Vicki London was originally cast in the lead female role, but it was given to Joy Harmon after London refused to show her boobs to the director. She said in an interview "During the wardrobe fittings, Bert Gordon wanted us [Joy Harmon, Tisha Sterling, Gail Gilmore] to take off our shirts and show him our breasts because he wanted the girl with the biggest ones to play the lead and be featured in the movie poster. I refused and Tisha did too. They still gave Tisha a very nice part but it was down hill after this for me. They made an issue out of me not willing to show my breasts, so they threatened that if I didn't do it they were going to cut me out of everything and they did." Gail Gilmore remembered this incident and said, "They wanted us to show us popping out of our clothes and asked if we minded being nude for it during filming though we would cover our breasts with our arms. I never had any qualms with nudity so I readily said yes. Joy did too, but Vicki refused." Joy Harmon said that while she would never agree to being nude onscreen in a movie, she had no problem being nude on set for any role that called for it as long as the camera didn't see anything. She wasn't shy so it didn't bother her if actors or production crew saw her body. So when Gordon asked to see her breasts, it made sense why he was doing it and she wanted the bigger role, so she took off her top and let him look at her topless.
The brand of chicken that the giant teenagers eat is a tie-in to the once-famous restaurant chain called Chicken Delight. The chain was known for home delivery of chicken and ribs, as well as its catchy motto: "Don't cook tonight, call Chicken Delight." A banner for the restaurant chain can be seen on a wall behind the adults who turn in their rifles. But the cast didn't get to eat the actual chicken. According to Joy Harmon, "The prop guys gave us some really small bird that they fried to make it look like a tiny chicken. It came from a famous chicken place and it was horrible. I hated eating whatever it was and had to keep eating it over and over. "
Toni Basil (80's hit "Mickey") plays "Red," the girl dancing for the giant teen boys while they were eating. She is also the dance choreographer of the movie.
The cat appearing in this film was named Orangey (later renamed Minerva), and Village of the Giants was the second time he played the role of a cat larger than a human, the first being Scott Carey's (actor Grant Williams) pet in The Incredible Shrinking Man (1957). His most famous roles were as "Rhubarb" in the film Rhubarb (1951) and the cat in Breakfast at Tiffany's (1961).
Some scenes on the original shooting script were omitted from the final film, likely due to being too expensive. These include: scenes leading up to the car crash that opens the film, with the teens riding on two cars rather than one; growth scenes for all the giants (in the film, only Elsa, Fred and Merrie are seen growing); Georgette (Vicki London) dancing with Horsesy rather than Merrie (Joy Harmon); the giants toppling telephone poles and smashing the sheriff's car, to cut off communication from the outside world; Mike trying to escape and find help, only to be stopped by Fred; and the giants partying all night and day, wreaking havoc all over town.
