Mowgli uses that as a term of endearment. He views Baloo as a father figure. Baloo returns the favor by referring to Mowgli as "Little Britches."
Mowgli is estimated to be 10 years old.
Originally, storyman Bill Peet (who wrote One Hundred and One Dalmatians and The Sword in the Stone) decided to follow closely the dramatic, dark, and sinister tone of Kipling's book. However, Walt Disney resented Peet's treatment feeling it was too dark for family audiences, and urged for a lighter tone for the movie. After Peet's departure from the project, all references to Kipling's book in his treatment were subsequently dropped except for his characterizations, and replaced with comedic gags and emotional sequences.
