Gary Kent, an actor, director and, most notably, stuntman whose career is thought to have been an inspiration for Quentin Tarantino’s Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, died Thursday at an assisted care facility in Austin, Texas. He was 89.
Born on June 7, 1933, in Walla Walla, Washington, Kent’s early film credits include 1959’s Battle Flame, and roles in other low-budget films of the 1960s including The Black Klansman (1966) and biker film The Savage Seven (1968). In 1969, he served as a stunt double for Bruce Dern in the now-cult-classic Richard Rush-directed exploitation film Psych-Out.
Among his other credits were such drive-in movie favorites as Peter Bogdanovich’s first film Targets (1968), featuring Boris Karloff, 1970’s Hell’s Bloody Devils and, the following year, The Incredible 2-Headed Transplant and Angels’ Wild Women.

We’ve lost another Hollywood legend. The Hollywood Reporter has broken the news that cinematographer Bill Butler, best known for his work on the 1975 Steven Spielberg classic Jaws, has passed away at the age of 101. Butler died on Wednesday evening, according to the American Society of Cinematographers. He would have turned 102 on Friday – today.
Born on April 7, 1921 in Cripple Creek, Colorado, Butler earned his first entertainment industry credit by working as a camera operator on the 1959 film 1001 Arabian Nights. His first cinematographer credit came when his friend, director William Friedkin, hired him to shoot the 1962 TV movie The People vs. Paul Crump. He never attended film school, he just taught himself cinematography by watching movies and referring to the ASC manual. That approach definitely worked out for him. Over the next fifty-four years, he served as the cinematographer on eighty-four more projects, including Jack Nicholson’s Drive, He Said; The Bold Men,...

The legendary, Oscar-nominated cinematographer of Steven Spielberg’s horror classic Jaws, Bill Butler passed away Wednesday at the age of 101 years old, THR reports this morning.
The site notes, “He would have turned 102 on Friday.”
It was back in 1976 that Bill Butler was co-nominated for a “Best Cinematography” statue at that year’s Academy Awards for his work on One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest, a film released just one year after Butler served as Cinematographer on the horror classic Jaws.
“His iconic shots included the early dawn attack of the first victim that opens the film, the Vertigo-inspired dolly zoom that accompanies Chief Brody’s shock at witnessing a shark attack from the beach and the extreme close-ups of panicking swimmers,” THR explains, detailing Bill Butler’s integral role in the making of the game-changing summer blockbuster.

Yvonne Wilder, the actor known for her work in “West Side Story,” “Seems Like Old Times” and numerous TV shows, died Nov. 24 at her home in Los Angeles. She was 84.
Wilder played the role of Consuelo in Robert Wise’s landmark 1961 film adaptation of the Broadway musical “West Side Story.” She also appeared in the role of Anita in a West End production of “West Side Story” and in the first international touring production of the Leonard Bernstein-Stephen Sondheim musical.
Wilder was remembered by friends for her love of dancing and her fiery sense of humor. “West Side Story” co-star George Chakiris recently hailed her contributions to the stage production and the movie.
“Yvonne Wilder had an extraordinary, unique sense of humor. I did the play in London with Yvonne so I knew her before the movie,” George Chakiris told TCM in May. “But Yvonne’s humor was adopted by all of us.

We're back with our annual list of favorites here on Daily Dead, and keep in mind that we do things a bit differently here, so this isn't a traditional top ten movies list. Instead, we’re sharing our favorite genre experiences of the year, which could be a favorite movie, collectible, event, or person. Check back every day this week to find out what made the cut for the rest of the Daily Dead team.
What We Do in the Shadows: This vampire mockumentary was easily my favorite film of the year and works on multiple levels thanks to a creative team that loves horror as much as they do comedy. Their biggest accomplishment is creating such an incredible cast of characters that you don't even question the fact that they're vampires. Easily rewatchable and enjoyable for both horror and non-horror fans, I can't recommend this enough.

With humor and compassion, Silver Skies chronicles the unexpected developments that occur when a group of eccentric seniors have their lives turned upside down by the sale of their beloved apartment complex. A refreshingly original story about getting older and trying to hold tight to the American Dream, the film features a cast of much-loved screen icons: George Hamilton, Valerie Perrine, Barbara Bain, Jack McGee, Alex Rocco, Mariette Hartley, Jack Betts, and Howard Hesseman. Far from playing their usual roles, however, the actors fully inhabit characters of real complexity: Long-time pals Phil and Nick (Hamilton and McGee) tenderly...

Over at my other haunt, Sergio Leone and the Infield Fly Rule, there is currently posted, in honor of Halloween week, what I think are two very special treats (and possibly tricks). The first is a very challenging frame grab quiz in which readers are asked to guess the titles of 31 movies based on eerie images that may or may not be so easy to identify. The other is a special edition of the traditional interview-type quiz I occasionally come up devoted entirely to the harrowing world of horror. It features the usual batch of questions for which there are no wrong answers, only your answers, which makes it much more fun to fill out and especially to read. As usual, it’s taking me a while to get around to submitting my own answers to the quiz, but in the creeping shadow of the approaching holiday I thought I...

Scream Factory will be handling the release of the sequel and they sent over the official Blu-ray artwork, which includes a really cool piece of reversible cover art.

For those keeping an eye out for Count Yorga, Vampire, Twilight Time is handling that release and will also make their Blu-ray available on October 13th.
The image you see above is part of the reversible cover art, which I prefer, and and is based on the Australian daybill design, while the original Us cover art is being used as the main cover.

Most of the Daily Dead team knows of my undying and irrational love for Aip's Count Yorga, Vampire and The Return of Count Yorga. Starring Robert Quarry, I have fond memories of hunting down and finally watching these movies as a kid, and they've stuck with me ever since. Thankfully for Derek, Heather, and many others, they don't have to hear me talk about my need for Blu-rays, as both are getting the high-definition upgrade in October.

In celebration of Sound on Sight’s 7th anniversary, writers were asked to come up with articles that present their childhood favorites in the realm of films, TV shows, books or games.

Move that Thanksgiving feast to the couch, because you have a lot of Netflix-watching to do before December 1, when these movies will disappear from the streaming service. (But given how Netflix has worked in the past, they may be back at some point in the future.) Here they are, in alphabetical order, though if you only have a limited amount of time, can we steer you toward Spice World? No? Well, take your pick.1941 (1979)An Officer and a Gentleman (1982)The Apostle (1997)Audrey Rose (1977)The Believers (1987)Better Than Chocolate (1999)Blood & Chocolate (2007)The Boy in the Striped Pajamas (2008)Chaplin (1992)The Choirboys (1977)The Cockeyed Cowboys of Calico County (1970)Coffee and Cigarettes (2003)The Constant Gardener (2005)Count Yorga, Vampire (1970)The Return of Count Yorga (1971)Cry-Baby (1990)Dirty Dancing (1987)Double Indemnity (1944) En la Cama (2005)Event Horizon (1997)Eye for an Eye (1996)Fairy Tale: A True Story (1997)First Knight (1995)Five Easy Pieces (1970)Free Men (2011)Funny Lady...

Recent hot cinema topics such as the portrayal of the Mandarin character in Shane Black’s Iron Man 3 and speculations about what classic Star Trek villain Benedict Cumberbatch’s character in J.J Abrams’ Star Trek: Into Darkness was modeled after leading up to the film’s release, among others, underline the importance of great villains in genre cinema.
Creating a great cinematic villain is a difficult goal that makes for an incredibly rewarding and memorable viewer experience when it is achieved.
We’ll now take a look at the greatest film villains. Other writing on this subject tends to be a bit unfocused, as “greatest villain” articles tend to mix live-action human villains with animated characters and even animals. Many of these articles also lack a cohesive quality as they attempt to cover too much ground at once by spanning all of film history.

Looking at the Best Actor Academy Award nominations for the film year 2012, the one miss that clearly cries out for more attention is Liam Neeson’s powerful performance in Joe Carnahan’s excellent survival film The Grey, easily one of the best roles of Neeson’s career.
In Neeson’s case, his lack of a nomination was a case of neglect similar to the Albert Brooks snub in the Best Supporting Actor category for the film year 2011 for Drive(Nicolas Winding Refn, USA).
Along with negligence, other factors commonly prevent outstanding lead acting performances from getting the kind of critical attention they deserve. Sometimes it’s that the performance is in a film not considered “Oscar material” or even worthy of any substantial critical attention.

1. Night of the Creeps: Greg Nicotero has an uncredited role in this film as a zombie extra.
2. Ghostbusters: The role of Peter Venkman was originally written with John Belushi in mind.
3. The Vault of Horror: Even though the film’s title is taken from the classic comic book series, none of the segments are based off of stories from the comics.
4. The Shining: Danny Lloyd was unaware he was making a horror movie. It is said that Stanley Kubrick was protective of Danny and that he was told that they were making a drama.
5. Curse of Frankenstein: Christopher Lee and Peter Cushing became friends on the set of this film, but had actually been cast together earlier in Hamlet and Moulin Rouge.

Just a year after being impaled in the heart and turning to dust, the undead Romanian vampire came back in American International Pictures’ The Return Of Count Yorga, a largely superior sequel to 1970’s Count Yorga, Vampire (see Fango Flashback here). Strangely, no effort is made by the filmmakers (including returning director Bob Kelljan, who co-wrote the follow-up with actress Yvonne Wilder) to explain just how Yorga (Robert Quarry again in his most famous role) actually returns to life; ditto, his ugly valet Brudah (Edward Walsh), who we last saw being stabbed to death in his master’s mansion. In Return, they just show up for this second go-round of cultured vampire shenanigans.

If you have Netflix and are a horror fan in need of something to watch this Labor Day weekend, one look at this gargantuan list I compiled of the new terror titles Netflix has added for instant streaming in just the first three days of this month should keep you busy until Labor Day next year. You'll find something for everyone, from older titles to recent releases, famous to obscure, classic to not-so-classic, monsters to maniacs - you name it.
For the record, I considered compiling this list in alphabetical order or by year of the film's release, but then I realized I had already spent well over an hour just sorting through the massive catalogue of titles Netflix has now made available for instant streaming and realized Labor Day would be over by the time I finished arranging this list in any kind of order. Ready? Here you go.

Michael Pataki was a leading character actor from the 1960s, who was best known for his roles in cult horror films. Pataki starred as Caleb Croft, a vicious vampire rapist whose offspring (William Smith) seeks his destruction in 1974’s Grave of the Vampire, and was Count Dracula and his modern-day descendant Michael Drake in Albert Band’s cult classic Dracula’s Dog (aka Zoltan, Hound of Dracula).
Pataki was born in Youngstown, Ohio, on January 16, 1938. He studied drama and political science at the University of Southern California. He made his film debut in the late 1950s, and appeared frequently on television, often in villainous roles. He was featured in episodes of The Twilight Zone, Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea, My Favorite Martian, Batman as bat-villain King Tut’s henchman Amenophis Tewfik, Mission: Impossible, and Mr. Terrific. He starred as Korax, the Klingon, in the classic Star Trek episode “The Trouble with Tribbles,...

The titular gang of Rape Squad is not a squad of rapists but rather a group of rape victims who band together to get revenge on their attacker. Released in 1974, Rape Squad is a bad taste bonanza that wants to have it both ways in terms of mixing sexploitation and feminism and the result is a queasy film that’s politically incorrect in a way only possible in the mid 1970’s. Though written by a woman (Betty Conklin), the film’s blatant misogyny is poorly concealed with the most shallow of feminist themes. Sure, the women who comprise the Rape Squad talk the talk about women’s empowerment, but the filmmakers make sure they do so while topless in the hot tub! It’s an interesting look at the sexual politics of its time but Rape Squad is so wrong on so many levels. It’s not an easy film...
