These days, it’s rare to hear something cool about programming on the Netflix streaming service that involves older films rather than the next batch of “Netflix Original Films” they have in the works – but here’s something very cool: Netflix has announced that they’re teaming up with the New York Film Critics Circle to launch a screening series called Hitch! The Original Cinema Influencer at the Paris Theater, which is the longest-running arthouse cinema in New York City and is also Manhattan’s only remaining single-screen cinema, as well as the borough’s largest movie theater, with 535 seats. If you can’t make it to the Paris Theater for the screenings, you’ll be glad to hear that a collection of classic Hitchcock films will also be available to stream on Netflix as of June 1st.

Alfred Hitchcock enjoyed making his audiences suffer, and now that uneasy feeling is coming to Netflix in large doses. The streamer said today that it will add several of the horror-suspense master’s best loved films, including The Birds, Vertigo, Rear Window, his final film Family Plot and more.

Get ready to scream: Netflix is bringing a collection of Alfred Hitchcock films to the streaming service this June — and, despite chief Ted Sarandos’ belief that the movie-theater biz is “outdated,” the company will showcase the legendary filmmaker’s work at its Paris Theater in New York City in a six-week series.
Starting June 1, a collection of classic Hitchcock films will be available to stream in the U.S. Those will include “Vertigo,” “Rear Window,” “Frenzy,” “The Man Who Knew Too Much,” “Family Plot” and “The Birds.” Currently, U.S. customers can stream Hitchcock’s genre-defining masterpiece “Psycho,” now available on Netflix in the country.

One of the most salient shortcomings of Netflix as a streaming service is that its film library at any given moment is frustratingly devoid of movies made before 1980. In the streamer's defense, their focus since 2013 (when they hit binge-viewing paydirt with "House of Cards") has been on generating a raft of original programming in order to cut back their need to license classic television shows and films they do not own. Additionally, the success of streaming services like The Criterion Channel and Tubi, which cater to cinephiles with an array of pre-1980 movies, suggests that this market has already voted with its dollars. This is somewhat understandable, but it also does a huge disservice to young film fans who, for example, might fall so hard for Mike Flannagan's "The Haunting of Hill House" that they desperately need to see Robert Wise's much-lauded 1963 take on Shirley Jackson's horror novel.

Netflix is making it the summer of Alfred Hitchcock in New York. The streaming giant will bring 36 Hitchcock films to its Paris Theater in New York, as well as a dozen more features connected to the director — from those he influenced (Robert Zemeckis’s What Lies Beneath) to those which influenced him (Fritz Lang’s M).
The series — Hitch! The Original Cinema Influencer — will run from May 16 to June 29 at the Paris Theater, which Netflix purchased in 2019. The films range from Hitchcock’s early works such as Blackmail to enduring hits such as Psycho and The Birds.
Thirty five of the films will play on 35 mm, including Birds, The Man Who Knew Too Much, North By Northwest, Rear Window and Vertigo. The New York Film Critics Circle is co-presenting the series.

Jean Marsh, who played Bavmorda, the evil queen in 1988’s Willow, and the head-swapping Mombi in 1985’s Return to Oz, has passed away.
Through her work in both Willow and Return to Oz, Jean Marsh left a genuine mark on young viewers, playing a biting antagonist that embodies the evil spirit which presses down on our heroes. Yet, her brief appearance via archival footage for the short-lived Willow series was a most welcome tribute. She would even earn a Saturn Award for Best Supporting Actress for Willow. And that she could stand out in Return to Oz – a movie crammed with nightmarish images – really says something.
Other notable big screen roles for Jean Marsh include 1980’s The Changeling, Alfred Hitchcock’s Frenzy (1972), horror film Dark Places (1973), and Joseph L. Mankiewicz’s epic Cleopatra (1963).
While most of us here may remember Jean Marsh for her work in film, she was predominantly featured on the small screen.

By the 1960s, director Alfred Hitchcock had been making films for decades. A holdover from the silent era, Hitchcock saw major changes in the film industry happen in real-time. And he was able to weather these hurdles to great success. However, in the mid-20th century, movies were changing once again and Hitchcock's films were perceived by some critics as becoming formulaic. Even though Hitchcock was still attracting some of the biggest talent of the day, he was certainly staying well within his niche. On top of his film career, the directorial icon was also juggling a hit TV by this point.

As one of the fathers of the thriller genre, Alfred Hitchcock mastered the art of suspense cinema through classics like Vertigo, Psycho and Rear Window. Focusing on themes of paranoia, mystery and deceit, his movies are among the most influential in film, with countless writers and directors seeking to channel his style. While many creators fall short of this, others have delivered excellent films that follow in the legend's footsteps.
Considering how many tropes Hitchcock helped pioneer in cinema, it's almost impossible to make a truly good mystery movie without drawing some parallels with the director. While some directors intentionally seek to evoke his best movies, others pursue original stories, only for their own love or inspiration from the creator to seep into its style. Regardless, people who love a good Hitchcock movie have plenty of great choices to watch.

Now that they’ve set the year’s best film for a December 10 debut, the Criterion Channel have unveiled the rest of next month’s selection. John Waters’ films are inseparable from John Waters’ presence, making fitting Criterion’s decision to pair an eight-film retrospective (Multiple Maniacs to Cecil B. Demented) with his own “Adventures in Moviegoing” wherein the director extols virtues of Bergman, Chabrol, Barbara Loden, and Samuel Fuller. His own Polyester will have a Criterion Edition alongside the Bob Dylan doc Don’t Look Back, an iconic film in its own right and, I think, fitting companion to The Unknown with Lon Chaney, also streaming on Criterion. No Country for Old Men and Election receive likewise treatment; the latter appears in “MTV Productions,” a series featuring Beavis and Butt-Head Do America, The Original Kings of Comedy, and (coming close to Freddy Got Fingered for least-expected 2024 addition) Jackass: the Movie.

With a list of new bosses to take down in Shadow of the Erdtree, learning how to defeat Midra, Lord of Frenzied Flame, is essential to completing the Elden Ring expansion. Frenzy was one of the many primordial forces in the base game, and the player could even choose to have it become the dominant order at the end.
Miyazaki has already stated that the events that occur in Shadow of the Erdtree will have no direct bearing on the story of the base game. Lore enthusiasts have a lot more to ponder over with the release of the expansion, and Midra has given us a better understanding of how the Flame of Frenzy operates within the world.

Barbara Leigh-Hunt, a British actor whose career included parts in Alfred Hitchcock’s film Frenzy and the BBC/PBS miniseries Pride & Prejudice, has died. She was 88 years old. Leigh-Hunt died peacefully at home in Aston Cantlow, England, on September 16, according to a funeral notice. In Frenzy, Leigh-Hunt played Brenda Blaney, a victim of the “Necktie Murderer” serial killer, who turns out to be a friend of Brenda’s ex-husband. Brenda’s sexual assault and murder in the 1972 film is considered the most graphic sequence of any Hitchcock picture, per The Hollywood Reporter. “I was invited out to Pinewood Studios to speak with Hitch for about half an hour,” she said in a 2017 BBC interview, recalling how she got the part. “To me, he was a cinematic god, but I was convinced it was a complete waste of time as I’d never even made a film. The following contains a mention of sexual assault.
Alfred Hitchcock was no stranger to thriller movies. He had a phenomenal gift of channeling and invoking great levels of suspense for the audience. Working with some of the greats, like Grace Kelly to Cary Grant, he sourced some of the best talents for his feature films, while executing original cinema. The strength of his films like North By Northwest and Rear Window paved the way for Hitchcock to take on his first official horror film, Psycho. When he directed Psycho, it forever changed the genre, leaving Hollywood to use it as the baseline for nearly every horror film that followed.
Alfred Hitchcock used his skills to manipulate the viewers through thrills and psychologically complex storytelling, while subverting the stringent parameters of the Hays code. The film also set the standard for all horror films to follow, leaving behind the previous styles before it.

In a career that lasted over 50 years, Alfred Hitchcock was never stymied by expectations, hampered by codes, or inhibited by good taste. He always found a way to navigate the morass of cultural mores, finding ecstatic freedom within societal strictures. The last of these aspects, edging past good taste, provide the tastiest, trashiest facets of the director's penultimate masterpiece, Frenzy, a 1972 film that brought Hitchcock astride the directors who were now finding their own form, who took great inspiration from the Master of Suspense, and added their own Freudian hang-ups into stark, bloody relief. Perhaps no other director embodies the power of suggestion quite like Hitchcock, but in 1972, audiences were already beginning to crave something more fleshy.
Hitchcock's taste for the macabrely allusive began in earnest with 1927's The Lodger: A Story of the London Fog, an early example of a mistaken identity story that would become a prominent element...

When putting together a list of the 25 Best Alfred Hitchcock Movies, it’s like plunging into a spectacular alternate universe of wit, verve, and style. The director of “Rear Window,” “Vertigo,” “North by Northwest,” and “Psycho” has a body of work so deep there are endless ways you can parse it: Maybe you could focus on his obsession with mothers, his approach to time, or the way food and painting pop up throughout his films.
But on a basic level, you also run into a challenge with Hitchcock you face with few other filmmakers, full-stop: The Master of Suspense is one of the rare directors to have a filmography with both the volume and the quality to credibly field a Top 25. With what other filmmakers can you do that? John Ford, certainly (Ford had the most films in our recent list of the 100 Greatest Westerns). Godard or Fassbinder perhaps? They...

The master of suspense is finally getting a 4K restoration for his final film.
Alfred Hitchcock’s “Frenzy,” which was also his sole R-rated feature, is being released at the Film Forum to celebrate its restoration. “Frenzy” stars Jon Finch, Barbara Leigh-Hunt, and Barry Foster; the feature is an adaptation of novel “Goodbye Piccadilly, Farewell Leicester Square,” released by Arthur La Bern in 1966. “Sleuth” playwright Anthony Shaffer adapted the book for Hitchcock’s 1972 film, which was Hitchcock’s second to last feature.
“Frenzy” follows a down-on-his-luck ex-Royal Air Force officer (Finch) who is on the run amid accusations of being The Necktie Strangler after his ex-wife is found dead. “Frenzy” is billed as Hitchcock’s penultimate film, and his first feature made in London after thirty years.
The official logline teases that “Frenzy” is Hitchcock’s “return to fiendish form and his most salacious, sordid picture.”

Netflix has debuted a set of images for the upcoming series ‘Kaos’ in which Jeff Goldblum plays the role of the all-powerful god, Zeus.
From ‘The End of the F*****g World’ creator, Charlie Covell, Kaos is an irreverent dramedy, inspired by Greek mythology (no degree in classics required!). A dysfunctional family (of gods) – cruel fathers, wayward sons, discontented wives and warring brothers – the series takes a fresh look at power structures and the idea of the 1%.
Zeus (Jeff Goldblum) is King of the gods: all-powerful yet desperately insecure. A megalomaniac in leisure wear, Zeus’s paranoia is ignited one day when he finds a new wrinkle on his forehead.
He becomes convinced that it is evidence of an ancient prophecy coming to pass: that he and the family of gods are going to fall from power. As he attempts to shore up his regime, Zeus makes dangerous enemies all over the place,...

"The Wicker Man" is the gold standard of occult horror. Police Sergeant Neil Howie (Edward Woodward), a God-fearing Englishman, arrives on the island of Summerisle to investigate the reported disappearance of a young girl. Howie soon discovers the islanders are pagans and spends the movie angrily berating them. Soon, it becomes clear the cultural differences are more sinister than the proper way to worship.
The islanders' crops are failing, so Lord Summerisle (Christopher Lee) has plotted a virgin sacrifice to appease their gods. No one ever said the virgin had to be a young girl; no, it's the unmarried Howie, who is burned to death in an excruciating sequence as the Summerisle villagers sing.
Despite being underserved by producer/distributor British Lion Films (to the point where Lee had to promote the film on his own time), "The Wicker Man" is now regarded as a horror classic. 2023 was the 50th anniversary of "The Wicker Man,...

1960 was a year that sent shockwaves throughout the film industry. Alfred Hitchcock, who was to direct Anna Massey twelve years later in his lurid thriller Frenzy – about a serial killer in central London – opened a movie called Psycho. Psycho was significant in several regards. Hitchcock refused to show the film to critics and barred his two leads, Anthony Perkins and Janet Leigh, from doing any promotional interviews as he wanted total control over the film’s publicity and its content. This was in June of 1960. Two months earlier another celebrated filmmaker had released an equally shocking film called Peeping Tom and whose critical reception ruined both the movie and the reputation of its director, Michael Powell. Hitchcock wanted audiences to judge Psycho for themselves. Most audiences never got a chance to evaluate Peeping Tom.
Both films were about serial killers and both showed the murderer as a self-effacing,...
