Movies open the viewers up to worlds that they never knew existed. They provide drama, laughs, edge-of-the-seat entertainment and more. So it is little surprise that the popularity and thrill of casinos have been captured on the big screen an umpteen number of times. From as early as Casablanca to the James Bond movie Casino Royale, these movies have wowed audiences over the decades.
They might have even added to the popularity of casinos, including online ones. Online gaming is increasingly played with a number of casino games to choose from. There are slots, roulettes and blackjack to be played of course. But there are also specialised games, like the Virgin Games’ creation Lucky Lady charm, among many others.

Norman Reynolds, the two-time Oscar winning production and art designer on various Star Wars and Indiana Jones films who director Steven Spielberg once called the “creative core” of the franchises, has died. He was 89.
LucasFilm Ltd has confirmed his death, first reported by the BBC, which said that Reynolds “died peacefully with his wife Ann and three daughters by his side.”
Spielberg, who first collaborated with Reynolds on 1981’s Raiders of the Lost Ark, said on a statement, “Norman was always smiling with enthusiasm, and there was nothing he couldn’t make work. Joyful and friendly and a massive talent.”
Among Reynolds’ many contributions to the franchises was his sculpting of the iconic golden idol that Harrison Ford’s Indiana Jones attempts to steal during the opening scene of Raiders of the Lost Ark. Reynolds based the idol on an Incan fertility sculpture he’d collected during overseas travels.

Stanley Donen, the legendary director of musicals and romantic comedies, has died at age 94. He started as a choreographer and dance director before being elevated to director status at MGM, where he brought to the screen some of cinema's greatest musicals. Among his achievements: "On the Town", "Royal Wedding", "Singin' in the Rain", "Seven Brides for Seven Brothers", "Kismet", "Funny Face" and "Damn Yankees". As the traditional musical genre started to decline, Donen concentrated on comedies such as "Once More with Feeling", "The Grass is Greener", "Two for the Road" and "Bedazzled". One of his biggest hits was the 1963 comedy thriller "Charade" starring Cary Grant and Audrey Hepburn, which can be described as the best Hitchcock movie not directed by Hitchcock. A similarly-themed spy thriller, "Arabesque" starring Gregory Peck and Sophia Loren, was not as well received. Donen had other artistic misfires in the course of his...

Much has been written about the New Hollywood of the 1970s and how it was formed by a group of bearded film-school grads who grew up on a diet of cinema and broke the hidebound rules of the studio system. But there’s no talking about American film in the Me Decade without discussing the impact of Burt Reynolds, the iconic star who encapsulated so much of the era’s freewheeling attitudes and post-modern sensibilities.
Unlikely the falsely humble stars of yore, Reynolds clearly reveled in being a movie star, whether he was yukking it up on Johnny Carson’s couch or mugging through silly all-star extravaganzas like “The Cannonball Run.” He had the cool of the Rat Pack, but in a way that seemed more attainable to a country mired in recession; Reynolds’ public vibe always leaned closer to a six-pack and a Trans Am than to martinis and limousines.

Reynolds died of cardiac arrest. His niece, Nancy Lee Hess, said that the actor “has had health issues, however, this was totally unexpected.”
She continued, “My uncle was not just a movie icon; he was a generous, passionate and sensitive man who was dedicated to his family, friends, fans and acting students… Anyone who breaks their tailbone on a river and finishes the movie is tough.

Burt Reynolds, one of Hollywood’s most popular leading men during the ’70s and early ’80s in such films as “Deliverance,” “Smokey and the Bandit, “The Longest Yard” and “Semi-Tough,” has died. His rep confirmed that he died Thursday in Jupiter, Fla. He was 82.
He later earned an Oscar nomination as best supporting actor in Paul Thomas Anderson’s ode to skin flicks, “Boogie Nights.” He had been set to appear in Quentin Tarantino’s “Once Upon a Hollywood.”
Reynolds’ appeal lay in his post-modern macho posture undercut by a wry self-awareness, which he used to good effect in comedies as well as action films. For a period during the ’70s he was the nation’s top box office draw. But after one too many bad movies, his popularity waned. He returned to television, where he’d gotten his start, mostly in Westerns, and produced his own sitcom, “Evening Shade,” which brought him an Emmy.

"When you're famous, everybody wants to screw ya." So sayeth Vic Edwards, the faded screen idol portrayed by Burt Reynolds in Adam Rifkin's The Last Movie Star. This former sex symbol has long since passed the "everybody wants to screw ya" stage, his body forever wracked by too many film stunts and eyebrows perpetually levitated from too many facelifts. He spends much of his time bemoaning the wreckage of his life and career, both of which went off the rails decades ago due to a series of poor decisions.

Esther Williams: ‘Pools and Smiles’ formula grows stale [See previous post: "Esther Williams: Swimwear MGM Musical Star Dies."] By the early ’50s, Louis B. Mayer had been ousted from the studio he had helped to found, having been replaced by Dore Schary. Whether or not a coincidence, with the exception of Million Dollar Mermaid, the Esther Williams movies of the ’50s — e.g., The Duchess of Idaho, Skirts Ahoy! (stolen by Vivian Blaine in a supporting role), Dangerous When Wet, Easy to Love — lacked the luster of those released in the previous decade, despite more prestigious directors (George Sidney, Charles Walters, Robert Z. Leonard) and the usual co-stars (Van Johnson, Red Skelton, Howard Keel). (Photo: Esther Williams in Million Dollar Mermaid.) Not surprisingly, although MGM’s color musicals would remain in vogue a few more years, Esther Williams and the studio parted ways following George Sidney’s tired-looking Jupiter’s Darling (1956), with Williams and Howard Keel (as Hannibal) fooling around in ancient times.

Four Hollywood studios have been hit with class-action lawsuits alleging they systematically underpay profit participants on movies distributed via home video. 20th Century Fox, Paramount Pictures, Universal Pictures and Sony Pictures were sued Wednesday in Los Angeles Superior Court by talent whose decades-old contracts allow them to share in the revenue from hit films. The suit against Fox was filed by filmmaker Stanley Donen over his 1975 movie Lucky Lady; the suit against Sony was filed by Larry Martindale, trustee of the estate of late actor Charles Bronson, over the 1975 film Hard Times; the suits against Paramount

Singin’ in the Rain didn’t win an Academy Award back when it was first released in theaters in 1952, but it still became one of the most loved musicals of all time. It’s the American Film Institute’s No. 1 Movie Musical. We’re glad to see the film get its Blu-ray debut for its 60th birthday. A gift for fans indeed.
The movie’s story is reminiscent of the 2012 Best Picture winner The Artist. Set in 1927 Hollywood, Singin’ in the Rain stars Gene Kelly (Cover Girl) as Don Lockwood, a silent movie star with Lina Lamont (Jean Hagen, The Shaggy Dog). When the talkies are introduced and Don and Lina’s film is changed into a musical, Don’s voice is perfect for the new medium, but Lina gets left behind.

[1] Saturday Night Live veteran Jason Sudeikis has been doing pretty well for himself as a movie star lately, with three separate big-screen projects in 2011 alone -- Hall Pass, Horrible Bosses, and the upcoming A Good Old-Fashioned Orgy -- but he hasn't left the small screen behind quite yet. The actor has just signed on for a recurring role on the upcoming season of HBO's baseball comedy Eastbound & Down as Shane, a new friend of former Major League pitcher Kenny Powers (Danny McBride). The next season of Eastbound & Down will be the third and most likely final [2] season of the series, and will premiere in early 2012. [Variety [3]] After the jump, Kristen Bell gains two new suitors, and Nip/Tuck star Julian McMahon takes on the finance industry. Lucky lady Kristen Bell will be getting wooed by not one but two love interests in her upcoming comedy series House of Lies. Said suitors...

Rochester, NY - Ever wonder why schools today stink compared to decades ago? Every think tank moron has their dubious reasonings that appeases their corporate masters. But the truth is extraordinarily simple: Schools dumped their education films.
Do you remember those days when the gym teacher had to pad out health class by wheeling in the 16mm projector from the Av department? They’d thread up classic tales about your body, narcotics, driving safety and manners. Things which kids nowadays can’t seem to handle.
When the Vcr arrived in schools, the 16mm projector was quickly dumped as teaching tool.
Where did these classic films go? Many arrived at the city dump. However a few lucky tens of thousands found themselves on the racks of the Av Geeks Archive. This repository of cinematic education is overseen by Skip Elsheimer. He started collecting the films after I moved out of the infamous PineHaus.

Hitting movie theaters this weekend:
The Roommate – Minka Kelly, Leighton Meester, Cam Gigandet
Sanctum – Richard Roxburgh, Ioan Gruffudd, Allison Cratchley
Movie of the Week
Sanctum
The Stars: Richard Roxburgh, Ioan Gruffudd, Allison Cratchley
The Plot: An underwater cave diving team experiences a life-threatening crisis during an expedition to the unexplored and least accessible cave system in the world.
The Buzz: This film looks stunning. I’m excited to see it in IMAX 3D. With a cast of relative unknowns (save Richard Roxburgh of Moulin Rouge) the star of this one looks to be cinematographer Jules O’Loughlin.
This is S.O.P. as far as Hollywood marketing is concerned, but I’ve always been annoyed when production credits are used to dupe the cinematically challenged populace. This film is produced by James Cameron, not directed. Direction credits go to Alister Grierson, a relatively untested director; Sanctum being only his second feature,...

- The Scorecard Review
Screenwriters, we are often told, rarely get the credit they deserve when a movie becomes a classic. Fans heap praise on the stars and director but rarely get around to giving the ink-stained wretches their due. Of course, blame tends to follow the same path, with those visible targets getting the loudest raspberries when a movie tanks. So in discussing Lucky Lady (making its DVD debut this week from Shout! Factory), let's put aside its sterling cast of Liza Minnelli (in her follow-up to Cabaret), Gene Hackman, and Burt Reynolds, and its legendary director, Stanley Donen (Singin' in the Rain, Charade). Let's talk about the writers.

Don’t wear a red suit and go anywhere near Bo Obama!
The First Dog disrupted an adorable story reading and Q + A session with the first lady and daughters at the Children’s National Medical Center on Dec. 22, when he took a disliking to Santa Claus!
An embarrassed Michelle kept shushing Bo while she tried to read the classic—Twas the Night Before Christmas, and Bo wouldn’t stop barking. Finally, Santa had to hide!
Bo came decked out in a red and white Xmas collar and kept putting his big furry paws up on his “mom” while his “sisters” took turns reading to the children! Malia told her kids audience that her mom makes her hot cocoa, before answering children’s questions.
Want to know what the Obamaettes were asked?
Q: How will Christmas be different for you this year?
Sasha: It will be easier to get on the plane than yeast year.
