Neil Young and Crazy Horse are about halfway through their North American tour, and there’s already a strong fan consensus that this is their best run in recent memory, perhaps even going back to the Nineties grunge era they helped kickstart. A big factor at play is the addition of guitarist Micah Nelson, who has deep respect for the material and an uncanny ability to emulate the distinct styles of both Danny Whitten and Frank “Poncho” Sampedro, his two main predecessors in the band.

Neil Young is an artist forever looking in two directions. He's currently focused on the future with his new band Promise of the Real, and also surveying his legacy as musician and filmmaker. It was the latter that brought Young to the Regal Theater in downtown Los Angeles for Monday's screening of Human Highway and Rust Never Sleeps, digitally restored and set for first-time DVD release.

On Monday night, Neil Young agreed to appear in “An Evening With Neil Young,” a special presentation beamed to movie theaters across America. He talked with Cameron Crowe about his 1979 concert film, “Rust Never Sleeps,” and a bizarre 1982 film he directed that co-starred two future cast members of “Twin Peaks.” To be clear: There was little if any public outcry for Young to revisit the latter film, “Human Highway,” about goofily charming people dopey enough to live in earthquake country in the shadow of a nuclear reactor. So why release it now? Because “Human Highway” changes everything we think...

Neil Young's surreal 1982 comedy Human Highway will finally get a nationwide theatrical release on February 29th. It will be paired with his 1979 concert movie Rust Never Sleeps and a Q&A with Young and Human Highway cast members Charlotte Stewart, Russ Tamblyn and Devo's Gerald Casale conducted by Cameron Crowe. Tickets for An Evening With Neil Young will be available on January 15th.
Human Highway tells the story of a group of regulars at a small-town diner/gas station, with a nuclear power plant accidentally triggering the end of the world.

The Alamo Guide
for February 26th, 2010
I’ve got to stop bitching about the weather. Last week I praised February, and then yesterday it snowed. Snowed. Whatevs. I’m over it.We were surprised earlier this week when we found out we’d be getting Roman Polanski’s newest thriller early than expected! The Ghost Writer opens Friday at S. Lamar and has Ewan McGregor’s dreamy face all over it, with Pierce Brosnan trying to kill that dreamy face. I think. I haven’t seen it yet! Cop Out also opens this weekend, and if you love 30 Rock as much as I do, you’ll probably go see it just for Tracy Morgan! Also, the red band trailer makes me giggle A Lot. Speaking of giggling inappropriately, it’s time for the return of Spike And Mike’S Sick And Twisted Festival Of Animation! Longest title ever! Grossest cartoons ever!

Soul power premiers at is released theatrically in the UK on the 10th July 209 Glastonbury festival 2:30am Friday (Saterday morning)
"In 1974, the most celebrated American R&B acts of the time came together with the most renowned musical groups in Southern Africa for a 12-hour, three-night long concert held in Kinshasa, Zaire. The pipe dream of musician Hugh Masekela and producer Stewart Levine, this music festival became a reality when they convinced boxing promoter Don King to combine the event with “The Rumble in the Jungle,” the epic fight between Muhammad Ali and George Foreman, previously chronicled in the Academy Award winning documentary “When We Were Kings.”
Soul Power is a verité documentary, entirely composed of footage shot in 1974 at the legendary music festival (dubbed “Zaire ’74”). It shows the experiences and performances of such musical luminaries as James Brown, Bb King, Bill Withers, Celia Cruz, Miriam Makeba, among a host of others.

- With the forthcoming releases of Control and I'm Not There - the folks over at Time Out (London) brought their collective of film and music critics together to chart the top films pertaining to music legend. The Top 50 list manages to make no mention of a recent Hollywood-ized bio-tales of Ray Charles and Johnny Cash (thank you!) and from the chunk of films that I have seen the positioning seems a propos. Todd Haynes' who has his Dylan creation coming out soon tops this list with one of my favorite films from the helmer in Superstar: the Karen Carpenter Story. Personally I would have found space another Da Pennebaker film in Depeche Mode 101 and Grant Gee's Meeting People is Easy - a brilliant Radiohead doc. Here's the top 50 list -1 Superstar: the Karen Carpenter Story (Todd Haynes, 1987)2 Don't Look Back (Da Pennebaker, 1967)3 Gimme Shelter (David Maysles/Albert Maysles/Charlotte Zwerin,
