After a hiatus as theaters in New York City and beyond closed their doors during the pandemic, we’re delighted to announce the return of NYC Weekend Watch, our weekly round-up of repertory offerings. While many theaters are still focused on a selection of new releases, there’s a handful of worthwhile repertory screenings taking place.

Every horror film festival needs a knowingly daft monster movie to relieve the tension, and Crabs! is this year’s Frightfest selection. It features many of the standard ingredients: unlikely monsters, gratuitous nudity, a small town with a doomed prom night. It also has an earnest young inventor hero and a flirtatious schoolteacher. But Crabs! is not very good in the wrong ways.
Let’s start with those monsters. When one goes to see a film with a title like this, one expects to see some serious claw-wielding, sideways-scuttling action of the sort to be found in 1961’s Mysterious Island or the more recent Love And Monsters. People have serious phobias of such creatures and they’re always fun to watch. Instead we get horseshoes crabs which, um, aren’t crabs (despite the name) and which, at least when small, are rather cute. They’re also endangered (at least in the North Atlantic), which makes.

In films spanning five decades Harryhausen breathed life into his foam latex creations through the process of stop-motion animation. He set them among living actors to create fantastical creatures that enchanted and terrified audiences worldwide. His film credits include classics such as Jason and the Argonauts, with its uncanny sword-fighting skeletons and towering living statue Talos, and Clash of the Titans featuring Medusa, one of the most frightening and iconic monsters to slither across the flickering screen.

By now, a great many people have seen “Godzilla vs. Kong,” and what a lot of them seem to agree on — even many who like it — is that the movie makes almost no sense. That’s nothing new. A number of noteworthy blockbusters have had issues in the how-exactly-does-this-parse? department, like “Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales” or the “Transformers” films or “Avengers: Age of Ultron.” What’s new about the loopy, yes-we-really-have-stopped-making-sense quality of “Godzilla vs. Kong” is the chortling shrug of approval with which it’s been met. Most of what happens in the film is so defiant in its lack of purpose — Kong will go to the Hollow Earth; so that his ride through a cut-rate “Avatar” landscape of primeval wonder will distract you; long enough to keep you from asking what he’s doing there — that the film has been greeted as a...

“Not so much a suspension of disbelief, as a suspension of dreary naturalism.” Criterion acknowledges a great filmmaker with this wonderful trio of Karel Zeman spectaculars, truly original fantasies that showcase a blend of animation and theatrical effects concocted, confected, perfected half a century before CGI. The Czech filmmakers take us on a prehistoric safari, a cruise to an island of Jules Verne sci-fi marvels, and into a brightly imagined, magical storybook fantasy. Even the presentation is whimsical — the three features are packaged in a functioning pop-up book.

“Up, up, and awaaay in my beautiful balloon” sang the Fifth Dimension in the swingin’ 1960s, making this bouncy pop tune their signature song. Drifting high above the clouds then seemed to be the epitome of a lazy, romantic dream date (still does). But a hundred years before, it was quite a different kind of excursion. Many risked their lives dangling from a rickety wicker basket thousands of feet above the ground. That’s the era of the new historical adventure film hitting theatres this weekend. And why were they risking it all? Escape from a hostile regime? Delivering intel to hasten a military victory? No, it’s something we truly take for granted today: predicting the weather. As we leave our homes we switch on the TV forecast or glance at our phone app to know how thick a coat or jacket we should wear or if we should...

MGM’s gigantic silent sci-fi extravaganza took three years to make, by which time the talkies arrived and everything went to pieces. Lionel Barrymore emotes (Emotes!) in his early sound footage, and terrific effects take us to the bottom of the ocean where monsters and a race of Donald Duck creatures menace our heroic adventurers. And don’t forget a few sundry other elements: a Russian revolution, torture scenes, and cool steampunk nautical hardware. All this Life Aquatic lacks is Steve Zissou!

Special effects legend Ray Harryhausen, whose dazzling and innovative visual effects work on fantasy adventure films such as Jason And The Argonauts and The 7th Voyage Of Sinbad passed away in 2013 at age 92. In 1933, the then-13-year-old Ray Harryhausen saw King Kong at a Hollywood theater and was inspired – not only by Kong, who was clearly not just a man in a gorilla suit, but also by the dinosaurs. Brian Trenchard-Smith’s 1982 actioner is an exploitation riff on 1932’s The Most Dangerous Game featuring a cast made in mondo heaven including Steve Railsback, Olivia Hussey and Michael Craig (Harryhausen’s Mysterious Island). Brian’s claims for the film as a satire can be borne out by its British release title, Blood Camp Thatcher, a back-handed salute to the steely Prime Minister.

Fans of special effects icon Ray Harryhausen should rejoice at the remastering of 1961’s Mysterious Island, a sequel of sorts to Jules Verne’s more celebrated 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea, which had been memorably adapted by Richard Fleischer in 1954. Director Cy Endfield takes the reigns on this big budget spectacle which tends to suffer from a bout of sequel-itis as regards the bombastic fervor of gigantic, menacing creatures taking precedence over characterization or narrative energy. Still, the production quality does display the same sense of movie magic specific to a certain period of cinema where Harryhausen’s signature Dynamation would influence generations of future filmmakers.

Omar Sharif
Omar Sharif, star of such legendary films as Doctor Zhivago and Lawrence of Arabia, has died at the age of 83.
The actor, who made a memorable Captain Nemo in Mysterious Island and also appeared in films like Funny Girl, The Tamarind Seed and The 13th Warrior, continued to work until 2013. He was a real all-rounder, as passionate about sport as he was about theatre and film, with a degree in maths and physics, impressive carpentry skills, and a reputation as one of the world's best bridge players. An international heart-throb in his youth, he went on to play fatherly and grandfatherly roles, ageing gracefully and never losing his loyal fans. Though he sometimes publicly lost his temper, once even striking a fan, he is remembered by his fellow actors for his charm and kindness, and for his joie de vivre. "I want to live every moment...

Happy December! Its hard to believe the holiday season is really here, but, with Christmas only a few weeks away now, it seems like time is just ticking away. And if you’re still in need of some gift ideas, thankfully there are a handful of Blu-rays and DVD’s coming out this Tuesday that would make perfect gifts to go under the tree (or tucked in the stockings) this year.

“When television is good, nothing – not the theater, not the magazines or newspapers – nothing is better. But when television is bad, nothing is worse. I invite each of you to sit down in front of your own television set when your station goes on the air and stay there, for a day, without a book, without a magazine, without a newspaper, without a profit and loss sheet or a rating book to distract you. Keep your eyes glued to that set until the station signs off. I can assure you that what you will observe is a vast wasteland. You will see a procession of game shows, formula comedies about totally unbelievable families, blood and thunder, mayhem, violence, sadism, murder, western bad men, western good men, private eyes, gangsters, more violence, and cartoons. And endlessly commercials – many screaming, cajoling, and offending. And most of all, boredom. True, you’ll see...

New Line Cinema and Walden media have attached The Conjuring scribes Carey and Chad Hayes to their Jules Verne-fueled Journey to the Center of the Earth franchise. Josh Hutcherson, who starred in the original film and its first sequel, Journey 2 the Mysterious Island, will re-team with the sequel's headliner Dwayne Johnson for an additional two sequels, both of which may now film back to back.

Once Journey 2: The Mysterious Island performed well at the box office, New Line and Walden naturally began figuring out another sequel to 2008’s Journey To The Center Of The Earth, kicking off development of a script. Their plans have expanded somewhat, with news today that The Conjuring duo Chad and Carey Hayes are set to work on not one but two new films.According to The Hollywood Reporter, Dwayne Johnson remains attached to reprise his role as Navy code breaker and pec-pop enthusiast Hank, likely alongside Josh Hutcherson’s franchise veteran Sean. No plot details have been released, and there's no word on whether Michael Caine or Vanessa Hudgens might also rejoin them, though the end of The Mysterious Island left a few hints about a potential trip into space in tribute to Jules Vernes' moon-exploration tales. The Hayes brothers, who have recently worked on earthquake adventure San Andreas...

To mark the release of Zulu on 5th May, we’ve been given 3 copies to give away on Blu-ray.
22nd January 1964 – On the 85th anniversary of the Battle of Rorke’s Drift during the Anglo-Zulu war in South Africa, the theatrical release of a new historical war drama made an indelible mark on British cinematic history.
Cy Endfield’s (The Mysterious Island, Zulu Dawn) dramatic military re-enactment; Zulu, depicted the ultimate David and Goliath tale of a relatively small garrison of 139 British and colonial soldiers stalwartly defending their mission station against an army of 4,500 Zulu warriors. Eleven of the surviving men were subsequently awarded a Victoria Cross for outstanding bravery on the battle field.
To celebrate the 50th anniversary of this classic screen giant, along with the 135th anniversary of the troop’s victory, the next generation can now enjoy a brand new collectible anniversary edition of this BAFTA® nominated movie juggernaut,...

Dwayne Johnson is Hercules in this first trailer for Brett Ratner’s Hercules. From Paramount Pictures and Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Pictures, the movie hits theaters July 25th.
In a recent post on his official Instagram account, Johnson said, “I trained and worked harder than ever for 8 months for this role. Lived alone and locked myself away (like a moody 260lb monk) in Budapest for 6 months while filming. Goal was to completely transform into this character. Disappear in the role. Press journalist asked me today, with the mental & physical toll the role had on me, would I do it again? Not only would I do it again.. I’d do it f*cking twice. You’ll be the first to see the Exclusive #Hercules trailer one week from today. Look forward to showing you… #TilDeathOrVictory #AndALittle12LaborsBlood”
The Rock is presently reteaming with Journey 2: Mysterious Island director Brad Peyton on the earthquake/disaster film San Andreas.

As new drama Believe arrives in the UK, Rob charts the 5 traits shared by Jj Abrams-produced shows, from Lost, to Alias, Fringe & more…
Jj Abrams is arguably one of the most successful TV producers of recent times. A bold statement, maybe, but a rundown of his series feels like a name check of some of the greatest genre TV of the past couple of decades. Success though, can be a funny attribute to understand – after all, if we knew what it took to be successful, we’d all be doing it.
With Abrams it could be one thing, or many. It could be his love of fantasy, the way he casts or just an understanding of what an audience wants – a good, interesting and exciting story. There is something however, that we might agree on and it’s that his shows have something...

PaleyFest is underway, and while television is not my normal beat here at HitFix, there are exceptions. For example, I've been the one recapping "Marvel's Agents Of S.H.I.E.L.D." this season, and for the last two years it was on the air, I was also the one who was recapping "Lost." In both cases, it makes sense because of other interests of mine. I'm fascinated by the Marvel movie universe, and not just as a fan, but also as an example of world-building in mainstream movies. With "Lost," I was a fan. Period. It was a show that hooked me with the pilot, and I watched every episode of the entire run either as it aired or within a few hours. Sunday night's tenth-anniversary reunion of the cast and creators of "Lost" was, according to tonight's introduction, the single fastest sell-out that the festival has ever had,...

The compelling story of a group of British and American prisoners of war and how they outwitted their Nazi captors observes its 50th anniversary this year, and actor David McCallum, who plays Ashley-Pitt in the film, travelled to Omaha, Nebraska on November 9, 2013, to help celebrate the classic film. Proceeds went to the Nebraska Kidney Foundation, which was why McCallum took time from his busy television schedule to make an appearance. This kaleidoscopic compilation of soundtracks by Bernard Herrmann scored for film, television and radio presents a feature-length overview of this incredibly unique composer's wide-ranging and distinctive style. Working with directors such as Orson Welles, Alfred Hitchcock and Martin Scorsese, during a career that spanned over forty years, Herrmann created scores of such innovative and emotional magnitude that notions of sound and music in cinema have never been the same. The breadth and scope of Herrmann's ingenious composing, arranging and orchestrating talent is on full display here, from the use of the theremin in The Day The Earth Stood Still (1951), to the all-string "black & white" sound for Psycho (1960), and the whistled main title of The Twisted Nerve (1968). Despite a well-charted, stormy history of personal and professional battles, Herrmann could work effortlessly in many musical idioms, seemingly without pause, whether it be within the Romanticism of Jane Eyre (1943) and The Ghost and Mrs. Muir...

Moving Stories | 70 x 70: The Sorcerers + Iain Sinclair, Alan Moore & Chris Petit | Ray Harryhausen | London Indian Film Festival
Moving Stories, Bradford
Should you let the kids slob out with a movie or make them do something vaguely constructive during the summer holiday? This new, free exhibition lets you have it both ways. Using original sketches, models, and even full-scale sets, it shows how children's books are translated to the screen – which means you can see Roald Dahl's illustrated notebook for Fantastic Mr Fox alongside Wes Anderson's models from his movie, for example. There are also activity workshops, and some of the titles are playing in the cinema, too.

The Ray Harryhausen Super-8 Tribute on July 2nd at the Way Out Club will be a great way to honor the stop-motion wizard who breathed cinematic life into the gargantuan, the mythical and the extinct. Harryhausen created countless memorable big-screen moments from sword fighting skeletons to swooping pterodactyls, and from 8pm to Midnight, we will distill his entire career into an amazing show with the Super-8 sound films condensed from his films. The Super-8 sound format cuts features down to an average length of 15 minutes and Harryhausen’s films lent themselves to this format beautifully. Fans of Ray Harryhausen came to pay their respects to the filmmaking titan at last night’s Day 1 of American Cinematheque’s tribute to the stop-motion wizard. At the classic, old-time Aero Theater in Santa Monica, people came far and wide to get a double dose of Sinbad.
Before the screening, I perused the wonderful collection of Ray Harryhausen’s very own art, showcasing many original signed copies, featuring Sinbad, Jason, Ymir, centaurs, and cyclops… all of Harryhausen’s movie monsters and heroes that made it to the big screen with his vivid imagination. The collection came courtesy of the great Art Kandy, an organization that has all the artwork up for sale, ranging from $75 to $2,100. You can check some of the pieces in the gallery below.

When we lost Ray Harryhausen on May 7th, we could at least find comfort in all the indelible and immortal works of imagination that he left behind, and all the disciples that he created through his love of dinosaurs, stop-motion and film. To celebrate and honor his memory, American Cinematheque, the esteemed non-profit film organization, is putting together a tribute of some of his best films. The event will take place from Thursday June 6th to Saturday June 15th, at the Aero Theater at 1328 Montana Avenue in Santa Monica, CA, with a bevy of double feature screenings within that period of time.
Films include The 7th Voyage Of Sinbad, Jason & The Argonauts, Clash Of The Titans, Mysterious Island and so much more. I’ve been to American Cinematheque screenings before, and they’re sure to be glorious prints of Harryhausen’s master craft. Here’s the press release from American...

Besides waiting for a favorite film to pop up on TV, what did movie buffs do before home video? That’s not a rhetorical question because I have the answer: Super-8 millimeter Films! I’m not talking about the kind our dads made of us on vacation in the 60’s and 70’s but the kind that were sold at stores and through mail-order that were condensed versions of popular feature films. Ken Films, Castle Films, and Blackhawk were just some of the distributors of these digest versions of famous movies. I remember the ads that ran in the back of “Famous Monsters of Filmland” magazine advertising mini horror films and I collected them as a kid. The 200 foot editions ran about eight minutes and the 50 footers just three and they were all silent. I have fond memories of my friends and I huddling in my basement watching Revenge Of The Creature...

Ray Harryhausen dies at 92: Jason and the Argonauts, One Million Years B.C. special-effects ‘titan’ Long before the computer-generated imagery of Jurassic Park, Avatar, The Avengers, and Iron Man 3, there were special-effects wizard Ray Harryhausen’s painstakingly created stop-motion models, which graced dozens of movies from the late ’40s to the early ’80s. Earlier today, Ray Harryhausen died at age 92 in London, where he had been living since the early ’60s. Among his movie credits are Jason and the Argonauts, One Million Years BC, and the original Clash of the Titans. Born in Los Angeles on June 29, 1920, Harryhausen became interested in cinema’s visual effects after watching Merian C. Cooper and Ernest B. Schoedsack’s 1933 blockbuster King Kong, featuring stop-motion effects by Willis H. O’Brien. "I came out of the theater awestruck," Harryhausen would reminisce to the Chicago Tribune in 1999. "It was such a totally different, unusual film.

When I think of Ray Harryhausen my mind immediately goes to 1981's Clash of the Titans. I was only four years old when it was released, but the movie lived on for years and still does to this day and I remember watching it over and over again. Today it saddens me to report Harryhausen has passed away at the age of 93. Harryhausen's work lives and breathes in today's films just as much as it did when he was creating stop-motion creature effects from the late '40s up until Titans in 1981 and his work has inspired legions of filmmakers from Peter Jackson and Tim Burton to Steven Spielberg and Sam Raimi. The way he worked was the true definition of animation and a life embodied by the phrase "where there's a will there's a way." The Ray and Diana Harryhausen Foundation has issued a statement on their official Facebook...
