It’s been 31 years since Karen Carpenter‘s death from anorexia-related cardiac arrest back on February 3, 1983. What can I tell you? She is a staggering vocalist whose mastery is still difficult to articulate. Her appeal was palatable, square and all-American, but her work is haunted and bluntly emotional. The way Dusty Springfield‘s crystal-clear voice veiled sensuality, Karen’s warm, sweetly resonant instrument revealed loneliness and dark contemplation. There isn’t and won’t ever be a singer like her, and for that reason her music feels astonishingly timeless, even in its most maudlin balladry.
After seeing the Carpenters perform on Your All-American College Show, John Wayne wanted her to star in True Grit.
She once won Playboy’s poll of Best Drummers, beating out an infuriated John Bonham at #2.
Bonham is seriously reported as saying, “I’d like to have it publicized that I came in after Karen Carpenter in the Playboy drummer poll!
