Stars: Paul Rudd, Carrie Coon, Finn Wolfhard, Mckenna Grace, Kumail Nanjiani, Patton Oswalt, Celeste O’Connor, Logan Kim, Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd, Ernie Hudson, Annie Potts, William Atherton, James Acaster | Written by Gil Kenan, Jason Reitman | Directed by Gil Kenan
The Ghostbusters are back in New York for the second instalment of the sequel-slash-reboot series, following 2021’s Ghostbusters: Afterlife. This time round, it’s directed by Gil Kenan, who co-wrote both Afterlife and Frozen Empire with Jason Reitman. Effectively energised by the New York setting, the sequel has evidently learned from the disastrous mistakes of the previous film and emerges as an entertaining adventure in its own right, though it’s not entirely without problems.
Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire jumps right into the Ghostbusting action, with the new team – former science teacher Gary Groobersom (Paul Rudd), Callie Spengler (Carrie Coon) and her two teenage children Trevor (Finn Wolfhard) and Phoebe (Mckenna Grace...

It’s been almost forty years since Ghostbusters introduced the plucky foursome fumbling their way through spectral encounters, using a now iconic Manhattan firehouse as their operations base. Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire, set two years after the events of Ghostbusters: Afterlife, further entrenches the Spengler family and newcomers into the franchise by returning to where it all began: New York City. Frozen Empire offers familiar set pieces, references, and easter eggs aplenty, but the nostalgia tank is now running on empty.
Phoebe (Mckenna Grace), Trevor (Finn Wolfhard), mom Callie (Carrie Coon), and stepdad Gary (Paul Rudd) have adjusted well to life as Ghostbusters in the rundown yet classic firehouse. So well, in fact, that their latest paranormal capture caused enough city damage to put them in the crosshairs of Walter “Dickless” Peck (William Atherton). That’s not the only source of trouble for the new team; the firehouse’s containment unit is at capacity and struggling.

Experimental metal act Boris have announced a split album with fellow veteran Japanese band Coaltar of the Deepers. The LP, titled hello there, arrives March 22nd.
Both acts formed in the early 90s, and Boris member Takeshi has cited Coaltar of the Deepers’ shoegaze sound as an influence on his own band. The two previously collaborated in 2019 when Boris covered Coaltar of the Deepers’ 2007 song “To the Beach” for their tears EP. Boris’ version was produced by Coaltar of the Deepers singer-guitarist Narasaki.
The upcoming album features six songs, with Boris commenting that the concept is to “present newly recorded self-covers of past songs to today’s listeners,” as well as “a new attempt to specify songs to the other band and cover each other’s songs.”
The LP contains three Coaltar of the Deepers tracks, including new versions of two of their songs and a cover of a Boris...

Three decades after the fall of the Soviet Union, an emerging generation of filmmakers born and raised in the independent countries of Central Asia is giving an exhilarating charge to the region’s cinema and helping to put their unheralded industries on the map.
Leading Kazakh film critic Gulnara Abikeyeva says these “children of independence” are bringing a “new attitude” to the screen and giving a jolt of energy to emerging industries that for decades were under Moscow’s thumb.
“The production of films is growing very fast in all Central Asian countries,” she says. “There have appeared so many young production studios who can make movies with public or private money.”
With the collapse of the Soviet Union, what Abikeyeva describes as the “euphoria of freedom” caught hold across its former Central Asian republics, which include Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan, Turkmenistan and Tajikistan. Filmmakers who previously had to submit their...

Every year since its creation in 1956, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS) invites the film industries of various countries to submit their best film for the Academy Award for Best International Feature Film. The category was previously called the Best Foreign Language Film, but this was changed in April 2019 to Best International Feature Film, after the Academy deemed the word “Foreign” to be outdated.
The award is presented annually by the Academy to a feature-length motion picture produced outside the United States that contains primarily non-English dialogue. For the 96th Academy Awards, the submitted motion pictures must be first released theatrically in their respective countries between December 1, 2022, and October 31, 2023. The deadline for submissions to the Academy was October 2, 2023, and 92 countries submitted a film. The 15-film shortlist will be announced on December 21, 2023, followed by the official nominations on January 23, 2024.

Oscar voters in the Best International Feature Film category have received their group assignments for this year’s initial round of voting, with 89 films included on the seven lists that the Academy has sent to members.
The lists, which were obtained by TheWrap, include presumed favorites “The Zone of Interest” (United Kingdom), “The Taste of Things” (France), “The Promised Land” (Denmark) and “Perfect Days” (Japan), along with a number of documentaries, among them Estonia’s “Smoke Sauna Sisterhood,” Brazil’s “Pictures of Ghosts” and Ukraine’s “20 Days in Mariupol.”
The 89 films are four short of the record of 93 qualifying films in the category. The list of group assignments does not make up the Academy’s official list of eligible films; it’s possible that assigned films might still fail to qualify before first-round voting begins on Dec. 18. While Greta Gerwig’s girl-power blockbuster “Barbie” is ruling over the French box office, another much younger female-led franchise, “Miraculous: Ladybug & Cat Noir” has managed to pull approximately €8 million ($8.9 million) at the local B.O., from more than 1.1 million tickets, since bowing on July 5.
Budgeted around $80 million and directed by Jeremy Zag, “Miraculous: Ladybug & Cat Noir” ranks as one of France’s most ambitious animated films to date.
Featuring eight original songs and a postcard-worthy Parisian backdrop, the musical film broke ground as the first female-powered superhero movie set in the French capital. Even as it faces stiff competition from “Barbie” and Christopher Nolan’s “Oppenheimer,” “Miraculous: Ladybug & Cat Noir” has enough legs to match or surpass recent non-u.S. animated hits such as “Ballerina,” which sold 1.8 million tickets in France. It garnered 318,144 admissions on its opening day in theaters, a record for a French animated film. In Germany, the...

Air (Ben Affleck)
Sonny Vaccaro knows his basketball. As played with reliable conviction by Matt Damon, the head scout in Nike’s dwindling hoops division has a keen eye for the next great players, attending high school all-star tournaments around the country and scanning for potential endorsements. But Sonny is also a gambler, and on the tail end of his trips he jets over to Las Vegas to lock in a couple parlays, betting on NBA money lines and spreads before throwing all his winnings away at the craps table a minute later. You get the sense this has become his beleaguered ritual. At some point those basketball instincts and his penchant to go for broke will align and finally pay off.

Online Concert Record
A weekend concert by Hong Kong acting and singing superstar Andy Lau Tak-wah attracted a record-breaking 350 million viewers on Douyin, the mainland Chinese sister company of TikTok. The concert ran for two hours and attracted 100 million viewers in the first 30 minutes, with tens of millions more joining by the end. The figures beat Lau’s own previous record on the platform, which he set in July last year at a concert to celebrate his 40 years in the business. The South China Morning Post said the record numbers were swelled by a recent wave of nostalgia for Canto-pop or Cantonese-language contemporary music, though the paper also noted that Lau also performed a couple of Mandarin-language classics.

Tokyo prosecutors Tuesday arrested two executives of publisher and film production giant Kadokawa on suspicion of funneling bribes totaling to Takahashi Haruyuki, the former director of the Organizing Committee for the Tokyo Olympics and Paralympics.

As the global film industry emerges from the worst of the pandemic — and wide-ranging consolidation in the U.S. puts studio and streaming strategies in disarray — representatives for CAA, UTA and WME Independent say international distributors are more important than ever to their businesses.
That claim will be put to the test at this week’s Cannes Film Festival, where a chaotic domestic landscape, and the absence of China and Russia, could put other international distributors in a good spot after a pandemic-fueled streaming boom saw global deals for films like “Coda” cut these players out.
“What we know is that people who are going into the marketplace are setting up their movies not relying on the U.S. market presenting itself,” one senior agent tells Variety. “I’m not going to say it’s as bad as Russia and China, but really, in their financing plan, there’s a...

For 45 years, the Rolling Stones’ Love You Live has been one of rock’s greatest teases. About 75 percent of the double LP was recorded in arenas and stadiums during the band’s 1976 tour, and presented competent but rarely exhilarating or necessary renditions of concert warhorses and deep cuts. But tucked away (on side three) were four songs cut at Toronto’s tiny El Mocambo club in March 1977, when the Stones played a surprise set billed as “The Cockroaches.”

Amy Pond and Rory Williams are perhaps the most beloved companions the Doctor ever had. Their evolution on screen in terms of character development is among the most extensive character evolutions of the show. For those that haven’t met the Ponds, let’s discuss who they are and how exactly they have evolved in the “Doctor Who” series.
Who Are Amy Pond and Rory Williams?
Amy Pond and Rory Williams, collectively known in the series as The Ponds, were the companions and in-laws to Matt Smith’s Eleventh Doctor. Though they’re husband and wife, they’re referred to as The Ponds due to Rory’s timid personality compared to Amy’s confidence and decisiveness — hence the fans’ joke that Rory should’ve taken Amy’s last name.

In the grand old splattered hallways of slasher horror movies, few franchises are as up and down and all around as that of The Texas Chainsaw Massacre. Since Tobe Hooper terrified us back in 1974 with, what is still, one of the greatest and most terrifying, raw and sadistic horror films ever made, there have been numerous attempts to match this landmark original.
Some have drawn cult fandom, some continue to fiercely divide (Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Next Generation), some are just plain terrible (2017’s Leatherface) or meh (Texas Chainsaw Massacre 3: Leatherface) and some are rather underrated if very flawed attempts at taking the lore elsewhere while remaining somewhat true (Texas Chainsaw 3D). But now, ol’ Leatherface faces his next challenge, and most frightening…social media!

The path to global music stardom used to be pockmarked with potholes. Artists would have to scratch out regular radio play in their home countries before having a shot at international recognition, and even then, finding your way into the ears of fans from Argentina to Zambia wasn’t a guarantee. You needed to be discovered, and that wasn’t always easy.
Spotify’s Radar program is changing all that. The streaming service’s international emerging artist program aims to introduce a global community of fans to breakout artists that...

Years in the making! The glory of MGM on parade! Enough studio resources to film twenty pictures were expended on this paean to showman Florenz Ziegfeld. It’s really Metro Goldwyn Mayer’s Technicolor valentine to itself, showing off the studio’s enormous stable of musical talent, along with various of its comic performers. Arthur Freed and Louis B. Mayer’s notion of ‘something for everyone’ results in weird stack of grandiose musical numbers and mostly weak comedy. The biggest draw is the incredible color cinematography that peeks through in three or four jaw-droppingly elaborate musical spectacles. The picture is a workout to find the artistic limits of the Technicolor system.

For his first re-teaming sans Ginger, Fred Astaire hot-foots it to MGM and the waiting tap & sweep partner Eleanor Powell, already a terrific box office draw in her own right. These were the days when the caliber of talent in Hollywood justified the exalted, glamorous aura of star status. The story is a backstage mixup with sidebar singing and joke acts, decent dialogue and not much else. But when these two alight on a dance floor — not just ‘a’ dance floor but an enormous expanse of glittering glass — Hollywood hits a too-glamorous-to-be-real peak. The music by Cole Porter includes Begin the Beguine. Just-okay George Murphy is the third wheel on this musical bicycle, with Frank Morgan serving as fuddy-duddy comic relief.

The Notebook Primer introduces readers to some of the most important figures, films, genres, and movements in film history.Above: 42nd StreetWhile other genres undoubtedly advanced with the dawning of sound technology, the musical is likely the most indebted to the reverberations of this complementary process. More than that, though, the movie musical was fundamentally born with the surge of sound—it simply could not have existed otherwise. And since that time, the musical has indeed been a uniquely cinematic venture, less beholden to conventional narratives and often disposed to experimentations in color, location, camera mobility, production design, and special effects. Especially in its heyday, the so-called “Golden Age” lasting between the mid-1930s and late-‘50s, Hollywood musicals were an enrapturing experience, delighting audiences with spectacle, romance, athleticism, fine performances, and, of course, song and dance. Some of America’s brightest stars sparkled in the musical, while many of...

Innovative and acclaimed British director Alan Parker, died Friday, July 31, after a lengthy, but as yet undisclosed illness, according to Variety. He was 76.
Parker was nominated for two Best Director Oscars. One of those films was 1988’s Mississippi Burning, which highly dramatized the investigation of three murdered civil rights activists in 1964. The films starred Willem Dafoe and Gene Hackman, with the latter being nominated for Best Actor. Parker’s first Oscar nomination though came for the 1978 drama Midnight Express, another film based on true events. Oliver Stone won his first Oscar for the screenplay, which focused on Billy Hayes, who escaped a Turkish prison after being convicted of trying to smuggle hashish out of the country. Giorgio Moroder also won his first Oscar for composing the music. It was Parker’s second feature, and it was vastly different from his debut.

Rapping/singing act Bars and Melody, a fan favorite from “Britain’s Got Talent,” was jaw-droppingly eliminated during Monday’s fourth episode of “America’s Got Talent: The Champions.” Leondre “Bars” Devries and Charlie “Melody” Lenehan were just kids when they auditioned in front of Simon Cowell and Alesha Dixon across the pond, eventually making it to third place in 2014. For their American debut on “The Champions,” the boys took on an original song that failed to impress the judges. In fact, Howie Mandel even slammed his hand down on his red “X” — how rude! Watch Bars and Melody’s performance video above.
“Here’s my thing,” Howie explained, “This is ‘Champions’ and that didn’t seem like a championship song. It didn’t seem like anything I haven’t seen before. That’s something I might watch on YouTube, but not really on a big stage.” Cue the boos from the studio audience.

The Belgian filmmaking duo who made their name with short films such as With Thelma and Lucha Libre have started shooting their first full-length work. Renowned for the highly graphic and fantastical universes of their short films, the duo composed of Raphaël Balboni and Ann Sirot are commencing filming today, 8 July, on their first full-length picture, A Moonstruck Life, a bittersweet comedy on semantic dementia, starring Jean Le Peltier (who also featured in their short films), Jo Deseure (Un homme à la mer) and Lucie Debay. The film follows in the footsteps of Alex, who’s in his thirties, and those of Suzanne, his mother, who’s an elegant and charismatic lady in her sixties and the director of a contemporary arts centre in Brussels. But, little by little, Suzanne starts dropping the ball, and...

Big star Gary Cooper kids his screen image as an infallible hero in a western that almost plays as a screwball comedy, complete with the ultimate grouchy sidekick, William Demarest. Loretta Young’s attraction to Coop’s goofy ‘bronc stomper’ seem glowingly authentic. The jokes are funny, and the sentiment feels real, right up to the unexpectedly violent ending. . . for 1945, that is.

His output can sometimes be a little too “American Apparel” (if you know what I mean), but you’d be hard-pressed to argue Wes Anderson lacks cinephilia. And since his filmography has markings that range from Jean Vigo (Rushmore) to British ’60s animation (Fantastic Mr. Fox), it’s a given that his next, Moonrise Kingdom, will also be taking some high-brow cues. (You can glean it just from the trailer, for God’s sake.)
When speaking with EW, the corduroy-loving filmmaker revealed such influences in a rather open, expected fashion. This time out, the map-hopping titles we can try and (inevitably) cite are Ken Loach‘s 1979 film Black Jack, the Alan Parker-scripted Melody, and François Truffaut‘s Small Change. (Fun fact: Steven Spielberg convinced his Close Encounters actor to alter the film’s proper American title, Pocket Money, since it was already taken by a little-seen Paul Newman vehicle...

While we had our ideas about the possible influences on Wes Anderson's "Moonrise Kingdom" after watching and deconstructing the trailer -- Jean-Luc Godard's "Le Pierrot Fou" and "Little Fugitive" -- the director himself has gone ahead and cleared up the movies that were in his mind when he set out to make the film.
“There’s two movies that I really love that were both kind of huge inspirations for 'Moonrise Kingdom,' ” Anderson told EW. “One is a movie called 'Black Jack' that’s directed by Ken Loach. The other one is another British movie that’s the first thing Alan Parker ever did. He wrote the script. It’s called 'Melody.' They’re both movies that I only found as I worked on this story. I was looking for movies that are about pre-teenage romance. And there’s a Truffaut movie 'Small Change.

Two of the most eagerly anticipated films of 2012 would have to be Wes Anderson's Moonrise Kingdom, set to open Cannes on May 16, and Ridley Scott's Prometheus, opening wide in early June. For Entertainment Weekly, Rob Brunner gets a few words with Edward Norton and Anderson, who tells him that there are "two movies that I really love that were both kind of huge inspirations for Moonrise Kingdom. That's really one of the inspirations for this movie, because it's what made me start thinking about doing this sort of story.

There’s no other way to put it: Wes Anderson’s latest film, Moonrise Kingdom, is extremely Wes Anderson-y: quirky, warm-hearted, and visually stunning. Starring newcomers Jared Gilman and Kara Hayward, the movie is about a couple of pre-teen runaways who are pursued by a scout master (Edward Norton), a local police officer (Bruce Willis), and the girl’s parents (Bill Murray and Frances McDormand). We recently talked to Anderson and Norton about the film.
