Sudbury, Suffolk is set to get a lot scarier this Halloween season as the Dead And SudBuried horror festival returns for its eighth instalment, running from 4th to 6th October 2024. What started as a small celebration of horror films has now evolved into a three-day horror extravaganza, featuring nine new feature films, classic horror screenings, 18 short films, director and cast Q&As, and plenty of other terrifying surprises.
The festival’s origins date back to 2016 when organiser Andy Piper decided to host a one-day event as a birthday present to himself. What began as a humble affair screening horror classics has since grown into a full-fledged horror film festival, attracting horror fans from across the UK. Now, Dead And SudBuried is a staple on the horror festival circuit, with its mix of world premieres, UK premieres, and classic films from the genre.

Stanley Kubrick's 1971 dystopian sci-fi film "A Clockwork Orange" points out that a modern British society -- so devoted to stuffy manners, politeness, and keeping evil out of sight -- won't know how to deal with legitimate sociopaths. Alex DeLarge (Malcolm McDowell) is a violent little punk who regularly leads his teen gang -- the Droogs -- into fights, into bars that serve drug-laced milk, and into the locked homes of their victims. Alex beats and assaults people without a scrap of conscience, and sees the world as something to consume, use up, and have sex with. Kubrick toys with the audience a little, presenting Alex as charismatic and funny, even though he's a monster.
When Alex is finally apprehended for his many crimes, the juvenile delinquent is thrown into prison and subjected to a new kind of rehabilitation technique ... involving movies. Alex has his eyes clamped open and he...

Stars: Olga Kurylenko, Clive Standen, Lilibet Butanaseva, Litiana Butanaseva, Nick Moran, Lucy Martin, Peter Franzen, Dominique Vandenberg, Rita Tushingham | Written and Directed by Jesse V. Johnson
Writer/director Jesse V. Johnson opens his latest film, Boudica, on an impressive note. Roman soldiers march through a dark, fog-enshrouded, forest. It’s creepy and ominous as if something unseen is waiting for them. And there is, a group of Druids who kneel, chanting in a clearing. The warrior goddess they hoped to summon doesn’t save them and the legion graphically slaughters them.
Meanwhile, in Britania’s Icini Province, Prasutagus rules alongside his queen, Boudica. Despite having to deal with the Roman occupiers life is good for them and their daughters Bre (Lilibet Butanaseva) and Aife (Litiana Butanaseva; On the Morning You Wake (to the End of the World), The Bay of Silence, The Wheel of Time, Kiddyzuzaa).
That is until Prasutagus...

Michael Caine’s heist comedy has been rated one of the top UK movies ever. It’s a flip Swingin’ England slapstick thriller, lavishly produced and with an emphasis on fancy cars. Caine is a cockney crook with an insane scheme to steal millions in Red Chinese gold in Turin. Slick stuntwork combines with ‘Team Brit’ humor for a wild escape in a rush hour traffic jam. The lavish goes for show-off spectacle — its real stars are a trio of undersized, underdog UK automobiles.

This week’s horror and sci-fi Blu-ray and DVD titles are an eclectic bunch, led by a pair of cult classics—Fright and Straight on Till Morning—which were both directed by Peter Collinson. Arrow Video put together a special edition release for Who Saw Her Die?, which this writer is really looking forward to checking out in the coming weeks, and Unearthed Classics is resurrecting Nightwish on both formats as well.
In terms of new films, The Velocipastor arrives on Tuesday on both Blu and DVD, and for those of you who missed it in theaters, Dark Phoenix rises again on multiple formats, and Clownado touches down this week on DVD as well.
Other notable releases for September 17th include The Night Sitter, D-Railed, The Bloody Ape, Return of the Scarecrow, and The Films of Sarah Jacobson: Mary Jane’s Not a Virgin Anymore & I Was a Teenage Serial Killer from Agfa.

Curious about all those Region B Hammer Blu-rays from overseas, the ones requiring a region-free player? As a public service, Savant has solicited an expert opinion (you'll have to take my word for that) of a film restoration/transfer specialist who is also an informed fan of the filmic output of the little horror studio at Bray. I know, real Hammer fans buy first and worry about quality later, but this little guide might be of help to the rest of us budget-conscious collectors.
A 'Guest' article Written by a trusted Savant correspondent.
(Note: I receive plenty of emails asking for advice about the quality of Region B Blu-rays, most of which I don't see. I have access to industry people qualified to compare and judge the discs, but they stay off the record, because their employers forbid them to go online with their opinions. They must sometimes simmer in...

The magic and pixie dust is back on Sunday night TV. Kylie welcomes the return of Once Upon A Time...
This review contains spoilers.
3.1 The Heart of the Truest Believer
Once Upon a Time sails through the portal to Never Land and into its third season with all the intensity of Emma on a Momma Bear streak. Thrilling pacing and a fabulous collection of witty one-liners make up for chunks of cheesy sentimentality and a bit of drama-mongering in an overall satisfying opening that buzzes with momentum.
To be fair, it may just take some time to get reacquainted with Once’s Disney-fied approach to storytelling. It’s certainly a departure from Breaking Bad, Dexter, and other not-so-positive shows that have occupied geeks’ televisions since the end of Once’s last season. We just aren’t used to watching something where lines like “If you believe,...

This review contains spoilers.
2.22 And Straight On Till Morning
Take a few minutes to meditate after the season two finale of Once Upon a Time - your blood pressure’s probably up. The show is firing on all cylinders, rocketing between plots and characters fueled by raw, devastating emotion. The frantic yet strangely balanced combination of action and drama makes this finale a heck of a ride. Despite too many characters and some too-convenient plot points, And Straight On Till Morning is a thoroughly entertaining watch that makes viewers regret the end of even a season as uneven as this one has been.

Once Upon A Time, Season 2, Episode 22: “And Straight on Till Morning”
Written by Edward Kitsis & Adam Horowitz
Directed by Dean White
Airs Sundays at 8pm (Et) on ABC
Once Upon a Time has closed its pages on the saga of Season Two and just like the writers planned, the season ends with a bang. Every single element you could possible need is present in the ending.
The destruction of Storybrooke by Greg and Tamara is the main focus of the episode. Everyone is on top of their scenes tonight; we find ourselves being pulled into the television set and rooting for everyone. Even the most unlikely of heroes steps up and fights to help in their own way, including Regina, Rumplestiltskin, and Hook.
The episode jumps right in with action and suspense within the first few seconds- the writers waste no time pulling us in as quickly as they can get us.

Kylie doubts whether next week's finale will be able to tie together season two's many loose ends...
This review contains spoilers.
2.21 Second Star to the Right
There’s little time for sentiment in this week’s action-heavy episode, and that’s perhaps a good thing after last week’s sluggish-feeling fest. Still, there’s something lacking in a Once episode that prioritizes plot movement over its characters’ internal struggles. The notable exception, involving Emma, Neal, and a sucking green portal of doom, injects a little much-needed personal drama into the episode, but it’s a bit too forced to really do the trick. Last week’s episode built an emotional foundation for the finale, and this week does the same from a plot standpoint, rushing to set-up a conclusion-worthy climax. It’s a mediocre offering, interesting to watch once but not much worth rewatching,...

Dreams really do come true at the Olympics. (And no, we're not just talking about you, Michael Phelps.)
Director Danny Boyle's Olympic Opening Ceremony has officially cemented itself as one of the most memorable in the sporting event's history thanks to one particularly dazzling duel between Lord Voldemort and Mary Poppins.
A fight between the magical nanny and the Harry Potter villain may sound like a scene out of an over-imaginative 12-year-old's dream, but the scenario was made real on Boyle's "Isles of Wonder" -- of course, that too, was a part of a dream. The magical skit was part of a broader section of the ceremonies, entitled "Second to the Right, and Straight On Till Morning" -- the famous directions to Neverland, as given to Wendy by Peter Pan. The bit highlighted children's literature and featured a few terrifying villains, from Lord Voldemort to the Child Catcher from Chitty Chitty Bang Bang.

Here's how the whole thing shook out, straight from DeMatteis: There’s a long version and a short version of this story and I’ll opt for the short one: In the mid-nineties I was working on a screenplay for producer/screenwriter Chris Columbus (Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone ): an original I’d pitched, and sold, to his company, 1492 Pictures, called Straight On Till Morning. Around the same time I met—and became instant best friends with—a wonderful director named Carlo Carlei (Romeo and Juliet). Well, it turned out that Carlo was also working with Chris and his partners—helping them to develop Marvel Comics’ blind superhero, Daredevil, into a feature film. The movie had been through a number of drafts and the creative team was looking for a new take. Short story even shorter: Carlo wanted me involved and, since I was already working for 1492, Chris...
