50 years after its original run, the Norman Lear-produced sitcom "Good Times" is more than just "Dy-no-mite!" It's a spinoff within a spinoff and a classic Black family sitcom that inspired controversy as well as laughter. Like many beloved shows from the '70s, "Good Times" made headlines for behind-the-scenes drama and cast disagreements, but it also captivated audiences.
Originally formulated as a spinoff of "Maude" (which was itself a spinoff of unlikely hit "All in the Family"), "Good Times" retconned its central characters and setting in favor of a new premise. Henry (John Amos) became James, the family got poorer, and the setting switched from New York to Chicago, where it took inspiration from the Cabrini-Green housing projects. Audiences still dug the new show, though by the time it signed off five years later, it had changed entirely: Amos and original star Esther Rolle had left, and the show's most one-dimensional character,...

Sony Pictures Entertainment’s Game Show Network was removed from the lineups of Dish Network’s satellite TV and Sling TV streaming services late Tuesday, after the parties failed to reach a renewal agreement.
“@dish and @Sling cancelled Game Show Network!” the network tweeted late Tuesday. “At Game Show Network we are working hard to make Game Show Network available to you again.” The tweet directed viewers to gameshownetwork.com/dish with information about how to contact Dish and switch providers.
In a statement, Game Show Network said it “tried to get a deal done with Dish, but after eight months of negotiations we could not agree to their demands.”
“Dish is choosing to do this to Game Show Network, an independent network, that costs virtually nothing compared to local retransmission or sports networks,” the Sony Entertainment-owned network said. Gsn alleged that Dish’s removal of channels recently “has...

Pat Carroll, the gregarious Emmy-winning comedienne who was a television mainstay for decades before segueing to a voiceover career that included portraying the villainous sea witch Ursula in The Little Mermaid, has died. She was 95.
Carroll died Saturday of pneumonia at her home in Cape Cod, Massachusetts, her daughter Kerry Karsian told The Hollywood Reporter.
Carroll’s perky personality, screwball wit and impeccable timing made her a great second banana, and Red Buttons, Jimmy Durante, Mickey Rooney, Steve Allen and Charley Weaver were among those who called upon her to make their programs funnier. Her antics on Caesar’s Hour earned her an Emmy in 1957, and she was nominated for her work on the classic variety show the following year.

Harry Colomby, who made the unusual career transition from high school teacher to talent manager at the invitation of jazz great Thelonious Monk, died Dec. 25 from multiple causes at Cedars-Sinai Hospital in Los Angeles. He was 92.
Although Monk was his first client, Colomby’s career expanded to film and television, managing both comedian John Byner and actor Michael Keaton.
He was the producer or executive producer of 13 film or TV projects, several of them Keaton movies, including “Mr. Mom.” The brother of Bobby Colomby, founding member of Blood, Sweat & Tears and, and jazz trumpeter Jules Colomby, Harry also had six screenwriting credits, including the Keaton feature “Johnny Dangerously.”
In an Instagram post, Keaton paid tribute to his business partner. “Unlikeliest of matches, we thought the same, felt the same and laughed at the same things. He was kindhearted, curious, thoughtful and man, was he funny … I loved him and so did all who met him.

The comedian who knows a thing or two about family feuds is now actually going to have the final say. Steve Harvey, who hosts “Celebrity Family Feud” for ABC (as well as the syndicated daytime civilian “Family Feud”), has been tapped to host a new courtroom series for the Alphabet network.
With the working title “Judge Steve Harvey,” ABC has ordered 10 episodes of what it’s billing a “courtroom comedy series.” But the cases will be real: Harvey will welcome real-life people into his courtroom to rule on conflicts ranging from family disputes and sour friendships to actual small claims. “Steve plays by his own rules, basing his courtroom on his own life experiences and some good old common sense,” the network said.

Last weeks episode of Ru Paul’s Drag Race All-Stars: Season 5 saw the elimination of the meme queen herself Mayhem Miller who did appear to be struggling to match the creativity, uniqueness, nerve and talent of the other competitors but it was still a shame to see her leave. This started a discussion between the queens about whether or not a queen should vote for their own elimination. While I understand that voting for yourself does appear to be giving up, at the same time if you know you are the worst-performing queen in the line up then surely it’s within your power to admit that by voting yourself to go home. Also due to Mayhem’s elimination, it means we are now into the top six queens of All-Stars fifth season which means the audience are beginning to see the finale approach, which really helps to amp up...

Alec Baldwin has been one of Donald Trump’s most outspoken critics, and the “30 Rock” actor told Howard Stern in an appearance on the latter’s SiriusXM show Monday that there’s no doubt he’d beat the president if he were to run against him in 2020.
“If I ran, I would win,” Baldwin proclaimed. “I would absolutely win. I 1,000 percent would win.”
The only things preventing the actor from running against Trump, he says, is his commitment to hosting ABC’s “The Match Game,” and his family. Baldwin said that his wife Hilaria would disapprove of his seeking the presidency.

Lisping, camp and effeminate … do gay men really talk in a certain way? One film-maker investigated the phenomenon – and came to terms with his own voice
There’s an old expression in the gay community about a macho-looking man who opens his mouth and “a purse falls out”. This sort of “looks Tarzan, sounds Jane” is particular to the gay male community where a high-pitched, lisping voice has been a huge part of the stereotype of what gay men were like ever since Charles Nelson Riley delivered saucy double entendres on The Match Game (or his UK equivalent Larry Grayson exclaimed “Shut that door!” on The Generation Game).
Usually this “gay voice” isn’t regarded as a positive, either by homophobes making fun of the lisp (usually accompanied by a wrist limper than day-old pasta) or the gay men who notice effeminate tones coming from the mouth of a potential suitor.

When it comes to the Emmys, one thing is certain: "The Amazing Race" will always win Outstanding Reality-Competition Program. Since the category's inception in 2003, the venerable CBS program has taken home the hardware every year save 2010, when Bravo's "Top Chef" pulled off an upset that hasn't been witnessed since.
It's the same five reality shows that continually get nominations from the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences since 2007: "Tar," "American Idol," "Dancing with the Stars," "Project Runway" and "Top Chef." (2012 is a different story because the number went up to six and "American Idol" got bumped by "The Voice") But it's time for a change.
There's another show out there, lurking in the shadows that's been steadily and stealthily outperforming every reality show already listed. That show? "RuPaul's Drag Race."

As we’ve seen in the past, the challenge can be a star-making turn for the gals who get it right: Both Pandora Boxx and Stacey Layne Matthews cleaned up on the past two seasons by serving up delightfully fierce versions of Carol Channing and Precious, respectively.

You fans likely remember, but the episode very memorably saw queens like EW fave Pandora Boxx imitate Carol Channing and Tatianna take on Britney Spears. For Savannah, it’s the unknown, such as her relationship with Dan. Marti is scared of love, although we really have no idea why she is the way she is. This topic provided a great moment between the girls, who once again proved to be the foundation of the show.
Savannah’s mom popped back up again and she was much more tolerable this time around. Although sending Savannah’s ex to do her dirty work was a little wrong, it just showed she wants the best for her daughter.
This episode marked another instance where we got to see some interaction between our characters and their families. Although it is interesting to get some back story, we don’t need to see it every week. This show is about the Hellcats and that’s who it should focus on.

"Hellcats" won't be only about the bidding for a date with members of the cheerleading squad when it returns with a new episode, but it will also present a confession of secret romance. Marti will have to tell the squad about her hook-up with Lewis, and a sneak preview for an upcoming episode have teased on Savannah's reaction.
Alyson Michalka, who plays Marti on the series, has opened up earlier what should be expected from her character's love life. "Marti starts seeing Lewis and they end up breaking it to the squad that they're an item, and I think she expects everybody to freak out and be surprised," she dished to Ksite TV, "but everybody's like 'yeah, cool. Whatever.' "
As for the relationship alone, Aly commented, "I think they're a really good match." She explained further, "Lewis is really supportive of Marti and always there to talk to her...

It's a bidding time for the "Hellcats". Desperate to raise funds to get them to Nationals, the Hellcats plan a date auction. However, things take a unexpected turn after Savannah's old boyfriend Noah shows up and outbids Dan.
Morgan wins a date with a horrified Marti and Vanessa is bid on by a mystery man whom she suspects is Red trying to win her back. Vanessa frets over whether to tell Derrick about the date as the money will cover the trip to Nationals for the Hellcats. Meanwhile, Lewis continues to keep a secret from the team.
The latest storyline could be that of his romance to Marti. Alyson Michalka who plays Marti said previously that the relationship will come to the surface eventually. "I think [Marti] expects everybody to freak out and be surprised, but everyone is like, 'Yeah, cool, whatever'," she revealed.
