When Tony Scott died in 2012, he left behind more than a few unfinished projects, including a remake of Sam Peckinpah’s iconic Western, The Wild Bunch.
L.A. Confidential screenwriter Brian Helgeland was attached to write the script for the remake of The Wild Bunch for Tony Scott, and he spilled a few details about the project while speaking with Inverse, including that it would have been set in the modern day.
“I also wrote 45 pages of The Wild Bunch for Tony to direct before he died. Sadly, I always say that I’m still on page 45 of that project,” Helgeland said. “It’s pretty violent and set in the modern day. The plot revolves around L.A. rampart cops that were being sent to prison, but during the trial, they’re still technically free. So, they decide to head down to Mexico and rob a bank before scattering to the...

Aaron Taylor-Johnson’s turn in Bullet Train has led to theories he’s going to play Bond next. But do actors who play Bond-like characters go on to actually play 007? We take a look.
At the time of writing, at least, there’s much speculation about Aaron Taylor-Johnson and his connection to the James Bond franchise. In March, a British newspaper with a big red masthead spread the rumour that the actor is secretly being lined up to play 007, taking over from Daniel Craig.
It’s a rumour so persistent that Taylor-Johnson has started to get a bit cross when ‘The Bond Question’ is brought up in interviews. When asked by an Associated Press reporter about the whole matter, Taylor-Johnson looked down at his feet, as though trying to repress some terrifying wellspring of anger, before abruptly marching off with a chirpy, “Alright, have a good one!”

As a result, The Equalizer will return with fresh episodes on Sunday, November 13.

“While the events of this story are fictional…These. People. Existed.” Thus begins Jeymes Samuel’s western “The Harder They Fall,” currently streaming on Netflix. The period picture is populated with 19th century Black icons including Nat Love (Jonathan Majors), a former enslaved cowboy, Mary Fields (Zazie Beetz), the first Black star-route mail carrier in the U.S., and Rufus Black (Idris Elba), the head of the ruthless multi-racial gang of bank robbers.
“The Harder They Fall” is the first major Western led by a Black cast since Mario Van Peebles 1993 “Posse.” The director, though, told the L.A. Times that “The Harder They Fall” shouldn’t be described as simply a “Black” Western. “It’s just a story about these people in their own world, just like ‘Rio Bravo” is a story about John Wayne and Dean Martin in their own world,” Samuel said. “These aren’t white Westerns or white movies,...

“Pipe Dreams”
By Raymond Benson
Back in 1973, producer Ely Landau and his wife Edie launched a daring and unprecedented cinema series that played in the U.S. for two “seasons,” with a total of fourteen titles (but only thirteen were shown), all renowned works—classic and modern—originally produced on the stage. It was called the American Film Theatre. (A review of a DVD box set of the entire series appeared on Cinema Retro previously. Click here to read.)
The concept tried something different. The directive was to take a great stage play, not change a word, and in most cases, use the actual play script as the screenplay. The next step was to hire an accomplished film director to interpret the text for the film medium but stay faithful to the play. Sometimes the director was the same person who helmed the original stage production. A further step was...

Herbert L. Kloiber, Former Tele Munchen Group Exec, Launches Night Train Media for High-End TV, Film
Herbert L. Kloiber, former managing director of Tele München Group, has launched a new media venture focusing on European film and series projects.
Munich-based Night Train Media is looking to develop, co-produce, finance and distribute in-house and third-party projects.
Speaking to Variety, Kloiber said it was the ideal time to launch the company “in this current golden age of television.” He is also keen to work with German broadcasters like Ard, Zdf, ProSiebenSat.1 and Rtl.
“The broadcasters now all have non-linear streaming services (such as) Mediathek, Joyn and TV Now growing into that space and they are great partners for setting up shows between European broadcasters and then allowing my company still to participate on the international distribution side rather than giving all the rights to one player worldwide,” he said.

With a moniker inspired by Bavaria’s heraldic lions, Leonine is a rare beast: a new German indie studio in the making.
After just a few months in existence, the company has positioned itself as a major player across film, television and digital, mainly through a raft of choice acquisitions, including film and TV giant Tele München Group. German media veteran Fred Kogel heads the operation, which is bankrolled by U.S. private equity firm Kkr and aims to take advantage of the changes roiling an increasingly globalized entertainment industry.
“In a world that’s very disruptive and where every consumer can watch any content on any device, there’s more need for content,” Kogel tells Variety in his first interview with an English-language news outlet. “Users don’t care where the premium content comes from. The most important aspect is that it delivers top quality in terms of story and production values.

Nent Studios Us is being established following Nent Group’s strategic investment in Feig’s production and financing vehicle Picturestart in May. It is in the process of hiring a CEO. Nent was one of the initial backers of the venture alongside Warner Bros, Scholastic and Endeavor Content.
Nent has been attracting international attention for its raft of originals with Hollywood stars. The Revenant and Mission: Impossible – Fallout star Kristoffer Joner is to front Swedish-Norwegian action thriller The Machinery for Svod service Viaplay.
The Nordic Entertainment Group-backed streaming service has ordered the eight-part series, to debut in 2020.
It is the latest original for the company, which is rapidly ramping up its slate of originals with A-list talent. In May, Deadline revealed that Brendan Fraser is to star in The Professionals, a loose remake of the Christian Slater-fronted action movie Soldiers of Fortune for the platform, and in March it signed up Shades of Blue creator Adi Hasak to create Margeaux, an international drama about the Munich Olympic massacre.
In The Machinery, Joner plays family man Olle, who wakes up on a ferry between Sweden and Norway with no memory of how he got there. What happened? Why is there a gun, a balaclava and a suitcase full of cash next to him?...

It’s not easy to land a Best Director Oscar nomination — even for a white man. Of the hundreds of filmmakers recognized by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences in nine decades, just 10 have been African American or women — which is why 2018 nominees Jordan Peele and Greta Gerwig are so rare. Not one black Best Director has won since John Singleton became the first nominee with “Boyz in the Hood” in 1991. Kathryn Bigelow is the only woman to ever take home a gold statue, for 2009’s “The Hurt Locker.” The only Asian director asked to accept top honors is Ang Lee, who prevailed for both “Brokeback Mountain” and “Life of Pi.”
Many great filmmakers have been nominated for their work outside of directing, including Tim Burton, Terry Gilliam, Sam Peckinpah, and Rob Reiner, but have never been invited to the Best Director party at all. Still more picked...

Grace Jones, the subject of Sophie Fiennes’ documentary Grace Jones: Bloodlight and Bami, which premiered Sept. 7 at Tiff, drew her first film-world blood with Arnold Schwarzenegger in 1984’s Conan the Destroyer.
In this sequel to the 1982 blockbuster Conan the Barbarian, Schwarzenegger was teamed up with basketball legend Wilt Chamberlain, Sarah Douglas (who had played Kryptonian villainess Ursa in a pair of Superman movies) and Jones. The Hollywood Reporter said the pairing made the film “a bit reminiscent of The Professionals mixed with The Wizard of Oz.” However, THR gushed over Jones, saying she “proves [to be] the movie’s...

With the question of who's playing James Bond in James Bond 25 unresolved, we look back at the casting conundrums 007 has faced before.
Since 1962, fewer men have played James Bond than have walked on the moon. Despite the relatively long turnaround of the role, the subject of who might follow in the footsteps of Sean Connery, George Lazenby, Roger Moore, Timothy Dalton, Pierce Brosnan and Daniel Craig in the future has fuelled many column inches and tabloid splashes.
It feels as if speculation about the seventh 007 in Eon Productions' long-lived spy franchise has been at fever pitch since this time last year, when Craig was doing the promotional rounds for Spectre and commented that he would rather “slash [his] wrists” than play Bond again. It's only after a year of constant reports on the subject that his far more optimistic comments at last weekend's New Yorker Festival...

Ground-breaking, intelligent, prescient 1970s drama Doomwatch, now out on DVD, is a British television classic...
Playing on the public's fear that 'this could actually happen', Doomwatch had a veneer of credibility unusual in the escapist television drama landscape of the late 60s/early 70s. This spring sees the most comprehensive haul of Doomwatch episodes released on DVD for the first time. The nickname for the "Department for the Observation and Measurement of Scientific Work", the series first appeared on BBC1 on Monday 9th February 1970 at 9.40pm. It followed half an hour of comedy from Kenneth Williams, which must have surely heightened its dramatic impact.
The series would run in tandem with the early Jon Pertwee era of Doctor Who; the first episode made its debut two days after part two of Doctor Who And The Silurians. The two shows undoubtedly shared a synergy of ideas - not to mention cast and crew.

We pay tribute to Brian Clemens, a screenwriter and producer whose work lit up 1970s cult TV and beyond...
Brian Clemens, who died earlier this week aged 83, was a highly respected screenwriter and producer both for TV and Film. He will chiefly be remembered for his work on The Avengers, The New Avengers and The Professionals but his credits were numerous and encapsulated a real golden age of cult, escapist television from the 1950s onwards.
Clemens was born in Croydon in July 1931. He spent his National Service as a Weapons Training Instructor. After spending time as a copywriter, he established himself as a scriptwriter - sometimes using the pseudonym "Tony O'Grady" - O'Grady being his mother's maiden name. He received his first commission from the BBC at the age of 24 - a thriller called Valid For Single Journey Only. He went on to write for many of the big TV...

To mark the release of The Professionals Mk1 on 31st March, we’ve been given 1 copy to give away on Blu-ray.
Bodie and Doyle need little by way of introduction, but if the series had at all escaped you since its debut in 1977, their boss George Cowley, head of CI5 couldn’t put it more succinctly than his opening gambit: “…anarchy, acts of terror, crimes against the public. To combat it I’ve got special men experts from the army, the police, from every service. These are The Professionals”. Featuring the perfect ensemble cast of Martin Shaw, Gordon Jackson (completely against type here) and the much-missed Lewis Collins, the series ran for 57 action-packed episodes and made an immediate impact on British and then international audiences, which has been sustained for 35 years. Painstakingly restored from the camera-original negatives, the series could have been made yesterday. No matter how many times you have seen The Professionals,...

Actor Martin Shaw talks about working with Polanski, the dumbing-down of his profession, and the death of his fellow Professional Lewis Collins
How did you become interested in acting?
It started at school. I didn't have a healthy attitude towards education: it took me a long time to work out that I was there for me, not for my teachers. There were only two teachers I could really respond to – one taught English, the other drama. When we were doing Shakespeare, it seemed crystal-clear.
What was your big breakthrough?
In 1968, I appeared at the Royal Court in the first major revival of Look Back in Anger (1). Then I starred in several other plays there. Roman Polanski saw one and offered me the role of Banquo in his film of Macbeth. Everything took off from there.
What have you sacrificed for your art?

Lewis Collins's greatest disappointment was his failure to get the James Bond role after Roger Moore
A tribute to Lewis Collins, the Mojo musician who became famous in the late 1970s as hit man Bodie in The Professionals, reveals that his greatest disappointment was not his decision to be a hairdresser rather than join the Beatles as a drummer but his failure to get the James Bond role after Roger Moore. Too aggressive, it was said, but really – since they chose cleft-chinned toff Timothy Dalton instead – they probably meant he wasn't smooth enough. Yet, as Ian Fleming said when he wrote to the Guardian in 1958 to defend his creation against encouraging a cult of luxury (eg choosing a brand of cigarette for its exclusivity rather than its taste), his James Bond was meant to be a blank sheet, an unobtrusive figure to whom exotic things happened. The personal style...

Actor who was both heart-throb and hardman as Bodie in The Professionals
In a 1980 episode of the hit British cop show The Professionals, an ill-advised villain tries to threaten the ex-mercenary William Bodie with his snarling doberman pinscher. After a brief altercation, Bodie, all sang-froid and minimally curled lip, inquires: "Would your little dog like to chew this electric fire? Or maybe you'll just leave."
This kind of butch badinage, along with rugged good looks, helped make Lewis Collins, who played Bodie in all 57 of the show's episodes from 1977 and 1983, and who has died aged 67 after suffering from cancer, into a household name. During that time he formed one half of Britain's answer to Starsky and Hutch, a crime-fighting duo called Bodie and Doyle who worked for a shadowy criminal intelligence agency, CI5, headed by Gordon Jackson's strait-laced George Cowley. At its height, The Professionals was watched by 12 million viewers a week,...

In the 70s and early 80s most little boys in the UK wanted to be wisecracking Bodie from The Professionals. One writer remembers being in awe of Collins' brooding action hero
I wanted to be Lewis Collins when I was a boy. I'd kick open the kitchen door with a water pistol in my hand, shouting at my mum to: "Get down on the ground, hands where I can see them!" This must have been quite annoying. She was probably wearing yellow Marigolds, for a start, which wasn't very villainous.
Two decades later, I got to interview Collins. It was only 15 minutes on the phone but I was still in awe. I'd been told he was a bit moody and didn't like talking about The Professionals any more, both of which proved untrue. He was charm personified, only too happy to reminisce. He also starred in producer Euan Lloyd's 1982 feature film Who Dares Wins about a daring Sas operation. He blazed across our TV screens as one part of The Professionals team in the 1970s, but Lewis Collins was more than just Bodie. So it’s sad to report that the star of stage and screen, has died at the age of 67.Collins, who was born in Cheshire, didn’t immediately embrace acting as a career. He started his working life as a hairdresser and played with various music acts including The Mojos before deciding to try his luck treading the boards. He trained at the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art and then segued into rep theatre in Chesterfield and Glasgow before a touring session with Prospect Theatre Company. His first TV break was in Z-Cars in 1974, which kicked off a run of guest star parts in a variety of other series. But in 1977, he got the role that he’d be best remembered for: tough nut copper Bodie in The Professionals.

Charismatic star of Polanski's Macbeth and Hitchcock's Frenzy
In the 1970s, it seemed a sure bet that the actor Jon Finch, who has died aged 71, would become a durable film star of some magnitude. He had the dark good looks, the voice, the charisma and the opportunities. At the beginning of his film career, he played the title role in Roman Polanski's The Tragedy of Macbeth (1971) and starred in Alfred Hitchcock's Frenzy (1972). Around the same time he was offered the chance to replace Sean Connery as James Bond in Live and Let Die (1973). The fact that Finch turned the part down stupefied many commentators.
That Finch never achieved the level of stardom that was anticipated may be attributed to his dislike of the kind of media publicity that goes with it and his self-proclaimed lack of ambition. "I never wanted to be a big star," Finch once said.

"Casino Royale" and "Green Lantern" director Martin Campbell actually first made his name in television, helming episode of '80s UK series like "The Professionals" and "Edge of Darkness." Read More: Martin Campbell to Direct a Reboot of British Sci-fi Series 'Blake’s 7' According to Deadline, Campbell will executive produce and direct the project, which is being written by "Mad Men" co-executive producer Chris Black. "Coup" is about an American man who pairs up with a mercenary to get his wife back after she's taken hostage in an overseas coup. Deadline describes "Coup" as a...

From our exclusive feed with Cult Labs we have some exciting news on Arrow's 2012 slate with 4 new titles announced for a March 2012 release. And what a gloriously eclectic mix it is, with a reassuringly (for me, anyway) strong showing from the Brits. There's cult Sas heroism, Moore, Burton and Harris shooting baddies, a trashy creature feature and a sleazy video nasty. Read on for the official notes, and check out some artwork below...Who Dares Wins (Arrow Video) The 60 Second War Begins Now! Paranoia, black ops and espionage combine in Who Dares Wins, a violent and edgy anti-terror classic starring Lewis Collins (The Professionals) and Edward Woodward (The Equalizer). The anti-nuclear movement is plotting a bloody outrage on British soil and, having already fatally lost their undercover operative...

It’s time for another update from our friends at Arrow Video, this time previewing their March 2012 releases which encompass sleazy horror, cult British action movies and gory, cheesy sci-fi… The highlight for me in March’s releases? Definitely has to be Don’t Go In The House.
Who Dares Wins (Arrow Video)
The 60 Second War Begins Now! Paranoia, black ops and espionage combine in Who Dares Wins, a violent and edgy anti-terror classic starring Lewis Collins (The Professionals) and Edward Woodward (The Equalizer). The anti-nuclear movement is plotting a bloody outrage on British soil and, having already fatally lost their undercover operative at a violent protest, the secret services call on the aid of the Sas. Captain Peter Skellen (Collins) risks his career, his family and his life to infiltrate the terrorist group before they can unleash an attack that will devastate the country. Relive a classic cold war...

Film director whose work included the wartime masterpiece Western Approaches
The director Pat Jackson, who has died aged 95, was best known for the semi-documentary war film Western Approaches (1944). This neglected classic – a feature-length portrait of the Battle of the Atlantic – was shot under the auspices of the Ministry of Information's Crown Film Unit and predominantly filmed at sea under hazardous conditions. The shoot's logistical nightmares were compounded by the vast size of the Technicolor camera. Jackson himself devised the story of the imminent convergence of a German U-boat and an English ship which is on the way to save a group of comrades in a lifeboat.
Jackson was in his late 20s when he shot Western Approaches with the outstanding cameraman Jack Cardiff and a cast of amateur actors. It was a remarkable achievement that remained unsurpassed throughout the writer-director's lengthy career. The film was well received in Britain and...

Tom Hardy, Gerard Butler, Jason Statham, Liam Neeson and Gary Oldman are the professionals! You have no idea what we’re talking about? Well, guess what, it looks that UK television show from the 70s, titled The Professionals is getting a remake!
Or, if you prefer, it’s getting turned into a movie. And what a movie that will be with this kind of cast on board? Judge yourself!
Ok, ok, nothing is confirmed at this moment, but it sounds interesting to know that Lionsgate UK is reportedly eyeing Tom Hardy, Gerard Butler and Jason Statham to play the secret agents Bodie and Doyle, while Liam Neeson and Gary Oldman are being eyed to play their boss.
So, yes, that (unfortunately) means some of them will get the part, and no, they’re (unfortunately) not all going to be in the movie, but you must admit that it will be a difficult decision indeed!
