Big things are afoot in the indie fantasy book space. Today is The Day of the Dragon, an event started by authors Ryan Cahill, Michael R. Miller, and Philip C. Quaintrell in 2023 to celebrate fantasy of the draconic variety. This event came out of a desire to give something back to readers who love books with dragons in them; the authors hosted sales, released tasty new merch, and generally fostered a sense of celebration in the fandom for all that dragons (and those who tell stories about them) have given us.
This is the second year for The Day of the Dragon, and Cahill is taking advantage of it to make a massive announcement: independent publisher The Broken Binding Press has acquired English worldwide print rights to his hit dragon-rider fantasy series The Bound and The Broken in a major six-figure deal, and will be releasing a brand new run...

August is here, and a bounty of noteworthy new movies and TV shows are coming to Amazon Prime Video this month. If it’s new release films you’re looking for, Paramount’s excellent (and very funny) “Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves” arrives on the streaming service on Aug. 25 after first streaming on Paramount+, while the Elizabeth Banks-directed action-comedy “Cocaine Bear” will be streaming on Aug. 15.
There’s also a Prime Video original film hitting this month in the form of “Red, White & Royal Blue” on Aug. 11, based on the book of the same name by author Casey McQuiston. The LGBTQ romantic comedy stars Taylor Zakhar Perez and Nicholas Galitzine in the story of a prince who falls in love with the son of the president of the United States.
And Thursday Night Football comes to Prime Video starting Aug. 24.

Mel Brooks and Gene Wilder had a truly incredible 1974. It is rare enough that someone makes a comedy that stands the test of time as one of the greatest films in history, regardless of genre classification. They made two. Amazingly, "Blazing Saddles" and "Young Frankenstein" were both released in the same year, and I would consider "Young Frankenstein" to be the funniest film ever made, with "Blazing Saddles" not too far behind it. These two films, along with Brooks and Wilder's 1968 Oscar-winning breakout "The Producers," show two comedy kindred spirits operating at a high level. Each one brings out the best in each other, and I wish it didn't stop with just those three movies.
Well, it was almost just two movies. For as simpatico as those two comic geniuses were at the time, Gene Wilder was not originally going to play The Waco Kid (known to his friends as Jim). In fact,...

In days of old, there were precious few opportunities to see documentaries about the making of specific films. In 1960, John Wayne hosted "The Spirit of the Alamo", a one-hour publicity special for his epic film. In 1965, the James Bond film "Thunderball" was promoted with a one hour prime time TV special, a strategy that was repeated in 1967 for "You Only Live Twice". However, these were the exceptions. In most cases, "making of" documentaries were short featurettes lasting between five and ten minutes on average. Movie fans would only encounter them by accident. American viewers might catch one of them if a network needed something to fill some time gap, such as a rain delay in a live baseball game. The only way die-hard movie buffs could watch such films on demand required access to a 16mm film projector and the ability to know where to purchase them on the collector's circuit.

Growing up, February came chock full of goodness: Martin Luther King Jr., Shirley Chisholm, Frederick Douglass, W.E.B. Du Bois, Booker T. Washington, Mary McCleod Bethune, Rosa Parks, plus everyone who lived during the Harlem Renaissance. There was so much to cram into 28 (or 29) days, that often, these whole entire lives were reduced to just a couple of paragraphs printed beneath their most iconic, heroic-looking portrait.
Complex humans and their complicated stories reduced to neat and noble little boxes.
Its tidiness notwithstanding, February sure seemed like a disruption— the topic of Black History was dropped as abruptly as we had picked it up, and by March 1, we were back to our “Regularly Scheduled Programming.” Racism was over because we finished the “racism” chapters of those books and put them back on the shelves. Blackness went back to the outer periphery of mainstream culture, and everything was “fine” again.

McLaglen with his father Victor on the set of Rawhide with Clint Eastwood.
Andrew V. McLaglen, the son of famed character actor Victor McLaglen, who went on to a successful career as both a television and feature film director, has died at age 94. McLaglen got into directing by working on popular television Westerns in the 1950s and 1960s such as "Rawhide" and "Have Gun, Will Travel". He collaborated with John Wayne on the 1963 Western comedy "McLintock!", which proved to be a boxoffice smash. He would collaborate with Wayne on numerous other films such as "Hellfighters", "Cahill: U.S. Marshall", "The Undefeated" and their most acclaimed joint project, the 1970 Western "Chisum" which proved to be a favorite of President Richard M. Nixon. (Some of Nixon's political adversaries theorized that the film inspired him to launch the secret war in Cambodia.) McLaglen also excelled at making action adventure films such as...

Director Andrew V McLaglen has died, aged 94.
He was best known for directing Westerns such as McLintock! and adventure movies including The Wild Geese.
He worked many times with John Wayne, directing him in McLintock!, The Undefeated, Chisum, Cahill Us Marshal and Hellfighters. His TV work included Westerns Gunsmoke and Rawhide.
The British-born director's last major project, Return from the River Kwai, was released in 1989.
Actors Roger Moore and Cary Elwes are among those who have paid tribute to McLaglen.
Terribly sad. My dear friend Andrew McLaglen has left us. Brilliant filmmaker and a great mate.

There is no studio that times their releases more perfectly than Warner Bros. Around the end-of-year holidays there will be gift sets for films like “Elf” and “Willy Wonka.” Near Valentine’s Day and Mother’s Day, you can expect gift-appropriate releases.
And, of course, they always bring out the war movies and Westerns for Father’s Day in June. This year’s gift idea is a beauty, a massive 40-film, career-spanning set of films starring the legendary John Wayne. From 1932’s “Big Stampede” to 1976’s “The Shootist,” there’s a bit of everything for Wayne fans in here, but more for those who like war movies and Westerns.
Rating: 4.0/5.0
We don’t need to go through them all but highlights include “Rio Bravo,” “El Dorado,” “The Searchers,” “The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance,” “True Grit,” “How the West Was Won,” “Fort Apache,” “Donovan’s Reef,” and “Hatari!” Some Wayne...

Harry Carey Jr., the son of legendary Western movie actor Harry Carey, has died from natural causes at age 91. Although the younger Carey never became a star, he worked steadily over the decades as a reliable character actor. He was the last surviving member of the so-called John Ford "Stock Company", a reference to the mercurial director's penchant for working with the same actors on many films. He also appeared in numerous films starring his good friend John Wayne, who idolized Carey's father, who he also made several films with. It was Ford and Wayne who gave Carey Jr. his most memorable screen roles in films such as Rio Grande, She Wore a Yellow Ribbon, Wagon Master and The Searchers. After Ford's death, he appeared with Wayne in the popular Westerns The Undefeated, Big Jake and Cahill: U.S. Marshall. A younger generation of directors were respectful of Carey's...

A melancholy history of Hollywood recounted in terms of the offspring of its greatest personalities would reveal a litany of also-rans, failures and addicts. Harry Carey Jr was one of the happy exceptions to that rule. His father was John Ford's favourite actor; the director dedicated his 1948 film Three Godfathers to "the memory of Harry Carey – bright star of the early western sky". Ford's The Searchers (1956) ended with John Wayne standing, one arm across his chest, in a pose made famous by Carey Sr.
Carey Jr worked prolifically with Andrew V McLaglen, the son of Victor McLaglen, another of Ford's stock company. For that director he made many episodes of TV westerns and roughly a dozen films, often starring Wayne and James Stewart, including The Rare Breed (1966), Bandolero! (1968), Something Big (1971) and Cahill (1973).
Carey was sought out by American directors who recalled the golden era of their national cinema and his part in it.
