Welcome to The B-Side, from The Film Stage. Here we usually talk about movie stars and not the movies that made them famous or kept them famous, but the ones they made in between. Today, however, we talk about Oscar movies (!), or better yet, movies that remind us of Oscar movies!
Conor and I welcome back the lovely Joe Reid & Chris Feil of the This Had Oscar Buzz podcast. In today’s episode, we each choose a movie that reminds us of a current Best Picture Oscar nominee.
The movies include Born to be Blue, The Ant Bully, The Ritz, and Frankenstein Created Woman. We also take a good few minutes to dish on legend Barbra Streisand’s incredible autobiography My Name Is Barbra.

Feud: Capote vs. The Swans has honored the late Treat Williams with a touching tribute.
The card, which read “In Memory of Treat Williams 1951-2023”, appeared at the end of last night’s episode of Ryan Murphy’s FX anthology series. You can see it below.
Williams portrayed former CBS head and media tycoon Bill Paley in the series, an adaptation of Laurence Leamer’s bestselling book Capote’s Women: A True Story of Love, Betrayal, and a Swan Song for an Era. The series chronicles the literary scandal that sparked a fallout between writer Truman Capote and a high-society group of women, known as his “Swans.”
Feud was Williams’ final role. The veteran actor had wrapped production shortly before he died in a tragic motorcycle accident on June 12, 2023 in Dorset, Vt. He was 71.

[This story contains spoilers from episode eight, season six of The Crown, “Ritz.”]
Throughout her lifetime, Princess Margaret, Countess of Snowdon, was known for being a glamorous socialite — a persona that actress Lesley Manville brings to life in the final two seasons of Netflix’s The Crown.
Yet in episode eight of the sixth and final season of the series, audiences got a glimpse of “not the dazzling, but the dutiful” younger sister of Queen Elizabeth II (Imelda Staunton) who, in a speech, describes her as, “My lifelong companion and support without whom it would be unimaginable.”
The declaration, which comes at Margaret’s 70th birthday party, as depicted in the fictionalized Netflix drama, reinforces the tight-knit relationship between Lilibet and Margaret that’s been threaded throughout the series’ six seasons. It also foreshadows the imminent separation of the two, as Margaret’s health begins to decline after suffering a series of strokes.

With more than 80 years of acting under her belt, Rita Moreno has done her share of work in Hollywood and has shelves worth of awards to show for it. The 91-year-old Puerto Rican actor is perhaps best known for playing Anita in the original West Side Story, but has a breadth of experience that few actors can measure up to.
Aside from her acting accomplishments, Moreno was romantically linked with the likes of Marlon Brando and Elvis Presley, to name a few. However, from time to time she still has to prove who she is — especially when she’s riding public transportation in New York City.

Rita Moreno celebrates her 90th birthday and a new remake of ‘West Side Story’ from Steven Spielberg
Rita Moreno celebrates her 90th birthday on December 11. As luck would have it, that’s just one day after the Steven Spielberg remake of “West Side Story” opens nationwide. She won an Oscar as a supporting actress for the original almost 60 years ago and now returns in a new role and as executive producer.
Few performers have had such a varied and successful career as this dynamic triple-threat. The talented actress, singer and dancer is one of only 16 artists to achieve Egot status and one of 23 to achieve the Triple Crown of Acting and one of only two people (with Helen Hayes) to accomplish both.

Moreno was born in Humacao, Puerto Rico in 19831 and moved with her mother to New York City as a small child. By the age of 13, she had her first Broadway role and, before long, she and her mother headed to Hollywood.

For the 2021 Power of Women issue, Variety spoke with several women in the entertainment industry who are using their voices to benefit worthy causes. For more, click here.
Rita Moreno may be turning 90 in December, but the actor dreads the thought of being typecast as a woman over a certain age.
“Why should I have to play a grandmother simply because I’m old? Can I be a lawyer? A scientist? So far, the answer is … not so much,” she says wistfully. “Hollywood suffers in a profound way from ageism.”
Moreno has made a career — one that spans seven decades of memorable stage and screen roles in “Singin’ in the Rain,” “The Electric Company,” “The Ritz” and “One Day at a Time” — out of defying expectations and breaking barriers. In 1961, she became the first, and still only, Hispanic woman to win an acting Academy Award, for her turn as Anita in “West Side Story.

‘Rita Moreno: Just a Girl Who Decided to Go for It’ Film Review: Documentary Honors a Showbiz Legend
This review of “Rita Moreno: Just a Girl Who Decided to Go for It” was first published at the film’s premiere at the 2021 Sundance Film Festival
For Puerto Rican goddess Rita Moreno, one of the greatest performers — Latina or otherwise — ever to devour our screens with her scintillating talent, the measure of that greatness rests in her career longevity running parallel with integrity. The pedestal of hard-earned success from which she now gazes at Hollywood and its perfidious antics was, at least in the early years, built on perseverance amidst dissatisfaction.
Director Mariem Pérez Riera’s definitive documentary on everything that has colored Moreno’s worldview in nearly nine decades, “Rita Moreno: Just a Girl Who Decided to Go for It,” opens with the dazzling, and often deceiving, glory of her trophies and accolades as she prepares for a Cuban-themed birthday party. “Hey you guys!!!” And at the risk of either being non-inclusive or sexist, “you gals, too”! There’s a new feature-length documentary arriving in theatres this weekend that certainly breaks the preconceived notions of what many consider “film homework”. Yes, there are a considerable amount of “talking heads”, but the movie is far from “dull and dry”. Now, that’s due in large part to the doc’s subject matter (hence all those “talkers” on camera). This is a prime example of this film genre’s popular “subset”, the “show biz” documentary. Last year saw two great entertainment profiles on the Go-Go’s, the Bee Gees, and Natalie Wood. Now, this look at the life and career of one of the latter’s co-stars will no doubt earn similar accolades this year (along with another out today). Speaking of accolades, this lady’s amassed so many, even joining the elite group known as EGOTs.

Rita Moreno’s most indelible screen moment, which had her and a “West Side Story” ensemble sizing up the pros and cons of their adopted U.S. homeland, remains an eternally clever musical argument over whether “America” is a dream or nightmare for immigrants, settling in at a 50/50 split. The balance is skewed more along the lines of 80/20, in favor of dream, for the star herself in “Rita Moreno: Just a Girl Who Decided to Go for It.” Premiering at Sundance, the documentary from the theatrical wing of “American Masters” cheerfully jumps from one heartening career reinvention to the next, with sobering lulls to ponder what an even more prolific filmography she might have had without profligate racism and sexism standing in her path.

In the past decade or so, Rita Moreno has received multiple lifetime achievement awards, and would probably receive even more — except that she’s too busy working.
The actress, who turns 89 on Dec. 11, is one of the few people to win an Egot: Emmy, Grammy, Oscar and Tony. But she has no intention of resting on her laurels. In “Rita Moreno: A Memoir,” she expresses frustration at not working more. “I still feel that way!” she told Variety shortly after the book came out in 2013. She is always busy: If it’s not film, “I do theater, I do television, concerts, I do talks, lectures, I do a lot of fundraising as a performer.”

The New York theatre community is normally all abuzz in June. The Tony Awards provide excitement at the start of the month, warm weather brings in major tourist dollars, and New Yorkers collect their rainbow studded Playbills to celebrate Pride. But the coronavirus had different plans for June of 2020: Broadway is shuttered, the Tonys are indefinitely postponed, and new safety measures have cancelled Pride events worldwide. So thank the theatre gods for the tonic that is the American Masters documentary “Terrence McNally: Every Act of Life.”
Terrence McNally sadly passed away in March due to complications from Covid-19, so it is only fitting that the life story of this pioneer playwright should roar loudly during Pride month. The film was completed before his death, with a premiere at the Tribeca Film festival in 2018. The documentary now reaches a wider audience with a celebratory Pride airing on Sunday June 14th,...

Singer-comedienne Kaye Ballard, who starred alongside Eve Arden in the 1960s sitcom “The Mothers-in-Law” and was among the stars of the 1976 feature based on Terrence McNally’s farce “The Ritz,” died Monday in Rancho Mirage, Calif. She was 93.
She had recently attended a screening of a documentary about her life, “Kaye Ballard: The Show Goes On,” at the Palm Springs Film Festival, according to the Desert Sun, and became ill soon after.
Ballard’s career spanned stage and screen, and she was a star on Broadway when she was paired with Arden as neighbors whose kids get married on “The Mothers-in-Law,” which ran on NBC from 1967-69 and later in syndication.
On the show Ballard played Katherine “Kaye” Josephina Buell, the overly emotional wife of Roger Buell (played by Roger C. Carmel) and overprotective mother of Jerry Buell (Jerry Fogel). She was an unenthusiastic housewife, frequently spoke in Italian, and...

2017 was one of the few banner years for queer film at the Oscars. “Call me by Your Name” was a Best Picture nominee and took home the Adapted Screenplay award. “A Fantastic Woman” won Foreign Language Feature and in doing so, became the first film with an openly transgender performer in a lead role. Cinemas in 2018 have been home to a plethora of Lgbt themed movies that could make for the gayest Oscars yet. As Lgbt History Month draws to a close, let’s take a look at this year’s crop of queer contenders.
The highest profile Oscar contender about queer life is “The Favourite.” The period film features Olivia Colman as a devilish Queen Anne, with Rachel Weisz and Emma Stone jockeying for her attention. The performances have captured major attention, having already landed a win for Ensemble Performance from the Gotham Awards. Colman claimed the Best Actress prize at Venice,...

Few if any living playwrights have been as successful for as long as Terrence McNally. “Every Act of Life” provides a predictably starry, rather standard, but satisfying overview of a prodigious career that is still going full-steam as the writer nears his ninth decade. It may require posterity to deliver a film that really weighs McNally’s influence, strengths, and weaknesses as a dramatist; Jeff Kaufman’s feature is more of a biographical valentine, aimed squarely at fans already somewhat knowledgeable about the subject’s life, works, and times. It should play well wherever such aficionados can be found — which is to say, anywhere Broadway and gay theater have a loyal base.
Opening with footage of McNally receiving a Tony — one of four won so far — for “Master Class” in 1996, this straightforward bio then backtracks to the start of a strictly chronological hagiography. Our protagonist traces lifelong “feelings of not...

Essential viewing for theatre lovers, Every Act of Life which had its World Premiere at the 17th Tribeca Film Festival, is a tribute to the continuing career of multiple Tony-winning playwright Terrence McNally. His groundbreaking inclusion of layered gay characters and openness about his own sexuality made him stand out among his contemporaries such as Edward Albee, with whom he had a relationship as the film explores.
One of the film’s strengths it that although it is a loving portrait, it allows its contributors including Nathan Lane and Christine Baranski to discuss less flattering aspects of their experience of working with McNally as well as honouring him. The playwright himself is forthright about his own struggles with alcohol and recounts a memorable run in with screen legend Lauren Bacall at a Sondheim house party when he spilt a drink on the her. We also hear both sides of an...

Can Rita Moreno make an Emmy comeback for “One Day at a Time” after a 35-year absence from the awards? As the wise-cracking grandmother of a Cuban-American family living in Los Angeles, CA, Moreno has the kind of showy supporting role that brought Emmys to Estelle Getty (“The Golden Girls”), Rhea Perlman (“Cheers”) and Megan Mullally (“Will & Grace”), who could actually return herself this year for that show’s revival. And given that her Netflix series is a reboot of a 1970s sitcom from Norman Lear, whose hit shows “All in the Family,” “Maude,” “Good Times,” “Sanford and Son,” “The Jeffersons,” and “Mary Hartman, Mary Hartman” made him King of the Emmys that decade, it would almost feel like a done deal, right? Well, almost.
The Egot recipient was widely expected to reap a Best Comedy Supporting Actress nomination for the show’s first season in 2017, but was snubbed.

The playwright Terrence McNally, who turns 75 next month, is not only prolific but prolific in many genres. His catalogue, spanning 51 years, includes Broadway comedies like The Ritz and dramas like Master Class, the books for five Broadway musicals, and dozens of uncategorizable works, like Corpus Christi and A Perfect Ganesh, that began their lives off Broadway and beyond. Some have been sublime, some duds, most in between; their reception, too, has run the gamut. (He’s received four Tony awards but also this hideous Time review of And Things That Go Bump in the Night in 1965: “One of those off-bleat stupefactions that make the modern stage look like the queerest wing of a nuthouse.”) So when he writes about the theater, as he does in It’s Only a Play — an Off Broadway comedy from 1986 that has just made it to Broadway in a revised edition —...

One of the rare EGOTs -- a winner in the Emmys, Grammys, Oscars and Tonys -- Rita Moreno still "has it."
The veteran talent left no doubt upon accepting the Life Achievement honor Saturday (Jan. 18) at the 20th Annual Screen Actors Gulld Awards, regaling the audience with humor, song and even a touch of profanity in her speech.
Presenter and longtime Moreno friend Morgan Freeman opened the tribute by noting her varied performing gifts, adding that she "broke through racial and sexual barriers" professionally, with her human-rights activism also noted in a filmed profile that offered clips from projects as diverse as "West Side Story" and "The Ritz" to TV's "The Muppet Show" and "Oz."
As Freeman -- with whom Moreno had appeared on "The Electric Company" -- then took "greater than great pleasure" in inviting Moreno up from her seat, she jogged around the stage and raised her arms in victory.

Rita Moreno received the Life Achievement Award at the 20th Annual Screen Actors Guild Awards on Saturday, Jan. 18.
If you didn't know, Moreno is only one of eleven EGOTs -- she's received an Emmy, Grammy, Oscar and Tony. She won an Oscar as Anita in "West Side Story," Emmys for "The Muppet Show" and "The Rockford Files," a Tony for "The Ritz," and a Grammy for best recording on "The Electric Company."
There are only 11 EGOTs. And as far as we know, she's the only Egot to have sung with Animal.

Rita Moreno high-kicked, sang and acted her way into the pantheon of performers to become one of only nine living Emmy, Grammy, Oscar and Tony winners.
She won an Oscar as Anita in "West Side Story," Emmys for "The Muppet Show" and "The Rockford Files," a Tony for "The Ritz," and a Grammy for best recording on "The Electric Company."
But it's Moreno's less flashy work, as a mensch, that has her colleagues bestowing their top honor: the Life Achievement Award at the 20th Annual Screen Actors Guild Awards, airing live on TNT and TBS on Saturday, Jan. 18.
In an hour-long interview with Zap2it, Moreno, 82, talks about her volunteer work and career that took her to Broadway at 13, and to movies, where she never landed the sort of roles she knew she could do.

Anne Marie here with some happy news: It's Rita Moreno's birthday! The Puerto Rican showbiz legend has a list of awards as long as her gorgeous legs, and soon she's going to add to it! As Nathaniel reported earlier, the Screen Actors Guild is adding the SAG Lifetime Achievement Award to her much-deserved accolades in January.
In addition to being the third Triple Crown winner (Emmy, Tony, Oscar) and one of twelve Egot winners (Emmy, Grammy, Oscar, Tony), Rita Moreno has had an absolutely fascinating career for its depth and diversity. She's said that her success in West Side Story was actually a double-edged sword, after winning an Oscar in 1962 for her firey performance as Anita, most of the film roles offered to her were as the token minority. As a result, she refused to appear in film for another seven years. Moreno instead turned to television and theater.

Former gay porn star Marc Anthony Donais has been convicted of attempted murder in California after attacking his ex-girlfriend with a porcelain toilet tank lid.
Donais, a one-time Playgirl centerfold who acted under the name Ryan Idol, faces 15 years behind bars when he is sentenced in December.
In court in Sacramento on Tuesday, the actor's attorney insisted his client acted in self-defence during a fight.
The victim told the court that Donais had told her he wanted to kill her after showing up at her apartment days after she split from the ex-porn star.
Donais testified he drove to his ex's apartment to check up on her - because he was concerned she was mixing with some drug-dealing friends.
He told the court his girlfriend became upset when he accused her of cheating on him, and he swung the toilet lid at her when she came at him with a knife.
After his porn career, Donais became a hit on Broadway and starred in the 2007 revival of Terrence McNally's The Ritz.
