Before there was “Rrr,” director S.S. Rajamouli had box-office smashes like the two-part “Baahubali,” which proved how adept he is at making hits. But among Indian audiences, there is a deep divide between those who applaud that the rest of the world is waking up to his brilliance and those who are horrified that a “dubba” — or hollow film — is being lauded.
I’ve heard it from my own Indian friends and relatives who have been reaching out to ask: what are they missing? Reports of viewers dancing at Hollywood’s iconic Chinese Theater to the Oscar-nominated song “Naatu Naatu” horrify these purists. But if you embrace what Rajamouli is doing, “Naatu Naatu” — which is not really the best song in Indian or Telugu films, or even in “Rrr” — has somehow captured the zeitgeist, just as the film itself has.
“Naatu Naatu” comes from the realm of “Tollywood,” i.e.

In memoriamViswanath’s social commentary and love for classical art are things that can be learned and borrowed, but his deft hand that manoeuvres all these threads into a single tapestry of cohesive beauty belongs to him alone.Courtesy: Wikimedia.Commons/ UttamdabiWhen you are tasked with writing about a man who is a true master at what he did, your hands hover over the keyboard, not knowing where to start. Ever since K Viswanath’s recent demise, social media has been filled with videos of scenes from his 50 films, most of which can be considered masterpieces depending on who you are asking. Viswanath had managed to create a filmography teeming with cinema that tries to teach, without shortchanging the viewer's expectations. You can see his reverence for art in films as early as Kalam Marindi (1972). Films like O Seetha Katha (1974), Siri Siri Muvva (1976), and Seetamahalakshmi (1978) had characters practising some form of art.

Spb It is difficult to believe that we will never hear that hearty voice again or see the twinkle in his eyes. But artists never die for they live on in their art.Sowmya RajendranClose to 15 years ago, when I was a cold and homesick graduate student in the UK, I remember sitting alone in my room and welcoming the New Year with Spb’s ‘Hiii everybody, wish you a Happy New Year!’ from Sakalakalavallavan. I only needed to listen to that booming, enthusiastic voice to feel my spirits rising. It may not be the same song for everyone, but there will be at least one Spb song that is capable of working this magic on anyone who is fond of film music. Sp Balasubrahmanyam recorded over 40,000 songs in 16 languages in a career spanning 54 years. That’s an average of close to 741 songs a year, two songs per day for every day of the year.
