After resigning her position as librarian at the Briarcroft College for Women after being criticized for letting a senior student read a banned copy of Lovers Must Learn, Prudence Bell (Suzanne Pleshette) decides to move to Italy, the land of love. On the way, she meets geeky Etruscology student Albert Stillwell (Hampton Fancher) (who falls in love with her) and suave Italian Roberto Orlandi (Rossano Brazzi) (who wants her to fall in love with him). But it's when she meets American graduate student Don Porter (Troy Donahue) that she gives away her heart. Unfortunately, Don's ex-girlfriend, sophisticated bombshell Lyda Kent (Angie Dickinson), with whom he shared a turbulent year-long love affair, decides to re-enter his life, and Prudence is afraid that she cannot compete.
Rome Adventure is based on the novel Lovers Must Learn (1932) by American author Irving Fineman (aka Jonathan Joseph). The book was adapted for the movie by American screenwriter Delmer Daves, who also produced and directed the movie.
Al Di La (sung by Emilio Pericoli)
English Translation: I did not believe, I could ever say these words: Beyond the most precious, that's where you are. Beyond the most ambitious, that's where you are. Beyond the most beautiful, Beyond the stars, that's where you are. Beyond everything, that's where you are for me, for me, just for me. Beyond the deepest sea, that's where you are. Beyond the limits of the world, that's where you are. Beyond infinite time, beyond life. That's where you are, beyond everything, that's where you are for me."

After not hearing from Don for the past three days, Prudence decides to let Roberto romanticize her. She packs an overnight bag and goes to his house, but Roberto quickly figures out that she's trying to be like Lyda in order to get over Don. He confesses that Don spent the past three days with him, trying to think things through, but that Don received a urgent telegram from Lyda asking for his help, so he is with Lyda right now. Having given up at finding love in Rome, Prudence decides to return to Connecticut and books passage on a ship, saying goodbye first to all the friends she has made. When Prudence boards the train to the coast, Albert tries to confess his love for her and asks her to marry him, but she evades his question in the chaos of all the people also boarding. Meanwhile, Don shows up at Lyda's hotel room, and she reveals that she summoned him because she needs him to get her out of a marriage to Benjamin Bentley (George N. Neise), a rich but possessive older man that she married yesterday on a whim. Thoroughly disgusted at Lyda for using him, Don storms out of the room, saying only, 'Thanks for wiping my windshield...it was all fogged up.' Weeks later, when the ship finally docks in New York City, Prudence excitedly waves to her waiting parents and begins to disembark. Suddenly, she notices a candelabra and a bouquet of roses weaving through the crowd. 'Don!' she cries out and runs into his arms.
