It’s not often that we get time to speak with figures from the golden age of horror, so when we do, we can’t help but get carried away. Today, we have the distinct pleasure of presenting an exclusive interview with a beloved icon of the genre, Lauren-Marie Taylor. Best known for her unforgettable role as Vickie in the cult classic Friday the 13th Part 2, Taylor has etched her name into the annals of horror history by being part of one of the most important slashers of the 80s.
More recently, she has made a return to horror in the critically acclaimed film, In a Violent Nature, which hit UK screens just last week. Taylor’s return to the genre has rekindled the interest and excitement of classic horror fans from all over. We were lucky enough to get an extensive slot of time with Lauren-Marie – and too much...

It’s Friday the 13th, that special time of the year when flights are cheaper (thanks to our collective stupidity) and everybody celebrates the murderous exploits of Jason Voorhees. The iconic slasher first showed up, albeit very briefly, in 1980’s Friday the 13th, before later taking Manhattan, and eventually journeying to outer space, where he went on a Holodeck killing spree.
In addition to the roughly 5,000 Friday the 13th movies, Jason has also occasionally popped up here in the real world — not to disembowel horny camp counselors, but to sell stuff, like the time he visited his local RadioShack.
But no doubt the most famous of Jason’s promotional appearances was the time he guested on The Arsenio Hall Show. Yes, back on July 28, 1989, the late-night host welcomed Bo Derek, Ursula Andress and an axe-wielding undead monster.
Remaining in character for the entire interview, Jason didn’t say a word.

Will the industry draw the right lessons from this summer’s successes and failures?
It’s a tradition at the end of the summer to opine on lessons learned about what kinds of movies worked and why, and to extrapolate from that “what audiences want.” This focus is always too narrow and tries to prove too much. It also drives a mad chase after what worked or didn’t work in this season as markers for what will or won’t work in the future. Never mind that every movie is different, even ones carefully tailored to match the parameters of recently successful movies and to reassemble the same lucrative audience.
This leads to foolish generalizations – not least of which is that “shrinking audiences” mean that America is “overscreened.” Yet no one can tell you by how many. Where? Across the large swaths of the Great Plains and the South that powered “Twisters'” success?...

Fans have two questions about Owning Manhattan Season 2.
Is it happening? When is it coming out?
Netflix has struck gold more than once in the realm of high-end real estate reality television. Owning Manhattan was no exception!
And now, we’re happy to report that the show will be returning to the streamer – and we even have some news about the cast!

Owning Manhattan follows Ryan Serhant and his real estate agents at Serhant. Serhant (the person) of course starred for years on Million Dollar Listing New York.
Clearly a kindred spirit to Selling Sunset, this series follows luxury real estate properties in a place with more skyscrapers and much better weather: Manhattan.
Thus far, the show’s only critics seem to be folks who either don’t like reality TV...

Scarlett Johansson is herself a force to reckon with but even she felt a little nervous while working with the renowned director, Woody Allen. Known for films like Annie Hall, Manhattan, Midnight in Paris, and so on, Woody Allen has won four Academy Awards, 10 BAFTAs, 2 Golden Globes and so much more. All in all, he is a well-decorated filmmaker and it’s no surprise that actors would feel a little intimated in front of him.

Warner Bros. Animation and DC Studios announced a two-part animated feature based on Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons' iconic graphic novel, Watchmen, during last year's Sdcc, and the first full trailer is set to be released online at some point tomorrow.
The movies will utilize a CG animation style, with Chapter 1 set to debut later this year and Chapter 2 in 2025. The project has been described as "a leap forward for our DC Cinematic Animation."
The first trailer teased some key moments from the story that are sure to be familiar to fans of the comic - and Zack Snyder's live-action adaptation! There's no getting away from the fact that this looks a lot like the 2009 movie, which, to be fair, did also recreate numerous panels from the page.

“New York has a new problem,” declared the tagline for Friday the 13th Part VIII: Jason Takes Manhattan, complete with a picture of Jason’s hockey mask behind the city’s iconic skyline. To some modern readers, that tagline might seem silly. Sure, New York has its problems, but the arrival of a near-invincible, teleporting killer is orders of magnitude worse than anything currently happening in the Big Apple. Why would producers lump Jason Voorhees in with those other issues?
But when the movie released back in 1989, New York City existed in the popular imagination as a cesspool of violence, corruption, and danger. It was a nigh apocalyptic hellscape and promised to be a true challenge for the world’s most proficient killer of horny teens.
Sadly, it turns out that New York didn’t need to worry about Jason at all. Outside of a killer crane shot in Times Square,...

Diane Keaton has impressed the audience with remarkable performances in timeless classics like The Godfather, Manhattan, and Reds. She has quite the collection of awards to her name including some very prestigious ones and why wouldn’t she? She’s Diane Keaton, after all. Diane Keaton redefined the modern heroine in cinema and brought absolute authenticity to every character she set out to conquer.
A still from The Godfather (1972) | Paramount Pictures
One of the finest works of Diane Keaton’s career so far has got to be the 1977 film, Annie Hall, where she played the titular character. The actress’ performance was so raw and well-received that she went on to win her first and only Academy Award. However, she starred in yet another brilliant film in the same year that was equally deserving of the nomination and many fans believe that she should’ve won an Oscar for this film instead.

Watching Woody Allen's 1979 romantic comedy "Manhattan" in 2024 is certainly a fraught affair. For decades after its release, "Manhattan" was hailed as one of the filmmaker's best, frankly and stylishly telling a story of modern New York life, revealing the embarrassing impulses of a neurotic man struggling through his own acknowledged sexual and romantic weaknesses. In the film, Allen plays Isaac, a 42-year-old, twice-divorced comedy writer trying to pen a book about how much he loves New York City. As part of his midlife crisis, he is romantically and sexually involved with Tracy (Mariel Hemingway), a 17-year-old prep school student.
Allen's fictional relationship with an underage girl was, at the time, seen as a strange quirk of the modern cosmopolitan arts milieu, and many critics remained unconcerned. It wouldn't be for a few more years, in 1991, that details of Allen's personal life would begin to emerge. He married the much-younger...

How is it forty years since 1984?? Well, that’s just how time works, my friends. It was a time before mobile phones. Before the internet. Before we got worried about and then forgot about Y2K. It was the year in which George Orwell envisioned a world of doublethink, room 101 and Big Brother. And it was several years before Room 101 and Big Brother would come to mean TV shows and not dystopian ideals. But we digress…
Fortunately, the very nature of films is that the passing of time does not erode the quality of a classic movie, and even more fortunately, 1984 was absolutely packed with them.

The film also snuck in and ended up nominated for Best Animated Film at the 2024 Academy Awards earlier this year, but it didn't win. This fun 60-second video examines references in this movie that are inspired by other shots & scenes in other classic movies - including from Manhattan, The Wizard of Oz, The Big Lebowski, and Psycho. A story about friendship, its importance, and its fragility. The dialogue-free animated film is based on the popular graphic novel by Sara Varon, about the adventures and misfortunes of Dog and Robot in NYC during the '80s. Presented by Lisa Frankenstein, 1989 Week is dialing the clock back to the crossroads year for the genre with a full week of features that dig six feet under into the year. Today, Alex Divincenzo revisits the great slasher slump of 1989.
While horror fans often look back on the ’80s with a nostalgic glow, 1989 was not what most would consider a strong year for the genre — particularly when compared to the embarrassment of riches spawned by the rest of the decade. Not even Michael Myers, Jason Voorhees, and Freddy Krueger were safe from the slasher slump.
Each franchise had its ups and downs across a cumulative 17 movies in the ’80s, but the decade came to a close with low points — creatively and financially — in all three sagas: Friday the 13th Part VIII: Jason Takes Manhattan, A Nightmare on Elm Street 5: The Dream Child, and Halloween 5: The Revenge of Michael Myers.

Cillian Murphy first cut his teeth at the Corcadorca Theatre Company in his hometown of Cork, Ireland at the age of 20, where he nailed the audition for his first acting role in Enda Walsh’s “Disco Pigs” play. Murphy made enough of an impression to not only land the role for the theater part, but he also starred in the film adaptation years later. Although the movie wasn’t necessarily a renowned success, his performance caught the eye of Danny Boyle: the legendary filmmaker, then searching for a lead in his post-apocalyptic thriller, “28 Days Later.” That movie would significantly boost Murphy’s profile, earning him nominations for Best Newcomer at the Empire Awards and Breakthrough Male Performance at the MTV Movie Awards.

She loved life & never complained. Ever. She was nurse for 27 years, a wonderful sister to Steffi, Prudence and me, a devoted mother to Jason, who died in Iraq, Bridget and little grandson Kylor – the lights of her life.”
While never achieving the fame of sister Mia – or, for that matter, sister Prudence, who was immortalized by John Lennon in the classic 1968 Beatles White Album song “Dear Prudence” – Tisa Farrow nonetheless...

Robert Downey Jr. has taken the Golden Globe for best supporting actor in a motion picture drama for his portrayal of Lewis Strauss in Universal’s Oppenheimer. This was Downey Jr.’s fifth Golden Globe nomination and third win.
“Yeah, yeah, I took a Beta blocker so this is going to be a breeze,” a clearly exhuberant Downey Jr. began his acceptance speech tonight.” A sweeping story about the ethical dilemma of nuclear weapons grosses 1 billion dollars, does that track? No, unless and but because Universal went all in on Christopher Nolan, to direct Cillian Murphy with Emma Thomas producing with Emily [Blunt] and Florence [Pugh] and this cast and crew and helped them render a goddamn masterpiece.”
Downey Jr. also gave a shout-out to his agents, whom he referred to as his dueling career counsels. “They had the gall to say I needed to re-start my career, it’s so fun proving agents right.

Home Alone is a staple Christmas watch in most households, but did you know that one of the actors was the original director for Ace Ventura: Pet Detective?

The mythology for the long-running "Friday the 13th" film series has been notoriously shabby and amorphous. At the end of Sean Cunningham's 1980 original slasher, it was revealed that Pamela Voorhees (Betsy Palmer) had witnessed her developmentally disabled son Jason drown in Crystal Lake years earlier, largely thanks to the neglect of the boy's randy, sex-distracted counselors. Pamela set about getting madness-inspired spiritual revenge by murdering any new counselors who deigned to have sex at Camp Crystal Lake. Luckily, Pamela was killed before she could commit any more murders than she already did.
In Steve Miner's "Friday the 13th Part 2," however, it was revealed that Jason (Steve Daskewisz and Warrington Gillette) was still alive, living in the woods for decades, presumably unbeknownst to his mother. But Jason, it is revealed, knew his mother was killing people and witnessed the events of the first "Friday." Why, one will immediately ask,...

Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer sits at $942 million at the worldwide box office, which makes it the highest-grossing biopic of all time, but it’s a genre label that the director disputes.
Christopher Nolan recently spoke at a City University of New York event alongside producer Emma Thomas and Pulitzer Prize-winning author Kai Bird, who co-wrote the novel on which Oppenheimer is based. When asked why Oppenheimer doesn’t include aspects of the title character’s childhood, Nolan rejected the idea of the biopic.
“There is a tendency in biography post-Freud to attribute characteristics of the person you’re dealing with to their genetics from their parents. It’s a very reductive view of a human being,” Nolan said. “If you’re writing a book that’s 500 pages or 1,000 pages, there’s a way to balance that with their individuality and experiences. When you compress and strip down to the necessary simplicity of a screenplay,...

It’s been a decade since Chvrches first released The Bones of What You Believe. Now, the band is honoring their celebrated debut album with a 10th anniversary reissue, which features four previously-unheard songs and five live recordings from 2013.
“It feels quite strange that Bones is almost a decade old,” vocalist Lauren Mayberry said in a statement. “In some ways, it’s like it just happened, but also like that era was a lifetime ago. We are very grateful to all the fans who gave that album a special place in their heart, and still show us so much kindness today.”
One of the newly-unearthed songs is “Manhattan,” which was written right as that era from a “lifetime ago” was first beginning. As the band’s Iain Cook explained, it was the fourth song Chvrches ever worked on. “It was the first time we messed around with sampling and chopping up our vocals,...

In 1989, Friday the 13th transplanted its hockey-masked slasher from summer camp to concrete jungle for the franchise’s eighth installment, Jason Takes Manhattan. That titular promise was not fully delivered upon: Manhattan was mostly Vancouver and Jason spent much of the running time on a boat full of high schoolers traveling to the city. The newest Scream offers up a similar relocation as Ghostface follows the previous chapter’s survivors from Woodsboro to college. Again, a Canadian city (this time Montreal) stands in for New York. But this time, the killer actually spends the entire running time chasing his victims through […]

Zach Braff is opening up about falling under the spell of the manic pixie dream girl male fantasy.
The “Garden State” director has been criticized for perpetuating the trope most prominently in his 2004 directorial debut starring Natalie Portman. The manic pixie dream girl label refers to unconventional, one-dimensional female characters who ultimately ease the lead male character’s existential despair and change his perspective on life.
“I was just copying Diane Keaton in ‘Annie Hall’ and Ruth Gordon in ‘Harold and Maude,'” Braff told The Independent about crafting Portman’s character Sam. “Those were my two favorite movies growing up, and I was kind of taking those two female protagonists and melding them into Natalie Portman.”
Braff added, “Of course I’ve heard and respect the criticism, but I was a very depressed young man who had this fantasy of a dream girl coming along and saving me from myself,...

Directors Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett (Scream, Ready or Not) are back behind the camera for Scream VI, now playing in movie theaters nationwide.
In the brand new movie, “The Scream saga continues with the four survivors of the Ghostface killings as they leave Woodsboro behind and start a fresh chapter.”
That means we can expect themes and character arcs introduced in 2022’s Scream to deepen. With Bettinelli-Olpin and Gillett at the helm, that also means brand new Easter eggs and franchise nods nestled within the slasher thrill ride. The franchise, since its inception, revolves around its commentary and reverence for the horror genre, after all.
Bloody Disgusting spoke with the directors ahead of the film’s release. They explained that they couldn’t resist one of the more obvious references regarding their New York City set sequel: Friday the 13th Part VIII: Jason Takes Manhattan.

Ready Or Not co-directors Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett return for a fun-filled follow-up to their enjoyable 2022 reboot of the Scream series, in what is essentially a sequel to the requel. As such, the oh-so-meta, self-aware slasher franchise continues to be safe in their very capable hands.
This time round, in a nod to 1989’s Friday the 13th Part VIII: Jason Takes Manhattan (the theme music plays at one point), the action moves from Woodsboro to New York, as the self-dubbed “Core Four” survivors of the previous movie attend Blackmore College in the Big Apple. They include: Sam Carpenter (Melissa Barrera), whose father, Billy Loomis (Skeet Ulrich...

Plot: A year after the horrors that took place for Sam and Tara Carpenter, the creepy Ghostface returns to terrorize the siblings and their pals. And this time, it all takes place in the Big Apple.
Review: “What’s your favorite scary movie?” Most horror fans know who is calling when they hear that voice on the other end of the phone. And yes, Ghostface is back. Since its debut with the original Scream in 1996, it became a solid series of modern slasher fun. Let’s face it; when arguably the worst film in it is Scream 3, you aren’t doing too bad. Even that flick offered clever cameos and had wildly engaging sequences. And with last year’s revival giving audiences a couple of new leads with Jenny Ortega and Melissa Barrera, it still made for an enjoyable entry. What’s most impressive now is that the sixth film in this franchise,...
