Isaac Asimov is considered one of the biggest science fiction minds of the 20th century, along with authors like Robert A. Heinlein and Arthur C. Clarke. He wrote hundreds of books, including his highly influential "Robot" and "Foundation" series. These shaped many of the sci-fi stories of today, establishing familiar tropes like the galactic empire, and robots being programmed to be unable to harm humans.
Books like "Dune" and "The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy" owe a lot to Asimov, as do movies like "Star Wars." And yet, Asimov wasn't exactly the biggest sci-fi fan out there, at least not in TV and film. In an interview with the L.A. Times in 1988, Asimov simply described the "Star Trek" films, "Planet of the Apes" and "Back to the Future" as "decent." Asimov even wrote an essay for TV Guide that criticized "Star Trek" and its take on science -- though he...

Frasier and Everybody Loves Raymond are two very different shows. While both aired in the 1990s and early 2000s, they appeared on different networks and largely appealed to different audiences. Their subject matters were distinct, too. Frasier followed a radio psychologist as he navigated an upper-crust life in Seattle. Everybody Loves Raymond focused on Ray Barone and his extended family in New York. Still, the two shows have an unlikely connection. In fact, Frasier is partly responsible for getting Everybody Loves Raymond off the ground in a roundabout way.

Note: Today marks Bruce Willis’s 68th birthday. We wanted to take a moment to wish the icon a very happy birthday and reflect on his career:
Here at JoBlo – we love Bruce Willis. When we heard back in March of 2022 that he would step back from acting due to his tragic Aphasia diagnosis, we were as shocked as everyone else, even if there were signs that things weren’t great with Willis going back a number of years. His last truly prominent role was M. Night Shyamalan’s Glass in 2019, while his last lead role was in Eli Roth’s Death Wish. Since then, it’s been chiefly VOD movies for Willis, where his roles were secondary at best. With his recent frontotemporal dementia diagnosis, we now know the truth.
Whatever the case, we here at JoBlo Originals wish to extend our very best to the man and his family at this difficult time.

“That Don’t Impress Me Much” country singer, Shania Twain, is a proud Canadian, now owning her own house near Ontario. Twain detailed her childhood in Northern Ontario with From This Moment On, including one painful “rite of passage” experienced by most kids — getting your tongue stuck to frozen metal.

After graduating high school, the artist briefly moved to Toronto, Canada where she sang at clubs. Years later, Twain was signed to a record label, releasing her self-titled collection in 1993.

Shania Twain had several formative music moments while attending school — from learning the trumpet in high school to picking up her first “noisy, percussive” instrument in kindergarten.
In her memoir, though, Twain described a challenging education experience primarily due to constantly switching schools. Here’s what this artist said in From This Moment On about attending a whopping 17 schools.

Jim Mahoney was one of Hollywood’s go-to guys. He spent 60+ years in public relations, guiding the images of Clark Gable, Frank Sinatra, Steve McQueen, Bob Hope, Johnny Carson, Lee Marvin, Burt Lancaster, Christie Brinkley, Peggy Lee, and hundreds more.
He was on the front lines when Frank Sinatra Jr. was kidnapped, and was at the party at Peter Lawford’s house the night Marilyn Monroe died. He was also there with the Rat Pack in Las Vegas.
Now age 95, Mahoney has captured all of that in a memoir, Get Mahoney!: A Hollywood Insider’s Memoir. “Get Mahoney!” was the phrase often used when stars and their handlers knew trouble was brewing and needed to keep their names out of the press. Mahoney was good at his job, and frequently referred to himself as a better “suppress” agent than press agent.

Paul Raley, who shared a Daytime Emmy for writing David Letterman’s pre-Late Night show and worked on TV sitcoms and specials, died June 6 in Los Angeles. He was 71. The WGA said he had been in declining health in recent years but did not specify a cause of death. Raley worked in advertising in New York before hooking up with the writers of The David Letterman Show, which had an unceremonious four-month run on NBC in 1980. When NBC handed David Letterman Late Night in 1982, his offbeat humor ushered in a new era of late night.
Thirty-three years later, he's stepping down from a late-night landscape that changed around him, having stayed true to himself as the medium changed from appointment viewing to something to be easily digested the next morning in three- to four-minute clips.
"I recognized the value of it," Letterman told The New York Times back in April of his competitors' tendency to gear their shows toward digital audiences. "It's just, I didn't know what to say. You go back to your parents' house,...

As David Letterman enters his final weeks as Late Show host, following a late-night career that has spanned more than three decades, many of his favorite guests have stopped by the Ed Sullivan Theater to bid farewell to him. Since Conan O'Brien, who took the reins of NBC's Late Night program after Letterman left to host CBS' Late Show in 1993, is likely too busy filming his own show to visit Letterman, he penned a touching tribute for Entertainment Weekly to the man who inspired him to venture into late night.

David Letterman is leaving the Late Show, have you heard? And while he's getting nostalgic musical guests for last hurrahs, he's also going to be getting a ton of tributes. One such tribute came in the form of an essay written by Conan O'Brien in Entertainment Weekly, in which he describes Letterman's comedy as a "revolution" and "stunning." He goes on to describe the first time he watched Letterman, which was on his morning one (called simply The David Letterman Show), which was "subversive" and "untamed" — especially for a morning show. Then came the late-night show, which reinvented the format, moving it from comforting to "surreal and off-kilter." He writes:So let's keep it simple: Not one single writer/performer in the last 35 years has had Dave’s seismic impact on comedy. Every day, I read that a new comic has ‘changed the game,’ and admittedly there is an absurd abundance...

If one were to go strictly based off representations in film and television, you’d be forgiven for thinking that the world of computer programming/hacking/coding is primarily a man’s sport. The most recent example of this misguided notion would be the Oscar-friendly Alan Turing biopic “The Imitation Game,” which centers around a tortured-genius codebreaker. And yet, Gillian Jacobs of “Community” is out to debunk the myth that the world of computing is strictly a boy’s club. "The Queen of Code," Jacobs' directorial debut, is primarily about Grace Hopper, a crack coding expert who, the film argues, deserves to be mentioned in the same breath as Steve Jobs and Bill Gates. It’s a terrific and surprising look not only at Hopper’s indelible and funny personality — dry and witty, she was a former mathematics professor at Vassar and she made a hell of an impression on...

There was no one quite like Crispin Glover when he broke out onto the scene in 1986's award-winning "River's Edge" -- and the same rings true today. Glover has over the years played a list of characters almost as odd as the public persona he's cultivated since first appearing on "The David Letterman Show" in 1987 wearing platform shoes and a wig. He played a geeky dad in "Back to the Future," a silent and perverted assassin the "Charlie's Angels" movies, a loathsome monster in "Beowulf," a mouse-loving social misfit in "Willard," and in this month's "The Bag Man," Glover steals scenes from John Cusack as Ned, a mysterious wheel-chair bound motel receptionist. When he's not acting, Glover makes and tours his own films, and publishes his own books through his publishing company, Volcanic Eruptions. Indiewire spoke with Glover about "Bag Man" (out in select theaters this Friday), cultivating his public persona,...

Bill Murray revealed a bloody cut on his head as he arrived for The Monument Men's premiere in New York last night ( February 4).
The 63-year-old actor, who is to make a rare TV appearance in HBO's miniseries Olive Kitteridge, sported the small injury as he posed on the red carpet with co-stars Cate Blanchett and Matt Damon.
It has been suggested that Murray suffered the wound during a flying Peter Pan stunt on The Late Show with David Letterman a few days prior to yesterday's screening.
The star also famously cut his head after diving into a makeshift pool (formerly a giant dumpster) as he filmed a skit for his appearance on Letterman back in 2010.
Other guests at last night's premiere included John Goodman and the film's writer, director and co-star George Clooney.

London, Mar 1: Joan Rivers faced backlash by the TV audience at 'The David Letterman Show' after she joked about Adele and her weight.
The 79-year-old TV comedian suggested that the British singer should change the name of one of her hit songs to 'Rolling In The Deep Fried Chicken.'
This comment was received with boos from the audience and a bit of laughing, the Mirror reported.
Rivers then said that Adele was very scared because she sang at the awards.
"She said, 'My throat, my throat! I don't know if I can swallow'. And I said, 'Oh yeah, you can swallow'," she added.

She said that though she loved the royal family, Charles was being a little saucy, the Daily Mail reported.

The Late Show with David Letterman is dark this week (as it is more and more wont to be), but it's hard to imagine a world in which Letterman is not a staple of our Late Night lives. Before Letterman got his first show -- an early morning talk show called The David Letterman Show -- he made his mark, outside of his writing and stand-up, with an occasional foray into the world of prime-time television acting (notably with an alien named Mork). It's truly a brief history, but here's a look at David Letterman's now strange flirtation with acting.

Britain’s Got Talent finalist Janey Cutler has revealed that she wants to take some quiet time now that the show is over and consider what her next move will be.
81 year old Janey will have been offered a spot on the Britain’s Got Talent tour, but a recent report suggested that she would be too frail to perform at every venue.
After she failed to make the top three on the ITV show and experienced an embarrassing mistake which saw her playing catch up with the backing track on her last performance, Janey told The Sun that gymnastic troupe Spelbound deserved to win.
She said:
“It’s been a fantastic experience for me – absolutely amazing.
“Everyone was so nice. Well done to Spelbound, who deserved to win.
“I’ll go home now and have a wee think about what I want to do next.”
Her son Drew, 42, added: “She’s exhausted but happy.

The nations favourite Grandma Janey Cutler made her much anticipated return to Britain’s Got Talent tonight.
The Scottish 81 year old started singing when she was 6 in the Salvation Army. However, since then she did not sing again until she was 50 when a friend made her get up in a local pub and sing. Janey hasn’t stopped singing since and has been singing in local pubs, clubs and village halls for the past 30 years. Simon Cowell gave her 3,003 yes’s after her audition in Glasgow.
We were a little worried that Janey wouldn’t be able to live up to the hype she caused after her first audition. Could she make the same impact tonight? Could she choose as good a song? All our fingers were crossed!
