Frances Sternhagen, a Tony-winning actress with many decades on the stage and screen, died Monday of natural causes in New Rochelle, N.Y.
She was known for her recurring role as the regal grandmother of Dr. Carter (Noah Wyle) on “ER” and as Cliff’s mother on “Cheers,” for which she was twice nominated for Emmys.
“Frannie, as she was known to her family, friends, and colleagues was a hardworking, award-winning, beloved and celebrated actress for over 60 years. She was versatile – adept at comedy as well as drama, character roles and leading ladies,” her family said in a statement.

Forty years ago, writer James L. Brooks made one of the most impressive directorial debuts in film history when he brought Larry McMurtry‘s novel “Terms of Endearment” to the screen. Although he had forged a successful career in television, creating classic sitcoms like “The Mary Tyler Moore Show” and “Taxi” and writing the fine Burt Reynolds-Jill Clayburgh romance “Starting Over,” nothing on Brooks’ résumé prepared audiences for the delicate tonal balance of “Terms,” a comedy about the relationship between a mother (Shirley MacLaine) and daughter (Debra Winger) that culminates in the daughter being diagnosed with a terminal illness.
Cancer might not seem like the raw material for wall-to-wall laughs, but that’s exactly what “Terms” provides — and even when the movie goes dark in its final act, Brooks never wanted to lose sight of that initial intention. “It was essential to me in every way you can use the...

Chris Stapleton might be having the busiest week in Nashville. Just two days before the release of his fifth album, Higher, the 45-year-old singer performed “White Horse,” the album’s storming lead single, on this year’s CMA Awards.

John Lennon‘s “(Just Like) Starting Over” was supposed to sound like one Elvis Presley song and one Roy Orbison song. During an interview, John said drawing inspiration from Elvis and Orbison was returning to his “roots.” Interestingly, Orbison said the song that inspired John had nothing to do with his personal emotional state.
John Lennon’s ‘(Just Like) Starting Over’ came from John’s ‘born again-rocker’ phase
The book Lennon on Lennon: Conversations With John Lennon contains excerpts from a Rolling Stone interview from 1980. Around the time John gave that interview, he released his song “(Just Like) Starting Over,” which is obviously indebted to the rock ‘n’ roll music of the 1950s and early 1960s. During the interview, John discussed the thought process behind the song. “All through the taping of ‘Starting Over,’ I was calling what I was doing ‘Elvis Orbison:’ ‘I want you I need only the lonely,...

It doesn’t take a genius to hear that John Lennon‘s “(Just Like) Starting Over” was inspired by Elvis Presley’s music. During an interview, John named the Elvis song and the Roy Orbison song that inspired “(Just Like) Starting Over.” He also revealed how much he was indebted to both artists.
John Lennon’s ‘(Just Like) Starting Over’ paid homage to Elvis Presley and ‘Only the Lonely’
During a 1980 Rolling Stone interview recorded in the book Lennon on Lennon: Conversations With John Lennon, John discussed the genesis of “(Just Like) Starting Over.” “All through the taping of ‘Starting Over,’ I was calling what I was doing ‘Elvis Orbison:’ ‘I want you I need only the lonely,'” he said. His words were a clear callback to Elvis’ “I Want You, I Need You, I Love You” and Roy Orbison’s “Only the Lonely,” two songs that influenced “(Just Like) Starting Over.

The music industry works in mysterious ways. John Lennon’s tragic death in 1980 might have catapulted one of his songs to No. 1 in the United States. The song in question was a tribute to the early rockers Elvis Presley and Roy Orbison.
A John Lennon song hit No. 1 the week after he died
There was a five-year gap between John’s 1975 covers album Rock ‘n’ Roll and his final album, Double Fantasy. The lead single from Double Fantasy was “(Just Like) Starting Over.” That gap would have led to plenty of anticipation for new music from the “Imagine” singer.
According to Stereogum, “(Just Like) Starting Over” was No. 6 on the Billboard Hot 100 the last day of John’s life. The following week, it hit No. 1. Stereogum theorizes “(Just Like) Starting Over” would have climbed to the top even if John had lived. After all, many Paul McCartney songs hit No.

Fans have praised country singer Chris Stapleton’s “breathtaking” rendition of the US national anthem at the Super Bowl 2023.
Stapleton opened the biggest night in American football, currently underway at the 63,000-capacity State Farm Stadium in Glendale, Arizona.
He was accompanied by Coda actor Troy Kotsur, who performed the national anthem in sign language at the Super Bowl tonight.

Stapleton’s version of “The Star Spangled Banner” on Sunday (12 February) drew comparisons to Whitney Houston’s impeccable pre-game performance in 1991.
One fan tweeted: “Chris Stapleton might’ve just sang my favorite Super Bowl rendition of the National Anthem (Whitney Houston aside).”
“Grown-a** men crying to Chris Stapleton singing the national anthem,” another said. “Wow, this one is right up there with Whitney Houston’s performance. Just amazing.

[Warning: The below contains Major spoilers for NCIS Season 19’s “Starting Over” and NCIS: Hawai’i‘s “T’N’T.”] How fitting is it that NCIS: Hawai’i‘s first crossover features actors from another shared universe on TV? Sure, they never crossed paths during their time in the Arrowverse, but Katrina Law (Arrow) and Teddy Sears (The Flash) both have major parts to play as the action moves from NCIS to the island. First, in “Starting Over” in D.C., Nick Torres (Wilmer Valderrama) learns from Jane Tennant (Vanessa Lachey) that a missing witness from an old case might have turned up in Oahu. That leads to the first mention of a conference in Orlando where something happened to lead to rumors of “T’N’T.” So what happened? Timothy McGee (Sean Murray) heard they jumped off a balcony into the hotel pool. It wasn’t that high, Torres says, and they shared a few laughs,...

Christina Haack is breaking down the walls and providing insight into her relationship with Josh Hall. On March 20, the HGTV host posted a few then-and-now photos of the couple. "Nashville: March 2021 [fast-forward to] March 2022," she captioned the series. Borrowing a lyric from Chris Stapleton's song "Starting Over," she then added, "When nobody wins afraid of losing. And the hard roads are the ones worth choosing… Some day we'll look back and smile and know it was worth every mile." While the post may appear to be just another sweet tribute, it actually offers some clues on the timeline of Christina and Josh's love...

Unlike other shared universes on TV, crossovers are somewhat of a rarity among the NCISes. Yes, there have been two parters between NCIS and New Orleans in the past and smaller crossovers with Los Angeles, but when these happen, they tend to be memorable. Will that be the case with the March 28 event between NCIS and the newest spinoff, Hawai’i? The crossover was first announced in January, with NCIS‘ Wilmer Valderrama (Special Agent Nick Torres) and Katrina Law (Special Agent Jessica Knight) revealing they’d be heading to the island. And now that descriptions are out for the two episodes, we’re getting a better idea of what to expect and who else will be partaking. It all begins on NCIS at 9/8c, with “Starting Over,” and now we know that Hawai’i‘s Jane Tennant (Vanessa Lachey) doesn’t just have a past with Leroy Jethro Gibbs (Mark Harmon...

Few artists in the country sphere in the past two years have had the industry breakthrough Mickey Guyton has had. While Guyton didn’t come out of nowhere — she’d had a minor country radio hit in 2015 — the singer’s recognition skyrocketed in 2020, partially due to the Black Lives Matter movement and the country industry’s desire to spotlight more Black talent that had been wrongly overlooked for most of the 2010s. Guyton’s song “Black Like Me” received a lot of buzz, and it garnered Guyton her first Grammy nomination for Best Country Solo Performance in 2021. “Black Like Me” ultimately lost the award to Vince Gill’s heartfelt “When My Amy Prays,” but Guyton gets another shot to win this year – three shots, actually.

Chris Stapleton delivered one of the most powerful live performances of the 2022 ACM Awards when he sang his ferocious song of revenge “Watch You Burn.” Stapleton wrote the track, off his 2020 album Starting Over, as an open letter to the gunman who killed 60 country music fans at the 2017 Route 91 Harvest Festival shooting in Las Vegas. On Monday night, Stapleton sang the song onstage at Allegiant Stadium in Vegas — a short distance from the site of the massacre.

After successfully staging a safe and entertaining awards show last year, the Academy of Country Music sticks to what works and returns to Nashville for the 56th ACM Awards. Like in 2020, the ceremony scatters its musical performances over three iconic locations in Music City — the Ryman Auditorium, Bluebird Cafe, and Grand Ole Opry House — handing out trophies along the way.
“We’re excited to be back in Nashville. This is a great city that’s had a really rough year, even more of a rough year than other cities have had.

Can Luke Bryan win Album of the Year at the 2021 Academy of Country Music Awards for “Born Here Live Here Die Here”? He’s an underdog according to the combined predictions of Gold Derby users, but he’s backed by a couple of our Top 24 Users who got the highest scores predicting last year’s ACM winners.
The current front-runner in the race is Chris Stapleton for “Starting Over,” and for good reason. He has won Album of the Year twice before in just the last five years, for his breakthrough solo album “Traveller” in 2016 and his followup “From A Room: Volume 1” in 2018. Maren Morris and Chris Stapleton are the most nominated artists at the 2021 Academy of Country Music Awards, and they’ll also be the biggest winners, according to the combined predictions of Gold Derby users. But we think someone else will get the night’s top prize, Entertainer of the Year. Scroll down for our ACM predictions in 10 categories, listed by artist.
Morris is predicted to win four awards out of her six nominations. She’s the front-runner for Female Artist of the Year, where she’s the defending champion. She’ll face a tough challenge there from Miranda Lambert, though; Lambert has won the award a record nine times in the last 11 years. We’re also betting on Morris to best Lambert in two other categories: Single of the Year and Song of the Year, where her crossover hit “The Bones” has the advantage. Since Morris is a performer and songwriter on “The Bones,...

Just a few months after the 2020 Academy of Country Music Awards were delayed to last September due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the 2021 nominees have been announced. Maren Morris and Chris Stapleton lead with six nominations each. They’re followed by Miranda Lambert with five and Ashley McBryde and Thomas Rhett with four. Though those women earned multiple noms, there are zero women up for Entertainer of the Year, which at this point isn’t too surprising for the ACMs. Scroll down for the complete list of nominees, and find out who wins when the awards are handed out on April 18.

Chris Stapleton performed the country waltz “When I’m With You” on Wednesday night’s episode of The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon. The song, a solo composition by Stapleton, appears on the singer’s latest album, Starting Over.
Joined by his wife and singing partner Morgane in a darkened rehearsal space, Stapleton plays the song backed by his lean touring band plus Starting Over producer Dave Cobb on acoustic guitar. The band patiently lays back and follows Stapleton’s bruised vocals and lead guitar work, including a simple-but-solemn solo that arrives mid-song.

It’s been 41 years since Candice Bergen received her first Academy Award nomination for her role as Jessica Potter in the 1979 comedy “Starting Over,” opposite Burt Reynolds. Four plus decades later Bergen is back in the Oscar mix for her role as Roberta in “Let Them All Talk,” co-starring Oscar winners Meryl Streep and Dianne Wiest.
