The original opening for the show in its first two years on the air was, "From New York City, The Entertainment Capital of the World." Later, in 1964, the show moved production from New York City to Miami Beach, Florida, where the open became, "From Miami Beach, Florida, the Sun and Fun Capital of the World", so the "The Great One" could play golf all year round. These variety shows were video taped at the Miami Beach Auditorium, now known as the Jackie Gleason Theatre of the Performing Arts.
Over time many have wondered where Jackie Gleason got the nickname "The Great One". Well, it was Orson Welles after he and Jackie had gone drink-for-drink one night where Gleason drank Welles under the table. The next day Welles called Gleason and called him "The Great One".
The song Jackie Gleason sang at the beginning and end of his 'Joe The Bartender' scenes on the "Jackie Gleason: American Scene Magazine" version of his show between 1962-1966 was "My Gal Sal".
Jackie Gleason, without fail, ended his weekly show with, "As always, the Miami Beach audience is the greatest audience in the world!"
