Exclusive: Bartlett Sher, nine-time Tony Award directing nominee and winner for 2008’s South Pacific, will direct the recently announced Dolly Parton musical Hello, I’m Dolly, set for Broadway in 2026.
“How lucky I am to have the great Bartlett Sher direct my Hello, I’m Dolly musical,” Parton said in a statement. “When you decide to put your whole life up on stage, you hope and pray to find the right director with the right creativity and sensitivity to present all the blood, sweat, tears, light, love, and laughter that I’ve experienced over seven decades of living. My heart tells me that Bartlett is the man and the director for the job.”
Said Sher, “Dolly is one of the great songwriters in the American canon, and being entrusted with the opportunity to help her translate that glorious talent into the American musical theater is not only an honor, but absolutely a thrill.

The Lumière Festival’s International Classic Film Market (Mifc) in Lyon, France, is highlighting heritage documentaries, examining Cuban and Swedish cinema and showcasing the work of the Wim Wenders Foundation as part of a newly revamped program.
In overhauling the Mifc, organizers are seeking to position the event closer to industry needs, offer improved services and offer a clearer picture of the ever evolving heritage content market.
The change will “modify the market to be less institutional and more business oriented,” says Gérald Duchaussoy, who oversees programming and coordination for the Mifc.
The market, which runs Oct. 17-20, kicks off with a keynote by Claire Brunel and Hella Wenders, the managing director of the Wim Wenders Foundation.
The Düsseldorf-based organization, created for the purpose of preserving, maintaining and disseminating Wenders’ works, is very unique and its presentation will be a very interesting opportunity for Mifc participants to learn how it...

The story of the horrific Idaho student murders is in the works for the page and the small screen. Bestselling author James Patterson and award-winning journalist Vicky Ward are teaming on a nonfiction book about the 2022 murders of the four University of Idaho students. Additionally, Skydance Television intends to option the rights to the book for development as a docuseries, based on Patterson and Ward’s investigation, as part of their first-look deal with Patterson.
The book, which does not yet have a title or release date, will be published by Little Brown and Company. According to the publishing company, in it, Patterson and Ward will give a dramatic account of the November 2022 murders of the four students in the Idaho college town of Moscow and the investigation of suspect Bryan Kohberger.
Patterson and Ward will draw from dozens of exclusive interviews, extensive on-the-ground reporting, copious court transcripts, and also will attend Kohberger’s trial.

Foreseeing a relaxation of censorship on the horizon, England’s Titan Films filmed this mad surgery opus with far more gore and cruelty than was the norm in 1967-68, and their gambit paid off. Horror favorite Peter Cushing stars with Sue Lloyd, a pair nobody expected to show up in a shocker with such a high sleaze quotient. Pi’s special edition gives us three versions of the show including the continental cut with Cushing’s most lurid scene ever, and heaps of comment and analysis.

The Hong Kong International Film Festival has announced the cancelation of its world premiere screening of crime thriller “Where the Wind Blows.” The move appears to be part of the accelerating ‘mainlandization’ of Hong Kong’s entertainment industry.
The festival said Monday evening in a statement that screenings of “Where the Wind Blows” (previously known “Theory of Ambitions”) had been cancelled at the request of the film’s owner.
“Upon request from the film owner, the screenings of ‘Where the Winds Blows’ originally scheduled at 5.30 p.m. on 1 April and 2.30 p.m. on 4 April are cancelled due to technical reasons,” the festival said in a statement in English and Chinese.
The film was produced by Hong Kong’s Mei Ah Film Production in a co-venture with mainland Chinese firms Dadi Century and Global Group. Its production budget has been reported as $38 million.

Romania’s official Oscar entry for international feature, “Collective,” marks the first time the country has submitted a documentary to the Oscars.
Alexander Nanau’s story follows the 2015 fire at the Colectiv nightclub which killed 64 people and injured hundreds. Released on-demand Nov. 20 and in select theaters, Nanau’s trail takes him from the deadly fire to a healthcare crisis to the heart of political corruption within the Romanian government.
Nanau talked to Variety about how he pieced the documentary together and gathered interviews with whistleblowers as journalists uncover a scandal that rocked a country.
How soon after the Colectiv nightclub fire in 2015 did you have the idea for the film?
Oh, I didn’t. I was interested in understanding what’s going on because demonstrations had erupted, and there was a message by the younger generation of “Corruption Kills” that wanted to force the political class to reform. There was...

Based on what we’re hearing from Disney, the seventh and final season of Star Wars: The Clone Wars, now on Disney Plus, will be with us on February 17th, 2020. One of the more challenging aspects of the animated series, though, is that you won’t get a chronological experience by just following the released episode order. Thankfully, then, we now have a correct viewing order courtesy of the official Star Wars site, which tells us all you need to know to catch up on The Clone Wars before its return.
The Clone Wars bridges the gap between Attack of the Clones and Revenge of the Sith, providing a significant level of detail for anyone wondering what was going on in between the two prequel movies. When aired, episodes could often be bundled together as arcs, linked by one-off episodes that might explore a different part of the galaxy adjacent...

It’s the Swinging Sixties baby, and Peter Cushing is right in the thick of it! Or rather I should say he’s up to his tweed in blood and severed heads in Corruption (1968), a strange and nasty little number that proves the Baron did know how to get his hands dirty.
Released in December by Columbia Pictures, Corruption curried no favor from critics at the time, with most labeling it as silly nonsense with a poor script. But time has been kind to the film (and softened its edges), as it’s a good showcase for Cushing and a solid snapshot of London’s loosening mores. And with a tagline that screams, “Corruption Is Not A Woman’S Picture!”, how can you refuse?

Those groovy exploitation dealers at Grindhouse Releasing are finally releasing Duke Mitchell’s Gone With The Pope. I have been waiting to see this film for some time and missed the only theatrical showing in St. Louis because it was shown at a different theater on the same nights I did a Late Nite Grindhouse show 5 years ago. This is awesome news for fans coupled with the release of Duke Mitchell’s later film, Massacre Mafia Style, hitting Blu-Ray later this month.
Trailer From Grindhouse Releasing’s website:
Lost for over 30 years, Gone With The Pope stars famed nightclub performer Duke Mitchell as Paul, a paroled gangster with an unholy scheme: to kidnap the Pope and charge “a dollar from every Catholic in the world” as the ransom.
Shot in 1975, Gone With The Pope was unfinished at the time of Duke Mitchell’s death in 1981. Sage Stallone and Bob Murawski...

Last year saw the unfortunate passing of one of Grindhouse Releasing’s original founders: Sage Stallone. It was a huge loss for fans of exploitation and cult cinema as Sage was an advocate of uncovering lost films from the 70′s and 80′s and restoring them for new audiences to discover. Sage worked alongside Bob Murawski, a frequent collaborator with Sam Raimi and co-founder of Grindhouse Releasing. Thanks to their hard work and dedication genre fans were treated to releases of Cannibal Holocaust, Lucio Fulci’s The Beyond, and the entertaining and gory slasher Pieces. These are just a few of the many titles the duo resurrected that Destroy the Brain’s monthly program Late Nite Grindhouse were able to show in 35mm over the years. After a two year hiatus which included Bob Murawski working on Raimi’s recent Oz film, Grindhouse Releasing will return with two new titles later...

Founded 17 years ago by Sage Stallone and Bob Murawski, Grindhouse Releasing is a beloved institution among horror and exploitation film fans, thanks to their lovingly restored releases of cult classics like Cannibal Holocaust, The Beyond, I Drink Your Blood, Pieces and many more. Grindhouse went on hiatus for a while, partially due to Stallone's death last year and Murawski's commitment to editing Oz the Great and Powerful for Sam Raimi. But the studio has finally resurfaced to announce a massive new slate of movie titles. "After two years in the yellow brick prison of Oz, I am back full-time at Grindhouse Releasing, proudly continuing the important work that Sage and I began back in 1996," Murawski said in the announcement, in which he revealed a list of titles awaiting DVD, Blu-ray and theatrical releases – beginning with the psychedelic obscurity An American Hippie in Israel, which has gained Rocky Horror-like status in...

David Miller's new book Peter Cushing: A Life in Film is now available from most major retailers. Peter Cushing was brought to fame through his roles as Baron Frankenstein and Doctor Van Helsing in the acclaimed horror movies from Hammer Films Productions.
We recently chatted with the author of the new book to discuss Cushing's memorable presence in cult cinema.
Amanda Dyar: Your new book Peter Cushing: A Life in Film details the career of Peter Cushing. Can you tell us what motivated you to write this particular book?
David Miller: Growing up, Peter Cushing was one of those reassuring faces you’d see on television every so often. I wasn’t old enough to see the Hammer films in the cinema, so there was always something deliciously out-of-reach about them. Then when I started seeing the original Hammers on TV, I became aware of the sheer quality of them,...

Drive-In Super Monster-Rama is one of my favorite horror events of the year. Since first attending in 2008, I’ve looked forward to the interesting mix of classic and obscure horror films on the big screen, and this year’s Super Monster-Rama starts on Friday night.
The event is the brainchild of DVD Drive-In’s George Reis, who talked about his reasons for starting the drive-in marathon. He also told me what we can expect from this weekend’s line-up of trailers and classic films.
First off, I wanted to congratulate you on winning the “DVD Reviewer of the Year” Rondo Award. For our readers who are unfamiliar with DVD Drive-In, can you tell our readers how it all started?
George Reis: I started DVD Drive-In in 2000 because I wanted to write about cult horror movies that were being released on DVD. At that time, it seemed like a lot...

The Samurai Trilogy (Criterion) Director Hiroshi Inagaki’s sprawling epic filmed from 1954-56 is an early Japanese Technicolor masterpiece, rivaling the scope of filmmakers like David Lean and Luchino Visconti. Toshiro Mifune, Japan’s greatest actor, stars as real-life swordsman, artist and writer Musashi Miyamoto, following his growth from callow youth to disciplined warrior. The three films: the Oscar winning “Musashi Miyamoto,” “Duel at Ichijoji Temple,” and “Duel at Ganryu Island” are an incredible story of human growth, tender love and sublime, blood-soaked action. Not to be missed. Also available on Blu-ray disc. Bonuses: Interviews with translator and historian William Scott Wilson; Trailers. Full screen. Dolby 1.0 mono.
The 39 Steps (Criterion) Alfred Hitchcock’s 1935 story of spies, conspiracies and sexual tension put him on the map on both sides of the Pond. Robert Donat stars as an innocent thrust into a deadly plot alongside a cool blonde (Madeleine Carroll...

"Dream death-match to be sure, but I just noticed Koji Wakamatsu is actually making a new film based on Mishima's life," wrote Sanjuro six months ago, sparking a discussion in the Forum. 11.25 Jiketsu no Hi: Mishima Yukio to Wakamonotachi, with Arata taking the lead and Terajima Shinobu (Caterpillar) playing Mishima's wife, "focuses on the events of November 25, 1970, when Mishima entered the Tokyo headquarters of the Japan Self-Defense Forces along with four members of his private militia, the Tatenokai," wrote Nicholas Vroman in May at Toronto J-Film Pow-Wow. "Seizing control of the commandant's office, Mishima delivered a rambling speech from the balcony hoping to inspire a coup d'etat. He then returned to the office and committed suicide." He also notes that Wakamatsu's been blogging throughout the production. And today, Wildgrounds has posted the first trailer (above).

Actor known for her roles in The Ipcress File and Crossroads
The actor Sue Lloyd, who has died aged 72, exuded glamour and sophistication on screen in the 1960s, before finding renewed fame two decades later as Barbara Hunter in 714 episodes of the TV soap opera Crossroads. But it took two attempts by the serial's producers to persuade her to join a programme that was roundly abused by the critics.
"My initial reaction was to be a bit sniffy about it," Lloyd recalled in her 1998 autobiography, It Seemed Like a Good Idea at the Time. "The soap was renowned for its wobbly scenery, bizarre storylines and regular slaughtering by the critics. Why would I, just back from filming [Revenge of] The Pink Panther with Peter Sellers in the south of France and about to embark on the comedy The Upchat Line with John Alderton, want to get involved in a project like that?...

(The following posts relate to the British crime thriller Corruption, which was recently aired by Turner Classic Movies)
We've just received the following from one of favorite directors, Joe Dante, who runs the highly entertaining web site Trailers From Hell:
Here's Edgar Wright's amusing take on the trailer on Tfh. http://trailersfromhell.com/trailers/292
Retro Responds: Thanks for the head's up, Joe...your site continues to provide more entertainment through your presentation of cult trailers than most contemporary feature films do!- Lee Pfeiffer
It is a shame that the UK branch of TCM doesn't often show films as interesting or varied as Robert Hartford Davis' Corruption (actual copyright is 1967). It will be interesting to see whether you goes over the pond get the UK edit, or the much more gory/sexy European cut. The latter has an extraodinary (no to say offensive) scene where Cushing attacks a topless woman with a knife,...

In the tradition of The Corpse Vanishes and Eyes Without a Face, this sleazoid classic casts Peter Cushing as a mad Swinging Sixties London surgeon who dismembers screaming women for their pituitary glands to restore the beauty of his disfigured fiancee. Despite the sordid surroundings Cushing gives his usual all-out performance. A longer, even scuzzier Continental version exists under the title The Laser Killer.
