Amid a difficult year for cinemas, is it the increasing cost of tickets that’s putting wider audiences off?
It’s a common refrain in positive reviews: ‘go and see this movie on the biggest screen you can find.’ Another variation: ‘It deserves to be seen with an audience.’
There’s truth to these sentiments – movies do have more impact on a big screen with proper surround sound. There’s also the anticipation and sense of occasion. Going to the cinema to watch a movie you’ve been desperate to see for months is an event. It’s exciting.
That excitement might be tempered somewhat, however, by the sheer cost. At a cinema near me, the price of a ticket to see a movie on a regular screen is £12.99. This is at Cineworld, where cardholders get a slight discount, making a ticket £11.69.
Here’s an odd thing, though: if I...

To clarify right away, James Bond, Jr. (Corey Burton), the title character from a barely-remembered 007-adjacent 1991 animated series, is not the son of James Bond. More confusingly, James Bond, Jr. is actually the nephew of James Bond. "He learned the game from his uncle James," the theme song makes very clear. This means that James Bond did indeed have a brother, but also that his brother was named James as well ...?
As of this writing, "James Bond Jr." is the only TV adaptation to date of Ian Fleming's ultra-popular James Bond book series. It came at a fascinating time in the history of the James Bond franchise, as Timothy Dalton's two-film run had come to an end, and a messy rights dispute behind the scenes kept Bond off the big screen for years. It also likely didn't help that the Berlin Wall fell in November of 1989, calling...

On Friday nights, IndieWire After Dark takes a feature-length beat to honor fringe cinema in the streaming age.
First, the spoiler-free pitch for one editor’s midnight movie pick — something weird and wonderful from any age of film that deserves our memorializing.
Then, the spoiler-filled aftermath as experienced by the unwitting editor attacked by this week’s recommendation.
The Pitch: A Smooth-Brained Boy and His Bright Blue Dog Escape Capitalism
I got my first gig as a professional journalist during the 2016 election. Since then, I’ve read and written countless variations on the same despairing lede. It’s a rambling list of the world’s gravest existential threats punctuated with a quip about something recent, specific, sensational, and typically terrible.
“Protesters may be flooding the pandemic-ridden streets while an insurrection takes place, the planet literally boils, and killer bees swarm Times Square…” some sad-sack news writer might begin. “But at...

Exclusive: Chase Stokes (Outer Banks) and Sydney Taylor (American Born Chinese) are set to topline the YA romance Marked Men from director Nick Cassavetes (The Notebook).
The film written by Sharon Soboil (After We Fell) is based on the New York Times and USA Today bestselling novel Rule by Jay Crownover — the first in her hit series Marked Men, which has been translated into 11 languages. It’s being sold worldwide by Voltage Pictures, which is currently placing it before buyers.
Taylor stars as Shaw Landon, who has loved Rule Archer (Stokes) from the moment she laid eyes on him. Rule, a fiery-tempered rebel tattoo artist, doesn’t have time for a good girl pre-med student like Shaw – even if she’s the only one who can see the person he truly is. She lives by other people’s rules; he makes his own. But a short skirt, too many birthday cocktails,...

May on the Criterion Channel will be good to the auteurs. In fact they’re giving Richard Linklater better treatment than the distributor of his last film, with a 13-title retrospective mixing usual suspects—the Before trilogy, Boyhood, Slacker—with some truly off the beaten track. There’s a few shorts I haven’t seen but most intriguing is Heads I Win/Tails You Lose, the only available description of which calls it a four-hour (!) piece “edited together by Richard Linklater in 1991 from film countdowns and tail leaders from films submitted to the Austin Film Society in Austin, Texas from 1987 to 1990. It is Linklater’s tribute to the film countdown, used by many projectionists over the years to cue one reel of film after another when switching to another reel on another projector during projection.” Pair that with 2008’s Inning by Inning: A Portrait of a Coach and your completionism will be on-track.

After mounting glitzy presentations to advertisers at a stately Lincoln Center auditorium for decades as part of the TV industry’s annual upfronts, Disney now plans a big break with Madison Avenue tradition.
The owner of ABC, ESPN and Hulu intends to ask advertisers and buyers to convene at a new, as-yet-undisclosed location where executives can interact with the company’s entire media portfolio in a more hands-on way, says Rita Ferro, president of Disney Advertising Sales.
“We need to modernize our presentation and how we show up,” Ferro told Variety. Doing so has become increasingly important as more advertisers look for ways to run commercials alongside video content that appears simultaneously across many kinds of media outlets and use data to purchase ad time with more precision. Ferro expects to invite advertisers to a new kind of Disney upfront showcase that is experiential in nature, she says. In the months ahead of the extravaganza,...

You’re never alone with an alien symbiote. Just ask Eddie Brock (Tom Hardy), whose body-roomie Venom is almost helpful in the kitchen in the new Venom: Let There Be Carnage trailer. But his counterpart Cletus Kasady (Woody Harrelson) only sees red, and is on a mission to wreak carnage. Meanwhile, he writer of the song in the Venom 2 trailer only wanted to bring some bittersweet pandemonium.
Harry Nilsson’s song “One” appeared on his 1968 album Aerial Ballet. The album title was a tribute to his grandparents, who were highwire circus act performers. It was the follow-up to his Pandemonium Shadow Show album, which got everybody talkin’ about the singer-songwriter from Brooklyn. When John Lennon and Paul McCartney were asked to name their favorite American group during their highly-covered 1968 press conference to announce the formation of The Beatles’ Apple Corps, each of the songwriting duo independently answered “Nilsson.”

If audiences enjoy waking up to Nitv’s Big Mob Brekky – Australia’s first ever Indigenous breakfast show – this week as part of Naidoc Week, Sbs director of Indigenous content Tanya Denning-Orman doesn’t rule out it becoming a permanent fixture in the future.
Hosted by Shahni Wellington and Ryan Liddle, the show premiered yesterday, broadcasting live from Sydney’s Taronga Zoo, and will run everyday until Friday.
“It’s an on-air pilot; that’s what we do at the channel,” Denning-Orman tells If.
“If Australians are wanting that different perspective, waking up to something different in the morning, with a bit of our cheekiness as a blackfellas – anything’s possible as part of Sbs.”
The decision to run the show stems from a desire to do something different after a year of heavy news content, as well as the current conversation around diversity in media.

CNN will provide six hours of coverage each night of the Democratic and Republican conventions, which will be nearly all virtual.
The network typically has a major presence at convention sites, setting up its own restaurant, the CNN Grill, to serve as a backdrop for its anchors and correspondents. The coronavirus crisis has forced both parties to cancel just about all events and speeches at the chosen convention cities, Milwaukee for the Democrats and Charlotte for Republicans, while networks are basing their coverage from their studios in New York and Washington.
CNN’s coverage will be from 8 Pm to 2 Am Et starting on Monday, when the Democratic National Convention starts and runs through Aug. 20. The Republican convention runs Aug. 24-27.

Continuing our series of writers picking out under-appreciated films is a recommendation for a gothic and visually spectacular fantasty
Among independent cinema’s many trends during the halcyon 1990s was the nostalgic revival of German expressionism and monochrome. Films such as Guy Maddin’s Tales from the Gimli Hospital, Ildikó Enyedi’s My 20th Century, Woody Allen’s Shadows and Fog, Christopher Nolan’s Following and Darren Aronofsky’s Pi, along with the music videos and art photography of Rocky Schenck and the short films of Jan Švankmajer, imagined the millennium’s last decade using the gothic palette of the 1920s.

‘The Beach.’
Filmmaker Warwick Thornton was mentally and physically exhausted last year so he decided to spend a couple of months in isolation on a remote beach on the north-west coast of Western Australia.
Seeing the potential for a documentary, Thornton and the producers, Michelle Parker, Mitchell Stanley and Tanith Glynn-Maloney, sent a three-page pitch document to Nitv and Screen Australia.
The result is The Beach, a lyrical, evocative six-part series which premieres on Nitv, Sbs and Sbs On Demand this Friday at 7.30 pm.
Across the three hours, the Sweet Country and Samson and Delilah writer-director sharpens his skills to hunt and gather food, prepares surprisingly exquisite dishes and talks to three chickens as he relates stories from his childhood and adult life.
“I was feeling a bit shitty, mentally and physically drained, and I needed a break,” he tells If. “There was an incredible trust between Nitv and Screen Australia to make it.

Spoiler Alert: Proceed with caution if you have not yet watched “John Mulaney and the Sack Lunch Bunch,” streaming now on Netflix.
Children’s entertainment based on “existential angst and fear” might not seem like a natural combination on the face of it, but according to John Mulaney, that combination’s fueled the genre for as long as he can remember.
“A lot of entertainment that I consumed as a kid had a lot of either melancholy or dread, and it was not some undertone,” the comedian tells Variety. “Even things like ‘I know an old lady who swallowed a fly’ — every part of that [song] is odd and disturbing!”

Harry Styles seems to be cribbing from another famous Harry in his new video for “Adore You”: Harry Nilsson. The cheeky, weird and magical video echoes, in part, Nilsson’s equally storybook-esque concept album-film, early Seventies masterpiece The Point!
Style’s video centers around a figurative (and literal) fish out of water: the only boy in the dour Isle of Eroda who can smile and his unnamed fish pal. Nilsson’s film follows a similar conceit: It’s about round-headed boy named Oblio who lives in a Pointed Village where everyone has pyramid heads,...

Tons of songs become baseball stadium classics, even if they don’t start out that way: Neil Diamond’s “Sweet Caroline,” Gary Glitter’s “Rock & Roll Part 2,” the list goes on. Harry Nilsson aimed to go straight to the ballgame with his own sports anthem, “Yo Dodger Blue.”
“Dad was devoted to this team ever since they were the Brooklyn Dodgers,” his son Kiefo tweeted of the track, which was included on the singer-songwriter’s posthumous album, Losst and Founnd, a collection of material Nilsson recorded at the end of his career.

A year before Harry Nilsson achieved commercial success with 1971’s Nilsson Schmilsson, the late singer-songwriter released The Point!, a whimsical concept album that tells the story of a round-headed boy named Oblio who lives in a Pointed Village. As you may have guessed, the rest of the residents have conical heads.

MSNBC has canceled “Saturday Night Politics With Donny Deutsch” after a 13-episode summer run.
The show first premiered in May and ran just shy of four months, with its final episode airing on Aug. 17. MSNBC will fill the hourlong Saturday slot with reruns of Chris Hayes’s weeknight show, “All In.” Meanwhile, Deutsch will still make appearances on the network’s “Morning Joe” and “Deadline White House” shows, Deutsch tweeted on Thursday.
“Saturday Night Politics” marks Deutsch’s fifth canceled TV hosting gig. Prior to his MSNBC show, Deutsch played a comedic version of himself on USA’s “Donny!” until 2016, hosted CNN’s “(Get to) The Point” for a week in 2013, and led CNBC’s “The Big Idea With Donny Deutsch” from 2004-2008. He also briefly hosted MSNBC’s “America the Angry” in 2010 but was pulled from the air following a segment criticizing the political and sports commentator Keith Olbermann.
Griffin, who herself suffered fallout last year after posing for a photo with what appeared to be the decapitated head of Donald Trump, took to Twitter to urge Bee to stand firm amid the outrage.
“. @iamsambee please do not apologize,” Griffin tweeted.

Get in touch to send in cinephile news and discoveries. For daily updates follow us @NotebookMUBI.Recommended VIEWINGSteven Spielberg has new movie coming out soon. No, not the prestige drama The Post, soon in limited release for Oscar season, but rather his upcoming Ready Player One, an adaptation of Ernest Cline’s Vr-themed sci-fi novel. A great idea, surely, but now that CGI can render the fantastic and unlikely with (seemingly) so little effort, doesn't that negate the very sense of fantasy and the thrill of imagination? At any rate, we'll be there front and center.Speaking of thrills on a different scale, after Unknown (2011), Non-Stop (2014), and Run All Night (2014), director Jaume Collet-Serra and re-invented B-film action star Liam Neeson have another genre film for us in The Commuter, which looks every bit as lean and expert as their previous collaborations.Recommended READINGWe're eagerly anticipating the release of Paul Thomas Anderson's new film,...

You don't have to be a kid to love animation. That's what Studio Ghibli, Ari Folman and other modern day pioneers of the form are proving time and again. Earlier this week, AFI Fest screened "Waltz with Bashir" director Folman's upcoming "The Congress," in which Robin Wright plays herself in a half live-action, half animated Faustian sci-fi of genius, mystery and ragged beauty. Ignore the critical pans and see "The Congress" when Drafthouse Films releases it on VOD in January. Until then, catch up on your experimental animated films with these five essentials you can stream now. Clips after the jump.1. Harry Nilsson: The Point (SnagFilms) Under the direction of Fred Wolf, untouchable singer/songwriter Harry Nilsson was inspired to develop this 1971 film companion to his album after an eye-opening acid trip. And it certainly shows in this delirious bedtime fable and creepy cartoon about a kingdom of pointy-headed creatures.

Last fall, Chicago-based one-man band Netherfriends released Netherfriends Does Nilsson, an album of original songs made entirely of Harry Nilsson samples. Sure, that’s a little convoluted, but it worked, especially on trippy tracks like “Full Of It,” featuring Chicago rapper Show You Suck. The video for “Full Of It,” released just this week, is made up of clips from the animated movie The Point!, which Nilsson famously came up with while tripping balls. It’s a colorful, angular companion to track that’s pretty psychedelic in its own right. In fact, it’s the perfect cut to play for ...

Dawn Landes, Andrew Bird, Nada Surf and DeVotchKa are among the eight artists to contribute to Songs From The Point!, a new compilation reinventing the music from Harry Nilsson's cult-classic cartoon musical. After its 1971 debut as a made-for-tv movie on ABC, The Point! amassed an adoring following for the sweet soundtrack composed by Nilsson, the songwriter who had previously released a handful of his own albums and written songs for the likes of The Monkees and Three Dog Night.
