matter review contains no spoilers.
The best-selling science fiction novel Dark Matter by Blake Crouch has been adapted into an Apple TV+ original series, bolstered by an all-star cast. With Crouch himself staying on as the showrunner and executive producer, Dark Matter unfolds at a brisk pace that leans more into the thriller elements of the source material than the science fiction premise. And while many of the familiar stylistic and thematic tropes in a number of Apple TV+ original thrillers are on display, the performance by the series’ leads elevates the material and helps make Dark Matter stand distinct from its contemporaries on the platform.
Dark Matter follows Jason Dessen (Joel Edgerton), a physics teacher at a local university in the suburbs of Chicago who lives a happy, if unassuming, life with his wife Daniela (Jennifer Connelly) and their teenage son Charlie (Oakes Fegley). After reconnecting with...

“The Morning Show” cast mates Julianna Margulies and Holland Taylor are each seeking a second win in this category after respectively being honored for “ER” (1995) and “The Practice” (1999). The same applies to Archie Panjabi (“Hijack”), who previously won for “The Good Wife” (2010).
“Sugar” actress Anna Gunn is vying for a third trophy of this kind following her dual “Breaking Bad” victories (2013-2014). Preparing to make your 2024 Emmy predictions for Best Drama Actor? Be sure to take a look through our photo gallery highlighting the likeliest potential nominees. In the absence of reigning champ Kieran Culkin (“Succession”), whose show ended last May, possible category newcomer Gary Oldman (“Slow Horses”) has emerged as the clear frontrunner.
None of the six actors who competed for this prize last year – including “Succession” stars Brian Cox and Jeremy Strong – are involved in the current race. Rounding out that group were Bob Odenkirk of the long-concluded “Better Call Saul” and ongoing series leads Jeff Bridges (“The Old Man”) and Pedro Pascal (“The Last of Us”). Naturally, this opens the door for dozens of potential first-time contenders.
The only 2024 hopeful who has previously been recognized in this category is Timothy Olyphant, who received a 2011 bid for the role he currently plays on “Justified: City Primeval,” a continuation of “Justified.

In 2019, the documentary of 80s horror In Search of Darkness became an instant hit with horror fans. Now, a beautiful coffee table style companion book is available and is a must-own for all fans of one of horror’s greatest eras. The book is a walk down the horror aisle of the best mom and pop video store in the heyday of VHS, featuring full color photos, poster art, insightful essays and more. More than just a nostalgic throwback, In Search of Darkness is the kind of book I wish I’d had back in my years as a burgeoning horror fan but is also satisfying for the film fanatic I have become in the years since.
The format is beautifully and simply laid out, with at least a dozen (usually more) movies from each year of the decade presented in order of release accompanied by informative and insightful essays...

We may not be getting a big-screen sequel to Denis Villeneuve’s Blade Runner 2049, but the saga will continue on Prime Video with Blade Runner 2099. Production on the live-action series is gearing up to start in April, but Deadline reports that a new director has been tapped to helm the first two episodes of Blade Runner 2099.

Exclusive: Coming off directing and executive producing the first two episodes of FX’s Shōgun, Jonathan van Tulleken has been tapped to direct and executive produce the first two episodes of another high-profile limited series, Prime Video’s Blade Runner 2099.
Tulleken replaces Jeremy Podeswa, who was originally set to direct the first two episodes but had to step away due to scheduling conflicts as the Blade Runner 2099 production schedule was altered by the WGA strike.
The series was originally slated to film in Belfast last summer. In May, a couple of weeks into the writers strike, it was revealed that, due to the work stoppage, production on Blade Runner 2099 was delayed, likely until spring 2024. Northern Ireland Screen said at the time the project had “been prepping on the ground in Belfast for many months now.”
In October, it was reported that Blade Runner 2099 was moving away from Belfast.

Don’t confuse Apple TV+’s adaptation of The Changeling for a reboot of the 1980 horror movie or 2008 Clint Eastwood film of the same name. This series is based on Victor Lavalle’s 2017 novel, which was praised as a “smart and knotty merger of horror, fantasy, and realism.” Studios rushed to adapt the book almost — in 2018, there was some competitive bidding for the rights, which FX won. In 2021, the project moved to Apple TV+. The high interest in the material means there’s a lot of pressure on the streamer to get things right, and by the looks of the trailer, it just might.

Horror often asks for a lot of empathy and understanding from its audience. It begs us not to roll our eyes when someone drops a weapon that might give them the upper hand or when they run upstairs and not out the perfectly safe backdoor. Some films, like The Strangers or Night of the Living Dead, create narrative reasons for questionable behavior, which works as we ride with the characters. But then there’s Talk to Me, which paints a painful portrait of someone going through it. Mia (Sophie Wilde) does a lot of which an audience might disagree, but the film excels because it makes her hurt palpable and, more importantly, understandable. Talk to Me makes cliché tropes feel real because it builds its foundation on heartbreak, loneliness, and the things we do to make ourselves feel better when everything feels hopeless.

Now Apple TV+ has announced (via Deadline) that The Changeling will premiere on Friday, September 8th… and along with that announcement, they have also unveiled a batch of first look images, which you can check out at the bottom of this article.

By 1983, Stephen King had rocketed to the top of the publishing world within a fairly short period of time. His first novel, Carrie, had been published only nine years before but he was already considered the modern master of the horror novel. The adaptations of his work, Brian DePalma’s Carrie (1976), Tobe Hooper’s TV movie Salem’s Lot (1979), and Stanley Kubrick’s The Shining (1980) had only served to feed the fires of his popularity. King had become a cottage industry by the third year of the new decade and the three films based on his work released that year remain among the best connected to his name while exploring some of the greatest issues he grappled with in the early years of his career.

In October of 1998, it wasn’t only Chucky who got lucky, it was Universal. Thanks to foresight of writer Don Mancini and producer David Kirschner, the studio capitalized on the still-thriving post-Scream wave by resurrecting their Child’s Play franchise. At the time, the series had been gathering dust for most of the decade after the less-than returns of 1991’s Child’s Play 3.

“Lesson one… You never go anywhere alone, unless you’ve got no choice. And lesson two… only travel during daylight, unless you’ve got no choice.”
In June of 2003, Danny Boyle unleashed hell upon Americans with 28 Days Later. Written by then-novelist Alex Garland — in his feature screenwriting debut — the film captured the zeitgeist with its groundbreaking style, prescient casting, and subversion of the zombie genre … despite not being a zombie film. Technically. Or is it one? Rest assured, we’ll get into that.
Who’s we? Your Halloweenies. Hope you’ve brought a backpack — or, at the very least, a plastic bag — because the gang is hiking across England in search of salvation. Join co-hosts Michael Roffman, Mac Gerber, Justin Gerber, and special guest Meagan Navarro as they discuss how the film saved Boyle’s career and became one of the most influential films of its time.

Sometimes, a particular subgenre simply isn’t your thing. I can count the number of haunted house movies I like with no fear of running out of fingers: Robert Wise’s original The Haunting; The Innocents; Crimson Peak; Hausu; Beetlejuice if you count comedies. Lake Mungo is a borderline case, not truly a haunted house movie for me, but a great film. I might also say The Others, but I last saw it about 20 years ago, so who knows? There’s one more I enjoy a lot, and we’ll come to that, but to cut a long story short, The Changeling had a bit of a mountain to climb with me. I’ll say this upfront: if you’re generally into ghost/haunting movies, you can add a star to my grade here.

“With the death of disco in 1979 and a demand for change, the 1980s evolved into a neon-soaked totally rad decade held firm together with cans of “Aqua Net” burning a hole in the ozone. Time for free love and hope for peace was over. It was time for a revolution. But with filmmakers, their creative freedoms would lead to explore more areas which haven’t been touched on before. It was the year horror would forever be changed. We’re talking Dressed to Kill,...
