Schaffner leaves NY on a Pennsylvania Railroad train pulled by a GG-1 electric locomotive. A second shot also shows a GG-1. The next couple of shots show the train beyond the electrified territory and being pulled by a covered wagon. But, at just after 12 minutes, there's a GG-1 again.
Although set in the United States, a sign on the wall in the motel diner says No Cheques (British spelling) rather than Checks (American spelling).
Carl looks at the New York Central ticket to determine his destination. However, he is on a Pennsylvania RR train and would have had a PRR ticket, not New York Central.
The train Carl leaves New York on is being pulled by a GG1 locomotive but the sound made is an air horn. The GG1 had a whistle type sound.
