Cinema is replete with all kinds of onscreen deaths, including the unforeseen ones, which serve either to terrify the unexpecting audience or for comic relief. Sometimes even when everything seems safe and quiet, the filmmakers kill their characters all of a sudden to our shock.
Here are 5 of the most unforgettable examples of such deaths, chosen by Redditors. Heavy spoiler alert, obviously!
1.The Departed (2006) - Billy (Leonardo DiCaprio)
Presumably, this one comes first to mind when we’re talking about jaw-dropping movie killings. The thriller’s finale promised a fair ending when DiCaprio’s character catches Matt Damon’s bad guy Colin and prepares to bring justice to him, but he gets suddenly shot by Colin’s friend with his brains left on the back of the elevator wall.
2. The Big Lebowski (1998) - Donny (Steve Buscemi)
Even the Donny actor confessed that this very onscreen demise is his favorite one.

When a Ping Pong anime series was first announced in early 2014, I had to ask: Why? Taiyo Matsumoto’s manga had already been adapted to film back in 2002. Directed by first-timer Fumihiko Sori with a script by rising star Kankuro Kudo, the film launched the career of actor Shido Nakamura. It even came with songs by Supercar and Boom Boom Satellites. I couldn’t imagine anything better than that. When I learned Masaaki Yuasa was directing the series, I became even more curious – and confused. Yuasa was one of my all-time favorite anime directors (and still is.) His 2007 science fiction series Kaiba changed my vision of what TV anime could be. He would have been a great fit to adapt Yuasa’s epic No. 5 . Instead he was hired to go back over old ground. I didn’t understand why at the time. Now I recognize that of all Matsumoto’s comics,...

Oh, what a world it would have been if veteran actor Johnny Depp had worked with another iconic director Quentin Tarantino in one of his most famous projects. Starring Samuel L. Jackson and John Travolta in the main lead, Tarantino created the iconic 1994 movie Pulp Fiction.
In the film, the role of Pumpkin went to Tim Roth. According to recent reports, however, Tarantino had made a backup plan if Tom Roth had refused. In the list of actors to play the role of Pumpkin, Johnny Depp was a strong second contender and the world would have surely loved him in that role!

Demand for The Hives has gotten so high that they just can’t keep up. Err, at least that’s the reason the band gave when they announced that they are now accepting applications for folks to start officially-sanctioned The Hives cover bands. That’s right: The Hives are franchising themselves.
“[We] can no longer keep up with public demand for concerts… Q2 and Q3 reports both point to the need for a new solution to this problem,” a humorous Instagram post from the band read. “We have now after much sighing and woe come up with what we think is the most elegant solution. We need several The Hives…. You can now start your very own The Hives and put on a show!”
The announcement post went on to state that “rules and regulations” would apply “upon application,” and included a link to a page on the band’s website...

Noel Gallagher reflected on the era leading up to Oasis’ 1994 debut album Definitely Maybe while dismissing the band’s Britpop contemporaries like Blur, Pulp, and The Stone Roses in a new interview via Mojo.
“We always had unshakable self-belief in Oasis,” the former guitarist-vocalist began. “Everybody who heard the demos of what would become Definitely Maybe were freaking out, so we just wanted to seize the moment. We’d been talking the talk amongst ourselves for a couple of years and when it came down to it, we were ready. Every minute I spent awake, I just knew it was going to happen.”
Gallagher likened the album’s rollout to “being in a rocket ship that was taking off,” then switched to a different high-octane analogy: “Before Definitely Maybe came out, our singles had put us in pole position in the Grand Prix. We had the best car, were the best drivers,...

The songs on Slow Pulp’s second studio album, Yard, revolve around feelings of isolation and trust. Indeed, there’s a melancholic haze that permeates the album, as singer Emily Massey grapples with learning to be alone. “Could you want me tomorrow/Or is it gone?” she cries on the opening track, “Gone 2,” hinting at the themes she’ll go on to explore throughout the album.
Because of Covid restrictions, the vocals for Slow Pulp’s first studio album, Moveys, were recorded in Massey’s father’s home studio, and the band did the same on Yard. As such, Massey’s vocals remain distinctly warm and intimate, if bleak: “Yet another full moon that I missed this year,” she laments on “Mud.”
And similar to Moveys, the songs on Yard alternate between mellow acoustic ballads and fuzzy pop-punk anthems. But whereas the earlier album was full of light, poppy beats,...

Quentin Tarantino has helmed many popular movies over the past three decades, but his 1994 crime drama Pulp Fiction is possibly the most beloved. The film not only put Tarantino on the map as Hollywood’s newest hitmaker, but it also revived John Travolta’s career, proving that he could headline a major movie, even after a lengthy gap in his resume.
There are a number of memorable scenes in Pulp Fiction, but the dance sequence between Travolta’s Vincent Vega and Uma Thurman’s Mia Wallace is the most iconic. Interestingly enough, Tarantino was inspired by a Disney animated classic when coming up with the concept for the sequence.
‘Pulp Fiction’ became a major critical and commercial success
Tarantino was new on the scene when he wrote and directed Pulp Fiction. While his first movie, Reservoir Dogs, was critically praised, Pulp Fiction made him a star.

Quentin Tarantino announced via series of tweets last week the death of Once Upon A Time In Hollywood’s leading man, Rick Dalton. He made the announcement via The Video Archives podcast, which he hosts with Pulp Fiction cowriter Roger Avary, and indicated that today’s podcast would be “a memorial episode designed by Quentin that features some of Rick’s best roles.”
The director made good on that promise.
“On May 19, 2023, actor Rick Dalton passed away peacefully in his home in Honolulu, Hawaii,” announces Avary’s daughter Gala — who produces the show — at the opening of the podcast. “He is survived by his wife, Francesca. Dalton was beloved by fans of Bounty Law, where he played bounty hunter Jake Cahill for five seasons and also for his iconic role as Eddie Karpinski, the flamethrower-wielding vigilante in The Fireman, The Fireman Part 2, and The Fireman 3: CIA Crackdown. The accompanying video for the title track off of their forthcoming 26th studio album, The Girl Is Crying In Her Latte, will premiere on YouTube on Friday (3 March).

Brothers Ron and Russell Mael met Blanchett “in Paris at the Cesar Awards last year”.

“Dreams really do come true. We will sleep well tonight knowing that forever we can say we co-starred in a film with Cate Blanchett.

Steve Mackey, longtime bassist of Pulp, has died at the age of 56.
According to a statement from the band, Mackey passed away on Thursday morning. A cause of death was not disclosed.
In a separate statement, his wife Katie Grand said that, “After three months in hospital, fighting with all his strength and determination, we are shocked and devastated to have said goodbye my brilliant, beautiful husband, Steve Mackey. Steve died today, a loss which has left myself, his son Marley, parents Kath and Paul, sister Michelle and many friends all heartbroken. Steve was the most talented man I knew, an exceptional musician, producer, photographer and filmmaker. As in life, he was adored by everyone whose paths he crossed in the multiple creative disciplines he conquered. Quentin Tarantino's "Reservoir Dogs" has remained a pop culture watermark since it blasted its way onto screens in 1992. At its core, the deconstructed crime film is about disguise and betrayal. Tim Roth's undercover cop Freddy Newandyke is pretending to be a gangster, but in a sense, all of the characters are in disguise.
The monikers they take on are supposed to protect their true identity just in case any backstabbing goes on or the police nab some of them during the jewelry heist. But those fake names are also giving them permission to play pretend, just like a group of kids playing dress up. In the planning stage, all the characters are playing their parts; when the plan fails, their personas give them a reason to become more extreme versions of themselves.
In flashbacks, we see Freddy construct his criminal self in order to infiltrate the group, suggesting...

Family of Die Hard and Pulp Fiction actor, 67, releases statement to share diagnosis following retirement from acting owing to aphasia
Bruce Willis, who retired from acting last May as a result of aphasia, has been diagnosed with frontotemporal dementia, his family announced on Thursday.
In a statement posted to the website for the Association for Frontotemporal Degeneration, the Die Hard actor’s family – wife Emma Heming, ex-wife Demi Moore and daughters Rumer, Scout, Tallulah, Mabel and Evelyn – revealed Willis’s aphasia had progressed into a diagnosis of dementia. Problems with language and memory, which instigated rumors about his cognitive state and prompted his retirement in May 2022, are “just one symptom of the disease Bruce faces”, they wrote.

Quentin Tarantino and Miramax have settled their lawsuit related to Pulp Fiction NFTs. So, yeah, that’s partly what Qt has been up to instead of writing his 10th and final film.
A joint statement read: “The parties have agreed to put this matter behind them and look forward to collaborating with each other on future projects, including possible NFTs.”
The lawsuit goes back to last year and stems from Quentin Tarantino’s attempt to market and sell Pulp Fiction NFTs through OpenSea, the premiere spot for non-fungible tokens. Miramax quickly tried to put the kibosh on that, saying the writer/director couldn’t do such an act since the studio owned “all rights.” Tarantino, however, claimed he did indeed have publication rights to the film that won him his first Oscar.

Quentin Tarantino is going back to his roots.
The iconic filmmaker teams up again with “Pulp Fiction” co-screenwriter and fellow former Video Archives coworker Roger Avary to discuss the classic collection of cult films. The duo met back in 1983 when working at the famed video rental store in Manhattan Beach, California. The long-closed shop housed close to 8,000 VHS tapes and DVDs, which Tarantino purchased in 1995, the same year he and Avary won the Oscar for Best Original Screenplay for “Pulp Fiction.”
Now, in “The Video Archives Podcast,” Tarantino and Avary rewatch the original tapes from the Video Archives collection, featuring movies like “Dark Star,” “Moon Raker,” “Demonoid,” “Messenger of Death,” and “Piranha.” The podcast launches July 19 and is produced by SiriusXM subsidiary Stitcher.

The Bad Guys
As Spring slowly arrives, the multiplex makes way for a new family-friendly animated feature film. Now, this one’s got an interesting twist, a “spin” on a firmly established trope of the “cartoon conflict’. Well, it’s not a “skewed’ satiric fairy tale or fable but rather goes further back, before the features, to those “much-missed” theatrical shorts. Very often they dealt with a chase, usually a pursuit with a predator animal trying to capture its (not so defenseless) prey. In the world of Looney Tunes, Sylvester is after Tweety while the Coyote was always several steps behind that Roadrunner. But what about shifting the focus from the “heroes” to the “villains”, to a team of “nogoodniks” who somehow want to change? Or do they? Can they really “flip” their “nature” or must they remain The Bad Guys?
This “cartoon caper” begins with a casual diner conversation between the gang’s leader,...

Reuniting stars from classic movies has been an Oscar tradition, creating memorable moments like Bonnie and Clyde‘s Warren Beatty and Faye Dunaway announcing the wrong Best Picture winner at the 2017 ceremony.
This year’s producers took that to another level with four big reunions — The Godfather, Pulp Fiction, White Men Can’t Jump and Juno — among the presenters at the 2022 Academy Awards. While the first two were somewhat overshadowed by Will Smith slapping Chris Rock just moments earlier, the reunions still delivered an emotional punch and multiple standing ovations.

Samuel L. Jackson found out on “The Tonight Show” (via Uproxx) this week that he does not hold the record for most curse words said by an actor on screen. A viral Buzz Bingo survey published in May 2020 reported that Jonah Hill had said more curse words in his movies than Jackson, who is more or less royalty when it comes to cursing in films thanks to his legendary use of the word “motherfucker.” Even more surprising, Jackson ranked third on the list behind Hill and Leonardo DiCaprio.
“That’s some bullshit!” Jackson said with a laugh when finding out he didn’t hold the record. “No, no, no way! Jonah Hill and Leo? Really? I don’t believe that. Somebody has miscounted.”
Buzz Bingo surveyed over 3,500 film scripts and reported that Hill had used 376 swear words throughout his filmography, with the majority of curse words split between “Superbad” and “The Wolf of Wall Street.

Mostly memes and shit,” Koma tells Rolling Stone as Lovato lets out a cackle. “When you find artists who are equally as good a hang as they are a talent, it makes life so much more fun and exciting.”
On Feb. 4, Lovato, along with Koma’s band, Winnetka Bowling League, released the breakup ballad, “Fiimy,” an acronym meaning, “Fuck it, I miss you.

Update (November 17): Quentin Tarantino’s attorney, Bryan Freedman, has issued the following statement on Miramax’s lawsuit against him: “Miramax is wrong – plain and simple. Quentin Tarantino’s contract is clear: he has the right to sell NFTs of his hand-written script for Pulp Fiction and this ham-fisted attempt to prevent him from doing so will fail. But Miramax’s callous decision to disclose confidential information about its filmmakers’ contracts and compensation will irreparably tarnish its reputation long after this case is dismissed.”
Earlier (November 16): Miramax has filed a lawsuit against Quentin Tarantino over an Nft project involving “Pulp Fiction.” The Oscar winner announced at the start of November that he was putting seven uncut scenes from “Pulp Fiction” up for auction as Secret NFTs on OpenSea, the world’s largest Nft marketplace. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Miramax sent a cease-and-desist letter to Tarantino after the announcement but the Nft project persisted.

Update, 2:06 Pm: It is fair to say that there doesn’t look like there is going to be a lot of nuance in the showdown between Quentin Tarantino and Miramax over the Pulp Fiction director’s decision to auction off NFTs of his classic Oscar winning film.
Yesterday, the Bill Block run company took its one time Golden boy to court over the seven “exclusive scenes” from the 1994 picture that he said he plans to put in the digital art market. Citing breach-of-contract, copyright infringement and more, the jury trial seek lawsuit to prove its point also dropped Tarantino’s 1993 contract with Miramax in the docket as Exhibit A — and that really pissed off Tarantino and his heavyweight Beverly Hills lawyer.
Like “I dare you, I double dare you motherfu*ker” pissed off, as Samuel L. Jackson’s iconic Jules says in Pulp Fiction.

Film studio Miramax is suing director Quentin Tarantino over plans to release non-fungible tokens (NFTs) based on his 1994 film, Pulp Fiction.
Tarantino announced plans earlier this month to release seven NFTs based on the film, including scenes from an early script that were cut from the final version. The NFTs will also contain Pulp Fiction art and commentary from Tarantino himself. Miramax says that it sent a cease-and-desist letter to the director after the announcement, to no avail. The studio claims that it is in discussions about forging Nft partnerships based on its library of films and that Tarantino’s agreement devalues those efforts....

With an impressive leading haul this year of 35 Oscar nominations (a streamer record), Netflix apparently wanted more and just pushed that number to 36, saying Thursday that it has acquired the Live Action Short nominee Two Distant Strangers.
The film, written by Emmy winner Travon Free and directed by Free and Martin Desmond Roe, revolves around the repeated attempts by cartoonist Carter James (played by rapper Joey Bada$$) to get home to his dog as he is thwarted by a recurring deadly encounter that forces him — in a twist on movies from Groundhog Day to Palm Springs — to relive the same awful day over and over again (check out the trailer above).
Having seen the film earlier this year it could not be more timely, especially in the light of events surrounding the death of George Floyd and numerous others in the Black community. With the deal, Two Distant Strangers begins streaming April 9 on Netflix.

When you think of the most enduring songs of the 20th century, which ones come to mind? How about Bob Dylan’s “Tangled Up in Blue”? Irving Berlin’s “Blue Skies”? The Kinks’ “Waterloo Sunset”? Gloria Gaynor’s “I Will Survive”?
Acid-folk guru Peter Stampfel concurs with all those choices, and as his new album demonstrates, he would also add the Spice Girls’ “Wannabe.”
For his latest project, Peter Stampfel’s 20th Century in 100 Songs, Stampfel decided to pay tribute to the past century by covering one song from each year.

A fan of James Bond just couldn’t say no to owning a piece of movie memorabilia used by the late Sean Connery in the first James Bond film.
A Walther Pp pistol used by Connery in the 1962 film Dr. No sold for $256,000 at auction on Thursday, Julien’s Auctions said. The sale price topped expectations of a sale between $150,000 to $200,000 prior to the event.
The deactivated semi-automatic Walther Pp pistol and its smaller model, the Ppk, became one of the best-known images from the film. Its collector’s value was perhaps enhanced by Connery’s death on Oct. 31.
The winning bidder asked to remain anonymous, according to Julien’s. However, they were described as an American who had seen every James Bond movie with his or her children.

In April, as everyone was just getting used to conducting affairs through Zoom calls, director Rob Savage had an idea: Set up an elaborate video-conference prank in which he explores the source of creepy footsteps coming from his attic, ending in a horrifying jump scare for his friends. The two-minute video, now viewed over 220,000 times on Twitter, immediately sparked the interest of executives at horror streaming service Shudder.
“We said, ‘Let’s talk right away.’ What sold us was ‘Zoom seance,'” Shudder general manger Craig Engler recalled of the timely concept. “It was 12 weeks from the time we were pitched the movie to the time it ended up on Shudder.”
The 57-minute film based on Savage’s video, “Host,” released in July, exemplifies why AMC Networks’ Shudder has been able to find success in such a crowded streaming landscape. The service, which launched in 2015, crossed 1 million subscribers in September thanks to its nimbleness,...

The mid-April weekend following spring vacation has never been a major release date. But looking back at this weekend at the 2004 box office reveals that non-game changers can be just as revealing as more obvious winners.
Sixteen years ago, two independent distributors, Miramax and Lions Gate (they changed their name later), took advantage of the lack of studio competition to launch two significant titles. Miramax won the weekend handily with “Kill Bill: Volume 2,” while Lions Gate limped across the finish line with “The Punisher,” a Marvel title they were trying to launch as a franchise.

Image Comics "Pulp", available May 27, 2020 is written by Ed Brubaker and illustrated by Sean Phillips, with a cover by Sean Phillips:
"...'Max Winters', a pulp magazine writer in 1930's New York, finds himself drawn into a story not unlike the tales he churns out at 5 cents a word - tales of a wild west outlaw dispensing justice with a six-gun. But will Max be able to do the same, when pursued by bank robbers, spies and enemies from his past?
"One part thriller, one part meditation on a life of violence, Pulp is unlike anything the award-winning team of Brubaker and Phillips have ever done. A celebration of pulp fiction, set in a world on the brink. And another must-have hardback from one of comics most-acclaimed teams..."

Since any New York City cinephile has a nearly suffocating wealth of theatrical options, we figured it’d be best to compile some of the more worthwhile repertory showings into one handy list. Displayed below are a few of the city’s most reliable theaters and links to screenings of their weekend offerings — films you’re not likely to see in a theater again anytime soon, and many of which are, also, on 35mm. If you have a chance to attend any of these, we’re of the mind that it’s time extremely well-spent.

“Once Upon a Time in Hollywood” director Quentin Tarantino and his Dp Robert Richardson will receive the Cinematographer-Director Duo Award at the Camerimage International Film Festival.
The prize goes annually to a helmer-dp combo whose collaboration has shaped the look and feel of a major motion picture. The Camerimage fest focuses mainly on the art of cinematography. It will take place in Toruń, Poland, on Nov. 9-16.
Richardson has won the Academy Award for cinematography three times – for Martin Scorsese’s “Hugo” (2012) and “The Aviator” (2004), and for Oliver Stone’s “JFK” (1991).
Tarantino has won two Oscars – Best Writing, Original Screenplay for “Django Unchained” (2012), and Best Writing, Screenplay Written Directly for the Screen, shared with Roger Avery, for “Pulp Fiction” (1994). He directed both films. Richardson lensed “Django” while Andrzej Sekula was Dp on “Pulp.”

As a former film critic and movie columnist, there are few things I enjoy more than a good fight over a much-anticipated, freshly-released picture and we have a doozy going right now over Quentin Tarantino’s “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood.” Critics usually square off over new Tarantino movies, but none of his pictures have spawned quite the op-ed fever of “Once,” at least going back 25 years to his “Pulp Fiction.”
Most critics, scholars and academics teaching film theory and the like immediately proclaimed “Pulp Fiction” a masterpiece, citing Tarantino as a genius, or at least a video store clerk savant, predicting his film would change the cinematic landscape for decades to come, and they were not wrong.
Other bright voices were raised in opposition, calling “Pulp Fiction’s” whimsical treatment of violence a grave cultural offense likely to cause actual violence in society, and condemned the movie as...
