Despite standing less than five-feet tall, Danny DeVito is a giant of the entertainment industry. With literally dozens of credits to his name, DeVito has towered over the film and TV worlds through sheer force of his talent for more than half a century, with no signs of slowing down. While he has made his name and earned his fame as an actor, he's also an accomplished director and a prolific producer. Heck, he has credits for screenwriting, editing, and even soundtracks! DeVito's a cinematic "Renaissance Man," and not just because he starred in a 1994 comedy with that name.
Despite DeVito's gargantuan cinematic contributions, this multi-talented, multi-hyphenated filmmaker has never won an Academy Award, and has only been nominated once, for producing "Erin Brockovich." Yet even while watching his buddies Jack Nicholson and Michael Douglas roll in gold, DeVito stays in good spirits, because that's the guy he is. Well,...

Sebastian Stan would have been a different man if not for Marvel.
The actor recently told Vanity Fair that before being cast as Bucky Barnes in 2011 MCU tentpole feature “Captain America: The First Avenger,” his career was basically at a standstill. At the time, Stan was financially relying on residuals from 2010 comedy “Hot Tub Time Machine.” Stan played an ’80s frat jock who is the ski lodge villain of the film.
“I was actually struggling with work. I had just gotten off the phone with my business manager, who told me I was saved by $65,000 that came in residuals from ‘Hot Tub Time Machine,’” Stan said about how his career was going before he was offered the Marvel role. More than a decade later, and Stan is still in the MCU: The actor is leading “Thunderbolts,“ which will usher in Phase 5 of the franchise.

Jack Nicholson has been in retirement for a while now. Taking a cue from the title of the last movie he appeared in, 2010’s “How Do You Know,” how do we know? When I talked to Nicholson for this reunion with director James L. Brooks – an unfortunate flop – I asked him why he waited three years to do another movie after his hit, “The Bucket List.” His response: “I’ve been reading scripts. Yes, they are all very similar. You just keep getting these stories about retirement, or the wife dying on you or going to Vegas. I’m definitely at the stage where I just don’t want to make another movie.”
Let’s then applaud this Oscar kingpin, who still holds the record among men for the most nominations and shares most wins (three) for a male actor with Daniel Day-Lewis and Walter Brennan. His victories were for...

The talented cast of “The Pitt” includes a number of actors whose parents are also in the business. While Taylor Dearden and Fiona Dourif might, technically be considered “nepo babies,” they have more than proven themselves to be as hardworking as their emergency room characters in the hit drama on HBO’s Max.
Here is who’s related to who and where else you might have seen them before this. Some, like Dourif and Isa Briones, who plays Trinity Santos, have even acted alongside their famous family members.
Taylor Dearden
The 32-year-old actress, who plays resident Mel King on the series, is the daughter of “Breaking Bad” star Bryan Cranston and actress Robin Dearden, whose TV credits include appearances on “Murder, She Wrote,” and the soap opera “Generations.” She previously starred on Netflix’s “American Vandal,” MTV’s “Sweet/Vicious” and Apple’s “For All Mankind.”

The Cannes Film Festival will reveal its 2025 lineup on Thursday morning European time and expectations are high for a typically bountiful lineup of starry fare and arthouse treats. Cannes remains the Super Bowl for indie film lovers.
It’s always a nervous waiting game for those connected to Cannes hopefuls. Multiple festival regulars have told us that selectors are later than ever in giving them notice. The festival has often announced a major movie or two by now, but not this year. The identity of Juliette Binoche‘s fellow jury members are still also under wraps.
In terms of films in the running, much of the reporting we did in February in our Cannes and Venice prediction piece has either come to pass or is shaping up as we forecast. You can read that story here.
Tom Cruise’s Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning remains the most likely big Hollywood studio splash.

While fans of “E.R.” may find solace in the new hit medical drama “The Pitt,” which features much of the same talent behind the previous show, including lead Noah Wyle, the one piece that differentiates the two is the use of A-list actors for guest stars. Everyone from Red Buttons to Kristen Dunst guest-starred in “E.R.” at one point, but “The Pitt” instead chooses to focus primarily on its cast of doctors and nurses. However, that changed with this past week’s Episode 14, as “The Pitt” saw legendary character actor Brad Dourif appear as father to Dr. Cassie McKay. To add a special wrinkle to the proceedings, Dourif is the actual father of the actress who plays McKay, Fiona Dourif.
“My suspicion is that it was Noah Wyle’s idea,” said the younger Dourif in a recent interview with Variety. “He has talked to me about my dad...

The rebranded Fathom Entertainment, which has been gobbling up an increasing share of box office, has set special anniversary presentations of Clueless, Rocky IV, One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest, The Sound of Music, Sunset Boulevard and more for its annual Big Screen Classics series, following a bang with The Goonies in January for that film’s 40th anniversary.
Since Covid, repertory has exploded as a staple of theaters.
Films will be showcased with special introductions by cinema film critic and historian Leonard Maltin for the third year.
Ray Nutt, CEO of the specialty distributor, speaking at the annual exhibition conference CinemaCon in Las Vegas, said the company’s growth over the past two years is largely — nearly 60% — due to leveraging repertory films, calling them a “bedrock element of our content offerings.”

Event screenings have almost never mattered to movie theaters more than they do now. With the overall quantity of films released in 2024 down compared to some pre-pandemic levels, which is contributing to the overall lower levels at the annual domestic box office, re-releases of older event films are still providing stable box office that exhibitors depend on. “Princess Mononoke,” Hayao Miyazaki’s animated masterpiece from 1997, with a 4K remaster and IMAX re-release, is approaching $5 million at the box office.
Adding to that hot streak, Fathom Entertainment has announced its Big Screen Classics series of titles for summer and fall 2025, with films celebrating major anniversaries. CEO Ray Nutt announced the news on Thursday during a presentation at CinemaCon in Las Vegas.

These aren’t fun times for billionaires, even though their number keeps proliferating along with their numbers — there are now at least 17 documented “super billionaires” with assets of more than $100 billion. Still, Elon Musk’s Tesla dealerships are being torched, Jeff Bezos’ newspaper is under siege, and Mark Zuckerberg is trying to suppress a new book titled Careless People.
Even Larry Ellison and his son David are having trouble closing their Paramount deal as new interlopers and random Trump bureaucrats intrude. It’s no wonder that Billions, the TV series, ended its run.
Walt Disney, for one, would have been exasperated by the issues overtaking the mega-rich today and, given the environment, might never have greenlighted Snow White — details below.

Veteran actor Brad Dourif may have earned a reputation for playing depraved sociopaths over his extensive career, but his feature debut role of Billy Bibbit in One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest earned him an Oscar nomination at the young age of 24.
A distinct voice, impressive intensity, and a dynamic range have made Dourif a bit of a chameleon, making him one of the best actors of all time whose talents often go overlooked.
From sweet, quiet roles like Billy Bibbit to the grizzled yet morally pure Doc Cochran of Deadwood, Dourif can deftly handle it all. But it’s his high-intensity style that makes him so effective in horror, above all.
While he’s semi-retired now, save for mostly voice-acting work as a certain beloved horror icon, we look back at Brad Dourif’s 10 most memorable genre roles in celebration of his birthday on March 18.

Borderline wants to be a chaotic thrill ride—a pulpy, twisted home-invasion thriller where a deranged stalker traps a pop star in his delusion of love. And in flashes, it gets there. But for a movie with such an unhinged premise, it feels strangely restrained, like it’s holding back when it should be cranking the tension up to eleven. The performances are solid, the setup is fun, and Penny (Alba Baptista) nearly steals the whole show, but Borderline never fully embraces the madness it promises.
Written and directed by Jimmy Warden in his feature debut, the film is set in 1990s Los Angeles and follows Sofia (Samara Weaving), a pop star whose home is invaded by Duerson (Ray Nicholson), an obsessive fan convinced they are destined to be together. Duerson isn’t working alone—his equally deranged accomplices, Penny and J.H. (Patrick Cox), broke out of a psychiatric facility with him,...

David Lynch is widely regarded as one of the greatest filmmakers of all time, known for classics like Twin Peaks and The Elephant Man. The latter, in particular, remains one of the most poignant biopics ever made, telling the tragic tale of Joseph Merrick, the deformed Victorian-era artist known as "The Elephant Man." Now, Jack Huston, well-known for his acting roles in Boardwalk Empire and American Hustle, is set to helm the upcoming remake of David Lynch's 1980s biopic, honoring the legacy of the late filmmaker who passed away in January 2025.
Backed by Phoenix Pictures, the film will be titled Joseph Merrick, and Kate Cohen, David Dobkin, and Mike Medavoy will produce it. While many adaptations have explored Merrick's life, David Lynch's 1980 film, starring John Hurt, remains the best version yet, earning eight Academy Award nominations, including Best Picture and Best Director.

Jack Huston, known for his acting work in Boardwalk Empire and American Hustle, has come aboard to direct a biopic centered on Joseph Merrick, the deformed Victorian Age artist known as The Elephant Man.
Phoenix Pictures is backing the feature, titled Joseph Merrick, which will be produced by Kate Cohen, Mike Medavoy and David Dobkin. Huston will also produce.
Production is looking to start later this year.
Merrick was an object of fascination during his life, and his story resonated beyond his lifetime. He was a man who was incredibly deformed and was used as a circus freak while a teenager and became an object of curiosity by London society as well as scientific circles, but he was also an artist whose work broke beyond the limits of his sometimes confined life. Best Actor Oscar Winners List (Photo Credit – Instagram/Wikipedia)
The Academy Awards have long vaunted acting titans, and a rare few male actors have commandeered the Best Actor statuette more than once, with Daniel Day-Lewis scaling the peak thrice. From living legends like Tom Hanks to recent winners such as Adrien Brody, 10 men are trailing Day-Lewis’ record. Here is every name with two or more wins in this hallowed category.
1. Daniel Day-Lewis
Sir Daniel Day-Lewis stands alone with three Best Actor Oscars, a feat no other man has matched. His wins were facilitated thanks to dramatic transformations for My Left Foot, There Will Be Blood, and Lincoln—roles that exhibit him as an unforgettable chameleon. The Irish actor has retired since 2017’s Phantom Thread, but his five nominations out of fewer than a couple dozen movies certainly make us wonder whether Day-Lewis could come back for that gold once again...

British screenwriter Peter Straughan just won the Oscar for Best Adapted Screenplay for Conclave. The papal thriller was reportedly based on the novel of the same name by Robert Harris. The film has been a strong contender at the Oscars with its nominations in Best Picture, Best Actor, Best Score, and more, but Straughan was the film’s first win of the night.
With its Best Adapted Screenplay win, Conclave may have just increased its chances of winning Best Picture. Historically, the Academy has conferred the big award for the Adapted Screenplay winners, even more so than Original Screenplay winners. This might mean bad news for Sean Baker’s Anora.

There’s a reason the worst “Oscar Bait” exists, and it’s not because Felix Unger’s roommate loves fishing. Over the course of nearly 100 years the Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences has proven that they, like all specific audiences, have a particular sense of taste. The movies that win the Academy Award for Best Picture tend to be serious dramas, often historical pictures and biopics, with important social messages. (Bonus points if it’s about World War II.)
There have always been exceptions, and recent years have trended more surprising, but some genres have a harder time breaking into the Best Picture category than others. Horror movies have historically had a hard time of it, since the genre — on which the industry has often financially relied — has frequently been disregarded by critics and the public at large as “low art.” This has always been a lie and great...

The Star Wars franchise has been nominated for a total of 37 Academy Awards throughout its unique history at the Oscars. Many of the nominations and wins have been centered around sound and visual effects. However, only two films have received nominations for film editing.
The original movie, A New Hope, received both the nomination and win in 1977. Paul Hirsch, Richard Chew, and Marcia Lucas, George Lucas's wife at the time, all took home the award. It was a film that broke a lot of ground in film editing techniques and was well received for its work in the category.
Marcia Lucas was also nominated for George Lucas' 1973 film, American Graffiti. Chew was nominated in 1976 for his film editing work on One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest. Hirsch received a nomination for his work in 2004 for the Ray Charles biopic, Ray.

Gene Hackman, a two-time Oscar winner for “The French Connection” and “Unforgiven,” and his wife, classical pianist Betsy Arakawa, were found dead Wednesday afternoon in their Santa Fe, N.M. home. The office of Santa Fe County Sheriff Adan Mendoza confirmed their deaths to Variety after midnight Thursday. There is no immediate indication of foul play, per authorities, though the Sheriff’s office did not immediately provide a cause of death. Hackman was 95. Arakawa was 63.
On Wednesday, Sheriff’s deputies visited the home of Hackman and Arakawa, who married in 1991. The couple was found dead, alongside their dog.

Long before he became synonymous with iconic roles in The Shining and One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest, Jack Nicholson's first foray into acting was in a not-too-widely-known gritty exploitation film. This early performance paved the way for his legendary career run that would eventually redefine Hollywood stardom. And what was the movie? Released 67 years ago, young Nicholson first stepped into the cinematic world with his debut in the 1958 film The Cry Baby Killer.
The Cry Baby Killer is a tense thriller of the time that delves into youthful angst — and unintended consequences. Nicholson plays Jimmy Wallace, a teenager who, after a violent altercation, believes he has committed murder. In a panic, Jimmy takes hostages, leading to a standoff that captures the attention of the entire city. This role not only marked Nicholson's entry into film but also showcased his ability to convey deep emotional turmoil right out of the gate,...

The stars really did come out for the 50th anniversary special for Saturday Night Live. Introducing Adam Sandler, who performed an incredible SNL50 tribute song, was none other than the legendary Jack Nicholson.

Sandler is known for his songs and mashups, and this one was perfect for the occasion. He sang about the cast, funny moments (including those behind the scenes), the crew, Lorne Michaels, and paid a very heartfelt tribute to fellow SNL vet and friend, the late Chris Farley, who passed away in 1997, and Norm Macdonald, who died in 2021. The film also returns to the screen Marvel Cinematic Universe characters Bucky Barnes (Stan), Red Guardian (David Harbour), John Walker (Wyatt Russell), Taskmaster (Olga Kurylenko), Ghost (Hannah John-Kamen), and Valentina Allegra de Fontaine (Julia Louis-Dreyfus), in addition to some exciting new faces.”
Jake Schreier directs “Thunderbolts” with Kevin Feige producing. Louis D’Esposito, Brian Chapek, Jason Tamez, and former MCU staple Scarlett Johansson serve as executive producers.
The film was scripted by Eric Pearson, Lee Sung Jin (“Beef”), and Joanna Calo (“The Bear”). Both...

The Academy Awards, or the Oscars, are one of the most prestigious honors in the film industry. While millions tune in each year to watch Hollywood’s biggest stars celebrate cinematic excellence, there are plenty of intriguing behind-the-scenes facts that even die-hard movie lovers might not know. Here are ten surprising pieces of Oscar facts that should blow your mind:
1. The Stolen Oscar Heist
In 2000, just days before the Academy Awards, a shipment of 55 Oscar statuettes was stolen from a loading dock in Los Angeles. The disappearance of the trophies sparked a major investigation involving local law enforcement and the FBI. After an extensive search, 52 of the stolen Oscars were found discarded in a dumpster behind a Koreatown grocery store by a man named Willie Fulgear, who later received a $50,000 reward for his discovery. However, three statuettes remain missing to this day, making them some of the most sought-after lost artifacts in Hollywood history.

The ongoing conversation between theaters vs. streaming has many good arguments on each side. However, streaming services are also a way for films that haven't performed well in theaters to get a new chance for success.
Michael Douglas' 2006 political action film is one of them. The two-time Academy Award winner (for 1987's Wall Street and a shared award for 1975's One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest) starred in Clark Johnson's The Sentinel, and the film was not a big hit with the critics or the audience. Almost two decades later, The Sentinel found success on Netflix, debuting at No. 2 on the global charts with 7.9 million views, the equivalent of 14.2 million hours viewed.

Marvel’s Thunderbolts feels like a moment of deja vu. It began with a post-credit scene in Iron Man when Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson) arrived at the Stark Tower to have a chat with Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr.) about the Avengers Initiative; at least he didn’t have to chase him like Steve Rogers (Chris Evans) on the streets of New York. Now Contessa Valentina “Val” Allegra de Fontaine (let me catch my breath for a minute) is seemingly walking down the same path.
We (almost) knew why Nick Fury was so interested in bringing the world’s mightiest heroes together, but the initiative was a success, though we lost a couple of our Avengers by the end of the Infinity Saga. But Valentina? It’s still not clear to me what she is up to, but it looks like she will be the one pulling strings for the new team.

Clark Gable was the Oscar-winning matinee idol who starred in dozens of films before his untimely death in 1960. Let’s take a look back at 12 of Gable’s greatest movies, ranked worst to best.
After appearing in bit parts in a number of films, Gable shot to stardom with his performance in “A Free Soul” (1931) as a gangster who bewitches a young woman (Norma Shearer) whose attorney father (Lionel Barrymore) helped him beat a murder rap. From there forward, the actor’s persona as a raffish leading man who’s every guy’s best friend and every gal’s dream became cemented in a number of subsequent roles.
He won an Oscar just three years later for Frank Capra‘s screwball classic “It Happened One Night” (1934), in which he played a newspaper reporter traveling with a spoiled socialite (Claudette Colbert). The film became the first to sweep the five major Oscars,...

Fernanda Torres and Karla Sofía Gascón made history on Thursday as the first pair of Best Actress Oscar nominees for non-English language performances in nearly 50 years. Torres stars in Sony Pictures Classics’ I’m Still Here from Brazil, while Gascón leads in Netflix’s Emilia Pérez from France. This marks the fourth time two actors have been nominated for non-English roles for different movies in the same year. They will compete against Cynthia Erivo (Wicked), Mikey Madison (Anora), and Demi Moore (The Substance). Both films are cited for Best International Feature and Best Picture while Emilia Pérez became the most-nominated international movie with 13 mentions.
In the Walter Salles‘ political biopic, Torres portrays Portuguese-speaking human rights activist Eunice Paiva, who searches for her missing husband, politician Rubens Paiva, during the Brazilian Military Dictatorship in 1971. Torres’ only precursor recognition was at the Golden Globes, where she surprised in Best Drama Actress. Despite missing at the Critics Choice,...

Few filmmakers had a better 1970s than Sidney Lumet. While he was more prolific than most of the decade's top directors, knocking out 11 movies over a 10-year span, and did find time to helm one of the worst musicals in motion picture history (a badly bungled adaptation of "The Wiz"), when Lumet got ahold of the right material, he made classics like "Serpico," "Dog Day Afternoon," and "Network."
There isn't a more electric movie in Lumet's oeuvre than "Dog Day Afternoon." Based on a true story, the 1975 critical and commercial hit centers on a bank robbery in Brooklyn carried out by Sonny Wortzik, an amateur crook desperate to pay for his lover's gender-affirming surgery. When the heist quickly goes south, Sonny and his associates find themselves stuck holding hostages while cops swarm the building. The defiant Sonny scrambles to negotiate...

Stephen King is an opinionated fellow. Stroll through the fiction aisles of your local bookstore and examine the covers of newish novels, and you probably won't have to search long to find one bearing praise from Stephen King -- which is touching because, in this age of distracted everything, it's nice to see one of the world's most prominent authors exhorting people to lose themselves in a book.
King isn't always a ray of sunshine though. He's infamous for his dislike of Stanley Kubrick's "The Shining" film adaptation, and hasn't held back on other cinematic interpretations of his novels. And when Entertainment Weekly started giving King column space in its printed pages back in the mid 2000s to rant and rave about all things pop culture, he was unsparing with his hatred for the latest music by Jewel, Beyoncé, and Celine Dion while also unloading both barrels on prestige...

Nicholson is an actor so iconic, he’s sometimes referred to simply as “Jack.” The star of classics such as The Shining, One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest, Chinatown, Batman, The Witches of Eastwick, The Departed and As Good As It Gets is certainly enjoying his retirement and continues to turn down roles. Lou Adler, a veteran record producer who is a close friend of Nicholson’s, revealed a couple of years ago, “A friend of mine wanted to put him in a movie. And he had a conversation with him. But Jack says, ‘I don’t want to do it.’ He goes, ‘You know what I did today? I sat under a tree and I read a book.’” Adler laughed, saying, “That sounds like Jack.” Then, he added that Jack is just “doing whatever he really wants to do.”

I’ve always avoided New Year’s resolutions, but this week I happened to recall one that was brief but resolute: I resolved to quit Hollywood.
And I did. Almost.
That decision seems relevant today for reasons that require a bit of history. Consider January 1975, 50 years ago: It was a Hollywood moment that was the opposite of the present, both in numbers and nuance. It was a great time to be around – and not to be.
The audience was expanding and was determined to get scared: Jaws was a smash. But millions also were welcoming the weirdities of One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest. TV fans were puzzled over something new called SNL, and music fans continued to discover Elton John (still are).
As box office kept growing, opportunity was abundant. Words like “downsizing” or “contracting” were still unknown.
There were hints of quantum change, but just hints: The Hollywood...

Sometimes, artists get consigned to doing the same thing over and over again. Many movie fans are now familiar with the term "typecast," when an actor is repeatedly assigned to play the same type of character in film after film. Actors like Dwayne 'The Rock' Johnson, Michael Cera and Giancarlo Esposito all hit the big time and immediately fell into this trap. This problem, if one can call it that, doesn't only affect actors as well. Writers, directors, cinematographers and beyond are sometimes questioned, doubted, or vilified if they try to branch out beyond their perceived comfort zone. Every genre is an entirely different beast, and it takes a truly talented filmmaker to seamlessly shift between them with relative ease. Many have shown their...

With a prolific and colorful career spanning over 50 years, legendary film and TV icon Danny DeVito is undeniably one of Hollywood's most cherished and entertaining presences, attracting the adoration of fans both old and young. Though he is now known for his scene-stealing performances in small screen hits like Taxi and It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia as well as cinema knockouts including Romancing the Stone, Twins, Batman Returns, and Matilda, there was a time when DeVito was struggling to land his big break.
In 1975, DeVito starred opposite fellow acting legend Jack Nicholson in the Academy Award-winning psychological dramedy One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest, a critically-acclaimed adaptation of the Ken Kesey novel that has been lauded as one of the greatest movies of all time. Some of the pint-sized actor's devoted fans may have forgotten that the decorated DeVito appeared in the poignant picture, as he was just 30-years-old when he filmed the influential hit.

Jack Nicholson disappeared from Hollywood after what was an anticlimactic end to one of the greatest film careers of all time with 2010's "How Do You Know?" The movie saw Nicholson play the head of a big firm for which Paul Rudd's George works. If that doesn't sound like the best use of a screen legend, it wasn't. "How Do You Know?" ended up being a star-studded box office flop, with reviewers chastising writer/director James L. Brooks for wasting such impressive talent.
"How Do You Know?" starred Reese Witherspoon, Paul Rudd, and Owen Wilson but surely the biggest waste was Nicholson himself, especially considering he ended his venerable on-screen career with this movie. By this point, Nicholson didn't need to do anything. In fact, he hadn't needed to do anything since he signed a bonkers deal with Warner Bros. for starring as the Joker in 1989's "Batman" and...

Jack Nicholson is one of the greatest actors of all time, but unless you're watching him in an older movie, you haven't seen him onscreen since 2010's little-seen How Do You Know. Nicholson retired soon after, but that doesn't mean he has disappeared. With how many famous roles he's had over the decades, from huge films like Chinatown, One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest, Batman, and The Departed, Nicholson's presence is always around for film fans. If you're a horror buff, it's as Jack Torrance in Stanley Kubrick's The Shining that you remember him most from. Stephen King may have had his reasons for not enjoying Nicholson's performance, but it's iconic and often imitated. Thirty-nine years later, Mike Flanagan began work on a followup, Doctor Sleep, based on another King novel, so Warner Bros. asked Nicholson if he'd be interested in being part of it. Sadly, they were unable...

After slowly returning to production in the wake of a restructuring, EuropaCorp, the company founded by “The Professional” director Luc Besson, is now fully back in action with several French and international films in the pipeline. These include the Snoop Dogg sci-fi movie “The Last Man,” and “Disorder,” a thriller starring Dylan Sprayberry (Teen Wolf”) and Thalia Besson who plays Geneviève in “Emily in Paris” season 4.
The banner, which is best known for its high voltage franchise movies such as “Taken,” “The Transporter” and the Scarlett Johansson movie “Lucy,” is also about to ramp up its output in the scripted TV space. EuropaCorp is nearing a deal with a Federation Studios label to team on the development and production of series based on its best known IP’s, Variety has learned. We're at the end of 2024, and you know what that means. It's time to look back at what all happened this year. We'll start off by saying that it's been a rollercoaster of a year for many of the streaming services, especially Netflix. While there were many renewals from the streamer, there were also some cancellations.
This year, the streaming powerhouse pulled the plug on 17 of its original series, and there's even a chance there will be more cancellations since 2024 isn't quite over yet. Obviously, a show getting canceled is never a good thing, and it sucks for the people who were hoping for additional installments. However, there's one Netflix show that got the boot this year that we're not exactly sad about.
In this article, we shared all the Netflix show cancellations from this year as well as discussed why we weren't necessarily hurt by one of the shows being axed.

The IMDb top-250 is a curious portrait of populist taste. The list is, it's worth remembering, culled only from user ratings on the IMDb website, and, judging by the films on the list, the average IMDb user seems to be a college-age white male with a taste for crime, guns, fantasy, and the ultra-masculine. The top movies on the list all seem to be the types of movies that young men would own posters for, proudly displayed on their dorm room walls. There are many unassailable classics, to be sure, and young teens could easily look to the list as a rudimentary introduction to the world of cinema, but the list seems ... skewed. There's not a lot of variety. It's not curated by a single critic, nor even a panel of critics. It's just a general consensus of the taste of the types of people who like to rate movies on IMDb.

January 2025 could mark a bleak month for very specific reasons, but in that month one can watch a nicely curated collection of David Bowie’s best performances. Nearly a decade since he passed, the iconic actor (who had some other trades) is celebrated with The Man Who Fell to Earth, Merry Christmas Mr. Lawrence, The Linguini Incident, Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me, and Basquiat. (Note: watch The Missing Pieces under Fire Walk with Me‘s Criterion edition for about three times as much Phillip Jeffries.) It’s a retrospective-heavy month: Nicole Kidman, Cameron Crowe, Ethan Hawke, Paulin Soumanou Vieyra, Paolo Sorrentino, and Sean Baker are given spotlights; the first and last bring with them To Die For and Take Out‘s Criterion Editions, joining Still Walking, Hunger, and A Face in the Crowd.

A great hero is nothing without an equally compelling villain spurring them into action, and across the history of cinema, there have been some truly awesome antagonists. From sadistic superiors to murderous maniacs, movie villains come in all shapes and sizes, as the dark depravity and calculated motivations of the bad guys have brought movies to life and made for truly nail-biting viewing. With villains often representing a dark subversion of the hero’s personality, in some cases, the antagonist has endured far more than the protagonist in mainstream popular culture.
Many of the best movies ever made gained their acclaim because of the villains at the heart of their stories, whose unsettling and intriguing nature made audiences question their own morality and beliefs. From an actor’s perspective, playing a villain is often more interesting, as their depraved nature and underhanded tactics keep things exciting. While it’s true...
