- Tiny: [notices J.B.'s car coming down the road] I see a car.
- Jack Starkey: What color is it?
- Tiny: It's red.
- Jack Starkey: [aggravated] Damn it, can't they do anything right?
- Sweetwater: [to Hagen, who had joined the ambush] I don't know why you wanted in on this. You can't even see. Funny old soak.
- [first lines]
- Pap Hammer: Too much shine around here, Leroy. You'd better make a run into Springville tomorrow, sick engine or not.
- Leroy: Yes, sir, Mr. Hammer. Wish we could get old J.B. to drive for us, though.
- Pap Hammer: Eh, we don't butter the bread thick enough for J.B. Johnson.
- Dot Hammer: [Dot and J.B. are climbing out of the river to the shore after their car drowns] Why did you keep yelling at me like that?
- J.B. Johnson: Because I was trying to keep from doing what you did!
- Dot Hammer: Well, you made me nervous!
- J.B. Johnson: Well, you practically made me dead! Look, it ain't gonna be long before Starkey finds out that we're not at the bottom of that lake like fish food, you know?
- Dot Hammer: So what? The sooner, the better.
- J.B. Johnson: [grabs her arm] Listen, girl, we don't have much time. I'm going to town, I'm gonna get a truck, and we're gonna move that merchandise tonight!
- Dot Hammer: Is that so? Well, I ain't running!
- [starts to walk off]
- J.B. Johnson: [yanks off his drenched shirt] Well, then, you just do whatever the hell you want to do!
- [he throws his shirt into Dot's direction as he walks toward her]
- J.B. Johnson: I'm gonna be at the Candy Apple. Everything I got is tied up in that car.
- Dot Hammer: [sarcastically] Don't I know it?
- J.B. Johnson: [picks up his shirt] And what's that supposed to mean?
- Dot Hammer: [angrily] It means you can go back to your teenage nitwits anytime you want because I don't give a shit!
- J.B. Johnson: Oh, yeah? Well, let me tell you, I'll take a warm, loving teenage nitwit any day to a cold, old, dried-up maid like you!
- Dot Hammer: SHUT UP!
- [ready to hit J.B., but he resists it]
- J.B. Johnson: Makes out she's tougher than a man. No smiles, no laughs, no love.
- Dot Hammer: Shut up, you chicken shit!
- J.B. Johnson: Why don't you just admit it? You're scared of men! You hate men!
- Dot Hammer: Shut up!
- [she loses her balance and falls to the ground sobbing]
- Dot Hammer: I'm so tired of it. I can't do it by myself.
- [realizing that he went too far, J.B. kneels down to Dot and tenderly holds her head]
