Glen Powell found fame and worldwide love for starring alongside Tom Cruise in the 2022 film Top Gun: Maverick. Portraying the character of Lt. Jake ‘Hangman’ Seresin, Powell found his breakthrough role but not before failing countless times in Hollywood!

Despite being a hunk of a man, Powell had quite some troubles during his initial days in Hollywood. With the actor noting that many famous and notable roles were almost in his hands, Powell could have gone on to fight Thanos in the Marvel Cinematic Universe!

David Guglielmo doesn’t have an acting background, but he has an empathy and understanding for actors that serves him – and others – as a casting director. It might come from his background as a writer/director, which he notes is a form of performance in many ways. “When you’re writing, you’re every character. You’re feeling those emotions and traveling with them,” he notes. “And when you direct, you have to speak the langue of actors, to understand where they’re coming from and what they need.” He adds that nothing compares to a great performance. “Even if you watch a movie that’s a little rough around the edges, if the acting is there, it’s going to pull you in. And it can be one of the most powerful experiences you can have in art.”

As expansive and iconic as its title suggests, Sergio Leone’s Once Upon a Time in the West certainly seemed to be written in John Ford’s blood, from the vast wide-angle visions of Monument Valley that Leone and cinematographer Tonino Delli Colli luxuriated in, to the railroad-based, future-of-America economic landscape that serves as a backdrop to a number of bandit-versus-bandit power plays. Henry Fonda, with that methodical, stately stroll of his and those killer blue eyes barely visible from under the rim of his hat, can be seen and heard throughout, sending a shiver of great nostalgia up one’s spine. Ripened and tanned by years of desert sunlight, Ford’s Wyatt Earp is back in the saddle again.
But that particular pace and posture that Fonda had become known for in such films as My Darling Clementine, matched with the devious glint in those baby blues, now took...

James Mangold has had an interesting filmography over the years venturing in various genres and not typecasting himself to a certain type of filmmaker. Films like Girl Interrupted, Walk the Line, 3:10 to Yuma, Logan, and Ford v Ferrari proved that Mangold could competently handle various genres with great relatability and emotional heft.
James Mangold most recently directed Indiana Jones And The Dial Of Destiny
Mangold continued venturing into blockbuster studio filmmaking with 2023’s Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny which did not fare well. He is set to direct an upcoming Star Wars film and franchise producer Simon Emanuel seemingly revealed the film’s title. Ironically, the title has a striking resemblance to an important element of Dune, adding to the discourse of Star Wars being a Dune rip-off.

[This story contains spoilers for Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes.]
Kevin Durand is all smiles right now. The Thunder Bay native doesn’t have the energy of an actor who’s nearly three decades into their career. If you didn’t know any better, his enthusiasm would lead you to believe that he’s a wide-eyed and bushy-tailed newcomer. With recent projects like Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes, Abigail and the upcoming reboot of The Naked Gun, it’s understandable why Durand is savoring this moment that harks back to when Lost introduced his unforgiving mercenary Martin Keamy in season four (2008).
With Wes Ball’s Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes outperforming opening weekend box office expectations at $58.4 million, the long-term outlook for the sci-fi franchise is rather sunny right now, and despite his cliff-falling ending, Durand is not ruling out a return for his baddie, Proximus Caesar.
“Does Proximus crawl out of that ocean?...

Exclusive: Francis Galluppi (The Last Stop in Yuma County) has been tapped to write and direct a new Evil Dead movie for Sam Raimi and Robert Tapert’s Ghost House Pictures, sources tell Deadline.
The project is described only as an original story that Galluppi developed and brought to Raimi and team. No word on a plot or who all will be producing, as it’s early days here.
In a statement to Deadline, Rami did tell us, “Francis Galluppi is a storyteller who knows when to keep us waiting in simmering tension and when to hit us with explosive violence. He is a director that shows uncommon control in his feature debut.”
Evil Dead is, of course, Raimi’s horror franchise going back to 1981’s same-name film starring Bruce Campbell as Ash Williams, a combatant of various supernatural entities. That pic grew into a trilogy, also spurring the creation...

The procedural shows have been popular with viewers for many years. Projects dedicated to the work of firefighters and other emergency personnel offer a 50-minute dose of drama and action.
Chicago Fire creators Michael Brandt and Derek Haas have been writing together since the 1990s. They sold their first script while Brandt was working as an assistant editor on Robert Rodriguez's The Faculty in 1998, but their first known project came five years later, a Fast and Furious sequel. Another famous film of the duo is the western 3:10 to Yuma with Russell Crowe and Christian Bale.
So, Brandt and Haas definitely know a thing or two about quality scripts.

Before Ryan Reynolds sliced his way into box office lore with Deadpool’s razor-sharp wit, another beloved actor was only a claw’s length away from making R-rated comic book history. Yes, Hugh Jackman and director James Mangold intended to immortalize The Wolverine as the first mature audience-oriented spectacle in the X-Men universe.
Consider this: it is 2013, and the cinematic world is enthralled by PG-13, effects-laden marvels like The Avengers, whose paint is still drying on its vibrant canvas.
Even though Fox steered the ship towards safer waters, could anyone have predicted how Mangold’s unrealized vision would paradoxically give The Wolverine a cutting edge that allowed it to cut through the din of its competitors?

Up until recently I worked the night shift in a hotel, so I know how creepy it can feel at times, especially when you’re getting used to the place with all of the building’s odd little noises and quirks. That’s the position Gwen finds herself in.
Recently moved into the area and in need of money, she’s answered an ad for a temporary overnight position at the All Tucked Inn. The owner Teddy, who seems to be making his story up as he goes along, tells her the woman who regularly does the job has been sidelined with medical issues. He’d love to stay and help, but he has a date. But there’s nothing to worry about, this is a quiet, peaceful place where nothing ever happens.

A decade before Knight and Day was released, a movie like it would have killed with audiences: Come on, it starred Tom Cruise and Cameron Diaz and looked to perfectly mash humor and action in a way that so few male/female-led action-comedies had for years. Yet, it didn’t connect. But why? There are a lot of reasons, really, and not just, as Roy Miller would say, “one of those things.” Through lousy marketing, hokey promotion, poorly timed sneak previews, and even Katie Holmes, Knight and Day fizzled, less “beautiful dress” than beautiful mess…But it did at least inspire a Bollywood remake, so suck on that, Vanilla Sky! Let’s find out: What Happened to this Movie?!

Update, 2:37 Pm: Hannah Gutierrez-Reed’s fate out of the fatal October 2021 shooting of Rust cinematographer Halyna Hutchins could be decided before the end of the week.
The armorer’s involuntary manslaughter trial could go to the jury for deliberations as soon as Wednesday, it was revealed at the end of Tuesday’s testimony in the Santa Fe County courthouse.
“You can expect closing arguments to commence tomorrow morning,” Judge Mary Marlowe Sommer told the courtroom Tuesday before releasing jurors after a grueling but shorter-than-expected day. “Not right away — the defense is still putting on their case — but when the defense is finished, then we will do closing arguments.”
Gutierrez-Reed is charged with involuntary manslaughter and evidence tampering and faces up to three years in state prison if found guilty by the jury of seven women and five men.

Some apotheosis of film culture has been reached with Freddy Got Fingered‘s addition to the Criterion Channel. Three years after we interviewed Tom Green about his consummate film maudit, it’s appearing on the service’s Razzie-centered program that also includes the now-admired likes of Cruising, Heaven’s Gate, Querelle, and Ishtar; the still-due likes of Under the Cherry Moon; and the more-contested Gigli, Swept Away, and Nicolas Cage-led Wicker Man. In all cases it’s an opportunity to reconsider one of the lamest, thin-gruel entities in modern culture.

I don’t know of many Christmas horror adaptations. Sure, I could probably look at the history of Krampus and piece something together but other than that I’m hard pressed so let me know in the comments what I could cover next holiday season. Winter in general has all sorts of movies and stories that they are based off of. The very first episode of this show was all about The Thing and its source material Who Goes There and now in the middle of winter, at least in Colorado, I think it’s time to look at one of the better vampire properties of the 2000s and a great limited series comic. 30 Days of Night was originally pitched as a movie but when it was turned down, the comic came out and put the author’s name on the map. As is the nature of Hollywood, it...

Warner Bros. is building its own galaxy that is far, far away.
The studio has picked up the rights to Alien Legion, a star-spanning, sci-fi comic initially published by Marvel Comics, with the aim of building a homegrown space opera franchise.
Tim Miller, who directed the original Deadpool as well as Terminator: Dark Fate, is attached to direct.
Don Murphy and Susan Montford of Angry Films, the banner whose credits include Transformers and Real Steel, will produce along with Aaron Ryder.
Legion was co-created by Carl Potts, a former editor and writer at Marvel, and was introduced as part of the publisher’s creator-owned imprint, Epic Comics, in 1983. It became the line’s longest-running title, even outliving the imprint when it was moved to other publishers in the 21st century. Alan Zelenetz and Frank Cirocco are the other co-creators.

After the debacle that was Batman & Robin, George Clooney needed to find the kind of role that would rehabilitate his reputation as an actor. In Out of Sight, Clooney led an outstanding ensemble cast that included Jennifer Lopez, Don Cheadle, Catherine Keener, Albert Brooks, Ving Rhames, Nancy Allen, and Dennis Farina. It turned out to be a good career move for Clooney — the movie got fantastic reviews and, although it wasn’t a huge box-office hit at the time, has become a cult classic over the years. Max’s first full month without ‘HBO’ in its rebranded title has a selection that kicks off summer 2023 in fine fashion. Three of the four iterations of “A Star Is Born,” including the most recent remake starring Bradley Cooper and Lady Gaga, are streaming on Max in June. The 1954 and 1976 films land June 1, while the 2018 version arrives June 8.
To prepare for Margot Robbie’s performance in “Barbie” come July, one could watch one of her more intense roles as Tonya Harding in “I, Tonya” (2017). For some lighter summer watches, viewers might consider “Dolphin Tale” (2010), “Grease” (1978), “Hairspray” (2007) or “Tooth Fairy” (2010).
“Magic Mike’s Last Dance” (2023) starring Channing Tatum and Salma Hayek Pinault lands at Max after its theatrical release in February this year. Another major theatrical release from 2022, “Avatar: The Way of Water” (2022), swims onto the streamer starting June 7.

Exclusive: Kevin Durand (Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes) is the newest addition to the cast of the as-yet-untitled monster thriller that Radio Silence’s Matt Bettinelli-Olpin & Tyler Gillett are directing for Universal.
The actor joins an ensemble which also includes Melissa Barrera, Alisha Weir and Dan Stevens, as previously announced.
In the vein of Universal’s recent films like The Invisible Man and Renfield, the Radio Silence thriller will provide a unique take on legendary monster lore, representing a fresh, new direction for how to celebrate these classic characters. Universal monster films are rooted in the horror genre, with no restrictions on budget, rating or genre — and they are not part of a shared interconnected universe, which allows each to stand on its own. This new direction is filmmaker-driven, inviting innovative filmmakers with original, bold ideas for these characters to develop the stories and pitch them.

Wow, a ‘new’ Sam Peckinpah western! While we await the rumored Blu-ray of Pat Garrett and Billy the Kid to surface (or was Alex Cox misinformed?), correspondent Darren Gross has come across a watchable web encoding of a Peckinpah TV drama that seems to be more or less ‘lost.’ Good star performances and intense characterizations prove once again that Peckinpah could deliver superior dramatics. The home video companies should do some investigating — there’s a market out there for this one.

Kevin Costner’s western epic is about to start production and Luke Wilson is the latest actor to saddle up. Deadline has reported that Wilson has joined the cast of Horizon alongside Kevin Costner, Sam Worthington, Sienna Miller, and Jamie Campbell Bower.
Related Best Man: Dolph Lundgren, Luke Wilson, and Scout Taylor-Compton to star in new action film
Kevin Costner’s Horizon will chronicle a “multi-faceted, 15-year span of pre- and post-Civil War expansion and settlement of the American West. Experienced through the eyes of many, the epic journey is fraught with peril and intrigue from the constant onslaught of natural elements to the interactions with the Indigenous peoples who lived on the land and the determination and at many times ruthlessness of those who sought to settle it.” In addition to directing Horizon, Kevin Costner also co-wrote the script with Jon Baird, and will be producing, financing, and starring in the project as well.

Updated with statement from Hannah Gutierrez-Reed) Santa Fe police may be a step closer to discovering where the live round fired last month by Alec Baldwin that killed Rust cinematographer Halyna Hutchins came from.
In a fourth search warrant approved by a New Mexico judge, detectives on Tuesday revealed that armorer Hannah Gutierrez-Reed’s father Thell Reed reached out to them November 15 to tell them about possibly hundreds of rounds of live ammunition that Rust “armorer mentor” Seth Kenney took from him earlier this year. Kenney told the elder Reed to “write it off” when the veteran armorer and stuntman repeatedly inquired about the rounds.
In two conversations with the Sheriff’s Office, the elder Reed revealed that he brought the “approximately 200-300 rounds in the can …described the can to be green in color and looked like a military ammo can” to a “firearms range” to help train actors on another production with Kenney.

Some 12 years after 66-year-old (at the time) Harrison Ford last wore the fedora in Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, a fifth installment in the saga of everyone’s favorite adventurer and archaeology professor is still in the works.
A new script is being penned by James Mangold (Logan), who has also been tapped to succeed Steven Spielberg in the director’s chair for Indiana Jones 5, Den of Geek had a chance to speak with producer Frank Marshall about the current state of development on the movie, starting with the screenplay, Ford’s status (he’s now edging toward 79), and what Mangold potentially brings to the franchise.
“Yeah, we are working on the script,” says Marshall. “There will only be one Indiana Jones and that’s Harrison Ford. What I’m excited about with Jim is a great story. I think you see that in his movies like Ford Vs Ferrari.

The Telluride Film Festival has a tradition of opening up with an anticipated world premiere, and the patron screening of James Mangold’s “Ford v Ferrari” did not disappoint. Back in 2005, Mangold screened his Johnny Cash biopic “Walk the Line” here in Colorado, and the film won Reese Witherspoon a Best Actress Academy Award.
“Ford v Ferrari,” which releases November 15, 2019, from Fox/Disney, should yield a slew of awards nominations, including for director James Mangold and co-stars Matt Damon and three-time nominee Christian Bale (who won Supporting Actor for “The Fighter”). How they break down this even two-hander is another Oscar season quandary.
Despite a hefty 152-minute running time (a trend this fall), the bone-rattlingly intense “Ford v Ferrari” is a tight, taut, percussive, and emotional commercial entertainment that puts audiences inside the real-life drama behind race car driver-turned-designer Carroll Shelby (Matt Damon) and gifted, tightly wound driver Ken Miles...

Christian Bale and Matt Damon are bringing a dose of high octane star power to the upcoming racing biopic “Ford v Ferrari.” The sports drama about the Ford Motor Company’s attempt to beat Enzo Ferrari’s racing empire in 1966 is the latest directorial effort from James Mangold, who has been behind the camera for both Oscar-contending dramas (“Walk the Line”) and acclaimed blockbusters (“Logan”). The film reunites Mangold with leading actor Bale following their “3:10 to Yuma” remake.

The Silver Bear will see Michael B. Jordan star as an elite assassin in what could become a film franchise.
Michael B. Jordan might just be on the verge of giving Dwayne Johnson a run for his money as Hollywood’s most ubiquitous action film star. The actor has nabbed a starring role in another prospective action franchise, having just been cast in a Lionsgate film adaptation of the popular novel series, The Silver Bear.
Jordan's casting in The Silver Bear, as reported by Deadline, will see Jordan star as a shadowy assassin who calls himself Columbus but is known as a bit of a boogeyman in the Russian criminal underworld as the assassin, the Silver Bear. The film is based on the initial entry in the novel series of author Derek Haas, who also wrote the screenplays for films like Wanted, 3:10 to Yuma (2007), 2 Fast 2 Furious and Invincible.

Clint Walker, who starred in the television Western “Cheyenne” and had a key supporting role in the WWII film “The Dirty Dozen,” died on Monday in Northern California, according to the New York Times. He was 90.
For seven seasons from 1955-61, he played Cheyenne Bodie, a rambunctious wanderer in the post-Civil War West, on the ABC series “Cheyenne.” (He also guested as the character on “Maverick.”)
The actor’s seriocomic confrontation with star Lee Marvin was one of the highlights of the classic 1967 war picture “The Dirty Dozen.”
After “Cheyenne” ended, Walker made some guest appearances on TV — “77 Sunset Strip,” “Kraft Suspense Theatre” and “The Lucy Show,” in an episode called “Lucy and Clint Walker.”
But the actor became more interested in movies both theatrical and for TV. In 1964, he had a supporting role in the Doris Day-Rock Hudson comedy “Send Me No Flowers.” His acting was not distinguished,...

Sunday Pm update: At a time when streaming is encroaching on certain cinema genres and sending them to mobile screens, Entertainment Studios is looking to keep moviegoing alive on the big screen.
This weekend the $4M TIFF acquisition that Entertainment Studios’ chief Byron Allen made for Scott Cooper’s western Hostiles paid off with a $10M-$11M wide opening, easily besting tracking’s low single-digit projections.
Even more impressive, Hostiles beat the weekend results of all the big studio Oscar-nominated titles, many of which also went wide, i.e. The Shape of Water and Phantom Thread.
“It’s nice when your competitors call you and say ‘Wow, we were wrong, you were right,'” beamed Allen who literally made his minimum guarantee on Hostiles back this weekend in its film rental.
“Although we are an independent, we are throwing punches like a major studio,” said Allen about his commitment to...
