This movie was set and filmed during the Rhodesian Bush War (The Second Chimurenga, The Zimbabwe War of Liberation, The Rhodesian War). This war went from July 1964 to December 1979. This movie was in release in many territories during the last six months of the war, but was also in first release in many territories in 1980, when the war was over.
The name of the rebel terrorist group was "The Popular Front".
"Z.A.N.U." stood for "Zimbabwe African National Union", while "Z.A.N.L.A." stood for "Zimbabwe African National Liberation Army". Also, the Rhodesian Special Air Service is also known by an abbreviated title, with an S.A.S. acronym, thereby calling it the Rhodesian S.A.S.
