How do you untangle a feud that's lasted half a century, spanning the distance of an entire sci-fi franchise and several fictional galaxies? It's a challenge to be sure, but it's clear even to the naked eye that "Star Trek" stars George Takei and William Shatner have a whole lot of baggage. Their distaste for one another is no secret; they've been known to unpack it publicly during interviews, in books, and via social media posts, even decades after they last worked together. Now in their 80s and 90s respectively, the pair still grab headlines for the occasional verbal swipe at one another.
So, what went wrong between Shatner and Takei? It depends on which of the two you ask, but some of the earliest and most complete explanations of their time on "Star Trek" come from Takei's 1994 autobiography "To The Stars." In it, the Hikaru Sulu actor surprisingly notes...

1964's "The Pink Panther" is not a complex film. There is little to suggest a full-fledged film series in its story of a jewel with the shape of a panther buried deep within. Somehow, that premise resulted in a series of films lasting decades, with eleven unique (or mostly unique) live-action entries. And the cartoon character who showed up in the title sequence, dancing to Henry Mancini's iconic theme music? There was a Saturday morning series starring him that ran in various incarnations from 1969 to 1980.
When writer Maurice Richlin pursued director Blake Edwards with an idea for a film about a jewel thief, neither man could have predicted the surprising longevity of that idea. Certainly, they couldn't have predicted that the extremely thin premise of "The Pink Panther" would result in a series of films running into the 1990s. Nor could they have predicted that the protagonist would be...

Born in 1920, Walter Matthau was a celebrated performer on both the stage and screen, known for his gruff, rumpled persona. Let’s take a look back at 15 of his greatest films, ranked worst to best.
Matthau turned to acting after serving in the United States Army Air Force during WWII. He became a frequent presence on the small screen with appearances in “Alfred Hitchcock Presents,” “Goodyear Playhouse,” and “The Du Pont Show of the Week” (which brought him an Emmy bid in 1963), to name a few. During this period he also appeared in several films, few of them comedies, including “A Face in the Crowd” (1957) and “Fail Safe” (1964).
At the same time, he gained increasing respect as a stage actor with Tony Award-winning performances in “A Shot in the Dark” (Featured Actor in a Play in 1962) and “The Odd Couple” (Actor in a Play in 1965). It was in the latter role of Oscar Madison,...

Yeah, we're thinking he's back, with a brand new box set! Lionsgate has announced that Keanu Reeves' legendary assassin is getting the treatment he deserves as a collection containing all four movies in the "John Wick" series is coming this fall. "John Wick: Chapters 1-4" is due to hit shelves in October, bringing all four movies together in one impressive-looking set with Blu-ray, DVD, and Digital copies of the films to add to your collection.
The set, which you can see a picture of below, is set to retail for $44.99. It comes with different pieces of interchangeable cover art and is well-stocked with special features. The only downside is that, for some reason, Lionsgate is not offering a 4K Ultra HD version of the set. So those who are set on owning all four of the "John Wick" movies in 4K need to look elsewhere. As befitting its status as one of the world’s biggest companies, every now and then Amazon likes to take a big swing with its Prime Video originals. With its list of new releases for April 2023, the streamer is taking one of its biggest swings yet.

TV had the run of the place for awhile there during the pandemic. But now that vaccinations are speeding up and the weather is warming, it’s film’s time to shine. At least that’s the conclusion that can be drawn from HBO Max’s list of new releases for June 2021.
There are no real original TV series of note coming this month, which is highly unusual for HBO and HBO Max. In their place, however, are some really impressive film offerings. Major Warner Bros. titles like The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It (June 4) and Lin-Manuel Miranda’s In the Heights (June 11) both arrive this month. So too do some interesting documentaries like Revolutionary Rent on June 15 and Lfg on June 24. The former deals with the staging of the musical Rent in Cuba and the latter follows the U.S. women’s soccer team’s fight for equal pay.

Hammer Studios made their mark by viewing Universal’s classic horror films through a contemporary lens—which for the late 50’s and early 60’s meant more explicit sex and violence—albeit sex and violence served up with baroquely beautiful cinematography and Byzantine art direction—like Roger Corman they offered “brilliance on a budget”. If the artists at Hammer felt intimidated by Universal’s shadow it never showed—but there was noticeable excitement when their 1962 adaptation of The Phantom of the Opera was announced with a production floated by plenty of money, a full blown operatic score, and Cary Grant in the lead. When is a Hammer film not a Hammer film? When it’s made by Planet Film Distributors of course, purveyors of low budget fare who wanted in on that horror coin and so produced Devils of Darkness (1965), an entertaining homage to their bigger brethren. If you’re plum out of Hammer’s to watch, this will do quite nicely.
Released by Planet in its native U.K., Devils of Darkness found U.S. distribution from Twentieth Century Fox as the second half of a double bill with The Curse of the Fly, and made its rounds on the drive-in circuit. Critics liked the aesthetic much like they did Hammer’s, but mostly found the story flat and convoluted. But buried within its (I think) interesting mixology of sub-genres is the story of a vampire going through a midlife crisis that I wish was explored in more depth. Oh well; what...

Blake Edwards would’ve celebrated his 97th birthday on July 26, 2019. Though best known for his comedies, the Oscar-nominated director dipped his toes into a number of different genres throughout his career, including thrillers, musicals and westerns. In honor of his birthday, let’s take a look back at 15 of his greatest films, ranked worst to best.
Born in 1922, Edwards got his start as an actor before becoming a writer for movies and television. He rose to prominence after creating the TV show “Peter Gunn,” which starred Craig Stevens as a super-stylish detective. The series brought Edwards Emmy nominations for writing and directing in 1959.
He enjoyed his greatest big screen successes with the “Pink Panther” series, featuring Peter Sellers as bumbling French detective Inspector Jacques Clouseau. The films established Edwards as a master of physical comedy and sight gags, which his leading man was more than capable of delivering. The two...

Now that we’re over the shock of “Green Book” winning the Producers Guild Award on Jan. 19 and the aftershock of director Peter Farrelly not getting an Oscar nomination for directing it, what are its chances of scoring the big prize next month?
Looking back at the academy’s history with pure “feel-good” movies, which “Green Book” is, the answer is. . .not great.
That PGA win, following a Directors Guild nomination for Farrelly, made “Green Book” the race’s front-runner for all of two days, but now, with just five nominations to 10 each for “Roma” and “The Favourite” and eight each for “A Star is Born” and “Vice,” it’s a dark horse.
We’ll never know if the Farrelly snub is due to revelations that he’d had a habit of flashing his junk at crew and cast members years ago, but even in those pre-Me Too dark ages,...

Walter Matthau would’ve celebrated his 98th birthday on October 1, 2018. Born in 1920, the actor was a celebrated performer on both the stage and screen, known for his gruff, rumpled persona. In honor of his birthday, let’s take a look back at 15 of his greatest films, ranked worst to best.

Composers John Powell and Germaine Franco took top honors at Wednesday night’s Screen Music Awards of the American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers (Ascap) at the Beverly Hilton Hotel.
Powell, composer of the Oscar-nominated score for “How to Train Your Dragon” and the new “Solo: A Star Wars Story,” received the Henry Mancini Award for his “outstanding achievements and contributions to the world of film and television music.”
Franco, songwriter and arranger of last year’s “Coco” who was also recently named “one of 15 Latinas who are changing the world” by Univision, received the Shirley Walker Award, given to a composer “whose achievements have contributed to the diversity of film and television music.”
Both composers spent more time talking about the composers in whose honor the awards were named, rather than about themselves or their own music. Before the ceremony, Powell told Variety that he met Mancini when...

While us horror lovers revelled in the ripped bodices and cobwebbed corridors of another vampire plagued castle, Hammer was busy trying to clear the halls and make their way into the modern world. Take Nightmare (1964), an effective black and white thriller that shows you don’t need fangs to be fearsome.
Released in its native U.K. in April and stateside in June, Nightmare (Aka the amazing Here’s the Knife, Dear: Now Use It) still has a lot of wandering down darkened hallways, but instead of coming up against the undead, our heroine has to do battle with her own brittle mind. Or has the dead come back for her?
Pity poor Janet (Jennie Linden – Old Dracula). Our film opens with her hearing a distant voice calling her name. She leaves the comfort of her bed and follows the whispered voice which leads her to a shadowed room where...

Anyway, back to your regularly scheduled episode of The Furniture. Today is the 100th anniversary of the birth of Herbert Charles Angelo Kuchačevič ze Schluderpacheru, the character actor otherwise known as Herbert Lom. He fled Nazi-occupied Czechoslovakia in 1939 for Britain, where he would have a long career in both film and television. He appeared in three Best Production Design nominees: El Cid, Spartacus, and Gambit. I will be writing about none of them.
Instead, here’s some love for the design of the films for which he is remembered most widely. Lom played Police Commissioner Charles Dreyfus, the long-suffering boss of Inspector Clouseau,...

'The Pink Panther' with Peter Sellers: Blake Edwards' 1963 comedy hit and its many sequels revolve around one of the most iconic film characters of the 20th century: clueless, thick-accented Inspector Clouseau – in some quarters surely deemed politically incorrect, or 'insensitive,' despite the lack of brown face make-up à la Sellers' clueless Indian guest in Edwards' 'The Party.' 'The Pink Panther' movies [1] There were a total of eight big-screen Pink Panther movies co-written and directed by Blake Edwards, most of them starring Peter Sellers – even after his death in 1980. Edwards was also one of the producers of every (direct) Pink Panther sequel, from A Shot in the Dark to Curse of the Pink Panther. Despite its iconic lead character, the last three movies in the Pink Panther franchise were box office bombs. Two of these, The Trail of the Pink Panther and Curse of the Pink Panther, were co-written by Edwards' son,...

William Peter Blatty, the novelist and screenwriter whose book "The Exorcist" became a literary phenomenon and a movie sensation, died Thursday at age 89. Blatty's success prior to the publication of the book in 1971 was largely based on comedic novels and screenplays. His greatest claim to fame in his early career was as screenwriter of the Pink Panther comedy "A Shot in the Dark". Blatty was studying at Georgetown University when he heard about a 1949 incident in which the Catholic church issued a rare approval for the exorcism of a young boy who was allegedly possessed by a demon. The story so intrigued Blatty that many years later it formed the basis of "The Exorcist", though he changed the victim to a young girl. The book was an overnight success and director William Friedkin's 1973 film version became one of the highest grossing films of all time. Blatty...

Responsible for one of the most iconic horror novels (and films…and posters!) of all time, The Exorcist author William Peter Blatty has passed away at age 89. Blatty started as a scriptwriter with credits including the Blake Edwards comedy A Shot In The Dark and (uncredited) The Omega Man. He adapted his 1971 best-seller The Exorcist for the screen in 1973, which resulted in his Oscar win for ‘Best Adapted Screenplay’. In 1980, he directed an unusual film I saw at the theater then, but have never seen since. The Ninth Configuration, an odd allegory starring Stacey Keach and Neville Brand about a remote castle that served as an insane military asylum, deserves to be rediscovered. In 1996, he wrote and directed The Exorcist III, based on his novel Legion. Just last year, the director’s cut of the film, now titled The Exorcist III: Legion, was released on Blu-ray. Blatty had a type of blood cancer.

William Peter Blatty, author of “The Exorcist,” died last night at the age of 89, according to close friend and “Exorcist” director William Friedkin.
Blatty first rose to prominence with his 1971 novel “The Exorcist,” about the demonic possession of a 12-year-old girl and the two priests who attempt to exorcise the demon. He later adapted the book into the script for the 1973 film, directed by William Friedkin. “The Exorcist” was a huge critical and commercial success. It was nominated for ten Oscars, with Blatty winning an award for Best Adapted Screenplay.
Blatty began his writing career in earnest in the mid-1960s with a series of comic novels — “Which Way to Mecca, Jack?,” “John Goldfarb, Please Come Home,” “I, Billy Shakespeare,” etc. — but his first foray into film was his collaboration with director Blake Edwards. His first major screenplay...

Movie sequels are big business for Hollywood. Many fans are getting burnt-out on sequels, especially since so many of them are unnecessary. Still, let’s not forget that when they’re done right, sequels can be great. Here are a dozen of the greatest sequels ever made.
12. Star Trek 2: The Wrath Of Khan (1982): Still the best of all the Star Trek films, this excellent sequel corrected everything that went wrong with its disappointing predecessor, Star Trek: The Motion Picture. The action, the humor and the character interactions were all excellent. The comparisons to Moby Dick gave it a literary flavor, and Ricardo Montalban was fantastic as the villain, Khan Noonien Singh. The death of Spock was a surprise to long-time fans, even if it didn’t last. This film made the Trek film franchise fun and set the standard for the future films.

We recently saw the release of the trailer for 10 Cloverfield Lane, which started life as an independent film unrelated to Cloverfield but was rewritten as a sequel (of sorts). This got us thinking about other films that were conceived as original projects but were altered by studios to become sequels to existing franchises.
When 10 Cloverfield Lane started out, it was an independent film called The Cellar, about a young woman (Mary Elizabeth Winstead) who wakes up injured and locked in the bunker-like cellar of a man (John Goodman) she’s never met before. The strange man tells her that he found after an accident and brought her there to minister to her wounds but then a cataclysmic disaster ravaged the surface world and she has to stay there. She doesn’t believe him and spends the rest of the film trying to escape, while her memories of the night of her accident slowly return.

There’s been a fan theory going around for several years that James Bond 007 is just an alias used by many British Agents over the years. Cinelinx looks at the arguments for and against this theory.
Is there a connection between the Sean Connery James Bond and the current Daniel Craig incarnation? Could they, in fact, be two MI6 Agents who’ve used the same alias as Agent 007, Aka James Bond? Have there been seven different people to carry the Bond name over the years, all claiming to be the genuine article? Does British Intelligence recruit a new 007 to replace the previous one if he is captured/quits/gets killed? Maybe so. Let’s look at the concept to see if the theory holds up under scrutiny.
This idea has become popular in recent years but the genesis of it actually began way back in 1967. In the original film version of Casino Royale,...

And then there were five beautiful people competing for the title as America's Next Top Model. Or should we call it America's 'Last' Top Model since it's been announced that this cycle is the last of the franchise? Lacey, Mikey, Devin, Mame and Nyle are the last of the original 13. By the end of "The Girl Who Took A Shot In The Dark," one more angel will slowly fade from the group photo at the end of the episode.
The models learn a lot about personal branding as well as shooting in the cold and dark in this episode. Lacey hasn't fully recovered from being in the bottom two last week, but now that Hadassah, her detractor, is no longer there, hopefully she'll be able to get her game back. Mame does a miserable job in her challenge, but her photo kicks ass. Mikey continues to speak from his libido,...

When Sarah Shahi revealed to her Person of Interest bosses that she was expecting (twins!), their reaction to losing a key player went from an initial “Oh, s–t” to an opportunistic “Oh, yeah!”
Because, they tell TVLine, the CBS drama had been looking to off a major character this season. “We’re not making that show” where “nothing happens,” showrunner Jonah Nolan explains.
On the heels of Shahi sharing her own story about how her pregnant pause gave birth to a shocking twist, Nolan and co-showrunner Greg Plageman here discuss the team “turmoil” ahead for Shaw’s teammates, that pair of unexpected liplocks,...

By their very nature movie sequels are designed to offer audiences more of the same with the logic being that if something worked once it will of course work again. This laziness is nowhere more apparent than with follow-ups to comedies built around jokes and personalities as opposed to a strong story, and the apathetic greed inherent in that core idea is what leads to unfunny and increasingly painful sequels like Porky’s II: The Next Day, Beverly Hills Cop III, Rush Hour 3 and sweet jesus the stink piles that are The Hangover Parts II and III . When done right though, a sequel to a successful comedy can recapture that magic and deliver just as many (or more) laughs. Evidence for that argument could include films like A Shot in the Dark, 22 Jump Street and — surprisingly — Horrible Bosses 2. Nick (Jason Bateman), Dale (Charlie Day) and Kurt (Jason Sudeikis) have reaped the benefits of their adventure...

Question: Got any new intel on what’s coming up on Glee‘s sixth and final season? —Julius
Ausiello: If the Season 6 scuttlebutt is to be believed, members of the Citizens for the Unification of Brittana can go ahead and start planning that victory parade. One word of caution: Apply for the necessary permits now. I had to cancel my annual Smurf parade last week because the permits didn’t arrive on time. Grouchy Smurf was not pleased.

This week on ABC’s Castle, Kate and Rick dealt with a clear and present danger, when an “invisible man” seemingly killed a random pool hustler. But all was not as it… appeared.
So we’ve moved on — mostly, save for a light-hearted reference here and there — from Rick’s Great Amnesic Mystery, and it feels good. I’m certain they’ll circle back to it at some point(s), just as the Johanna Beckett Mythology popped up now and again. But short of doling out meaningful answers, which they are in no rush to do, it’s best if...
