When my partner asked me what movie I was watching perhaps “checking out Hundreds of Beavers” wasn’t the best of all possible answers. And I suppose trying to clarify it with “big hairy Canadian beavers” didn’t help. But despite the title and opening quote from St. Augustine, “Lord grant me chastity, but not yet!”, this isn’t that kind of a movie.
The new film from director Mike Cheslik and co-writer Ryland Brickson Cole Tews, the pair who gave us the Tews-directed Lake Michigan Monster, never really gets raunchier than an old episode of The Benny Hill Show as it relates the tale of Jean Kayak (Ryland Brickson Cole Tews) who, as we see in the opening animation, has lost his apple orchard...

What kind of music goes best with comedy? Even if you’ve never seen The Benny Hill Show, you know its silly, sped-up theme song. For years, funny movies would incorporate swinging jazz or playful orchestral tunes. Then, in the late 1970s, John Landis had the idea to tap acclaimed Oscar-winning composer (and friend) Elmer Bernstein to write a no-winking serious score for Landis’ outrageous Animal House. The juxtaposition worked perfectly, the onscreen hijinks accentuated by Bernstein’s soaring strings — almost as if the movie was pretending to be classy while the characters were thumbing their nose at the pomposity. Soon, other movies, like Airplane! (also scored by Bernstein), were doing the same thing, proving that what initially seemed like a bizarre notion for music in a comedy could actually be brilliant.
But times change, and one trend gets replaced by a new one. By the mid-1980s, several hit comedies contained a hit single.

Jeannette Charles, the Queen Elizabeth II look-alike who played the British monarch for laughs in National Lampoon’s European Vacation, in the first Naked Gun movie and in the last Austin Powers film, has died. She was 96.
Charles died Sunday at a hospice facility in Great Baddow, Essex, England, her daughter, Carol Christophi, announced. “Mum was a real character and a force of nature. She had an amazing life,” she said. “She was always respectful of the queen and adored the royal family.”
Queen Elizabeth II died in September 2022, also at age 96.
Charles spent more than four decades doubling for the head of state before she wound down her career in 2014.
“I think the first time I was recognized [as the queen] was on a trip [in 1971] to Capri in Italy, with my Italian pen friend Florence,” she recalled in a 2012 interview. “Someone shouted ‘Princess Elizabeth’ in Italian, my friend explained her majesty had...

Grave robbing is a lot like "The Star Wars Holiday Special," in that it's kinda neat to watch when Harrison Ford is doing it, but for the most part, nobody approves.
The bizarre act of digging up a human corpse and stealing it for unnatural purposes is the sort of thing we've grown accustomed to in movies. The image of Dr. Frankenstein kicking up the soil in search of really big corpses is pretty much burned into our brains. Grave robbing is the sort of thing villains do if the bodies are fresh, and heroes do if the bodies are really, really old — or if the body is fresh and belongs to Superman, that's probably the biggest ethical loophole.
But in real life, celebrities aren't usually known for digging up corpses for personal gain. That's the sort of thing that happens to celebrities more often than the other way around.

UK-based fans of Last Week Tonight with John Oliver were spared a 25-minute clip of former Prime Minister Winston Churchill going backwards down a waterslide, set to the theme of The Benny Hill Show.
The HBO host had dared British broadcaster Sky to cut his segment on the British monarchy, saying that he would replace it with the repetitive comedy clip if the Comcast-owned company did so.
Sky decided against the cut and viewers got to see the segment.
“To a degree that Americans may not realize the monarchy isn’t a universally beloved institution,” the Brit said last night before pointing to some Scottish and Irish football fans chanting “Lizzie’s in a box” at games.
“You can make the case that that is in bad taste. You can also make the case that it’s very funny. Two things can be true,” he said.

Boris Johnson and his populist approach to politics have long divided people and observers in Britain and beyond.
Some celebrities have regularly criticized his style and agenda, including Brexit and immigration policy.
So it was no surprise that stars chimed in with their reactions when the 58-year-old confirmed on Thursday that he was stepping down as leader of the Conservative Party, but was planning to remain Prime Minister until a successor is picked.
Hugh Grant, who famously portrayed a fictional British prime minister in Love Actually, asked well-known anti-Brexit activist Steve Bray via Twitter to send off Johnson with the famous theme tune of sketch comedy show The Benny Hill Show, which aired on the BBC and later ITV between 1955 until 1989. “Do you by any chance have the Benny Hill music to hand?” Grant put in his request.

At the behest of Hugh Grant, the zanny tunes of “The Benny Hill Show” theme are now providing the soundtrack to Britain’s three-ring-circus political crisis.
Prime Minister Boris Johnson has stated he will resign following the departures and firings of numerous government figures — over 50 people, including four Cabinet members in just two days — amid several political scandals, like “partygate.”
In a tweet to activist Steve Bray yesterday, Grant said, “Morning @snb19692 Glad you have your speakers back. Do you by any chance have the Benny Hill music to hand?”

An admiring nod to ’60s dream siren Daliah Lavi! American-International leaps into an epic Jules Verne comedy about a trip to the moon, a good-looking but slow and unfunny farce that must squeak by on the goodwill of its cast of comedians. Burl Ives is excellent casting as P.T. Barnum, promoting a Greatest Show Off the Earth.

Director: Jake Kasdan; Screenwriters: Kate Angelo, Jason Segel, Nicholas Stoller; Starring: Cameron Diaz, Jason Segel, Rob Corddry, Ellie Kemper, Rob Lowe; Running time: 94 mins; Certificate: 15
Cameron Diaz and Jason Segel get themselves into a rather tricky position in Sex Tape, in more ways than one. The two bounced off each other pretty well in Bad Teacher and apparently, that was enough to convince director Jake Kasdan to throw them together again and cut loose with some cheeky nudity and a naughty premise and the end result is a flabby, largely unfunny comedy. Awkward...
Right away, the couple are seen getting up close and very personal, but those were the good old days fondly recalled by Annie (Diaz) who now writes a parenting blog between chores, sleep and sexual frustration. Her now-husband Jay (Segel) has resorted to booking appointments for possible nookie and when they do find the time, it's all friction and no sparks.

Ok, you should probably just get ready to call it a day. Go ahead and pull your car keys out of your pocket and move your cursor toward the 'shut down' prompt on your computer screen, because this video is going to be the high point of today, if not your life: After you've watched Dolly Parton play "Yakety Sax" on a tiny rhinestone-encrusted saxophone, there's literally nothing left for you to accomplish. "I was feeling rather saxy today," the 68-year-old singer told the massive crowd at the Glastonbury Music Festival on Sunday. "I wanted to do something to impress you.

No doubt fans of 21 Jump Street recognized plenty of callbacks and self-deprecating cracks made by Jonah Hill and Channing Tatum in the über-meta sequel 22 Jump Street. From a running gag about how sequels are more expensive versions of the exact same thing (including undercover partners Schmidt and Jenko’s high-tech new HQ, which Jenko describes as cool “as a Cube of Ice”) to the line “F— you, doves!” (surely a throwback to the first installment’s fan-favorite line “F— you, science!”), the movie was chockablock with them.

For many people of a certain age, The Benny Hill Show was our first introduction to slapstick … and boobs. And slapstick boobs. The Thames show ran for over 30 years in England, and in The States, could usually be seen late Friday or Saturday nights.
The comedy was of a “different era,” meaning it was sexist and objectified women, but oddly, it was inoffensive and in a way, there was an innocence about it. The most popular part of every Benny Hill Show was the final segment, in which he would be chased by various characters, usually buxom and/or angry women, to the tune of Boots Randolph‘s “Yakety Sax.”
Benny died in 1992, but today would have been his 90th birthday, so I decided to pay tribute by picking four famous movie scenes and giving them the Benny Hill treatment. Take a look and tell me these scenes aren’t...

My mother Pat Ashton, who has died aged 82, was an actor for over four decades. Probably her most important TV role was that of Annie, wife of a burglar (Bob Hoskins) who comes out of prison to find that his old friend (John Thaw) has moved in, in Thick As Thieves (1974). When Yorkshire TV declined a second series, the writers Dick Clement and Ian La Frenais took the idea to the BBC, where it was developed into the much-loved series Porridge.
Pat was born and raised in Wood Green, north London. During her early years, the piano was the focus of entertainment at home, with her brother Richard playing all the popular songs of the day. Her grandmother had been a trapeze artist, performing in front of the tsar in Russia, and Pat quickly became fascinated with music hall, learned to tap-dance from an early age and went on to...

Alan Moore harboured a special resentment towards the film version, which did serious injustices to his graphic novel
The film of V for Vendetta carries the following credit line: "Based on the graphic novel illustrated by David Lloyd." Alan Moore's name is nowhere to be seen. There's nothing unusual in that. Moore has disassociated himself from all Hollywood product, explaining: "League of Extraordinary Gentlemen was the reason why I decided to take my name off all subsequent films."
Few who have seen League of Extraordinary Gentlemen would want to argue with that. But even though his refusal to have his name on the credits is part of a general policy, Moore seems to harbour a special resentment towards the Joel Silver and Wachowski brothers production of V for Vendetta. As the New York Times wrote at the time of its release:

The critics can advise you on what's good and what's bad in all aspects of life – whether it's TV, music, films or food – but at the end of the day, it's the public view that counts. A TV critic can pick apart a really bad programme until the cows come home, but if the public likes it, who cares? How else could you explain the long-running My Family – Aka, the most depressing, mean-spirited excuse for a comedy in the history of telly – a programme that seems to be derided by every critic under the sun, and yet seems to have lasted for decades. See? If the public likes something, then a critic's job sometimes feels a bit pointless.
Still, as I weep into my computer keyboard, at least I can console myself with the fact that My Family's limping to its well deserved end this year. As for Doctor Who,...

Here in the UK, we typically appropriate- or have thrust upon us- ghastly American fads. From Big Macs to The Monkees, from hip-hop to the hydrogen bomb, if something is big and bad in the USA, it’s not usually along before it besets us across the Atlantic. However, the UK is far from being an entirely innocent party in this seemingly one way abusive relationship and, occasionally, the lowest forms of Western European culture have a pernicious influence on the artistic lives of the colonies. Among these indiscretions are The X Factor, The Benny Hill Show and, latterly, Russell Brand.
In a similair spirit, a certain amount of blame must be taken for the nostalgia stage musical, and the most notable Us equivalent of its- primarily- English phenomenon, Rock of Ages.
Whereas in the UK we laboured under the malevolent machinations of Ben Elton and the Abba musical, Mamma Mia,...

He was once voted the funniest man on television. He was later vilified as a sexist pig who objectified and demeaned women. Benny Hill has always been a magnet for controversy. Was he a comedy pioneer who ushered in a new level of racy rowdiness to television or was he a misogynistic pervert who set back the cause of female empowerment by decades? Whichever side of the fence you’re on in the debate, no one can deny that Benny Hill made his mark on popular culture. Benny Hill: the Complete Mega-Set delivers 20 years worth of Hill’s unforgettable antics.
Even decades later, who can hear the catchy saxophone tune “Yakety Sax” without thinking of Benny Hill? The highlight of his 50 year show business career was the sketch comedy series, The Benny Hill Show, which ran from 1969-1989. Sometimes, to appreciate what you are watching, you must first appreciate those featured within. Benny Hill, along with his rather obscure but phenomenally talented cast, transformed British television comedy at a time when many else had tried and failed.
The Benny Hill Show was one of the most successful programmes ever shown on British television, transforming Hill into a global household name as a result.
The Benny Hills Annuals 1982 and 1983 feature two fifty minute episodes of the most non-pc, risqué comedy you will ever have seen. Armed with his entourage of bikini-clad women, and his trio of hopeless helpers (Henry McGee, Bob Todd and Jackie Lee Wright), Benny seamlessly works his way through a large variety of different styles of comedy, an ability that very few have been able to replicate.
As you become engrossed within each episode it becomes very clear to see why the show was just so successful: Benny himself.

The Royal Mail in the U.K. have decided against producing a series of stamps based on The Benny Hill Show which will commemorate the 50th anniversary of the British channel ITV. The subject matter of the show was deemed to be too politically incorrect for the purposes of putting on a stamp.
Anybody who watches the show nowadays would acknowledge that the show contained sketches that were blatantly sexist. Somehow I doubt ITV or the Royal Mail or anyone would put any of the racier scenes of the show on the stamp. It would just be Benny himself mugging for the camera, so to speak.
For the Royal Mail, it likely boils down to this: when you have a program noted for women whose clothes fly off at any given moment and they're left running around in their underwear and that show is put on a stamp, the last...

Roly-poly funnywoman Bella Emberg regularly left millions of TV viewers in tears of laughter during the 1980s and early '90s. The rotund comic found fame acting as one of Russ Abbot's stooges in his Madhouse comedy series, where she often stole the show with her performances as Blunderwoman. Aside from her work with Abbot, Emberg worked on The Benny Hill Show, Z Cars and has even made three cameo appearances (more)...
