In the dark world the Dceu inhabits, “Wonder Woman” has been seen as a bright light for the franchise. Making a box office killing and earning praise from critics and moviegoers alike, “Wonder Woman” pivots from what has thus far been expected of the DC universe. One of the more striking ways Patty Jenkins’ film does this is through the use of color.
A video essay by Patrick (H) Willems discusses just how the film so effortlessly, yet poignantly uses color to its advantage.

Selena Gomez was diagnosed with lupus about five years ago, and ever since, she's spoken openly about her journey living with the autoimmune disease. The 25-year-old attended the Lupus Research Alliance's Break Through Gala and took the stage to talk about the moment her doctors told her she might need a kidney transplant one day and how their diagnosis eventually became a reality. "Maybe I wasn't necessarily really good at knowing what that meant, so it actually got to a point where it was life or death," she said. "Thankfully, one of my best friends gave me her kidney and it was the ultimate gift of life. And I am doing quite well." In September, Selena revealed that she had a kidney transplant due to her lupus, after spending months out of the spotlight to recover. During her speech at the gala, Selena spoke about how hopeful she is that...

Mother-daughter relationships have always been the stuff of great drama. And the Oscars are no exception. Three decades ago the “Moonstruck” acting duo Olympia Dukakis and Cher both won gold for playing a strong-willed New York Italian mother and her feisty daughter. Six years later, as a mute Scottish teacher and her de facto interpreter in New Zealand, Holly Hunter and Anna Paquin repeated that twofer triumph with Jane Campion’s “The Piano.”
Onscreen mother-daughter conflict has resulted in other dual Academy Award nominations: selfless Barbara Stanwyck tricked Anne Shirley into marrying rich in tearjerker “Stella Dallas” (1937); Meryl Streep’s big mouth inspired a rebellious Julia Roberts in “August: Osage County” (2013); Piper Laurie was literally crucified by Sissy Spacek in “Carrie” (1976). At the start of this decade, Mo’Nique won an Oscar portraying the sexually abusive parent of fellow “Precious” nominee Gabourey Sidibe. Back in 1984, both Shirley MacLaine and...

It was a bromance for the ages -- Caleb Reynolds and Tai Trang found themselves back on the same tribe on Wednesday night's Survivor: Game Changers following the pair's dramatic separation after Reynolds' near-death heat stroke two seasons earlier on Koah Rong.
The pair's passionate reunion (symbolized by a sweet kiss on the cheek) on the new Mana tribe after an unexpected tribe swap, however, didn't last long, as Reynolds got the boot this week... after Tai voted him out.

Survivor is (almost) back -- and better than ever!
The hit CBS reality show premieres its 34th season -- and 500th episode -- on Wednesday night in a big way: with a set of castaways with more experience, more determination and more guts than perhaps we've ever seen. Only Et has an exclusive first look at Survivor: Game Changers.

No one is more dedicated to scaring you than Rob Zombie. With his penchant for slimy, grimy, and bloody grindhouse fare (his most recent album is “The Electric Warlock Acid Witch Satanic Orgy Celebration Dispenser”), the writer-director has returned to his roots with his seventh film, “31,” which follows a band of misfit carnies who are kidnapped and forced to play a deadly game on Halloween. IndieWire recently spoke with Rob about his role in the independent horror world, crowdfunding, and what 2016 movies he might be watching on Halloween.
I was really struck by how rich the film looked, and this was your first feature done via crowdfunding. Could you tell me a bit about how this process was unique for you, and how you were able to stretch your dollar on screen?
Well, it was partially crowdfunded. I wish it was 100% crowdfunded, but that just wasn’t possible. But the crowdfunding was very helpful.

For Dutch cinematographer Charlotte Bruus Christensen, shooting on 35mm film is all about capturing the authenticity of performance and setting. In “The Girl on the Train,” it enhanced Emily Blunt’s alcoholic voyeur who gets entangled in a murder mystery, and in Denzel Washington’s Oscar-contending adaptation of August Wilson’s “Fences” (a Christmas release), it sharpens the focus on the former baseball player’s struggle with the American Dream in ’50s Pittsburgh.
“Maybe I’m old-fashioned, but I can always find the reasons for why you should shoot on film,” Christensen told IndieWire. “It does a lot things. It’s not only the look and the texture, but it’s also the way you work, the way you focus.
“My biggest reason for shooting ‘Girl on the Train’ on film was because this is not a pretty story, it’s not a beautiful backdrop. We are on a train,...

“Sausage Party” may be a film about a hotdog that wants to have sex with a bun, but it still represents a watershed moment for Hollywood. The raunchy comedy that’s grossed $65 million after two weeks in theaters is the first R-rated CG animated movie. Co-written by Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg, “Sausage Party” has sex, violence and curse words in a format that has always been reserved for family-friendly fare.

The movie features the voices of comedic stars like Rogen, Jonah Hill, Kristen Wiig, James Franco and Paul Rudd playing anthropomorphized food items who discover their only reason for existing is to be eaten by humans. Directors Conrad Vernon (“Monsters vs. Aliens”) and Greg Tiernan (TV’s “Thomas & Friends”) have backgrounds in traditional animation aimed at children, but there’s nothing traditional about this deranged dark comedy.

Back in 2007, Seth Rogen and Katherine Heigl starred in Judd Apatow’s hit comedy “Knocked Up.” The film was well received and became a modern comedy classic, but Heigl quickly seemed to have second thoughts about it. She revealed in a 2008 interview with Vanity Fair that she didn’t like the way she was portrayed in the film and how it “paints the women as shrews,” while the men look “lovable,” further adding that “it was hard for me to love the movie.”
In a recent interview with Howard Stern, Rogen addressed the long-time feud and said that he was surprised by Heigl’s reaction, because he says their time on set was great and there were never any problems.
“I thought she hated us,” Seth told Stern. “We made a movie, I was very proud of it, it was critically very well received. Then we just heard that she...

Seth Rogen’s dark comedy “Sausage Party” hits theaters this weekend. The animated film tells the story of grocery store food finding out what happens to them in the real world where they are chopped up, boiled and cooked so they can be eaten by people. The film is rated R but it was first categorized as Nc-17 by the MPAA because of an eight-minute food orgy scene.
Rogen sat down with Howard Stern to discuss the film and what he had to cut to get the rating he wanted.
“There is a very sexually charged scene in the film, there is a pita bread with a scrotum,” he told Stern, adding that the lunch meat were involved in an orgy. “We probably added six things into the orgy that we were like, ‘Ok, these are like our sacrificial lambs.’”

Wgn America's latest original scripted series is a "Prison Break"- or "The Fugitive"-style thriller with a provocative twist: its protagonists are runaway slaves on the Underground Railroad, circa 1857. In the hourlong, 10-episode series, from co-creators Misha Green and Joe Polaski, an enslaved blacksmith named Noah (Aldis Hodge) organizes a small band of bondspeople and sets in motion a daring escape. Read More: "Can Wgn America's Stellar 'Manhattan' Finally Break Through?" Though escapees were a vanishingly small portion of the overall enslaved population in the antebellum U.S., the issue of "fugitive slaves," as the infamous 1850 law had it, assumed outsized importance in the years preceding the Civil War — and "Underground" is more invested in this mythic history than the nuances of the real one. (For the latter, Eric Foner's "Gateway to Freedom: The Hidden History of the Underground Railroad" is a...

"From Dusk Till Dawn" looked like a box office misfire for hot young filmmakers Quentin Tarantino and Robert Rodriguez when it was released 20 years ago this week (on January 19, 1996). But like the strip-club vampires who ambush the fugitive Gecko brothers, "Dawn" has proven surprisingly resistant to death.
Despite its modest ticket sales, the bloody film became a cult hit that spawned a theatrically-released making-of documentary ("Full Tilt Boogie"), two straight-to-video sequels, and a horror series on Rodriguez's El Rey cable channel that will soon begin its third season. More important, it gave George Clooney his first big break in movies after his TV success on "ER." It also marked the first full-length collaboration between Tarantino and Rodriguez, and gave Salma Hayek the most iconic scene of her career, as a snake-wielding table dancer/queen of the vampires.

More Matisse & Sadko is always a good thing. The Russian DJ/producers have been a joy to keep our eye on since their Martin Garrix collaborations, “Dragon” and “Break Through the Silence,” put them on the mainstream radar, and in the months to follow they’ve proven themselves capable of standing up on their own as a progressive house outfit.
W&W are the latest on a growing list to show Matisse & Sadko support – in this case, by premiering their upcoming track, “Lock ‘N’ Load,” on their Mainstage Radio podcast. The track speaks to the duo’s creative range as it kicks off with a heavy metal-reminiscent arpeggio in the minor pentatonic scale, and its aggressive electro house rhythm takes the place of their usual melodic synth stack crescendos.
Meanwhile, the duo have also teased an upcoming video – maybe for “Lock ‘N’ Load,” or maybe for yet another upcoming track.

This has been quite a summer for Matisse & Sadko. The Russian progressive house duo didn’t have to ride on breakout superstar Martin Garrix’s coattails with collaborations like “Dragon” and “Break Through the Silence” for long before they were flying high on their own merit with the clubby departure that was “Memories.” This go-around, they’ve teamed up with the all but unknown Vigel on “Tengu,” and it’s the best track that they’ve put out to date.
A dramatic downlift introduces the divine lead melody of “Tengu,” which first takes the form of sterile synth plucks before erupting into a grandiose crescendo of hoover synth stacks. An as-yet unidentified female vocalist holds a sustained note until the track drops into a menacing electro house rhythm that will undoubtedly send waves of motion out into the crowds surrounding speaker stacks at plenty more festivals before the season draws to a close.

It’s obvious by now that Martin Garrix really wanted to make the 2015 festival season count. The Dutch DJ/producer kicked things things off back in the spring with a massive Tiësto collaboration, and followed it up with a series of benchmark releases in the months to follow – and even as the season draws to a close, he’s fitting new material in wherever he can.
At Sziget Festival in Budapest, Hungary, Garrix premiered a progressive house ID that can be heard at 20:00 in the video above. Evoking much of the same emotion as his recent Matisse & Sadko collaborations “Dragon” and “Break Through the Silence,” the as-yet-unnamed track features an anthemic synth lead that soars over dramatic plucks and driving bass kicks before bridging into an icy piano melody.

We’re all for artists proving their versatility, and Matisse & Sadko‘s latest track accomplishes exactly that. The Russian duo have had a massive couple of months with two Martin Garrix collaborations propelling them into the mainstream orbit, and they appear eager to capitalize on that momentum by following those collaborations up with the debut of an unexpected original.
And indeed, “Memories” abandons the exhilarating main stage melodrama of “Dragon” and “Break Through The Silence” with a more back-to-basics deep/future house groove. Driven largely by soulful, pitch-shifted vocals and a reminiscent rave piano melody, the track still keeps much of the percussive elements of the progressive house anthems that have garnered the outfit attention recently, ensuring the song some measure of playability throughout the remainder of the festival season.

We’ve seen it so many times in wrestling history where guys are locked in midcard spots, then within a few years they go from the “Ringmaster” Steve Austin to the top guy “Stone Cold” Steve Austin. Triple H was a rich snob three years before he won his first WWE Title. It took a guy like Mark Henry 15 years to become a World Champion. Some get there faster than others, but if you hang around you just never know when your time might come.
If you look at the WWE roster as it sits right now, who are some of the guys that can be (to borrow an...

Funny Posters of Your Favorite Video Game Characters Trying to Break Through Condoms The only acceptable time when a broken condom is funny. by wesley bonner There's really nothing more bland or boring than American condoms. With so many innovative safe-sex products around the world, it's easy to lose your boner over the lack of creativity gracing your local Walgreens' shelves. But maybe you don't need bells and whistles to encourage you to practice safe sex. In fact, some would say the safer the sex, the sexier. Durex has created a brand of "extra safe" condoms, which are slightly thicker and contain extra lube. And while the uber-safe condom may not be as cool as, say, a spray on condom, Russian graphic designer Polina Bogdanova thinks she's got just the creative marketing strategy to help promote how unbreakable these condoms actually are. In [...]...

To begin, I will say that I have gone through many emotions as a wrestling fan in 2013, from elation to despair and everywhere in between. So is the life of wrestling fandom.
In the opening portion of 2013 we had Cm Punk as the WWE Champion, reaching the end of his lengthy reign that allowed him to announce himself as the “longest reigning WWE champion in the past 25 years”. He lost that belt, in the January, to the “returning for a tickle and a handshake” The Rock. Many fans were upset to see Punk lose so easily to the returning “great one” who had bulked up so much that the athleticism he showed throughout his full-time wrestling career had all but disappeared. The Rock then went on to have two more matches before leaving WWE again to focus on his flourishing movie career. Punk, following a failed attempt at a rematch...

The 2nd annual South Texas Underground Film Festival, running Oct. 3-6 in Corpus Christi, Texas, is a massive celebration of international alternative cinema, including plenty from Texas filmmakers, of course.
The fest opened on the 3rd with the drop-dead hilarious comedy Pictures of Superheroes by Austin filmmaker Don Swaynos.
But, there’s still plenty more to see throughout the jam-packed weekend wherein films screen from morning until, well, early into the next morning.
The film that’s absolutely not to be missed is the screening on the 6th at 10:30 a.m. of Savage Witches, the amazing celebration of the art of filmmaking by British directors Daniel Fawcett & Clara Pais. A colorful spectacle of multiple filmmaking styles, Savage Witches is a real joy to experience.
Also to be on the lookout for are on the 5th at 11:00 a.m. is the new rockin’ documentary Mondo Fuzz: Twilight of the...

It’s lucky 13 for the fun and fabulous Coney Island Film Festival! That’s right, 2013 will see the 13th annual edition of this New York City staple that combines the fine art of filmmaking with the rambunctious art of sideshow performing on Sept. 20-22.
The fest opens on the 20th with the documentary More Than the Rainbow, a profile of Matt Weber, an NYC cab driver who moonlights as an art photographer. The film is directed by Dan Wechsler.

Following England’s midweek draw in Montenegro, it could be viewed that their World Cup fate is still in their own hands. There were many positives to be taken from an impressive first half display, but as has so often been the case over the years, England ran out of steam in the 2nd period, and had to cling on for a point in a game in which they appeared to be in control.

Toldja! (Sorta). Last summer we dropped our list of 10 TV Stars Who Should Break Through To The Big Screen Soon and among them was "Parks & Recreation" and "Zero Dark Thirty" star Chris Pratt. And that's exactly what's happening as the actor has now bagged his first franchise. Deadline reports that after a somewhat long and tedious search, Pratt has landed the lead role in "Guardians Of The Galaxy." He's taking the role of Peter Quill, an alien-of-sorts who crash lands on Earth and is raised by humans. He eventually works at Nasa, gets sent to a space station, where he encounters Master Of The Sun, who names him the next Star-Lord. An insane number of people were linked to the part -- Joel Edgerton, Jack Huston, Lee Pace, Eddie Redmayne, Jim Sturgess, Garrett Hedlund, James Marsden, Sullivan Stapleton, Zachary Levi, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Michael Rosenbaum -- but it looks like Pratt won the day.

The trouble with reviewing a series is that, like it or not, you have to watch it. That’s not so much a problem for the reviewer perhaps, who has at least the satisfaction of seeing their words in print at some stage. But it’s maybe not quite so much fun for the Significant Other of the reviewer who, instead of watching important other stuff like Liverpool stuffing Everton in the Fa cup semis, has to spend an hour in the company of various hairy and scaly things and, adding insult to injury, put up with me drooling quietly every time Sacha Roiz or David Giuntoli appear on screen.

In the most recent bit of Swayzenews, a reboot of the classic surfing/bank robbing/Keanuing action flick Point Break has been greenlit. Alcon Entertainment, best known for the dubious honors of releasing The Blind Side and also prepping a spin-off of Blade Runner, has announced plans to fast-track a remake of Point Break through Warner Bros. Kurt Wimmer, best known for the actually pretty cool Equilibrium, the positively atrocious Ultraviolet, and more recent in-between efforts like Salt and Law Abiding Citizen, has written a screenplay that, like the first, involves an undercover FBI agent infiltrating a group of extreme sports fanatics who may or may not also rob banks. From the twisted mind behind some of the funniest, weirdest, cringe-inducing comedy of the last decade comes a new podcast channel born for Funny or Die.
At any given moment of the day, you can be in the front row of your own curated comedy club: Conan sidekick Andy Richter yukking it up with comedian-writer Paul F. Tompkins, for instance, or Patton Oswalt expressing deep disgust about well--does it matter? If you stick around, maybe you can elect Weird Al Yankovic to take the stage. It's all packed into a tidy podcast called Comedy Bang Bang hosted by Scott Aukerman, the master of comedic (and often excrutiating) experiments such as HBO's Mr. Show, mock-talk show series Between Two Ferns with Zach Galifinaikis and IFC's Comedy Death Ray.

The title of Lee Server’s acclaimed 2002 biography, Robert Mitchum: Baby I Don’t Care (MacMillan), offers a perfect encapsulization of the eponymous actor: a hard-partying Hollywood Bad Boy who didn’t give a damn what moralizing finger-waggers thought of him, or what his peers in the movie business thought, or the press, or even the public. He was going to go his own way and to hell with you, and anyone positioning themselves to make strong objection was just as likely to get a punch in the nose as shown the actor’s broad back. He worked hardest at conveying the idea that the thing he did for a living – acting – was also the thing he cared least about; an impression that may have been his most convincing performance.
The Bad Boy part of Mitchum’s reputation was honestly come by. As a youth, he’d been booted from more than one school,...
