Roy Mobey was the redneck long-time sheriff of Clinton Corners, Georgia, who was assigned a college-educated, New York City-trained Black sergeant named Curtis Baker as his second-in-command. Despite differences in race, culture, and education, the two men were able to work together in (relative) harmony. Other officers were Jasper, Cloris, and Harley, while Burnside was the town's weak-willed mayor.
